TheVaticanRadio,HVJ-HolySeeVatican-Jesus-wasopenedonFebruary12,1931,accordingtotheplans andunderthesupervisionofthelate MarcheseMarconi,whosoughtto makethestationthemodelofitskind andthemostpowerfulinEurope.At theopening,HisHolinessthelatePope PiusXIbroadcastanaddresstothe world,whichwasreceivedinAustralia andrebroadcastfromAustralianstations.AfanfareoftrumpetsannouncedthatPopePiusXIhadpresseda buttonandstartedthemotorsgeneratingthepower.SignorMarconispoke afewwordsinItalianandintroduced HisHoliness.

Onawallfacingthestationamarbleslabrecordedthatthestationwas erectedbyMarcheseMarconi,thatby itsmeansthevoiceofthePopewould beheard"totheendsoftheearth, acrossthewavesofether,totheglory ofGodandfortheassistanceofthe soulsofmen."

Becauseofitslocation,theVatican Cityradiostationisconstructedwith peculiaritiesthatmakeitdifferent fromallotherstationsinthe'world.It isonthesummitoftheVaticanHills. Theantennawaserectedononeside ofthewallsbywhichPopeLeoIV,in theninthcentury,enclosedSt.Peter's Basilica,whilethestationitself-a small,attractivestructureofbrickand travertinemarble-wasbuiltonthe otherside.

YourmethodofScripturalinterpretationisanythingbutscientific;anythingbutreasonable.Youignorethe overwhelmingScripturalevidencefor Christ'sclaimtobeGod;youignore themiracleswhichwereadducedin supportofthatclaim.Yousimply takeoddtexts,isolatethemfrom theirimmediatecontextandtheteachingoftheNewTestamentasawhole: putanarbitraryinterpretationupon them;andthenthinkyouhavediscoveredanargumentagainsttheDivinityofChrist. * * *

OnSunday,June1,1hadoccasonto commentontheletterofaSydney businessmanwho,onhisowninitiativeandinthefaceofviciousoppositon,hadendeavouredtogivehisemployeesafairdeal. Thefirmwithwhichhewasfirstassociatedwassavedfromruinbythe hardworkandreadyco-operationof theworkers.

Inreturnfortheirservices,hepromisedtheworkersashareoftheprofits.Butwhen,thankstotheefforts oftheemployees,thefirmwassaved andprofitswereforthcoming,thecompanyrefusedtohonourthepromises madetothemen.

ALLtheprofitswereappropriated bytheshareholders,andthebusiness manhimselfwasforcedtoresignirom theBoardofDirectors.Hethusgave fromhisownbusinessexperiencean exampleoftwoveryimportantthings: (1)ofthereadinessofthegeneralityof theworkerstorespondgenerouslyto fairtreatment;(2)ofthecrimeofsocialinjusticewhichisrampantherein Australia.

Twoyearslater,hestartedanew firmunderhisownname.Thoughhis newfirmwassteadilylosingmoney,he decidedtoactontheprincipleofjusticethat,sincetheworkerscontribute totheprofitsofindustry,theyhavea rightinjusticetoaproportionate shareofthoseprofits.Inpursuance ofthisaim,heraisedthestandardof wages,sothattheminimumwagepaid inhisfactorywas£6perweek.

Withinthreemonths,thefirmhad convertedlossesintoprofits,and,in consequence,theyhadapersonalinterestinthebusiness.Knowingthat theyweregettingafairdeal,theywere contented,loyal,andanxioustomake thebusinesspay.

Thencertainbigfinancialinterests tookahandandforcedhimoutof business.Sincethefirmwasdoingso well,theyapparentlywantedallthe profitsforthemselves.Acertainbank tookpossessionandputinareceiver. Hethusshowedfromhisownexperiencesthatfinancialdictatorship exercisesastrangleholdoverindustry.

HEHELPEDTHEWORKERS.

Afterlisteningforsometime,Icame totheconclusionthatthemanyou werespeakingofwasMr.-,for whomIworkedforsixteenyears. Vourconclusionwascorrect.

Iwouldliketosaythatwhathesaid inhisletterwasperfectlytrue. Beforedealingwiththeletterover theair,Iwenttothetroubleofverify. ingthestatementsitcontained.But theendorsementofhisstatementsby menwhoworkedforhimhasavalue allofitsown. Icannotspeaktoohighlyofthegood thingshehasdonefortheworker.

1havealreadymentionedsomeof them,andtheydeservethecommendationofallfair-mindedmen.Other measureswhichhesponsoredtosecure thewell-beingofhisemployeeswillbe mentionedasweproceed.

Whenanemployeewastakenill,his wageswentonasbefore.

Therearepeopleinthebusiness worldwhothinktheCommandment "Thoushaltnotsteal,-doesnotapply tobusinessandwhoconsequentlyregardanythingtotheirownadvantage asfair.

Whenthereceivertookover,hegave usaweek'snoticeandsaidhewould reduceourwagestof.5perweek.We decidednottostartthemill.He appliedtotheCourtandthejudge orderedusbacktowork;soback toworkwewent.

Thedecisionofthejudgewasdoubtlessacorrectapplicationofexistingindustriallegislation.Butthatonly goestoshowtheextenttowhichour industriallegislationfallsshortofthe reqirernentsofsocialjusticeaccording toChristianstandards.

ItistothecreditofAustraliathat Industrialconditionsherearemuch betterthantheyareinothercountries.Thatistrueandcannotbe reasonablydenied.Butitisbeside thepoint.Therealquestionatissue isnotwhetherourindustrialconditionsarebetterthantheyareinother countries,butwhethertheyarejust.

WHATCANWEDO?

Wouldyouagreethattheworkers shouldinterestthemselvesin"BusinessMan's"casetoseethathegets afairdeal?

Iagree.

Theworkersshouldmakeuseof everyconstitutionalmeansattheirdisposaltoseethatjusticeisdone.The proposalsyousubmitarequitein order.

However,itwouldnotbewisetoresorttoastrikeexceptasalastresort wheneveryothermeanshasfailed. Strikesgenerallymeanconsiderable sufferingfortheworkersthemselves; theyfrequentlyfailintheirobject and,particularlyinthepresenttimeof nationalemergency,theyshouldbe avoidedasfaraspossible.

Thecaseisonewhichdeservesthe supportnotonlyoftheworkersimmediatelyconcerned,butofallAustralianswhowanttoseetherequirements ofsocialjusticeembodiedintheindustriallifeofAustralia.

Beforeleavingthegrain-growingfor atime,itwillbeofinteresttonote thatexperimentsarebeingcarriedout herewithAustralianwheats,andfav- ourableresultsareexpected.

