INancientandmoderntimesmore thanhalfoftheGreekpopulation actuallylivedontheislands,the AegeanandIonianIslands,thePeloponnese,theIslandofPelops,which theCanalofCorinthmakesanisland.
ButeventheGreekmainlandcanbe regardedasanisland,asitisseparatedfromthenorthernpartoftheBalkanPeninsulabyhighmountains.ConsiderablepartsoftheGreekpopulation immigratedfromthesea,andduring allhistoricalperiods,Greektrafficand trade,notonlywithAsia,butalsowith Europe,wasmainlymaritime. GreeceandIrelandreachedahigh standardofcivilisationbeforethecentralandwest-Europeannationsawakenedtoculturalandpoliticallife.
WhileGreeceisthemotherlandofthe ancientcultureofMediterraneanEurope,Irelandisthemotherlandofthe medievalcultureofChristianwestern Europe.
Bothhighnationalcultureswere crushedbyinvaders,and,formany centuries,forcedintoforeignimperialisticsystems.Theyregainedvarying measuresofculturalandpoliticalfreedomonlyinthelasthundredyears, and,incidentally,between1916and 1922wasthelasttimebothcountries wereatwarwiththeoppressor.
Theyarenow-astheGermanscript isdyingout-theonlyEuropeancountriesthatwritetheirlanguage in nationalcharacters,differentfromthe LatinonesAtMercyofGreatPowers.
However,besidesthesesimilarities, therearestrikingdifferences.While Irelandfoughtforfreedomwithoutthe aidofanyEuropeannation,modern Greeceandherhistoryarealmostcompletelyaproductionofthejealousyof greatEuropeanPowers.
Fromtheoutset,Russia,England and,later,GermanyandItalyconsideredGreeceastheircreation,their protege,andtheirpuppet.
Onlysincetheendoftheeighteenth centuryhadtheEuropeanPowers realisedtheshamefulfactthatthe countryoftheancientheroesofspirituallifeinEurope,ofmuch-admired antiquity-wherethefirstChristiancongregationinEuropeoriginated,and oneofthemotherlandsoftheChurchcontinuedtobeunciarpaganrule.
In1774,RussiaobtainedaprotectorateovertheOrthodoxGreeksubjects intheTurkishEmpire.Atthesame time,thenationalspiritofGreecerevived,especiallybyCorea'screationof theAmodernwrittenlanguage.
IndependenceRegained.
Eventually,in1829,therepeatedattemptsatregainingindependencesucceeded,andGreecebecamerecognised asaprincipalityunderaChristian Prince,thoughstilltributarytothe Sultan.
PrinceLeopoldofSaxe-Coburgwas offeredthecrown,butherefused,preferringtotake,afewmonthslater,the crownofthenewly-createdBelgium.
TheGovernmentofanabsolutist GermanPrinceofBavariafailed,and GreecebecameaRepublic,untilGeorge 1,arelativeoftheDanishking,was electedKingofGreecein1863,arida mostliberalconstitutionwasintroduced. Inthesameyear,Greeceregainedan essentialpartofhernationalterritory, namely,theIonianIslands,which,since 1815,hadbeenunderBritishrule.
TwentyyearslaterthegreatEuropean Powersconcededheranothershareof thegraduallydismemberedbodyofthe OttomanEmpireonthemainland. whichGreecebyherselfenlargedasa resultoftheBalkanwarsandofthe lastGreatWar.
I3ytheseacquisitions,Greecealmost doubledherextentandherpopulation.

EconomicDifficulties.
OnaccountofhisGermansympathies,theGreekKingtriedtokeep GreecenutoftheWorldWar,butpublicopinion,ledbyGreece'sgreatand adventurousstatesman,Venizelos,on theonehand,andtheforceoftheEntentePowersontheother,superseded him.
AttheendofthewarKingConstantinewascalledbackbythenation, butinconsequenceEnglandand FrancewithdrewtheireconomicassistancefromGreeceandmodifiedin herdisfavourthePeaceTreatywith Turkey.
Thewarof1922-1923,undertakento deliveronemillionGreeksinAsia MinorfromTurkishbondage,waslost andwasfollowedbyeconomicdisaster.
lAsGreececouldnolongerreceive foreignloans,sherevengedherselfupon internationalfinanceinauniquemannerbycuttingallbanknotesinhalf, proclaimingthateachhalfhadtwothirdsofthevalueofthewholenote, thusprocuringherselfaforcedloan.
Theeconomicdisasterwasfollowed byaseriousinternalcrisis.KingConstantinewasforcedtoleavethecountry forasecondtime,andhisson(the presentKingGeorge)beganhisGovernmentbytheexecutionofsixformer Ministers.

PopulationProblems.
Besidesthis,however,Greeceisone ofthefewEuropeancountrieswhere theinterventionoftheLeagueofNationsyieldedgoodresults.
BetweenBulgariaandTurkeyonthe onesideandGreeceontheother,the SettlementCommissionoftheLeave ofNationscarriedoutthegreatestexchangeofpopulationsinuniversalhistory.
Theideathathomogenityofpopulationwithinfixednationalboundaries isasafeprotectivemeasureagainst warhasbeenrecentlyadoptedalsoby Germany,ItalyandRussia.Thesettlementofoveramillionrefugees,especiallyinNorthernGreece,becamethe mainproblemduringthelast15years.
Greece'spopulationisnowabout sevenmillions,whichisfairlydense whenthefactisconsideredthatagreat partofthewholeterritoryof50,000 squaremilesisunsuitableforcultivation.

InvirtueoftheGraeco-TurkishConvention,Turkeyeventriedtoexpelthe OrthodoxPatriarchofConstantinople asanundesirablealien.
Sincethefourthcentury,Greecehad beenunderthejurisdictionofthePatriarchofConstantinople,and,asaresult,wasdrawnintotheGreatSchism.
Duringthelastthreecenturiesmany unsuccessfulattemptsatreconcilingher withRomeweremade.In1833,Greece waswithdrawnfromthejurisdictionof theVicarPatriarchincommunion withtheHolySee,and,atthesame time,thehierarchyforallCatholics, wasre-established.Also,duringthe nineteenthcentury,theArchbishoprics ofAthens,Corfu,andNaxoswerereerected.Forthenorthernpartof GreecetheApostolicVicariateofSalonika(St.Paul'sThessalonika)andfor theUniatesoftheGreekRite,ApostolicAdministrationsinAthensand Macedoniawereestablished.
