Third Chant Festival Shows Remarkable Progress 4,000 CHILDREN ACHIEVE-Chant I than HIGH STANDARD years-lest Adjudicator Congratulates Archdiocese

The Third Annual Plain Chant Festival, which took place last week, gave striking proof of the remarkable progress that has been made in such a short period. Four thousand children took part in the competitions, and the standard was uniformly high, as the Adjudicator's report on this page testifies. No higher tribute could be paid to the Diocesan Director of Sacred Music (Rev. Albert Lynch) than the proficiency and enthusiasm evinced by these thousands of school children.

has now been going on in the schools for three years, felt more at liberty to use a more absolute standard of judging could be used during the first two I should discourage anyone. Despite a more severe marking, I found myself giving figures similar to those of the previous years. This speaks volumes and I would like to congratulate the Diocesan Director of Sacred Music (Rev. Father Lynch) and the teachers on the splendid work that has been done. The movement for liturgical music is

certainly on a solid basis now. May there be many more of these inspiring Plain Chant Festivals. What I have seen makes me hope that the idea which has already been followed in other parts of Australia will spread. The work of adjudication, though difficult because of the close degree of excellence among the schools, has been an interesting and pleasant one, and I congratulate the Archdiocese of Perth on the singing it now possesses for its churches and wish it all success. S.

MORENO, O.S,B.

Each year it is now assured that there will be recruited into the parish choirs, hundreds well -trained in the sight-reading of liturgical music and in singing the chant, besides accomplished organists and others proficient in the art of conducting. The beautiful music heard by those present at the Masses of the festival week will be the regular experience of all in every part of the Archdiocese. A full report of the Festival, with results in detail, appears on page 8.