Plantationsform,amostimportant branchofthecountry'sagriculture.Oranges,lemons,grapefruit,olives, watermelons,figs,almonds,bananas, andtobaccoconstitutetheproductsof theplantationareas.Jewishfarmers usuallygoinformixedfarming,breed- ingcattle,andestablishingdairies.The olivegrovesare,unfortunately,notas numerousasofyore,eithernothaving beenreplanted,orhavinggivenplace tocitrusfruits.AsanAraboncesaid. TheNaziReligion.

Tomanyofus,thismayseemcommonplace,butwemustrecognisethe importantfactthattheNationalSocialistmovementinGermanyisaform ofreligion.Itclaimsthecomplete devotionofitsadherentsandcanbrook norivalloyalty.Thesewordsfroma KielHighSchoolpaper,publishedin 1935,aretypicalofmanystatements settingforththeNaziattitudetothe Churches: "WebelievethatGodhasrevealed HimselftousinourGermanbloodand Germanconsciousness,inourGerman homeandGermanhistory.Thatis ourGermanfaith.Weregard'heathen'asanhonourableterm,notasa reproach.WeareproudofourGermanfaith,ourNorthernHeathenism:.

TheChurchesinGermanyrepresent- edastrongspiritualforcethatwould challengetheState'sspiritualmastery ofthemindsofmen,unlesstheycould beharnessed.Forthisreason,Hitler, whenhefirstcameintopower,made abidforChristiansupportbyhisferociousdenunciationsof"GodlessBolshevism,"andbyavaguebutplausiblepromisetoupholdtheChurches. Thatwasin1933,butsoonhispurpose becameclear.

lieginningwiththeProtestant Church,hesoughttoimposeuponita Reichbishopandanorganisation whichwouldmaketheChurchaninstrumentforthepromotionofHitler's ambitionsforGermany.TheReich MinisterforChurchAffairs,appointed in1935,exercisedadictatorshipover theChurch.Trusteefundswereconfiscated,writingswerecensored,the Churchfunctionsofappointingpastors,examiningandordainingtheologicalcandidatesandholdingsynodswere suspended.Since1934therehasnot beenatimewhentherewerenotpastorsinprison.

ApostlesofTo-Day.

Yet,providentially,acertainsection oftheEvangelicalChurchhasremainedfaithful,preparedtotakeitsstand ontheunchangingdogmasofthe ChristianChurch.ItsattitudeisexpressedinthelastsermonofPastor MartinNiemollerbeforehis,arrestin 1937. Hesaid:"Wehavenomore thoughtofusingourownPowertoescapethearmoftheauthoritiesthan hadtheApostlesofold.Nomoreare wereadytokeepsilenceatman'sbehestwhenGoddemandsustospeak. Foritis,andmustremainthecase, thatwemustobeyGodratherthan man."

NazidealingswiththeCatholic ChurchinGermanyrevealthesame threateningfacts.BaldurVonShirach,theheadoftheHitlerYouth,declaredwaragainsttheCatholicorgani- sationsasearlyasMarch,1934,andin 1938practicallyalltheCatholicYouth organisationsweredissolved. Apol- icyofirritation,suspicionandhindrancehasbeencontinuouslysustained.WhenAustriacameintotheGerman Reich,theCatholicschoolswereclos-eddownwithouttheformalityofa vote.InPolandnakedpersecution hasreignedeversincetheconquest.

MonsignorRonaldKnoxdrawsthis deliberateandsignificantconclusion fromthehistoryofNazidealingswith theCatholicChurch:"Foronce,"he writes,"theChurchisbeingpersecuted notbecausesheisCatholic,butbecausesheisChristian.Itisprecisely becausesheistruetothespiritofher Masterthatsheishelduptoscorn: thereforesheisinexile."

WhatFreedomMeans. SohastheSwastika,theCrooked Cross,thrownsomelightonthemeaningoffreedom.Religiouslibertyhas beenrightlydescribedastheparentof politicalfreedom.Religiousliberty hasariseninthepastoutofman'spas- sionatedeterminationnottosjarrender topersecution.To-day,venthe totalitarianStatethreatenstocreate atyrannymorefrightfplthanthe worldhaseverseen,relaVisfaithhas anessentialparttoplayinthemaintenanceoffreedom.Onlywhenmenhavethelibertytoworshipandtoengageinthoseactivitieswhichlegiti- matelyariseoutoftheirworship,can thelifeofthecommunityandtheorderingoftheStateberegardedas firmlybasedonthevitalprinciplesof truth,justiceandfreedom.Inademocracytheseprincipleswillbenurturedandpreserved.Inatotalitarian Statetheywillbedestroyed.

Everydayonehearsastatement suchasthis:"Itmattersnotwhatreligionyouprofessprovidedyouplay thegame."Thissoundsverywell,but unfortunatelyitisfalse.ForJesus Christdidestablishonereligionandone Churchforthesalvationofmen.He guaranteeditagainstthepossibilityof teachingerrorinexpoundingdogmatictruth.HecalmlytoldhisInfant Church,thattheywhodeliberatelyshut theireyestoitsTruthswouldbe dammed.Soyouseeitmakesagreat dealofdifferencewhatreligionweprofess.Itisamatteroflifeordeatheternal.OutsidetheunchangingTruthsof RevealedReligionwefindwarringsects andcontradictorycreeds,evidentsigns thattheyaretheproductofman'sinvention.

MoralAnarchy.

Moralitywithoutafixedstandard andauthoritativeteachertocompel conscieisasabsurdasReligion without'Dogma.Bothareghastlyerrors,whichfeelathomeonlyineach other'scompany.

Europetodayisinthroesofadeath agony,becauseforgenerationsher leadershavespurnedthistruth.So calledphilosophersandscientistshave longbeenproclaimingtherightofman tothinkashepleasesaboutGodand theSoul,withoutanyrestraininginfluence-andman'srighttoconduct ormisconducthimselfatwill,withoutbeingtrammelledbyamoralcode. Suchteachingslammedthedoor againstbeliefinimmortality,orresponabilitytoaSupremeBeing-wasa cruderejectionofallthenobleraspir ationsofthesoul-awildassertion thatmanismerelyananimal,guided byinstincts,withnonoblerdestiny orbrighterfuturethanthebrutebeast.

