ThenewsofBishopFoley'sdeath evokedwidespreadexpressionsofregret,forhewaspopularwithpriests andthelaityalike,andmuchrespectedbyhisbrother-BishopsintheCommonwealthandNewZealand,whose closeconfidenceheshared.

Theassumpti,iiiisthatGodisasort ofGreat-Big-Mhe,whoutterscommandsinthesamewayasahuman ruler.Andthatassumptionisso absurdthatitislaughable.Itremindsmeofanatheistofmyacquaintancewhothoughthehadquashedthewholecasefortheexistenceof Godbyremarking:"Youtalkabout God.Why,furallyouknow,God mightbeblack!"
Thereallyastonishingthingwasthat hemeantit.
Godistheinfinite,self-existentspir- itualBeing.Ileisnotmadeofparts. Iledoesnotpossessabody,muchless lungsandvocalorgans-andaplentifulsupplyofair.
TIccreatedtheuniversebyanactof HisWill,byanexerciseofHisinfinite power--notbyshoutingcommandslike asergeant-major.
Godcreatedatleastthefundamental realityofthematerialuniversedirectly.Hecreatedthevariousbodiesof theuniverseindirectly,byimpressing inmatterinclinationsandlawswhich. bytheiroperationanddevelopment, gaverisetotheuniverseasweknow itto-day. Some1,400yearsB.C.,Godinspired theProphetMosestowritedownwhat lie(God)wishedtomakeknownregardingthefirstoriginoftheuniverse ingeneralandofmaninparticular. Tothisend,HemadeuseoftheIan:zuage-namelyHebrew-andthementalequipmentofMoses,whowasHis instrument.ThusGodmadeknown, inaformandlanguagewhichwould beunderstoodbythepeople,the truthswhichconstitutethefoundationsofourexistence.
ThedirectorindirectactofGod whichresultedintheproductionof light,isdescribedbythesacredwriter inthewords:"Belightmade."From theverynatureofthecase,thesewords aretobeunderstoodinananalogous ormetaphoricalsensetoexpressan actoftheInfiniteBeing.
Yet,withoutstoppingtostudythe realmeaningandimplicationofthe text,youputuponitaliteralinterpretationwhichtheAuthornever meantittohave.Youconceiveof GodasasortofGreat-Big-Man,Then youaskinyoursimplicity,whatlanguageIlespoke. Youimagine,stillinyoursimplicity, thatwecannotreasonablyacceptGod's accountofcreationunlesstherewere witnessespresenttoverifyit.It shouldbeobviousthatifGodexistsat allHemustbeinfiniteTruth,andcan neitherdeceivenorbehimselfmistaken.Itshouldbeobviousthatin givingarevelationtoonewhoisto speakinHisname,Ilecanmake knownHisidentitybeyondthepossibilityoferror.
Inshort,whatyouaretiltingatis notthemeaningintendedbytheAuthorofGenesis,butacaricatureof yourownconstruction.

Youassumethattheauthorofthe text,inordertogiveatruthfulaccountofwhatoccurred,wasboundto giveascientificexpositionofthefacts herecords;asifhewerewritinga text-bookofelementaryscienceforIntermediatestudents.
Again,youareguiltyoffalseassumptioninthinkingthattheauthor ofGenesiswasboundtodescribe eventsinchronologicalorder.You assumethatthesixdaysrepresentsix successiveeventsintheorderandthe timeinwhichtheyoccurred,In short,youassumeanumberofthings youhavenorightorreasontoassume,andthen,withequalunreason, youaccusetheauthorof"mucking up"hisdescription.
Thereareseveralelementaryprinciplesofscripturalinterpretationwhich youhavecompletelyoverlooked;possiblybecauseyouhaveneverheardof them.Heretheyare:-
(1)ManypassagesinSacredScriptureareproposedinmoreorlessfigurativelanguage,andshouldbeunderstoodinthislight.Totakeametaphoricalexpressionliterallyistodistortitsmeaning.
(2)Manyassertionsandphrasesare tobeunderstoodasdescribingtheexternalappearanceofthingsasthey appeartothesenses,andnotasprovidingascientificexplanationofphenomena.
(31Attimesthesacredwritersfollowpopulartraditionsandaccommodatethemselvestotheassociationsand ideasincurrentusage.Inotherwords, thetruthswhichthewriterswishedto expressareclothedinpopularlanguageandtraditions;andinphrases whichwouldbeunderstoodbythepeo. plcforwhomtheywrote.

