seeing that we spilt our blood so freely for Germany in the World War?" An exhaustive memorandum was sent to the Fuhrer and Chancellor of the Reich enumerating the dangers arising from the persecution and oppression of the Christian conscience. The bishops of Fulda issued a separate message to the clergy, which contains: "It is sad enough, in all conscience, when an unrestrained press, and even organs of the press designed for the young, are allowed to drag in the
mud the celibacy of the clergy, the confessional, the veneration of relics, and nearly all the dogmas of the Church, without Article 5 of the Concordat affording any protection to the reputation and persons of the clergy." A Famous Speech. On February 9, 1936, Bishop Galen, of Munster, made a speech at Xanten which has become famous: "See how Holy Church, the Pope, the bishops, priests and religious, see how the loyal children of the Church to -day in Germany are insulted, reviled and derided publicly and with impunity. How many Catholics, priests and laymen, have been attacked and insulted in the papers and at public meetings, driven out of their professions and positions, and imprisoned and ill-treated (Continued on Page 20.)

the like, there was little chance that their protests would ever reach the world outside Germany. The bishops' protests were frequent and uncompromising. They gave a lead to their flocks. On many occasions they spoke up for those numerous Catholic civil servants who lost their posts under the new Government, because they could not in conscience be a party to actions which were unworthy of Christians. In 1934 Bishop Kaller, of Ermland, made some sharp comments on the attacks on the Church: "We declare with sorrow that during thy last year or two movements and currents of opinion have appeared and grown stronger in our Fatherland which are directed against the fundamental truths of the Catholic Church, and aim at setting up a new religion-a German national church founded on the myth of blood and

Bishop Ehrenfried, of Wurzburg, reviewed the situation for his people and spoke clearly: "Do you want only the rights of bare necessity, or do you want full rights for your Church? Better yourselves and defend the full rights of your Mother the Church!" The combined Pastoral of the bishops assembled at Fulda had been awaited with suspense. It appeared on August 20, 1935: "It is in a very grave and decisive hour that the bishops, by means of this Pastoral, address the Catholics of Germany.... From the tomb of St. Boniface there came forth to us bishops the injunction to send a pasThe shop for Better Value. From ancient times it has been the custom not only to name the bells, but to have sponsors for them, the sponsors choosing the name. It is no more than a custom, but it is a picturesque custom.
The bell at the Albany church bears the following inscription in Latin and
French:
"The hand of the Lord brought me out to the way of the South" (Exec. XL, 24.) "My name is Mary of Bourbon. 'First Sponsors: The Duke of Parma; Marianne, Duchess of Cadaval.