Ifyouaskhowmencouldarriveat suchanappallingtheoryoflife,the answerissimplythis:Theyhavere jectedthefundamentalsofChristian Faith.Theyhaveturnedawayfrom HimWhoaloneistheLightofthe worldandconsequentlytheyfellinto intellectualandmoralchaos.ForgenarationspastthenameofGodhas beenbanishedAtomtheLegislative Hallsofnations.TheGrandOrient Symbols,theHammarandSickle,and finallytheSwastika,replacedtheCross ofChrist. Justicedisappearedfromthetables offinance.ThewillofGod'sChurch

wascarefullyoustedfromInternationalConferences.Theyouthofthe landwasbroughtupinschoolsof paganatmosphere,withnoreverence forauthority,saveaslavishdeference totheCivilLaw.Theatmosphere thuscreated,providedafertilefield forgreed,avariceandlustforpower. Henceitisthatcertainleadersofmen, againstalllawshumananddivine,are abletodrivewholepeopleswithout thebridleofmoralityorFaith,tomoral andphysicaldestruction.

SocialAnarchy.

Again,takethesocialsPhere.For acenturyandmore.CapitalandLahourhavebeeninmortalgrips,while anarchy,likeabirdofpreyhovered overthem,waitingforanopportunity tobringbothdowntogetherinwhirlpoolsofblood.Andthiswillcontinue, inspiteofpenalties,prisons,andexternalremedies,untilmen'sheartsare purgedofmaterialism;men'sminds areenlightenedbyChristianteaching -untilSocialJusticeontheonehand, andrespectforauthority,ontheother, arefirmlyestablished.

EDUCATIONTHEREMEDY.

Andthiswillbeachievedonlybyeducation-educationoftherightsort, fromtheclassroomsofplasticyouth, tothesedateParliaments,whereour nationalsentinelsguidethedestinies ofourrace. Theworldwillneverbecomemoral orhonestuntiltheyouthinourschools areequippedwithtruereligioustraining-untiltheyaretaughttoguard heartandhandandintellect;until wearealldeterminedtofulfilthe dutiesimposeduponusbyanUnseen AlmightyJudge,untilwerealizethat wearemorally,justwhatwearein theeyesofGod.Thatwearehereon earthtoworkoutoursalvation,independentofwhatourfellowmenmay sayorthinkordo.Thatourjustice aboundmorethanthatoftheScribe andPharisee,andthatpride,hypocrisyandstubbornadherencetoerror mustbedispelledbytheeffulgentrays ofChristianteaching.

Thereisnouseoursayingweare fightingforChristianity,whileweviolatethefundamentallawsofChristianity;sacrificetruthtomotivesofselfinterest,andcausehavocinourhearts bythesamespiritualdiseasewhich broughtdownanathemauponthe Pharasaichypocritesofold.

Wesay,andsayrightly,thatweare fightingforChristiancivilization,and atthesametimethousandsoftraitors tothatcause,areenteringthedivorce courtseverymonth,toaskamanto dissolveasacredbond,concerning whichtheDivineFounderofChristian Civilizationdeclares"Letnomanput asunder." Arenottheypresent-dayPharisees, whoprofesschristianity,andatthe sametimepracticeandunblushingly advocateBirth-Prevention,acrime whichtheGodofTruth,3,000years agoproclaimedtobea"detestable thing." Itisarranthypocricytopretendto keeptheoutwardceremoniesofchristiancivilization,whileunderminingits foundationsinthehome,theschooland insociallife.

Therefore,ifwearetoescapethe condemnationofthePhariseesofold, theremustbeachangeofheart.If weexpecttheGodofArmiestolead usontovictory,wemustfirsthumbly bendourneckstoHisauthority,open ourintellectstoHisTeaching,and shapeourmoralconducttherebyin publicandprivatelife.Abovethe moralruinandintellectualchaosof thepresent-dayworldoneinstitution standserect,andthatinstitutionis theCatholicChurch.Hersupernatural systemcontainstheremedyforthe

world'sills,ifpeopleonlyheedher teaching.Thevastexpanseof2,000 yearsiswitnesstotheworkforhumanity.ShelistenedtoJesusChristin SamariaandGalilee;heardPaulpreach atAthensandPeterinRome;saw Jerusalemrazedtothegroundandthe cityoftheCaesar'sperish;foughtdespotsanddictatorsthroughtheMiddle Ages,andmouldedEuropeanCivilization,andisto-daytheoneauthentic witnesstotheTruthsofRevelation, theirgrowthanddevelopmentthough theages.

TheChurchalliesherselfwithno politicalparty,nornationalGovernment,forhermissiontomankindplaces heroutsidethemall.Andwellhasexperiencetaughtherthatthepolitical idolsofto-daymaybecomethepoliticaloutcastsofto-morrow.Shehas seenempiresriseandruleandpass away.Consciousofhereternalheritage,sheremainsunchangedmidstthe world'spoliticalvicissitudes,unafraid amiditspanic,calmasTruth,patient asEternity.Adherencetoherteaching affordsagoldenkeytoopenthegates oftheKingdomofHeaven.

Catholicismandthe Russo-GermanWar

Hitlerisattemptingtoconverthis warofaggressionagainstRussiaintoa crusadeagainstthemenaceofCommunismtotheworldand,byposing asliberator,hehopestosplitopinion inthedemocraticfrontsothathemay concentrateunhinderedonthedestructionofpossibleoppositionfromthe East.Inthefollowingletter,publish. edin"TheTimes,"onJune25,BarbaraWard,secretaryoftheCatholic organisation,"SwordoftheSpirit," foundedbyCardinalHinsley,analyses thepurposeofthislatestproductof theNazipropagandamachine.

"Itisayearsincethosemelancholy hourswhichsawthecollapseofFrance, whenwesawhowfarNazismcould exploittheanti-Communistfeelingsof undoubtedlysincerementomakethem preferdefeat,capitulation,occupation, exploitationinthehandsoftheNazis tothepossibilityofaCommunistrevolt.Wecanhavenodoubtthatthis techniquewillbeusedagainwitheven greaterforcenowthatintheirpursuit ofworlddomination,theNazishaveattackedRussia.Inparticular,they willtrytoexploittherepugnance whichCommunismcausestheChristianconscience,tomaketheChristians ofthiscountryandoftheNewWorld towithdrawtheirsupportfromthe fightagainstHitlerismandtojoinin theagitationfora"negotiatedpeace."

