"It(Christmas)hasbeenintroduced intothereligionoftheChurchas the'Christ-Mass',butneveroncedo wefindtheterm'Christmasusedin theBible."

Itistruethattheword"Christmas" isnotfoundintheBible.Butwhy thesillyinferencethat,therefore,the Bibledoesnotgiveagenuinehistorical accountoftheBirthofChrist,orthat theChristianChristmasdoesnotreally commemorateHisBirth?Theword Christmasisnotmentionedinthe Bible.ThereforeChristwasnotreally bo',or,atleast,HisBirthwasnot worthyofspecialhonourandrejoicing,andChristmasdoesnotreally commemorateHisBirth.Whatreasoning!Whatlogic!Whatmagnificenthistoricalsense!

"Ithasbeena'Day'forcelebrating thebirthdayofage-longgodsof variedhue."

"TheearlyPuritansin1644forbade theobservanceofChristmas,declaringthedaytobesetasideasamar ketday,andtheeatingofplum puddinga'heathenishpractice."

Correct.In1644,byActofParliament,Christmaswasdeclaredadayof fastandamarketday;shopswere compelledtobeopen,andplumpuddingsandmincepieswerecondemned asheathen.

Andthatisadamningindictment ofthePuritans.Itshowsthatthey hadfailedtograspthesignificanceof oneofthemostbeautifulandglorious truthsofChristianity,andweredeaf tothe"goodtidingsofgreatjoy"announcedtotheshepherdsbyangels:

"ThisdayisborntoyouaSaviour whoisChristtheLord."

Thementalitywhichseessomething uncleanandimmoralintheassociation ofthespiritualwiththematerialhas nothingincommonwithgenuine Christianity, norwithsaneandnormal humaninstincts.Itlogicallyinvolves thedenialoftheIncarnation, bywhich ahumannaturewasexaltedtothe verythroneofGodthroughitsunion withthePersonoftheSonofGod.

HehavesaidthatGodistheAuthor oftheBible.Wedonotmeanthat GodwrotetheBible,butthatthemessageitcontainscamefromGod.An authordoesnotnecessarilywritehis ownbooks.ThegreatEnglishpoet, Milton,becomingblind,didnotwrite hismostfamouspoems.Hedelivered thethoughts;anotherwrotethem.So, too,themessageintheBiblecamefrom God:humanhandswroteit.Those writerswerecalledinspiredwriters. TheywroteundertheinfluenceofGod: andthatDivineInfluenceiscalledInspiration.SometimestheInspired WriterwarnedhisreadersthathiswrittenmessagecamefromGod.Forexample,intheBookofJeremias,you oftencomeupontheexpression,"The wordoftheLordcametoJeremiassaying,"etc.Thisexplainsthestatement: theBibleisthewordofGod;andthis inturnexplainswhygodlypeopleprofesssuchreverencefortheBible.

TheNewTestamentcontains,aswe havesaid,theinspiredwritingsofthose whowroteafterthetimeofChrist. Eightinspiredwriterscontributedthe NewTestament.Fiveofthosewriters wereApostles,whiletheotherthree wereco-ministersoftheApostles.The NewTestamentisfamiliartoyouunder thetitleof"TheEpistlesandGospels," extractsfromwhicharereadtoyouon Sundaymornings.TheGospelsmay beroughlydefinedasshortlivesofOur Lord,tellingusthedoctrinesHetaught, anddescribingthe'deedsHewrought. TheEpistlesmaybedefinedassermons writtentodifferentChristiancommunities,justasbishopswritepastoralletterstothedifferentchurchesoftheir diocesesatdifferentpartsoftheyear.

Protestantsmaintainthattheir teachingisinconformitywiththeNew Testamentteaching,whereasCatholic teachingisatvariancewithit.In advancingthispositionagainstCatholics,theycontendthatallChristian doctrineiscontainedintheNewTestament,andconsequentlyanydoctrine notcontainedthereinisfalse.Catholicsdenyallthis,forthereisnotthe slightestsuggestionintheGospelsor EpistlesthatallChristiandoctrineis containedinthem.Thecontraryis clear.ForifanyoneoftheGospel writersintendedtogiveusacomplete categoryofChristiandoctrine,thenone Gospelwouldsufficeandnotfour,or again,thefourGospelswouldbeexactlythesame,whichisnotafact.

