MINDSZENTY PLOT THICKENS Latest Developments CARDINAL GRIFFIN'S PROTEST
LONDON, Jan. 8-(Cable, NC).-"We deplore and condemn the action taken by the Communist Government in Hungary in arresting His Eminence Josef Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary," declared His Eminence Cardinal Griffin, Archbishop of Westminster, in a special Westminster Cathedral Mass for Hungary and the Hungarian Primate. "This new dastardly action by the Hungarian Communists is yet another example of the struggle between Christians in Eastern Europe and the powers of darkness," Cardinal Griffin said.
PROTESTANT SPOKESMAN'S FEARS BOSTON-(NC).--The ultimate "conviction" of Josef Cardinal Mindszenty through "confessions" tortured out of his associates, the ominous expectation of a cleric who knew the Primate of Hungary and was a victim of a similar purge-Dr. Alexander St. Ivanyi, the exiled Unitarian Bishop of Hungary. Significance is given to the statement of Dr. St. Ivanyi because he has been commissioned by the three Protestant churches in Hungary, the Unitarian, Presbyterian, and Lutheran, representing one-third of the population, to be their official spokesman in the United States. These confessions, Dr. St. Ivanyi says, will be the product of tortures more refined for sheer cruelty than those ever conceived by the. Nazis. At his own trial before he escaped, Dr. Ivanyi asserts, confessions from his friends, which bore no resemblance to the truth, were produced.
LUTHERANS' PROTEST PHILADELPHIA, Jan. 6-(NC).---The arrest of His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary, has been deplored here by Lutheran church leaders, who also expressed grave concern for all Christian churches in that Communist -dominated country. In a statement released through the United Lutheran Church news service here, the Rev. Franklin Clark Fry, president of the United Lutheran Church in America, said that "the arrest of men like Cardinal Mindszenty should alarm Christians all over the world. This act is definite proof that the Communist -dominated government of Hungary intends to suppress the Christian church." The Rev. Fry also is an exe cutive of the Lutheran World Fedleration representing approximately 50,000,000 persons.

"Now that Cardinal Mindszenty, once imprisoned by the Nazis, is persecuted by the Communists, and now that facts are streaming to us from Hungary on Communist persecution of Jews, your great fight against Hungarian Communism is seen tube an inter -faith fight," the telegram said. "It is our coismon fight against Red slavery and against that Stalinist scourge which is draw ing ever closer to American shores."
MOSLEM INDIGNATION
CAIRO, Jan. 6-(Radio, N.C)-Profound indignation has been aroused in Egyptian Christian and Moslem circles by the arrest of His Eminence Josef Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary. The Catholic Copt and Greek Patriarchs and the heads of the Oriental and Latin Rites sent messages to the Holy Father expressing sorrow and loyalty. They also sent condemnations of the "abominable crime" to the Ilungarian Government in Budapest and to the Hungarian charge d'affaires here.
FRENCH CARDINALS SEEK RELEASE
PARIS Jan. 7 -Five French Cardinals have sent a letter to Count Michael Karolyi, Hungarian Minister in Paris, asking him to forward to the head of the Hungarian Government the expression of the deep concern aroused in French Catholics by the arrest of His Eminence CarThey expressed the belief that the authorities "will release without delay the dinal Mindszenty. spiritual leader of the Church in Hungary." The letter was signed by Their Eminences Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Paris; Achille Cardinal Lienart, Bishop of Lille; Pierre Cardinal Gerlier, Archbishop of Lyons; Jules Cardinal Saliege, Archbishop of Toulouse; and Emile Cardinal Rogues, Archbishop of Rennes.
CANADA'S ACTION
OTTAWA, Ont.-(NC).-The Canadian Government is consulting with the other signatories of the peace treaty weith Hungary with a view to taking all measures which can permit hope for an improvement in the Hungarian, situation. This is pointed out in a letter sent to Archbishop Alexarsier Vachon, of Ottawa, by Louis St. Laurent, Prime Minister of Canada. OTTAWA, Ont.-(NC).-His Eminence Joseph Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary, has always been a fighter for freedom both under the Nazis and the Communists, and his arrest has little or nothing to do with the charges of treason laid against him. That is the official opinion of Canada as voiced here by a spokesman for the Department of External Affairs. "There is no room for a fighter for freedom under Communist -dominated governments," he added.
YEAR'S CRUSADE TRENTON, N.J.-(NC).-Catholics of the Diocese of Trenton have opened a year's Crusade of Prayer for His Eminence Josef Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary, imprisoned by the Communist-controlled government of his country. WASHINGTON-(N,C).-The United States Congress has be en urged to call upon the United Nations General Assembly for an investigation into the arrest of His Eminence Josef Cardinal Mindszenty, Primate of Hungary, and the imprisonment of Archbishop Aloysius Stepinac of Zagreb, Yugoslavia.