Theverylaudableendeavoursnowbeingmadeinthiscountry andoverseastolaydownplansforpost-warreconstructionbefore theproblemactuallyconfrontsthenationcannot,ofcourse,confine themselvesmerelytothere-absorptionofsoldiersintociviloccupationortotheredistributionofmunitionworkersintopeace-time industries.Theproblemwillhavetobeseenasawholetobeseen atallcorrectly.Thetimeforpatch-workpoliticsisover.The veryword''reconstruction''spellssomethingradical;itsuggests demolition,andbuildinganew(necessarilyperhapsinstages)butat leastfromaplanenvisagingthewhole.Nofactorinthesepostwarplanscanignorethevitalquestionofeducation,foritsmisuseis thesourceofmanyofthesocialillswhichafflictoursocietyto-day. Sincemodernlegislativeauthoritieshavetakenuntothemselves, willy-nilly,thecontrolofeducationandconferredupontheirpeoplesthetwindubiousblessingsofhavingitfreeandcompulsory, itmaynotbeamisstopauseandtoinquire(ifonemaybeheard abovetheshoutingoftheprogressiveevolutionists)preciselywhat advantagesarebeingderivedfrommoderneducation,sowidespread andeasytohand.Wedonotproposetodiscusssecularismasa systemorexaminationsasthenarrowconsummationofthatsystem. TheCatholicviewofsecularismseesitasaheadlessstatueinafruitlessgarden.Whatwewishtodemonstrateisthatsecularism,faced withacrisis,collapsedfromitsownconstitutionaldebility.And more,thatinthepursuanceofitsownavowedobjectives,ithas proved tothepointthatwecallchronicinvalidism. * * *

Whensecularismthrewovertheoldclassicalsystemofeducation, whichatleastlentthemindsomesortofbroadcultureandflexibility, ittookonsomethingoftheaspectofamachine,whichbegantoturn outatypeofautomatonwhosechiefandonlyvirtuewasmonotony. Theclerks,garagehands,mechanicsandtypistesofitsmanufacture wereidealintheirway,buttheirmindswerecrushedbythepressure ofasolitaryideaandtheiridealsstultifiedbytheinsufficiencyofa singleaspiration.To-dayamanmaybecomeanartist,butthishe mustachieveinspiteofthehandicapofamoderneducation.The "depression"unmaskedsecularismfortheshallowmontebankitis. Itsavowedobjectwastotrainyouthtogoodcitizenshipwithout employingmoralsanctions.Itsyoungcitizensfoundduringthe "depression,"thathowevergoodmightbetheircivicspirit,theywere withoutalastingcity.Infacttheystoodinthemidstofsomething thatwasratherliketheruinsofacity.whichwereknownasoldas Babylon.Materialismhadfallendownonthatsideofthemaintenanceorder.Secularismwasfaithfullyproducingitslarge-scale automata,buttheycouldnotbeabsorbed,becausetheeconomic machinerywasfastfallingintoirreparabledisrepair,andpartlybecauseitsserfswerestandardisedtosuchanextentthatwhilethere weresomemillionsofqualifiedclerks,manytradeswerecomplaining bitterlyabouttheshortageofskilledlabour.

Sotherearoseaclamouraboutthedivisionoflabourwhichled logicallytotheconsiderationofwhatispopularlycalled"vocational guidance."Theword"vocation"wasalreadyatime-honoured termamongCatholics,whohave,however,forsomeobscurereason, consistentlyconfineditsusetothepriestlyorreligiouslife.Yetthe ideaisgrowingthateveryonehasavocationtosomething,beitto butcherdomorbishopric.Obviouslyitwillnotdotocontinue pushingschoolchildrenthroughthesamecurriculum.Onceitis cededthateveryonehasavocation,thenextimportantquestion shouldbedirectedtothestatetowhichoneis"called."Divine Providencedoesnot,however,revealone'sdestinydirectlybyaseries ofpersonalrevelations.Thisknowledgeistobededucedfromthe naturallikingsandaptitudesofthevariouschildren. Sofar, vocationalguidanceisverymuchintheair.Inmanyrespectsitis themostimportantproblemfacingthemoderneducationalist.Yet itspracticalintroductionintotheschoolswillbehamperedandrenderedvainuntilsomethingrevolutionaryisachievedinindustrial, economicandpoliticalaspirations.Atthepresentmomenttheonly vocationalguidanceisexpediency.Onemusttakewhateverclassof workisavailableandbethankfultogetit.Butunderanintelligentlyplannedeconomyitwouldbepossibletoco-ordinatethe functionsoftheteacherandtheemployer.Inthemeantimeit mightbepertinentlyinquired,whatisthepointofallthespecialisation?Itwouldbesurprising,butperhapsnonethelesssane,ifthere wasapartialreversiontoamoregeneraltypeofeducationwhich wouldgivetochildrensomethingofamoreflexibledispositionof mindtomeettheever-likelytransferencefromoneoccupationtoanother,whichhasbecomeamatterofevery-daynecessity.

Doesourmanneroflovingtallywith theirs?Doesourliferevolveabout theHolySacrificeoftheMass,anddo wehungerdailyfortheBreadofLife? Dowenothungerratheraftermoney, andease,andtemporalenjoyment?Do weblessourenemies,orarewenot ratherinclined,ifnottocursethem, thenrepaythemintheirowncoinaneyeforaneye,andatoothfora tooth? Iwillnotpursuethecomparison-orrathercontrast-further.

Wemusthonestlyadmitthatwe Australianshaveverylitheknowledge ofwhatarealChristianlifeis.How thencanweunderstandPopePiusXI's definitionofCatholicAction-"CatholicActionisCatholiclife"?Ifweunbutweunderstandneither.Where shallwefindout?

IhavebesidemealittleAustralian CatholicTruthSocietypamphletthat saysveryemphatically:"ThisisCatholicAction."Itiswrittenbyan Australianlayman,K.W.Mitchell,can behadforthreepence,andwillgive you.inafewshortpages,aninsight intoCatholicAction.Letustakea briefglancethroughittogether.

"ThisisCatholicAction"isdivided intothreeparts:astatementofthe aimsofCatholicAction;anoutlineof themethodswearegoingtousein achievingthoseaims;andanaccount ofaspecialisedsectionofCatholicAction,viz.,theLeagueofSt.Joseph. ThisbodyoriginatedinMelbou.i.e, anistheCatholicActionorganisation fornarriedmenworkingforwages.)

Tothemajorityofusthefirstsection ofthis,twastriphletwillbearevelation. WedidnotknowthatthereisadistinctlyCatholicway,notonlyofsayingprayers,butofdoingourevery-day tasks,suchaschoppingthewoodor sweepingoutthehouse.TheredefinitelyisaCatholicwayoflife,andit isthetaskofCatholicActiontomake Catholicsrealisethisimportantfact.

Todothis,CatholicActionmustbeorganised.