Thisinfiltrationofpost-Christian paganismhasbeensteadybutslow, andateachstageimperceptible.The Christianofto-daythinksthatheis livinginwhatistoallintentsandpurposesaChristiancivilisation.Withoutmisgivingshefollowsthecurrent ofthesociallifearoundhim.His games,hisbooks,hispapers,hissocial andpoliticalideasareofmuchthe samekindasthoseofthepeoplewith whomhei1ingles,andwhomaynot haveavestigeofaChristianprinciple leftintheirminds,Hediffersmerelyfromtheminthatheholdstocertaindefinitereligioustruthsandclings tocertaindefinitereligiouspractices. Butapartfromthisthereisnotany strikingcontrastintheoutward conductoflifebetweenChristian andnon-Christianinwhatiscalledthe civilisedworld.Catholicsareamused by,andinterestedin,theverysame thingsthatappealtothosewhohave abandonedallbeliefinGod.There sultisagrowingdivorcebetweenreligionandlifeinthesouloftheindividualChristian.Littlebylittlehis faithceasestoexerciseadetermining effectonthebulkoftheideas,judge- mentsanddecisionsthathaverelation towhatheregardsashispurely"secular'life.Hisphysiognomyasasocial beingnolongerbearstraceoftheformativeeffectofthebeliefsheprofesses.Andhisfaithrapidlybecomes athingoftraditionandroutineand notsomethingwhichislookedtoasa sourceofalifethatisreal.-4Edward Leen,C.S.Sp.
AnyofourreaderswhorecentlyattendedthelecturegivenbyRev. FatherLalor,on"TheHolyShroudof Turin,-willrememberthereplicaofthe nailusedattheCrucifixionofChrist. Anillustratedslidegaveavividimpressionofit.Itisinteresting,therefore,toreadthedescriptionofthese nailsasseenbySt.Franciswhenhe receivedthestigmatafromChrist.He gavehisbrethrenafullanddetailed accountofhisvision,andSt.Bonaventure,whoknewthecompanionsof Francis,haswrittentheaccountwhich appearsinFatherCherance'sbook:"AttheentranceofTuscany,ashort distancefromthebordersofUmbria, risesamountainwhosesombresummit loomsinthedistanceabovethelong chainoftheAppines,andwhosebase isbathedbyfiverivers,theTiber,and Arnoon Fogliathewestern,andtheMetauro, andMarecchiaontheeastern slope.ItisAlverno,blessedmountain inwhich,ifitwerepermissibletoassociateitwithmemoriesoftheGospel, wewouldwillinglycalltheThahorand CalvaryofSt,Francis.Itwasthere heenjoyedallthedelightsofheavenlycontemplation,andpouredouthis bloodinstreams.Hisjourneysand sojournonAlvernohavetracedtoo luminousatrackinhistorynottorivet ourgazeandattractourwholeattention.

Suddenlyhesawaseraphwithsixflamingwingsofdazzlingbrightnessdescendingfromthehighheavens.The angelflewwitharapidflightquite closetohim,andremainedpoisedin theair;andthenappearedbetweenitswingstheimage thecrucitic, Jesus.Atthissight,thesoulofFranciswasfilledwithamazement.Joyandsorrowpossessedhimbyturns; joy,becausehehadbeforehimthe Godofhisheart,theGodofloveinthe formofaseraph;sorrow,becauseit wasJesussuffering,withHishandsand feetnailedtotheCross,andHis Heartpiercedwithalance.Hehad beforehisevesanunfathomablemys- tery,andhisastonishmentwasextreme;forhowreconcilethehumiliationsofCalvarywiththegloriesofthe beatificvision?Atlastheunderstood byaninfusedlightthehiddensenseof thisvision,andthatitwasnotbodily martyrdom,butratherthefirstoflove thatwastocompletelytransformhim intohisBeloved.

