PERTH, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER M, 1941.

LAST Thursday morning, the three side altars in the Cathedral were

consecrated and dedicated, respectively, to the Sacred Heart, to Our Lady, and to Saint Teresa of the Child Jesus. These altars, which as everyont chows, have been in the Cathedral since its erection, had never been consecrated, so that when Mass was celebrated on any of them it was necessary to treat them as mere tables, requiring a portable altar stone to be laid upon them. Now that they have been consecrated the whole marble top of the altar constitutes one large immovable altar stone. The consecration of one altar is a sufficiently long ceremony. The consecration of three together probably was considered by those present as extremely long, and the duration of the function was further protracted by the consecration of over forty portable altar stones for the use of churches with wooden altars. The ceremony is, however, a most interesting one. The altars are symbolically washed, then dedicated, then consecrated. They are washed with holy water, in which a little wine, salt and ashes are mixed. Then they are dedicated to the patron chosen for the altar (in this case the Sacred Heart, Our Lady, and St. Teresa, respectively), and the relics of martyrs are enclosed in the stone itself. HELIOS. These relics consisted of well authenticated fragments of the bones of martyrs taken from the catacombs and sent from Rome for the purpose; they were sealed by the Archbishop in brass

The boxes were then placed in cavities cut out of the surface of tl.; altar and sealed over with a small marble slab set in cement. In the case of the Cathedral altars the martyrs, whose relics were enclosed were the following :-In the Lady Altar SS. Fulgens, Urban and Adeodatus. In the Sacred Heart Altar: SS. Jucundus, Redemptus and Innocentia. In the Altar of St. Teresa: SS. Christiana, Proba and Modestina. Then followed the third part of the ceremony, that of the actual consecration. As in all other kinds of consecrations, Holy Oils, Incense and Wax are used. The table of the Altars were first anointed in five places with the Oil of Catechumens; this was then repeated with Chrism, then the whole top surfaces of the altars were anointed with both oils together. Finally, the joints of the supports of the altars and the tables were signed with oil.

altars; into the four corners and the centre of each of these crosses were placed five grains of incense, a small wax taper made in the form of a cross was then pressed onto these grains and

altar cloths, candle sticks and other ornaments were placed on them, and a special Mass for the dedication of Altars

was then celebrated on all three together. Thcse who were not present would be well advised to make a point of being present the next time an altar is conseri atecL They would find that the beauty and variety of the function wculd more than compensate for the time spent at its assistance.