Upuntilrecently,andinmanycases evennow,weCatholicshaveliveda defensivekindofexistence,keepingour Catholicityprettywellcloakedlestit shouldbeexposedtothefrostybiteof ourpaganassociates.Nowitistime forustocomeoutofoursnugwinter quartersandadoptamoreaggressive typeofbehaviour;itistimeforusto carrythefightintotheenemy'sranks.

Butwearenotgoingtodothishotheadedly;althoughretainingourdovelikesimplicity,wemustnotbelacking intheguileoftheserpent.Nocampaignwasevercarriedtoasuccessful conclusionunlessitwasfirstcarefully planned.CatholicActionneedstobe anorganisationwithitsplanofcarr.paignwellmappedout,knowingboth whatitisgoingtodoandhow.We knowthesuccessCommunistshave achieved.Why?Becausetheywere wellorganised,hadadefiniteplanof campaign,andpossessedcapableleaders.WhatisitthatHolyScripture says-"Thechildrenofthisworldare wiserthanthechildrenoflight."

CatholicActionistheorganisation.of thelaity,undertheirownleaders,with theauthorityandunderthedirection ofthebishop,toachieveaverydefiniteend.Thismaybebrieflysummed

upasthebringingaboutofaCatholic wayoflifeinthecommunity. Whetherwerelishthefactornot,we mustadmitthatAustralia-weshall consideronlyourowncountry,althoughsheisneitherworsenorbetter thanmostothercountries-islargely pagan;thespiritofChristisabsent fromourpolitics;ithasnopartinour businessdealings;and,saddestofall, itislackinginourschools,thecradles ofournation. ItistheavowedaimofCatholicActiontobringChristbackintothe heartsoftheAustralianmultitudes.At thepresentmomentitisimpossibleto leadareallyCatholic,Christ-likelife

withoutmakingtremendoussacrifices; itrequiresadegreeofheroismtoohigh tobeexpectedfromtheaverage,easygoing,unheroiccitizen.Ittakesa gooddealofmoralcourageforayoung Catholicladtowithdrawquietlywhen hiscobbers-goodpagans-indulgeina beerparty,or,astheysay,haveasession;ittakesanevenbraverspiritto retainasobercountenancewhenthe restarelaughinguproariouslyata dirtyjoke.Inbrief,tobeagoodCatholic,inourpresentsociety,youhave tobeamoralhero.Itistheaimof CatholicActiontochangethisstate ofaffairs.TousethewordsofK.W. Mitchell,in"ThisisCatholicAction," CatholicAction"wantstobringabout astateofsocietyinwhichmenand womencanbeChristianswithouthavingtomakehugesacrificesassomanydointhesedays."Inotherwords, CatholicActionintendstochangeour environmentfromapagantoaChristianone.

Weknowthejobwehavetodo; whatmethodsarewegoingtouseto accomplishit? Clearlyitisnotatasktobeundertakenbyanyoneindividual.ThereChristianisationoftheAustralianpeopleissuchatremendoustaskthata unitedeffortonthepartoftheCatholiclaityisessentialifourworkisto succeed.Thisunityofactionweshall notobtainunlessweareorganised.

"ThisisCatholicAction,"byMitchell, saysCatholicAction"isaplain,practicalorganisationinwhicheveryCatholiccanplayarealpart."And again,"CatholicActionisnotjustany workwhichanindividualmaydoas anindividual CatholicActionisan organisedapostolate."

Nowthefirstthingrequiredbyan organisationisleaders:uponthemdependsthestrengthoftheorganisation. Iftheleadersarecapable,enthusiastic,andselfsacrificing,CatholicAction, theorganisationofthelaityforthe re-ChristianisationofAustralia,is boundtosucceed.Thenucleus,then, ofeveryCatholicActiongroupisa littlebandofmilitantCatholicswhom wecalltheleaders'group.Our pamphletsays:"Thestrengthofthe wholeorganisationistheleaders'group inaparish."Theseleadersdecide whatworkneedsdoing,whoshalldoit, andhowitwillbestbedone.The natureoftheworkwillbedetermined bytheparticularenvironmentinwhich theorganisationfindsitself;andthose chosentodoeachparticulartaskwill beindividualssuitedtothesurroundingsinwhichthetaskistobecarried out.Letusreferagaintoourpamphlet.quotingPiusXI,"Fortheenvironments:apostlesfromtheseenvironments."Andalittlefurther down,"Eachsituationwillhavethen itscorrespondingapostle;theapostles oftheworkerswillbeworkers;the apostlesofthefarmerswillbefarmers;theapostlesoftheseamenwillbe seamen;theapostlesofthestudents willbestudents."

SomuchforthemethodsofCatholic Action.Ihavemerelygivenyoua taste;youknowwheretogoifyour appetiteisunsatisfied(anditshould be).

IsCatholicActionimportant?I hopethatwhatIhavewrittenabove haspersuadedyouthatitis.However, somepeoplethinkwearemakingmuch fussaboutlittle."Whynot,"they say,"gotoMass,sayyourprayers,do goodwork,andingeneralleadagood Catholiclifewithoutallthisfussand botheraboutorganisationsandleaders?"Suchanobjectionsoundswell, butwillnotbearcriticalobservation.I thinkwemightjustasreasonablyask, "WhydomenjoinreligiousOrders?" POPEPIUSXII.

Alittlemorethan2yearsagoPope PiusXIdiedmurmuringthewords, "Peace,Peace,"withhisdyinglips. Hissuccessor,CardinalPacellibecame PopePiusXII.ThepresentPope camefromanobleRomanfamily,who havelongservedtheVaticanCity. HisyoungerbrotherwasanintermediarybetweentheItalianGovernment andthePopein1929whentheLateran Treatywassigned.

ThepresentPopewaselectedSupremePontiffonhisbirthday,March2, 1939.Oneofhisteacherswhoisstill alivethendeclaredthatasapupilhe wasserious,studiousandverybrilliant, amodeltootherboys.Healwaysmade adailyvisittothechurch.In1899he wasordainedapriest.Duringthefollowingyears,PopeLeoXIIImarked hisbrilliantqualitiesasheusedhis priestlyinfluenceamongyoungmen ofhisownage,whowerebeingledinto thefalsedoctrinesofSocialism,He wasabrilliantpreacherandallwho heardhimpraisedhismovingqualities, In1914PopeBenedictXVappointedhimsecondinchargetoCardinal Gasparri,theSecretaryofState.Here heshowedhisbrilliancebyaquick andunerringgraspofthecharacter andsignificanceofhappeningsinseveralcountriesoftheworld,during theterribleandanxiousdaysofwar.

