Providedthereisnoinvalidating.im. pedimentarisingfromDivineLawitselfas,forexample,theexistenceofa previousmarriagebond,theCatholic ChurchrecognisesthemarriagesofnonCatholicsamongstthemselvesasvalid intheeyesofGodandbindinguntil death.Wheresuchmarriagestake placematterslittle.

CanTheyMarryAgain?

CouldaProtestant,marriedinthe ProtestantChurchandlaterdivorced,marryaCatholicintheCatholic Church?

Theanswertothatquestionshould beclearfromwhathasalreadybeen said:TheChurchrecognisesthemarriageoftwonon-Catholicsasvalid,

providedthereispresentnoinvalidatingimpedimentarisingfromDivine Law.TheChurchteachesmoreover, thatwhentwobaptisedProtestants contractavalidmarriage,thesaid marriageistrulyaSacramentofthe NewLaw;oneoftheseveninstituted byOurLordJesusChrist.

Ontheotherhand,theChurchdoes notrecognisetherightorpowerofthe CivilAuthoritytodissolvethebond ofmarriage. Assuming,then,thatthefirstmarriageoftwoProtestantswasvalidaccordingtoDivineLaw,theChurch wouldregardthemarriagebondas stillexistingintheeyesofGod,even afteracivildivorcehadbeenobtained.Forthisreasonshewouldnot recogniseanynewmarriageasvalid beforeGod,whilebothpartiestothe firstmarriageremainedalive. Iunderstandthattwopersonsmarried intheCatholicChurchcannotobtain adivorceandre-marry.

TheCatholicChurchteachesthat marriagewhichisvalid, sacramental andconsummatedcannotbedissolved byanyearthlypower, andthatthe bondenduresuntilthedeathofone oftheparties.Thatappliestothe marriagesofProtestantsamongst themselvesaswellastothemarriages ofCatholics.

Ihopetheforegoinganswersmake cleartoyoutheattitudeoftheChurch tothemarriagesofProtestants. But itisdifficulttoexplainthewhole teachingandlegislationoftheChurch onthesubjectofmarriageinafew briefreplies.Pleasesendmeyour nameandaddress, andIshallpostyou someliteratureexplainingthematter ingreaterdetail.

Thatquestionisnotassimpleasit looks.Buttheanswertoitmaybe simplifiedbycallingtomindafew basictruthswhichweknowbothfrom reasonandfromDivineRevelation:

(11FrometernityGodknowsaccurately,inminutedetailandwithabsolutecertainty,everythingthatoccurs fromthebeginningoftimetotheend.

(2)Allcreatures,livingandnonliving,rationalandirrational,areabsolutelysubjecttotheProvidenceand GovernmentofGod,sothatsimply nothingcanoccurwithouttheappro. valor,atleast,thepermissionofGod.

(3)God'sProvidenceextendsina specialwaytorationalcreaturesbecauseoftheirintrinsicdignityand worthandtheirhighdestiny.Itembraceseachindividualandthehuman raceasawhole.ThosewhoarechosenbyGodtoplayaspecialpartasinstrumentsofHisbenefitstothehuman raceas,forexample,theApostles,are againtheobjectofahigherProvidencethanisgiventothemajorityof men.

Letusnowapplytheseprinciplesto thequestionofmarriageor,rather,individualmarriages.

Godknowsfrometernityeverymarriagewhichtakesplaceintimefrom thebeginningofthehumanraceto theend.Nomarriagecouldpossibly takeplacewithoutatleastthepermissionofGod.

Marriageswhicharecontractedwith arightintentionandinaccordance withtheLawofGod,madeknownto usbyreasonandRevelation, arefrom eternityknownandapprovedand blessedbyGod.inthissenseitmay besaidthatmarriagesaremadein heaven.

Marriageswhicharecontractedin violationofGod'sLaw,whethernaturalorrevealed,arefrometernity knownbyGodandpermittedbeHim. GodpermitssuchmarriagesasHepermitsotherformsofmoralevil:simply

Nomarriage,goodorbad,happyor unhappy,isdeterminedbyfatalistic necessity,forDivineProvidencehere aselsewhereleaveshumanfreedom intact.

MixedMarriages.

