Ontheotherhand,theChurchdoes notrecognisetherightorpowerofthe CivilAuthoritytodissolvethebond ofmarriage. Assuming,then,thatthefirstmarriageoftwoProtestantswasvalidaccordingtoDivineLaw,theChurch wouldregardthemarriagebondas stillexistingintheeyesofGod,even afteracivildivorcehadbeenobtained.Forthisreasonshewouldnot recogniseanynewmarriageasvalid beforeGod,whilebothpartiestothe firstmarriageremainedalive. ElementsofaMoralAct.
Ourprocedurewillbetosetdown ingeneralthedeterminantsofamoral Act,andthenapplythemtowar.In everymoralactthreeelementsmust beconsidered:First,theobject;second,theintention;andthird,thecircumstances.Notoneofthesemaybe contrarytothemoralorder,iftheact istobeconsideredmorallygood.To expressthisideaweoftenuseanold Latinmaxim:"Bonumexintegra causa,malumexquocumquedefectu"; thatis,allthemoraldeterminantsof anactmustbegood-itsobject,itsintention,anditscircumstances.If onlyoneofthemisnotgood,theact cannotclaimtobehollygood.

AllElementsMustBeGood.
Itcannotbetoooftenrepeatedthat allthreeelementsmustbegood-the actionitself,theintention,andthe circumstances.Anactmust,therefore,begoodnotonlyinitsendbut initsmeans.Thatiswhatthemodernpaganforgets.Hethinksthat becausetheendisgood,hecanuse anymeanshepleases.No!Theend neverjustifiesthemeans.And,incidentally,forthosewhohavebeendeceivedbylies,theJesuitsnevertaught anythingelsebutthistraditional Christiandoctrine.

TwoConsiderations.
Two'practicalconsiderationsfollow fromthisCatholictheologyofwar:
First,weChristiansshouldnever talkofwar,astheworlddoes,interms
TheChristian,inoppositiontothe spiritoftheworld,shouldthinkof warfirstandprimarilyintermsof justice.Wheneverthereisjustice thereisfreedom,butwhenthereisfreedom,thereisnotalwaysjustice.There canbefreedomwithoutjustice-and (hatisthebasicreasonwhythereis warto-day:menwantingtobefree fromdiscipline,andparticularlyfrom dependenceontheJusticeofGoi
ItisindeedinterestingthatOur Lordneverpraisedthosewhosought freedomapartfromjustice.Never didHesay:"Blessedaretheywho hungerandthirstafterfreedom,"but Blesedaretheywhohungerandthirst afterjustice"(Matt.v.,6),and"Blessedaretheythatsufferpersecutionfor justice'ssake,fortheirsisthekingdomofheaven"(Matt.v.,10).Let usthen,inthenameofGod,stoptalkingaboutfreedomuntilwedecidewhy wewanttobefree;letus,whenthe worldhasgonemadwithfreedom alienatedfromthelawofGod,unfurl theflagofjustice-thenweshallle free:"Seekyefirstthekingdomof GodandHisjusticeandallthese thingsshallbeaddeduntoyou"(Matt. vi.,33).
Secondly,sincetheGodofJusticeis theGodofCharity,itfollowsthatalthoughawarmaybejustified,onemay notenterintoitinaspiritofhate.We toooftenidentifywhatisreallyasin againstcharitywithaloveofjustice. Itispreciselyagainstthisdivorceof justiceandcharitythattheChurch cautionsus,evenintimesofwar.If youhavereadtheutterancesofthe HolyFatheryouwillnotehowlaceunto hisMasterheneverseparatesthecondemnationofinjusticefromtheplea forcharityandprayer-thehatredof enmityfromtheloveofenemy.Justicemaydemand,inhistory,physical resistancetoanaggressor'sphysics"!assault;butcharitydemandsthatwe prayforhisconversionfromhisonslaughtagainstthemoralityandjusticeofGod.