In1917hisdiplomaticcareerbegan.HewassentasPapalrepresentativetoMunich,andbeforeleaving RomewasconsecratedArchbishopby thePopehimself.InGermanyhewent tothewarzonetoseetheKaiser,and urgedhimtoplacenoobstaclesinthe pathtopeaceevenshouldthiscost Germanysomesacrifice.Unfortunately, thechurch'speaceeffortsof1917did notsucceed,butArchbishopPacelliperformedmarvellousworkamongprisonersandvictimsofwarinBavaria, Wheredistressingconditionswerea naturaloutcomeofchaos.ii,:hethick ofhisanxietiesinMunich,hemade mandfriends,butalsomanyenemies, especiallyamongCommunists,who werealreadyplanningrevolutionon thechaosinGermanyin1917. AtthecloseofthewartheRevolutionbroke,andArchbishopPacelliwas orderedtoleavethecountry.Buthe stayedon,calminthemidstofchaos, anddeterminedtodefendhisoffice withhislife.Ononeoccasionterroristsburstintohisresidenceandthrust arevolveragainsthisbreast.Hesternlyreprimandedthem,reasonedwiththem,andpersuadedthemtoleave. In1919hewasrecalledtoRome,but returnedtoGermanyin1920toarrangeaConcordatwithBavaria.At thesametimehewascalleduponto alleviatedistressexperiencedbythe Ruhrpopulation,asaresultoftheindustrialandsocialrestrictionsimposedbythecontinuedAlliedoccupation,In1924hetookupresidencein BerlinasPapalNuncio.Hispolitical manners,tactfulness,cordiality,and linguisticabilitymadehimpopular throughoutGermany.

ButthePapalNunciosawbeneath thesmoothsurfaceoflifeinGeralbeitinamodifieddegree;andsuch acommandcannotbecarriedoutif wearegoingtoworkasindividuals. Inobediencetothevoiceofthe Pope,welaymenaregoingtoorganise, undertheguidanceofourBishop,for thisgreatworkofteachingmento knowandloveChrist.To-daywe haveamuchbetterchanceofsuccess thantheclergy;for,whereastheaveragemaninthestreetwillavoidapriest liketheplague,hecanmeetusonhis owngroundandoftenevincesagenuinedesiretodiscussreligioninallsincerity. Theleavenmustworkfromwithin, saidPiusXI.YouandIandother ordinaryCatholicsaretheleaventhat mustworkfromwithinthemassofAustralianpeople.But,asIhavealreadyemphasised,wecandoverylittle inthisworkofspreadingtheknowledgeandloveofChristunlessweare organised.Individuallyourworkwill besporadicandineffectual;organised itwillbeperseveringandproductiveof muchgood-itwillberealCatholic Action.

Libertyexistedinplentybutfor thewrongpeople.ExtremistsWere workingtobringaboutNationalSocialism.whichdideventuallycome intopowerin1933,andbroughtwith it,Hitler.In1929,despitetheextremists,ArchbishopPacellimadeaConcordatwithGermany.Thisexcited worldcommentandapplause,andhe linguisticabilitymadehispopular complainedofembarrasment.

Itwasthemostoutstandingworkof hisdiplomaticcareer,andPopePius XIgreetedhimwithaffectionandenthusiasmonhisreturntoRome.In 1929hewascreatedaCardinal,and in19:30becameSecretaryofS'ate.It isinterestingtoknowthathiscareer inthisnewsphereopenedwithconsiderationofAdiolfHitlerandGermanaffairs.Afterextremelydifficult negotiationsoveraperiodoftwoyears, hisdiplomaticmasteryprevailedand HitlersignedthefirstConcordatmade betweenthatcountry,undertheThird Reich,andtheVaticanCity.ButHitlerhassincebrokentheConcordatand persecutedGermanCatholics.

In1936CardinalPacellimadeavisit totheUnitedStates,andwasreceivedasaprince,withceremonyand respect,byPresidentRoose',e1.tatthe WhiteHouse.

ThepresentPopehasbeenLegateto numerousEucharisticCongresses,principallyBuenosAiresin1934,andLourdesin1935.Healsoofficiallyblessed andopenedtheBasilicaatLisieux.He visitedEnglandthreetimes,thelast being1911whenheattendedthe coronationofKingGeorgeV.

Conversantwiththeintricatenature ofworldaffairs,andhavinghadknowledgefirsthandoftheGermanbackground,heisidealforhispresent office.Butfiraveandanxious,helooks onaworldagaininchaos,andsees brotherfightingbrother.AthisCoronationMassheusedachalicebequeathedtohimbyPiusXI.Apriest haswrittenofit,thus:"ALitterchalicewastheheritageofPiusXI,and thereislittlehopethatPiusXIIwill finditsweeter."Ne,asfaithfulCatholics.shouldprayearnestlyfortheHoly Father,whosePapaltiarahasbecomeacrownofthorns.AtthebeginningofhisponCficate,hesaidhe issued"Aninvitationtopeace to peacebetweennations,inbrotherly love"Wemustthereforeprayfor this,hi.,specialintention,foreverbear inginmindhisPontificalmotto,"The AimofJusticeisPeace."

Butthemanwasn'tjoking.Hewas animportantofficialofabigbroadcastingconcernandheknewagood voicewhenheheardone.Directly Philrealisedthis,hehurrieddownto thestudio,andoncemorehisgood°Ad blarneyluckcameupandkissedhim.

ItwasGuyLombardothistime. Thepopulardancebandleaderhappenedtobeinthestudiojustthen,lamentingthefactthatheneededagood tenorfortheBurnsandAllenprogrammeandhadnoideawheretofind one.Althoughhewasinanother officeatthemomentandknewnothing ofyoungRegan,heabsent-mindedly switchedontheloudspeakerjustas Reganwasgivingalyricexplanation of"HowIrelandGotItsName."It musthavebeengood,forjusttenminuteslatertheyweresigningayears contract,givingReganasalarythat wasfourtimesasmuchashehadbeen gettingasadetective.

SoundsLikeaYarn. Therewasnothingsyntheticabout Regan'sIrishluck,anditranonand on.Then.atChristmastimein1933, hepaidaflyingvisittothewestcoast toattendtheopeningofGuyLombardo'sorchestraatthefamedCoconut-grove.Hehadnomotionpicture ambitions,butwhenafilmexecutive sawhimdancingwithGracieAllenand askedhimtotakeascreentest,hedid so.