ElementsofaMoralAct.

Ourprocedurewillbetosetdown ingeneralthedeterminantsofamoral Act,andthenapplythemtowar.In everymoralactthreeelementsmust beconsidered:First,theobject;second,theintention;andthird,thecircumstances.Notoneofthesemaybe contrarytothemoralorder,iftheact istobeconsideredmorallygood.To expressthisideaweoftenuseanold Latinmaxim:"Bonumexintegra causa,malumexquocumquedefectu"; thatis,allthemoraldeterminantsof anactmustbegood-itsobject,itsintention,anditscircumstances.If onlyoneofthemisnotgood,theact cannotclaimtobehollygood.

AllElementsMustBeGood.

Itcannotbetoooftenrepeatedthat allthreeelementsmustbegood-the actionitself,theintention,andthe circumstances.Anactmust,therefore,begoodnotonlyinitsendbut initsmeans.Thatiswhatthemodernpaganforgets.Hethinksthat becausetheendisgood,hecanuse anymeanshepleases.No!Theend neverjustifiesthemeans.And,incidentally,forthosewhohavebeendeceivedbylies,theJesuitsnevertaught anythingelsebutthistraditional Christiandoctrine.

Abomberisameanstowin awar:touseittobombhospitalsis notproportionatetothewinningof warand,therefore,unjustified.There maybenolimittowhatmenwilldo inwar,because,physically,theycando anything;butthereisalimittowhat theymaydoinwar,because,morally, theyoughtnotdocertainthings;for example,theyoughtnotkillprisoners ofwar,makeimproperuseofaflagof truce,forceconqueredpeople,and,particularly,women,tomarchinfrontof soldiersintobattle.TheCatholic Churchofficiallybelievesthataerial bombardmentofcivilianpopulations isanunjustifiedmethodofwar,and "OsservatoreRomano"oftheVatican, onJune10,1938,declaredthatthepribtestsoftheworldagainstbombingsin Spainwerejustifiedbythefactthat thecentresbombedhadnomilitary interest.

TwoConsiderations.

Two'practicalconsiderationsfollow fromthisCatholictheologyofwar:

First,weChristiansshouldnever talkofwar,astheworlddoes,interms

TheChristian,inoppositiontothe spiritoftheworld,shouldthinkof warfirstandprimarilyintermsof justice.Wheneverthereisjustice thereisfreedom,butwhenthereisfreedom,thereisnotalwaysjustice.There canbefreedomwithoutjustice-and (hatisthebasicreasonwhythereis warto-day:menwantingtobefree fromdiscipline,andparticularlyfrom dependenceontheJusticeofGoi

ItisindeedinterestingthatOur Lordneverpraisedthosewhosought freedomapartfromjustice.Never didHesay:"Blessedaretheywho hungerandthirstafterfreedom,"but Blesedaretheywhohungerandthirst afterjustice"(Matt.v.,6),and"Blessedaretheythatsufferpersecutionfor justice'ssake,fortheirsisthekingdomofheaven"(Matt.v.,10).Let usthen,inthenameofGod,stoptalkingaboutfreedomuntilwedecidewhy wewanttobefree;letus,whenthe worldhasgonemadwithfreedom alienatedfromthelawofGod,unfurl theflagofjustice-thenweshallle free:"Seekyefirstthekingdomof GodandHisjusticeandallthese thingsshallbeaddeduntoyou"(Matt. vi.,33).

Secondly,sincetheGodofJusticeis theGodofCharity,itfollowsthatalthoughawarmaybejustified,onemay notenterintoitinaspiritofhate.We toooftenidentifywhatisreallyasin againstcharitywithaloveofjustice. Itispreciselyagainstthisdivorceof justiceandcharitythattheChurch cautionsus,evenintimesofwar.If youhavereadtheutterancesofthe HolyFatheryouwillnotehowlaceunto hisMasterheneverseparatesthecondemnationofinjusticefromtheplea forcharityandprayer-thehatredof enmityfromtheloveofenemy.Justicemaydemand,inhistory,physical resistancetoanaggressor'sphysics"!assault;butcharitydemandsthatwe prayforhisconversionfromhisonslaughtagainstthemoralityandjusticeofGod.
