Butitdoesnotfollowthatallsocial conventionsshouldbediscarded.Only thoseconventionsshouldbediscarded whichareimmoralorunreasonable.

Leninhassaidinhisworks(Vol. xiv.,p.70),publishedbytheState PublishingDepartmentinMoscowin 1929:"Wemustfightagainstreligion. ThisistheA.B.C.ofallmaterialism andconsequentlyofMarxism."

AndfromthattimeontothepresentdaySoviet"ropagandaringsthe changesonthistheme.Forexample, thefollowingstatementismadein "Pravda"July20,1939):"Theantireligiouspropagandahasinourcountrythecharacterofastatepolicy:it isanintegralpartofthewholepolitico-educationalandpartyset-up."

Suchastatementisamplyborneout byArticle122and126ofthePenal Code:Thegivingofreligiouseducation tochildrenshallentailoneyearof forcedlabour.Theperformanceof anyreligiousriteinanyStateinstitutionortheinstallationofanykindof religiouspictureentailsthreetosix monthsofforcedlabour.

Thesesentenceshavebeenselected fromhundredsofsimilarones.They allgotoprovethatanti-religiousactivityinSovietRussiaisnota"casual excess,"a"misinterpretationofCommunism,"butitsfundamentaltask.

TosiVerstandwhyreligionisso odious,totheCommunists,wemust firststuds-theirdefinitionofreligion andtrytoseehowtheyexplainthe reasonsfortheoriginandspreadof religionamongmen.Tothephrase "Religionistheopiumofthepeople," Leninaddedthelegend"asortof cheapbook.""Itisfearthathas createdgods,"hesays."Helplessin thefaceoftheexploiters,theworking classperforcebeginstobelieveinanotherworld,justasthehelplesssavagebegantobelieveingods,devils, andmiracles."

Butscience,theCommunisticleadersclaim,hasprovedthatthereisno God.AndTchalov,anotorioushero ofSovietaviation,hascontributedhis bittothispropagandabyasserting that"allthesestoriesaboutGodsittingintheskyarefunnytome;I knowhowitisupthere,andIhave notseenanygods."

All thereligionsareorgansofbourgeois reaction,servingtodefendtheexploitersandstupefytheworking classes."

Havingnotedinthesequotationsthe reasonsfortheCommunists'struggle againstreligion,itbecomesinteresting tostudythemethodstheyuse.

Tobeginwith,duringthecivilwar inRussia,religionwasconsidered merelyasanaspectofcounter-revolution;accordinglyitwasbrutallysup-

pressedandpersecutedbythehideous Cheka,betterknownastheG.P.U.,the Sovietofficialspecialpolice.Itwould beimpossibletogivehereanadequatedescriptionofthoseterrible years

Yetonlywithaknowledgeofsuch excessescanweunderstandStalin's boast:"Havewecrushedthereactionarypriesthood?Yes,wehave."

Butpersecutionofexistinginstitutionswasnotenough;theSovietGovernmentcametorealisethatpersecutionfrequentlymakesresistance stronger.Thereforeitsaimwasto raiseupagenerationwhichwouldbe absolutelyfreeofanysuchtainted ideas.

Thefirstattemptwasto"corrupt theChurch,"followedbyarevelation tothepeopleofscandalswhichwould naturallyrepelthem.Theleaders foundedanewinstitution,amereparodyofanesslesiasticalorganisation, called"TheLivingChurch."They engagedboguspriestsandbishopswho ledlooselives,drinking,andhobnobbingwithwomenandwiththeAtheists.Thisattemptwasunsuccessful; forveryshamethepeopleofRussiaalmostcompletelyboycotted"TheLivingChurch."

Theanti-religiouscompaignwasnot confinedtotheRussianOrthodox Church.Themagazine"Bezbojnik" (No.4,1927),pointsoutthat"Christianity,IslamismandJudaismare equallyhateful."Itwastoeliminate allreligionthatasystemofdeliberate atheisticeducationwasstarted.
