ThePowerofPrayer

"Puzzled,"Lakemba,NS.W. Ishouldlikeyoutogivemeaclear ideaoftheteachingoftheChurchin relationtothepowerofprayer,a matterwhich,Imustconfess,hasme alittlepuzzled. TheChurch'steaching,concerning thepowerofprayeristhatofChrist Himself,asrecordedintheNewTestament.

ItisDivineRevelationthatprayer madewiththeproperdispositionsof faith,condence,humilityandpersever. anceforanobjectwhichisreallyfor one'seternalgoodisalwaysanswered; andansweredinthewaywhich,inthe designsofGod,isbestsuitedforour eternalsalvation.

Whentheforegoingconditionsare fulfilled,wehaveGod'swordforitthat theprayerwillbeanswered.

Ihavealwaysbeentaughttobelieve thatthepowerofprayerisvery great.

SincethatistheteachingofChrist Himself,broughttoyoubytheinfallibleteachingChurchwhichHefounded.itisDivinetruth,thedenialof whichwouldbeadenialofChristHimself.

Shedoes.Shealsoteaches,as ChristHimselftaught,thattheprayer mustberealprayer,madewiththe properdispositions,forsomething whichisreallyforourgood.

THEFORE-KNOWLEDGEOFGOD.

Ontheotherhand,Iwastoldthat GodisAlmightyandknowseverythingthatwillhappen.Tobecome colloquial,Hehasitallworkedout.

Godisnotonlyomnipotent;Heis omniscient.Heisnotonlyall-powerfuloralmighty,butall-knowing.He knowseverythingwhichisknowable ineveryrespectinwhichitisknowable.Heknowsnotonlyeverything that"willhappen";Heknowseverythingwhichcouldhappen.

Webelievethis, notsimplybecause weweretolditatschoolorelsewhere, butbecausewhatweweretoldisa truthdemonstrablebyphilosophical argument, andknownwithcertainty fromDivineRevelation.

ThewordsthatGodhaseverything "allworkedout"areambiguousand misleading.Theymaymeanthat God,frometernity,hassoordained andpre-determinedeveryactionand everyevent,independentlyofanywish orchoiceofours.thatwesimplyhave nofreedomorchoiceinthematter.

SuchwastheviewofCalvin,which haslongsincebeenrejectedbythe Churchasheretical.

Ontheotherhand,theymaymean thatGodknowsfrometernityeverythingthatwilltakeplace,including thefreeactsofmen.Thefreeactsof menareeternallyknownbyGod,becausetheywillasamatteroffact,actuallytakeplace.Theydonottake placebecauseGodknowsthatfree agentsatanygiventimeandplace willactuallyperformthoseacts.

HARDTORECONCILE?

Thesetwostatements,ifbothbecorrect,wouldappeartobealittle hardtoreconcile.

BothdoctrinesarerevealedbyGod. SinceGodistruthandtruthisOne, therecannotbeanyrealcontradiction betweenthetwo.

Inyourcasethedifficultyisdueto misunderstanding.

Inthefirstplace,youdonotseem tohavepaidsufficientattentionto theconditionswhichmustbefulfilled beforeprayerbecomesefficaciousaccordingtotheproci00ofChristOur Lord.Moreover,youseemtohave overlookedthefactthat,evenwhen one'sdispositionsareallthatthey shouldbe,thegrantingofanyparticularrequestdependsuponwhether itwouldbeconducivetoone'seternal salvation.

Secondly,youaremistakeninassumingthatbecauseGodknowsthe freeactsofmenfrometernity,those actscannolongerbefree.Thatis simplyputtingthecartbeforethe horse.Godknowsafreeactbecause itwillbeactually'-edbyafree agent.Theactisnotplacedbefore Godknowsthatitwillbeplaced.

Thirdly,youhaveoverlookedthe factthatGoddoesnotwilleverything absolutelyandunconditionally.He willsmanythingsconditionally.He knowsfrometernitywhetherornot menwillfulfiltheconditions.

Thequestionremains:"Howcan Godknowthefuturefreeactsof men?"

Thatconstitutesarealdifficulty. ThatGoddoesknowsuchacts, with absolutecertaintyandfrometernity, isafactwhichisknownbothfrom reasonandfromRevelation. How Heknowsthemwedonotknow. But, inthiscase, thedifficultyarisesfrom thelimitationsofourreasonwhichis incapableoffullyunderstandingthe eternityandtheinfinityofDivine knowledge.

Thereismuchintheuniverseabout usthatwedonotunderstandand much,possibly,thatweneverwillunderstand.ItthereforestandstoreasonthatintheinfiniteBeingthere willbemuchthatwecannotunderstand.preciselybecauseofthelimitationsofourreason.

Apartfromtheseconsiderations,the provisionmadebytheStateforreligiousinstructionisatpresenthopelesslyinadequate.Butinnocase, howeverelaborated,coulditbeacceptabletotheCatholicconcept.Forone thing,theveryfactthatreligionwould besegregatedfromtherestofthecurriculumbringsitinconflictwiththe Catholicclaimthatreligionshouldbe theintegratingforceofeducationasof lifegenerally.Education,aswesee it,shouldaimatthetotalformationof thechild,andthusitisdependenton allphasesofitsschoollife.

AlloftheseChurchesoftheEast wereonceCatholic.Atvariousdates theybecameseparatedfromthecentre ofunityatRome,eitherbyschismor heresy;neverthelesstheyallprofess theCatholicfaithinagreaterorless degreealmostinitsentirety.They havemaintainedthepreceptsofChristianmoralitymoreorlessasheldby Catholics.TheyworshipGodwith liturgiesandriteswhichtheChurch recognisesasofequalauthenticityand dignitywiththoseofRome.With oneortwolocalanddoubtfulexceptionstheirordersandsacramentsare valid.
