NotContrary.
Inconsequenceofthegeneralunderstandingthatthisparagraphreferred toHenryGeorge'ssystem,FatherMcGlynn,ofSt.Stephen'sChurch,New York,whowasasupporterofHenry George,gotintotroublewithhisecclesiasticalsuperiorsandwaseventually excommunicated.However,itwas notreallyverydifficultforthesupportersofHenryGeorgetoshowthat eitherLeoXIII.inhiscondemnation wasnotreferringtotheGeorgesystemor,ifbyanychancehewas,then hehadbeenmisinformedaboutit,and whenFatherMcGlynn'scasewasreopenedontheinstructionsofthePapal Delegate,thedecisionwasgiventhat histeachingwas"notcontrarytothe doctrineconstantlytaughtbythe Church,andrecentlyconfirmedbythe HolyFatherintheEncyclical,"Rerum Novarum'" Thereisthereforenoreasonwhya Catholicshouldnotbeafollowerof George,oragreewithhispracticalproposals.

HenryGeorgewasstruck,asall thoughtfulmenmusthavebeen,bya paradoxofindustrialism.
Theparadoxwasthis.Asprocesses improved,therealcostofproducing mostofthearticlesofeverydaylifethatis,theamountoflabour,bothultimateandimmediate,requiredtoproducethem-wasvastlydecreased.Yet theirmarketcostwasreducedbutlittle,ifatall,andtherewasnorisein thestandardoflivingofthepoorat allcomparabletotheincreaseofsociety'sproductivepower.Whywas this?
Theexplanationwasthatindustrialism,basedoncoal,requiredtheconcentrationoffactories.Ergo,parallel tosociety'sincreasedproductivepower wentanincreasedconcentrationof production.Thismeant,underthe systemthatwehave,thattheowners oflandinthefortunateplacesfound theirproperty,throughnolabourof theirown,increasinginvalue.Those ofthemwhowereexceptionallyfortunatecouldchargemoreorlesswhatthey likedfortheirgroundrents,andcould thuskeepthepriceoftheproductsof industryuptotheiroldlevel,merely puttingintotheirownpocketsanydifferencethattheremightbebetween oldpriceandnewcostofproduction.
