England Returning to Spirit of Faith Says Canadian Bishop Holy See Now Pro.round admiration for the spirit of the British people was expressed by the Bishop in Ordinary to the Canadian Forces, Mgr. C. L. Nelligan, in a broadcast to Canada from England. "It is only fair and just,- said the Bishop, "that I should record as my keenest and most profound impression the admiration that I feel for the spirit of the British people in this crisis through which they are passing. "By their courage and their fortitude they are writing an epic of heroiSm that has few parallels in the history of any nation. "I am sure that in the crucible of war the soul of England is being purged of all materialism and paganism, and that she is returning more and more to that spirit of faith that was once her pride and her joy. "I feel confident that in the purifying flames of sacrifice, borne with true Christian resignation, she will come forth from the struggle regenerated and rejuvenated to continue her benign role among the nations of the world. "My visit to the different units of our Canadian Forces, and my contact with the chaplains, combatant officers, Auxiliary Services supervisors, and men, convince me that the same excellent spirit is to be found among them
also,
" s".3, are no doubt thinking longingly of home, but they are proud and happy to be taking part in this struggle for the continued enjoyment of the heritage of civil and religious liberty Which they prize so highly. "Their popularity with the English people, and the many acts of kindness received at their hands, help them to feel at home so far away from their kith and kin. "I am sure that it will bring you comfort and consolation to learn also that the spiritual interests of your boys are being well looked after, as not only are their chaplains devoted and zealous, but indeed the officers without exception seem to appreciate more and more the importance of the chaplains' work, and co-operate with them in every way possible to render it increasingly effective."-"Universe."

According to reports in the Spanish Press, from Chile, Jirmino Alvarez, a well known Spanish "Red" leader, once chief of a squad of statue burners daring the Spanish campaign, ha' died there. He himself burned the celebrated image of "The Crucified Christ" in oartagena. It appears that the unfortunate man was standing near a petrol lorry when one of the barrels falling near him burst, enveloping him in flames. He died in hospital after eight days of frightful suffering.

German Bishops Will Not Support Nazi Regime Despite all the efforts of the Nazi Propaganda Office, the German Hierarchy has not yet issued a statement supporting the Nazi regime. One was confidently expected after the Fulda meeting of the Bishops in the autumn, but at the personal re quest of the Holy Father the matters discussed were kept secret and no offi cial statement was issued.
All state-
ments regarding what was said at the meeting are therefore spurious. The fight against the Church is being carried on relentlessly, though subtly. Suppression and ridicule are the methods being used, as open antagonism just now-when the people need the solace of religion more than everwould arouse bitter feelings. The German Hierarchy is completely deprived of all means to communicate freely with the faithful. No letters from the Bishops are now read in the churches and the Bishops do not wish to express their views for fear of further suppression. Ridicule of Clergy. The Anti -Christian campaign among the young consists chiefly of ridicule of the clergy, the faithful and all things religious. Young people who insist on going to church are considered "reactionary" or "backward." The Catholic Press has been completely suppressed and Catholic associations are banned, so the faithful receive only those facts which the government choose to give them. The semblance of religious liberty can therefore be maintained.

RED LEADER'S TERRIBLE DEATH.
Priests who are not favoured by the local Nazi leader are removed quietly. No one knows what happens to them. Recently about 60 priests have been removed in this way, and it is known that there are at least 23 Catholic priests of German nationality in the concentration camps. None of them has had a legal trial. More than 500 Polish priests were recently rounded up and sent to the notorious Sachsenhausen camp, near Berlin. In the Army the anti-Christian cam -
Canada's Catholics Almost Double in 25 Years Quebec. Canada's Catholic population has almost doubled in the past 25 years. The latest figure, given in the "Almanac of Catholic Social lAttion," is 4,662,238. In 1915 Catholics in the Dominion numbered 2,881,361. The Church in Canada now has: 4,936 parishes, I Cardinal, 60 Archbishops and Bishops, 8,899
priests,
6 universities,
435 hospitals.
Canadians of French origin number 2,881,361, and 97 of every 100 are Catholics. Catholics of Irish origin number 384,748, but this only accounts for 21 per cent. of Canadians of Irish ancestry. paign goes on. Christian traditions are gradually being stamped out and individual priests and lay people are now forbidden to send religious literature to soldiers or officers on duty.
Victory Plans. If the Germans win this war, it is generally anticipated that all vestiges of Christianity would be ruthlessly wiped out and a "National Church" founded, entirely based on the pagan conceptions of "blood and soil" and promulgating teachings directly opposed to the fundamental tenets of Christian Doctrine. The Churches are still open in Germany, and the majority of the people still practise their religion, but a new generation is growing up in open antagonism to all Christian traditions and
standards of culture.-"Universe."
Cardinal Joins Vichy Council Cardinal Suhard, Archbishop of Paris, is one of the 188 members of the new
National Council established by Marshal Petain, says the "Universe." Three other priests are also members. French newspapers, says "The Times," describe the new council as "a synthesis of the spiritual and material energies of France and of the Empire." They also note that the members have been chosen from all sections of the people and that among them are many fathers of large families. This is regarded as an indication that Marshal Petain still intends to give a prominent place in the new France to the family as a unit and to large families in particular.