ThetestwasexcellentandacontractwithWarnerBros.followed.It lookedmostimpressiveonpaper,but thestudiowasn'tmakinganymusicals justthen,andthoughhewascastina numberofrolestheywerenotthesort thatbestdisplayedhistalents.Hollywoodisconstantlydoingtheseunaccountable,heartbreakingthings-as AllanJones,WalterPidgeon,Preston Foster,StanleyMorner,orNelson Eddycouldhavetoldhim.(Nelson Eddyhadbeenundercontractto M.G.M.fortwoyearsbeforehewas givenaroleinwhichhecouldsing!)

Butyoucan'ttreattheIrishlike that,sofirstthingHollywoodknew, PhilReganhadabrogatedhiscontract andsalliedforthonapersonalappearancetour.ButeventheHollywoodexecutiveshavelucidintervals, andwhentheRegantourbeganchalkingupnewrecordsallalongtheline Paramountofferedanicenewcontract, whichhesigned.Hisfirstrolewas theromanticleadinamusicalfeaturingTommyDorsey,andcalled"Las VegasNights."

Regan'slifestorysoundslikeatypicalAmerican'successyarn,yetdespitehisverygoodluck,therehasbeen plentyofhardwork,plentyofdiscouragementanddisappointment.Buthe doesn'tmindthat."Peoplewhinetoo much,"hesays."Theycomplainthat lifeistoohard,wheninrealityitis theywhoaretoosoft.Lifeisglorious, evenwhenit'sdifficult!Ourforefathers,especiallythosewhocamehere whenthiscountrywasyoung.werethe oneswhohadrealhardship,yetwhata magnificentheritagetheyleftus!The troublewithmostofusisthatwe haveawhollyfalsesenseofvalues,and wefeelthatlifeowesussomuch, whenitiswewhoarethedebtors.

"Ithinkthisisespeciallytrueinthe modernattitudetowardmarriage.Too manyhesitate,wonderingwhetherit's reallygoingtogivethemalltheywant, orwhethertheycanaffordit.They wantguaranteesofhappiness,prosperity-,andwhatnot,insteadofviewingitasagloriousadventure.

ItisgratifyingtorealisethatRegan'swholesomeoutlookisbasedon hisownpersonalexperiencerather thanmeretheorising.Hewasmarried whenhewasbarelyseventeentohis sixteen-year-oldsweetheart,and,despitethebuffetingsofbothbleakpovertyandbrilliantsuccess,themarriage hasbeenoneofutmosthappiness.His lovelyyoungwifeistheproudmother offourbeautifulchildren-twoboys, JosephandPhilip,junr.,andtwogirls, JoanandMarylin-andtheirhomelife istheadmirationandenvyofallHol lywood.

Despitehisownnormal,well-balancedviewpoint,heisquicktodefend Hollywoodfromunjust.criticism. thingsconsidered,Hollywoodisno differentorworsethananyothertown ofsimilarsize;peoplethinkitisbecauseeverythingthathappensisso extravagantlypublicised.Igrantyou thatdivorceislookedupontoolightly, butthatistrueeverywhereto-day. Conditionsinwhatusedtobecalled 'theupperclasses,'everywhereare muchthesame.

"Afilmplayercanliveanysortof lifehewishesinHollywood.That's whyninetypercent.ofusliveas quietlyandsimplyaswedo.Noone isobligedtobegayorhectic.The reallyimportantpeople,thosewhoare doingthebig,finethingsinpictures, don'twasteeithertheirmoneyortheir energiesinthefantasticmannerthat outsidersimagine.It'stheoneswho arenotcertainoftheirplaces,andwho feelthattheirnamesandphotogaphs mustbeconstantlypublicised,who createfalseimpressionsinthepublic mind."

Thereismuchvirtueinagoodjoke, andvaluablemedicineinahearty laugh.

Itisalmostadefinitionofmanto sayheisabeingthatcanlaugh.

Certainlythefacultyforlaughterdistinguishesusfromothercreatures.The angelsmayweepatourfollies,butit ishardtoimaginethemlaughingatus. Animalsdonotlaugh,althoughwedo rrovidethemwithenoughmaLelialfor theiramusement.Someoftheseadvertisements,forinstance,areenough tomakeacatlaugh;butnooneoutsideWonderlandeversawacatlaugh, stilllessahorselaugh,althoughmany peoplemayhavefanciedthatthey heardthelatter.Thelaughingjackasshasthereputationofbeingalightheartedbird,thoughthetitledoesnot suggestthattheexpressionofitsgaiety ispopular.Butnodoubtthesoundit makesisnature'scompensationfor havingtodealwithsnakes.Abird thatkillssnakesforalivingmightso easilybecomesoured.Allthesame, thelaughingjackassdoesnotlaugh. Neitherdoesthehyena,thoughthisunpleasantanimalalsohadareputation forraucousfun.As"Punch"putit:

More,perhapsthegreatestEnglishman thateverlived.Hishumourbecame alegendinEngland,andeventhough hewasmisrepresentedandmisunderstoodhisgenialspiritconqueredall. Nooneexceptafanaticalpuritancan assertthatMorelackedseriousness.He wasdeadlyserious;hesacrificedhis lifeforhisprinciplesandforhisFaith. Yetinspiteofpersecutionandsufferinghecouldlaugh,andmakeothers laugh,evenwhentheywerenearto tears.

Scholarshavetriedtodiscreditthe traditionthathislastwordwasajoke. Scholarsliketodiscreditanythingwidelyheld.Westillprefer,becauseitis perfectlyincharacter,thetremendous paradoxwhichdescribeshimas"the martyrwhodiedlaughing."Laughtersuchashisisasignofthehighest courageandthemostcompleteselfforgetfulness.Ifwehadsomeofhis humourandsomeofhiscouragewe shouldbehappier,andweshouldbe abletospreadhappinessashedid.

Thereis.ofcourse,afalselaughter. Theworldisfullofit,andthatiswhy, perhaps,thatwedonotrealisethat truelaughterisathingofthemind, foundedinjoyofspirit.Muchofthe laughterwehearisbutanimitation. Itdependstoomuchonthefantastic anticsoftheimpossiblecreaturesof thecomicstrip.Ithasnotthemerit ofbeingsatire;ithashardlyeventhe savinggraceofwit;itismerelyabsurdityrunriotbutleadingnowhere. Ittendstoneglecttheintellectwhen itisnottheverynegationofintelligence.Atitsworstitissomething wicked;atitsbestitismerelyemptyheaded,theexpressionofthe"vacant mind,"ifonemaymisuseafamous phrase.