Thompson,ofNewark,formerlyof BruceRockandPerth.Hisparents werewellknowninthisState,whenhis father,whoservedwiththeA.I.F.in thelastwar,wasfarmingatBruce Rock.LatertheycametoPerth, whereAnthonyattendedtheKindergartenatVictoriaSquaretillheleftfor Englandattheageofsix.HeattendedSt.Mary'sSchool,Chesterfield,for fiveyearsbeforegoingtoNewarkin 1936.Hisschoolcareer,whichwasfull ofpromise,wasbroughttoatragic closewhenhebecamethefirstvictim ofNaziair-raidsonNewarkduring Februarylast.Whentheraiderscame overthetownforthefirsttime,Anthonywasoutshootingsparrowson Trentsidewithtwootherboysfrom hisschool.Hisfriendsescaped,but Tonywaskilledoutright.Hewasonly 16yearsofage,andatthetimeofhis deathwashardatworkpreparingfor theR.A.F.Apprentices'Examination,whichwasheldinMaylast.Hewas aboyofjusttherighttypefortheAir Force,keen,loyal,andofthatexcellentfearlessnesswhichcomesnotfrom lackofappreciationofdanger,but fromaspiritofpluckanddetermination.Hehadplayedforthefirst RugbyfootballXVforthreeseasons, andwasawardedhiscoloursin1939. Itwouldsuperficiallyseemcommendabletoseekthemiddleway insuchacrisis,wereitnotunhappilytruethatthe"viamedia"has beenseizeduponbytheeconomicallycomfortable,andbythecaptainsandapostlesofcapitalismtomeanthepreservationofthe presentorder.Itistherefugeoftheweak,thecowardly,andthe lazy.ItismostespeciallyexecrableinCatholiclifepreciselybecausethePopehasdeclaredthataremedymustbefoundand foundquickly.ThePapalwordsimply,therefore,thatthereisa disease,andthatitischronic,butthatthereisalsoaremedyboth drasticandurgent.Hencethereisreallyonlyoneunforgivable socialsin,andthateitherthedesireorthedoctrinetoleavethings astheyare