St.John,ontheotherhand,was preachingtotheGentiles,whonever heardoftheMessias,ortheMessianic prophecies.Hispurposeinwriting hisGospelwastoconvincethemthat ChristwasGod,byHispoweroverthe lawsofNature.Hencehestressesthe miraclesthatChristwrought.HeexplicitlytellsusthatthiswashispurposeinwritinghisGospel,forhesays: "ManyothersignsalsodidJesusinthe sightofHisApostles,whicharenot writteninthisbook,butthesearewrittenthatyoumaybelievethatJesusis theSonofGod.'

So,too,withregardtotheEpistles, fourteenofwhichwerewrittenbySt. Paul.liesentoneEpistletothe ChurchatCorinth,anothertothatof Ephesus,andsoon.IfSt.Paulmeant inanyofhisEpistlestogiveacompletecatalogueofChristiandoctrine, allhisEpistleswouldbethesame,but thisisfarfrombeingthecase;andit wouldbeasinconclusivetoholdthat allSt.Paul'sEpistles,together,cover thewholerangeofChristiandoctrine astoholdthatallthepastoralsofa bishopcontaineveryArticleofour Creed.Consequentlyyouseetheweaknessofstatementscommonlymadeby sincereProtestants,suchas'Idonot acceptthedoctrineofPurgatory,becauseIfindnoreferencetoitinthe NewTestament."Statementsofthis naturearebaseduponthefalseassumptionthatallChristiandoctrineisto befoundintheBible.

Since,inthelifetimeoftheApostles andSt.PaultheGospelsandEpistles werescatteredamongstthedifferent Christiancommunities,amongwhom theywerewritten,ortowhomthey weresent,whenandbywhomwere theycollectedandaddedtotheBible?

ItisahistoricalfactthattheNew Testamentwritingswerecollectedand addedtotheBiblebytheCatholic ChurchattheCouncilofCarthageinthe year393.Muchlabourandpainwas spentbytheCatholicChurchinstudyingthosewritings,beforeShedecided thattheywereinspired.ThesewritingswereselectedbytheChurchfrom amassofotherGospelsandEpistles whichwereerroneouslysupposedby manytobeinspired.IAlsmanyasfifty GospelsandEpistleswerefloatingaroundamongstthefaithfulatthat time,suchastheGospelofSt.Joseph, theGospelofSt.James,etc.Withthe exceptionofthosewritingsnowinthe NewTestament,alltheotherswererejectedasfalse.

Sowehavenowtheremarkablefact thattheNewTestamentwritings, which aresupposedbyProtestantstocontra. dicttheteachingoftheCatholic Church, wereactuallyselectedbythe CatholicChurchastheinspiredword ofGod.

Thefirstgreatdifficultythenthat confrontsProtestantsistoanswerthe question:"WhydidtheCatholic ChurchselecttheNewTestamentwritingsandsolemnlycommandhersubjectsthroughouttheworldtoregard themastheinspiredwordofGod,if theyflatlycontradictedherteaching, esneciallysinceitistheuniversalpracticeoftheCatholicChurchtocondemn allwritingsthatcontradictherteaching?"Theassumptionisaspreposterousasifalawyerindefendingthe claimsofaclienttosomepropertywere tospendmuchlabourinstudyingdocumentsbearingonhiscaseandfinally selectingdocumentsrejectinghisclaims, weretoargueinthecourtsthatthese documentsweregenuineandauthentic.

Equallydifficultisthequestionfor Protestantstoanswer:"Whyshould theCatholicChurchatgreatlabourand expensekeepcopyingtheScriptures fromcenturytocentury-fromthe fourthtothesixteenth-iftheScripturesbeliedherclaims?"Whatfamily wouldperpetuatethroughitsdescendantsdocumentswhichdisprovedtheir claimstoestatesintheirpossession? Thedocumentswouldsurelybeunpleasantinstruments.Whynotlet themperishwithage, ratherthanpreservethemwithpains?Equallypreposterousistheassumptionthatthe CatholicChurchcopiedfromcenturyto centuryaBiblethatdeniedherclaims andrejectedherteaching.
