Inanswertothefirstquestionvanousexplanationshavebeenoffered,of whichthemostsatisfactoryseemsto bethatthesininquestionisnotblasphemyascommonlyunderstood,but blasphemywhichconsistsinobstinate resistancetotheverygraceoftheHoly Spiritwhichisgiventousforoursalvation.Themanwhosinsagainstthe lightbycontumaciouslyrejectingthe verymeansofferedbyGodforhisconversionandsalvation,isnotthesort ofmanwhowillacceptothergracesofferedbyGodandrepentofhisevildoing.ThusthePhariseeswhowitnessedthemiraclesofOurLordcould notdenythemtobemiracles;yet ratherthanacceptthegracethusofferedthem,theyendeavouredtoexplain awayHismiraclesbyattributingthem tothedevil.Thereforetheyheard fromOurLordtheterribleprophecy: "Youshalldieinyoursins."Their dispositionsweresuchthattheywould neverrepent.Forthisreason,other scholarshavemaintainedthatthesin meansthesinoffinalimpenitence;the sinwhichamancommitsbydyingunrepentantinsin.

Theanswertothesecondquestion whythesinisunforgivableshouldnow beclear.Itisunforgivable,notofits nature,butbecausetheonewhois guiltyofitwillnotfulfiltheconditions necessaryforpardon.Themanwho issohardenedinvicethathesins againstthelightisnotlikelytorepent;andwithoutsincererepentance therecanbenoforgiveness.Similarly, themanwhodiesimpenitentinsin, cannotbeforgiven,notbecauseinitselfhissinisincapableofpardon,but becausedeathendstheperiodofprobation,anddeathinsinseparateshim eternallyfromthemeansofpardon.

CanItBeForgiven?

CouldthesinagainsttheHolyGhost beforgiveninConfession?

Yesandno.Consideredsimplyas asin,itcouldbeforgiveninconfession;forthereisnosinsoseriousin naturethatitisexcludedfromthe Powerofthe ButtheSacrament ofPenanceis lesswithoutsincere sorrowforsinmmitted;andwould thereforebequiteuselesstotheman whoremainshardenedinsin.Similarly,themanwhodiesimpenitentin sinplaceshimselfbeyondthereachof theSacramentofPenance. IfamanwantedtogotoConfession butdiedbeforehewasabletoget there,wouldhissinsbeheldagainst himbecauseofhisinabilitytogoto confession?

No.InthecaseyougiveitisobviousthatthemaninquestionsincerelywishedtoreceivetheSacramentof Penance.Sincehewasunabletodo so,Godwillforgivehiminvirtueofhis willtofulfilalltheconditionslaid downbyGodinordertoobtainpar don,bygivinghimthegracenecessary tomakeanactofperfectsorrow.

TheBaptismofConverts.

IhaveseenconvertsreceivetheSacramentofBaptismandthengotoConfessionafewminutesafterwards.

Thepracticeisnotanunusualone. Howcouldsuchaonebeguiltyofsin inthefewminutesbetweenBaptism andConfession?

Itisnotamatterofanysincommittedinthatbriefperiod;for,althoughsinispossibleeveninsucha shorttime,itisnotatalllikely.The explanationistobefoundinthefact thattheBaptismtowhichyourefer isBaptismrdministeredconditionally toapersonwhohasalreadybeenbaptisedasaProtestant.Whenthereis theleastshadowofdoubtaboutthe validityofthefirstBaptism,theSac-

ramentisagainadministered,this timeconditionally,theconditionsbeing thevalidityorotherwiseofthefirst Baptism.IfthefirstBaptismwas valid,theseconddoesnottakeeffect inthesoulofthepersonconcerned. Themanremainsashewas,withthe sinscommittedafterBaptismprobably stillonhissoul.If,however,thefirst Baptismwasinvalid,thesecondcleansesthesoulfromallsin.Thereason whytheChurchinsistsonthere-baptismofconvertsistobefoundinthe absolutenecessityoftheSacrament.