Butitisinterestingandimportanttonotethatatthis historicalmomentwhenabusesarecertainlyclamouringforsomethingradical,theold,oldshamsarebeingmaintainedalmostcompletelybyavocabulary.
Inallsobriety,nomanofgoodwillcould,to-day,remaina conservativeifhehadhadaclassicalinsteadofatechnicaleducation,andsowascompetenttounderstandthemeaningofwords. Inafewgenerationspeoplewillrefusetobelievethatanycivilisation.couldhaveplumbedthedepthsofsophistrysothoroughlythat theordinaryvernacularcompletelysmotheredtheintellectualconceptwhichitwasmeantfaintlytomirror.Andhereagainwe havetheconservativeandtheCommunistpropagandistlockedin aneternalembrace,vowedequallytoshunstraightthinkingand plaintalk.Thereisaremoteandineffectualworld,exemplified bytheplacidpress,wheremenaredamnedbyplatitudesand euphemisms.Theextentofoursociety'srottennessandcorruptioncanbemeasuredbythefactthatthiscategoryevenincludes theyellow-press.Cananygoodreasonbeallegedwhyrapeand sodomyshouldbecalled"seriousoffences,"orpregnancy,"acertaincondition"?Istheresomethingintrinsicallyrepulsiveabout thenotionofaviviparousmother?Theveryjournalswhichrecoilfromprintingtheword"venereal"arethesamewhich 'corruptouryouthandundermineournationwiththeir"medical" columns.
Buttheseareonlyminorinstancesoftheostrichtacticexemplifiedbytheeuphemism.AndtheEuphemismitselfisthe merestbagatelleincontrastwiththeintellectualperfidyitrepresents.Thewholeatmospherecouldbepurifiedandmadeexpectantofsocialjusticeifonlypubliclifecouldrecapturethelanguage .ofthemaninthestreet.NobodygetspunchedinParliamentbecausethereareonlytobefoundthere"prevaricatorsofthetruth." 'Twosailorshaveabrawl,andoneisfinedbecauseonewasaliar. Writingin1928,Bellocdeploredthe blindnesswithwhichmodernEuropeansocietydefendsitself.Hewas irritatedbytherottenargumentsit wasusingagainstCommunism:the contemptiblemotivesofgreedinthe fewrichmencontrollingCapitalistsocietyanditspress.Heshowedhow limply-howlifelessly-fonestablished socialconditionsreactedagainstavital thingliketheflamingenthusiasmwith whichtheatheisticCommunismofthe daywaspropagated.Theinitiative wasdefinitelywiththeenemy,Belloc lookedinvainforsomeonewhowould snatchbacktheinitiative:whowould showourChristianWesternculturea waytoregainitsownself-respect.
ButevenasBellocwrote,Dr.OliveiraSalazarwasappointedMinister forFinanceinPortugal.Infouryears hebecametheheadoftheState.Since 1928Salazarhaspursuedapolicythat hasturnedPortugal'sfaceawayfrom itsso-calleddemocraticliberalism.In Portugal,asineveryothercountry wherethatphilosophyheldsway,its legacywas-evenasLacordairehad preachedonehundredyearsago,that itwouldbe-manwithouttheownershipofthesoilorofhislabour becomeaslavewithintheverydefinitionofslavery nothingleftsave universalservitude,hungerandthirst regimentedundertherodofahandful ofindividuals;thecitizens hardly abletoexercisethefreeman'sright(of feudaldefinition)totakehisproperty -histwoarms-andgo,withoutincur;Mgthecrimeofhightreason.
Inbreakingthefetters,social,politicalandeconomic,bindingPortugal tothisrottenyesterday,Salazarhas donesomethingremarkable.Moreimportantstill,hehasgonebacktomedievalCatholicculturefortheforms tobuildhisrevolution-andinhis handsitworks.
Salazarseepstobeananswerto Belloc'scryforinitiativeandcourage intheCatholiconslaughtuponthe modernistheresy.Andifareplyto Belloc,thenrefutationtoSpenglerand thosewhodespairtheupsurgeofthe Westtoitsformerglory.