Yetthelaughterofthecomicstrip isatleastlaughter,andasmuchhas itsmerits.Therealenemyoflaughterisitsfalseimitation:cynicism. Cynicismistheveryantithesisofjoy andcontentment,andgreetsgaietywith asneer.Laughterthatmocksand sneersisthecruelweaponofadiabolicalmind.Itwoundsanddestroys happyhearts,andcanmakecowards ofallbutthebravestsouls.Open hostilitywecanbear;enmitywecan overcome;butthesneersofthecynic willshakeourresolutionandundermineourcourage,andevenperhaps destroyourveryfaith.

G.K.Chestertonhasdescribedthe worlddominatedbythecynicinanessayon"TheScepticasaCritic".It isaworld"spinelessandspiritless,like abroken-backedworm;loatht.omely slowandlaboriouslikeanendleseLaug: despairing,butnotwithdignify;blaspheming,butnotwithcourage;withoutwit,withoutwill,withoutlaughter orupliftingoftheheart;toooldto die,toodeaftoleaveofftalking,too blindtostop,toostupidtostartafresh, toodeadtobekilled,incapableevenof beingdamned,sinceinallitsweary centuriesithasnotreachedtheage ofreason:'Wedonotmendourfollieswhentheyarepointedoutbythe rapierofthesatirist,butwetooeasily loseourwisdomwhenwearelaughed atbythecynic.

Hemakesusbrighter,hecheersusand lightenstheburdensoflife.Gaiety foundedinsimplicityofspiritrisestriumphantoverdifficultiesandlaughs atthetricksoffate. ButmanhasanIntellectualRight toProperty.

Itisessentialtohiscompletenessas aresponsiblebeing.Thefrustration ofanindividual'stalentunderaproletariansystemhasalreadybeenreferredto.Likewiseeachmanhas withinhimafundamentalpsychologicalcreativeurge.Mostmendesire toimpressthemselvesontheirenvironmentandtochangeitinsomeway, eitherbymentalorphysicalendeavour.Thiscanonlybeachievedwhen amanisfreeandhasthemeanswith whichtodoit,i.e.,whenheownsproductiveproperty(naturallyincluding hisownmentalcapacities).Withregardtolandownership,ithasbeen claimedbymanythat,thoughman hasarighttothepossessionofgoodshe produce's,hehasnorealrighttothe ownership-ofthelanditself.Butthis argumentcanbeseenasfalsewhen itisrememberedthatmanbyhisown effortshasmadethatlandfertile,has turneditfromitsrawstateintoa wealth-producingasset,andhasasit wereimpressedhisownpersonality uponit.

Artinitselfhasnothingtodowith beauty-itonlyconnotesskill.We merelyapplythetermbeautifulto suchartasimmediatelyappealstous. Thereforeeveryintelligentmaker, everyworker,isanartistinthetrue senseoftheword.Personalworkis artisticcreationandnotmerely drumtoil.Workhasadignityallits own,andeveryworkerisaresponsible rationalbeingwithadignityanda willofhisown.Takeawayaman's responsibilityandyoudeprivehimof anessentiallyhumancharacteristic. Andtoartificiallydivorceamanfrom themeansofproduction,todenyhim therighttoproductiveproperty,is surelytodeprivehimofresponsibility inhisworkandthejustprideresulting therefrom.Itmakesofhimafactory "hand,"asheisonlytoowelldescribed,whom,unfortunately,theemployer hastoclotheandfeedandtrain,and thereforemoreofaliabilitythanisa machine.Thereforeanysystem underwhichthemassofthepeopleare forcedtoswelltheranksoftheproletariathasreducedthemtoasubhumamondition.

AndI,inthemilkthat Iimbibedwithsuchdelight,lovingly drankintheadorablenameofJesus, YourSonandmySaviour."

Francis,accordinglyashegrewup, displayedaquickness,playfulness, andprecocityofintelligence.Pica, withoutdespisingtheseadvantages, stroveabovealltoformhisheart,and developthehappyinclinationssheobservedinhim.Wasshenotright?

Themindonlyholdsthesecondplace inthemoralworld;theheartisthe masterpieceofmanandthemainspring oflife;itisitwhichgivesallouracts theirgoodorbaddirection.Now,it hasonlytwomovements-itexpands orcontracts;itgivesitselfuptogood orsacrificeseverythingtoself.Ina word,itisselfishnessorself-devotion; andaccordingasitselectsoneorother ofthesetwoways,itdrawsthewhole soulafterit.Everything,then,dependsontheheart,andtheheartitselfobeysthefirstimpulseithasreceivedinearlyyouth.Picadidnot lostsightofthesegrandprinciples;she madethemherruleofconduct,and sparednovigilanceorsolicitudetoensuresuccess.Tosowtheseedsoffaith andvirtureinherson'ssoul,toacustomhislipstoprayer,toinitiatehis heartinthejoysofcharityandselfdevotion;suchwasherconstantpreoccupation.Onhisside,theangelic childcorrespondedadmirablytosuch solicitude.Hisyoungsoulexpanded withdelighttohismother'steachings, astheflowerexpandsitscalyxtothe firstraysofthesun;andtheycould alreadyforeseethatthisblessedplant wouldonedaybeardeliciousfruit.

OurreadershaveseenPica'sactive shareintheeducationofoursaint.The littlewehavesaidisenoughtoglorify her,forthevirtuesofthesonare chieflytheworkofthemother,the naturalinstrumentofProvidencein theaccomplishmentofsanctification; shesows,andGodgiveslifeand growth.If,then,lateron,Francisbecomesthepassionateloverofthepoor, ifamiabilityformsthesalientfeature ofhisphysiogomy,ifheisattachedby everyfibreofhissoultotheRoman Pontiff,if,infine,theSonofGodhonourshimwiththeStigmataofHisPassion,imprinteduponvirginalflesh,we donothesitatetosayitistoPicaprimarilyredoundsthehonour!Happy thefamilieswherethemotherunderstandshermissionsowell! Thehourwascometoformthemind ofFrancis.Hisparents,desiringhe shouldreceiveaneducationinaccord withtheirfortuneandtastesoftheage, confidedhimtopiousecclesiasticsof theparishofSt.George.Hisquick andlivelyintelligencerelishedthe charmsofpoliteliteratureinwhichhe maderapidprogress,andeasilyacqiredLatinandFrench,"alreadyregardedinItalyasthemostdelightful ofalltheguardianofthechivalrous traditionsthatgaveapolishtotheruggednessoftheMiddleAges."-Ozanam.

Youngmenputhimattheirhead,he wasthesoulofalltheirreunions,the kingofalltheirfeasts,theirleaderin everyadventurousexploit.TheinhabitantsofAssisi,too,intheirenthusiasm,hadproclaimedhim"the floweroftheyouth."
