THEORIGINALSOFTHE GOSPELS.

Arethereanyoftheoriginalcopiesof theGospelsinexistence?

WedonotpossessanyoftheoriginalmanuscriptsoftheFourGospels, nor,indeed,ofanyoftheBooksofthe OldorNewTestament.

Neverthelessitiscertainthatthe Gospelswhichwepossessto-dayare sUbstantiallyaccuratecopiesofthe originals.Yearsofpainstakingwork bytheworld'sleadingScriptural scholarsexaminingandcomparing thousandsofcodices,manuscriptsand versions,andusingallthescientific aidstoresearchatourdisposalto-day, hasestablishedtheintegrityofthe Gospeltextbeyondreasonabledoubt.

Asaresultoftheirworkandapart altogetherfromtheologicalconsiderations,wecansaythat,withtheexceptionofanunimportantwordorphrase hereandthere,wepossesstheGospels astheywerewrittenbythefourevangelists.

WHATDOESINSPIRATIONMEAN?

WhenwesaytheBibleistheWordof Goddowemeanthateverythingin itistrue?

Wedo.Butwemeanmuchmore thanthat.

InsayingthattheBibleintheWord ofGod,wemeanthatGodHimselfis theAuthoroftheBookswhichconstitutetheBible.Thehumanwriters, likeSaintsMatthewandLuke,were simplytheinstrumentsusedbyGod inordertoexpressallandonlywhat He(God)wishedtoexpressinwriting. Atypistewhotypesaletterdictatedbyabusinessmanisnottheauthor oftheletter,thoughshedoestheactualwritingortypingofit.Thereal authoristhebusinessman.

Now,GodistheAuthoroftheBooks whichconstitutetheBibleinamuch deeperandtruersense.

Hedidnotsimplydictatetothe humanwriters.But,bythepower andauthoritywhichHealonepossesses,Hetookcompletecontrolof theirmindsandwillsandalltheirfaculties.And,withoutdoingviolence totheirfreedom,inducedthemto writedownwithunerringaccuracyall thatHewishedtowrite.

Heusedthesewritersastheywere, withtheirmentalequipment,their ideas,experiences,associations,andso forth.Andasthesedifferineachindividual,theywillnaturallyresultin differentliterarystyles.Thus,the differentliterarystylesofthehuman writersoftheSacredBooksdonot alterthefactthattheirrealAuthor isGod.

ThatGodistheAuthoroftheBooks whichconstitutetheBiblewecan knowwithcertaintyonlyfromthe teachingoftheinfallibleChurchfoundedbyChrist.Itisonlyfromthe samesourcethatweknowwhatbooks werethusinspiredbyGodand, thus, belongtotheBible.

BecauseGodistheAuthorofthe Bible,everythingintheBiblemust betrue,inthesenseinwhichitwis intendedbytheAuthoroftheBible.

ThetruthoftheBibleisthenatural consequenceofitsDivineauthorship ItmustbetruebecauseGod,theInfiniteTruth,isitsAuthor.

ItisscarcelynecessarytoobservethattheabsolutetruthoftheBible doesnotimplythetruthofeveryinterpretationgiventobiblicaltexts. Onlythoseinterpretationsaretrue whichrendertheexactsenseintended bytheAuthoroftheBible.

TosaythateverythingintheBible istruedoesnotmeanthatitcontains thefullorcompleteRevelationofGod. Infact,theBibleexplicitlystatesthat itdoesnotcontainthewholeofChrist's Revelation.(Johnxx,30;xxi,26.)

Itseemstome, however, thatyour friend'sobjectionwasduetoamisunderstanding.WhattheChurchforbidsisnotthereadingoftheBible; itisthereadingofnon-CatholiceditionsoftheBible.Thereasonofthis disciplinarylawistobefoundinthe factthattheProtestanteditionsofthe BibleomitseveraloftheBookswhich theChurchholdstobeinspired, and oftencontainsannotationswhichthe Churchregardsaserroneousandmisleading. TheChurchhasnottakenthisstep inordertopreventhersubjectsfrom gettingthetruth, asherenemiessuggest, butpreciselyinordertopreserve thetruth.

WatchingtheLegionatworkto-day oneistemptedtothinkofthisageof CatholicActionasa"SecondPentecost,"bringingwithitaneweagerness amongthelaitytoco-operatewith ChristinthetremendousworkofRedemption.

TheLegionapproachtoanyproblem isanimatedbyaverypracticalappreciationofthefactthatMary'sfunction towardstheMysticalChrist,orthe Church,isidenticalintheorderofgrace withherfunctiontowardsthehistoric Christintheorderofnature.Which meansthatjustasMarywastheinstrumentthroughwhichthegrowingChrist wasnourishedandcaredforbythe fatherlongyearsago,soto-daysheis theinstrumentthroughwhichthemysticalChristiscaredfor,nourishedand fedonthesupernaturallifeofgrace, untilattheendofTimetheChurch willhavereacheditsfullstature,asit were,throughhermotheringandnourishingofmen(asMediatrixofgraces).

Onethingiscertain:thatthelaisserfairewhichwastheidealoftheearly nineteenthcentury,andwhichnot merelyopposedStateinterventioninindustrybutalsofavouredfreecompeti- tionbetweenproducers,hasgonefor good.Themovementinthedirection ofmonopolyviacombination,cartellisation,'integration"ofindustries,subsidiaries,holdingcompaniesandsoon willcontinueanddevelop,andthere isarealdangerthatweshallfindourselvessaddledwithallthedisadvantageswhichaccompanyStatesocialism withoutthepubliccontrolwhichis claimedasanoutstandinggainfrom thesocialisationofindustry.Thehistoryoftheshipbuildingindustryin GreatBritainanditsattemptsat"rationalisation"sincethelastwar(NationalShipbuilders'SecurityLtd.,Bankers'IndustrialDevelopmentCompany) hasnotbeensuchastoinspiremuch confidencethateconomicplanningcan besafelyleftentirelytoprivateinitiative.Thosewhohavefollowedthe controversiesabouttheaffairsofRichardThomasandCo.(EbbVale Works),tosaynothingoftheattempt in1935toestablishasteelplantatJarrow,mustfeelseriousmisgivingsabout thepolicyoftheIronandSteelFederation.

Theproblemis,ofcourse,tosecure anadequateandefficientsocialcontrol ofoureconomicsystemwithoutsacrificingtheadvantageswhichcomefrom leavingindustryandcommercetobe runbytheinitiativeandenterpriseof individuals.Ourexperienceofthe efficiencyofGovernmentdepartments isnotlikelytomakeusanxioustohand overtothemthevastproblemsofproduction,distributionandexchange.On theotherhand,theeconomicsystem isonlyapart,thoughamostimportantpart,ofthesocialsystem,andthereforefallswithintheprovinceofthe State,whichischargedwiththeduty ofharmonisingprivateactivitiesin orderthatthegeneralprosperity,materialaswellasspiritual,ofthecommunitymaybefurthered.Thatthe solutionistobefoundalongthelines ofwhatiscomingtobeknownas"a corporativeorder"(soeasilydistorted intothe"CorporateState"oftheFascists)iscommongroundtoallsociallymindedCatholics;anditissignificant thatquiteindependentlyofanyCatholicinfluencetendenciesinthisdirection arealreadyshowingthemselvesinthis country.Thatsolicitorsandarchitects arenowdemandingthattheirprofes-