Inthelastfourmonths-itseems likefouryearswhenIlookback-I certainlyhavedonesometravelling,by boat,truck,andIamsorrytosay, byfoot.Isupposeyouhavereadall abouttheevacuationsfromGreeceand Creteandallthedetailsofthehappeningsthere.Youknow,Greeceis suchawonderfulplace;it'sapitywe didn'thavemoretimetohaveagood lookaround.Idon'tthinkIhadever heardofGreeceasatouristcountry, butit'scertainlythebestplaceIhave seeninmytravels.Ihadtwodays' experienceofsnowontopofagreat mountain.Itsnowedhardforthe wholetwodays,andmusthavebeen acoupleoffeetthick.Anexperience certainly,butgivemetheoldsunshine everytime.Thevillages,however, tookmyfancy.Situatedinakindof clusteronthesideofthemountains, theylookasthoughthehousesare builtandthenstuckontheside,and whenthesunshinesonthemthenaturalcoloursmakethemlooklikeanoil painting.Thenthegreenvalleysbetweenthemountainsandtheclear streamsrunningdownfromthesnow mountains.Noshortageofwater here,and,ofcourse,betterstill,no waterrates.
But,ofcourse,allthesethingswere beforethe"Blitz"started,and,of course,theGermanshadanoverwhelmingsuperiorityintheairand madethingstoohotforus.What theydidtoLarrissa,oneofthemain townsinGreece,wasasin.They don'tseemtobecontenteduntilthere isnotahouseorshopstanding.
ByJove,afunnyincidenthappened there,notfunnyatthetime,butitis nowwhenIlookback.Wewerepass. ingthroughthetownjustafterthe finalbombingandweweren'tlosing anytimeasJerrywasnotfarbehind. Justpassingtheairraidshelters,we sawmoreplanescoming,sodecidedto hopoutofthetruck,anartatwhich afterwardswegotveryproficient,and waituntiltheall-clearwasgiven. Ordotheadvocatesofa"well-bore" peopleperhapswantaraceofdoctors ofphilosophy?Ifallpeopleborn wereinthatcategory,wouldmanbe happier?Whowoulddothemore menialtasks,anddothemhappilyand contentedly?Wouldmanbeindividuallyandsociallybetter?Would hemorecertainlyattainhisfinaldestiny?
Again,itiswelltoobservethatthe eugenistsassumeafargreaterknowledgeofhereditythanwereallyhave. Theirbroadbasicassumptionisthat defectiveparentswillbegetdefective childrenandnormalparentswillbeget normalchildren.Butallinall,that ismerelyan"assumption,"Theuncertaintyregardingthecausesofdefectsinhumanbeingsisverygreat. Wehaveonlyamostlimitedknowledgeofthemanneroftheirtransmission.Muchmentionismade,forexample,ofmentaldefectives.Yet, oftenitisnotknownwhetheracertainmentaldefectiveissuchthrough heredityorthroughsomeothercause. So,too,isitquiteimpossibletoascertainwhoarelatentcarriersoffeeble. mindednessorothermentaldefectsand whoarenot.Anindividualmaybe quitenormalhimself,andyetbeget mentallyabnormaloffspring.

AcommitteeappointedbytheAmericanNeurologicalAssociationforthe InvestigationofEugenicSterilisation expressesmuchthissameviewregardingourknowledge,orlackofknowledge,ofhumanheredity.Therabid eugenistmaywellstudyseriouslyits report,whichreadsasfollows:
"1.Ourknowledgeofhumangeneticshasnottheprecisionnoramplitudewhichwouldwarrantthesterilisationofpeoplewhothemselvesare normalinordertopreventtheap'earanceofmentaldeficiencyintheir descendants.
"2.Particularlydowewishtoemphasisethatthereisatpresentno soundscientificlawforsterilisationon accountofimmoralityorcharacterdefect,

TheChurchhasalsospokenonthis questionofafaultyeugenics.Inhis EncyclicalonChristianMarriagePope PiusXI.particularlycondemnedthe arrogationofpoweronthepartofthe State,eithertopreventfrommarrying ortodepriveofthegenerativefaculty throughmedicalactionorsterilisation, suchasarecapableoffulfillingthe endsofmarriage.
TheviewoftheChurchisstatedat somelengthintheMarriageEncyclical,butitshouldbequitesufficient heretopointtothegreatfundamental principlesthatunderliethatview. Theyarethefollowing:
1.Manhasanaturalrighttoenter matrimony.
2.Theprocreativefacultymustnot bedestroyedforanythingexcept crime,
3.Thefamilyismuresacredthanthe State.
4.Itisnotacrimetoentermarriage evenifdefectivechildrenonlywillbe bornoftheunion.
5.Publicauthorityhasnodirect powerevenoverthebodyofitssubjects. Wellmighttheeugeniststudythose principles.Hewouldthenlikelyprove himselflessadetrimenttootherindividualsandtosociety.
Far-reachinggoodwillresultfrom theofficialrecognitionoftheChurch inJapan,istheopinionofFatherPatrickJ.Byrne,Maryknollmissionhead inKyoto,Japan.
"Therearetwopracticalimplications tothisrecognition,"statesFather Byrne."Firstofallweourselvesand allofficersoftheChurchacquirenot onlyguaranteedlibertyforreligious activities,butevenrecognisedlegal standingaswell.