ThesameappliestotheSacrament ofPenancereceivedbyamanwhohas justbeenbaptisedconditionally.If hisfirstBaptismwasvalidandthe second,therefore,withouteffect,his sinsareforgiventhroughtheSacramentofPenance.If,however,his secondBaptismwashisfirstrealBaptismandallhissinsuptothatmoment werethusdeleted,theSacramentof Penancewouldnottakeeffectbecause, byDivineinstitution,itforgivesonly thosesinswhicharecommittedafter Baptism.

Ineithercase,then,theconvertis enabledtobeginlifeasaCatholicfree fromsin.

"Absolution"oftheDead.

Whatisthemeaningoftheabsolution giventothedead?

Strictlyspeaking,thereisnosuch thingasabsolutiongiventothederad.

Ifwetakeabsolutioninthesacramentalsense,aspartoftheSacramentof Penance,itisobviousthattheperson tobeabsolvedmuststillbealiving subjectoftheChurchinthisworld. Attimes,however,youmayhearofthe "lastabsolution"beinggivenataRequiemMass;thesaid"absolution" beingpronouncedoverthebodylying beforetheAltar.Buttheword"absolution"asusedinthisconnection,is nottobeunderstoodinthestrict sense,asifithadsacramentalpower. Itisnotthesacramentalsentenceof pardonwhichitisintheSacramentof Penance.Itisratheraliturgical prayerforthereposeofthesoulof thedepartedperson;*a.prayerwhich wouldbeofnoavailtothepersonconcerned,didhedieinastateofmortal sin.

WhoisJudgeRutherford?

HeisthesuccessorofPastorRussellastheleaderofthefreakAmericansectnowknownasthe'Witnesses ofJehovah."PastorRusselldiedin 1916,andMr.JosephRutherford,one oftheeditorialcommitteeofRussell's paper,"Zion'sWatchTower,"secured controlofthemovement.

Ishearealjudge? No.Hehasnorealtitletocall himselfajudgeatall.HewasoriginallyacourtreporteratBoonville, CooperCounty,Missouri,U.S.A.Familiarwithcourtprocedure,butwithout anyformaltraininginlaw,hemanagedin1892togetalicensetopracticeasalawyerintheStateofMissouri.FourtimesinCooperCounty histurnasalocallawyercametopresideoverthelocalcourtintheabsence oftheregularjudge.Oneachoccasion,hepresidedforonedayonly. Theotherlocallawyersalsotooktheir turnonotheroccasionsand,ifMr. Rutherfordisthusentitledtoclaimto beajudge,theneveryotherlawyerin theStatewhohadpresidedovera courtintheabsenceoftheregular judge,isentitledtocallhimselfa judge.Butalltheotherlawyersrepudiatesuchanidea:andso"Judge" Rutherford,neverofficiallyappointed tosuchapositioninhislife,ismasqueradingunderatitletowhichhehas norealclaimatall. WhatisthegistofRutherford'steaching?Icannotmakeheadortailof it. Thatyoucannotmakeheadortail ofitisnotsurprising,foritlacksboth, andbodyaswell.Butthegistofhis teachingisthis:Allcivilgovernments, allchurchesandallreligions,allpoliticalandcommercialpowers,organised beforetheadventofthecommercialisedpseudo-religiousracketof"Judge" Rutherford,aretheworkofSatan,And anydaynow,andsosoonthat"Millionsnowlivingwillneverdie,"God isgoingtosmiteallwhodonotaccept the"Judge"astheirinfallibleguide andteacher.

Whenyouhaveansweredthosetwo questions,yourremarkwillbeworthy ofconsideration.

Itisadivinelyrevealedtruththat prayerisalwaysansweredintheway thatisbestconducivetoourgood.

Butismustberealprayer,madewith theproperdispositionsoffaith,humility,confidenceandperseverance.If anyofthesequalitiesarelackingin prayer,itisnotgenuineprayer,buta sorryandineffectivesubstitute.

Thecheapgibeatdaysofprayerand intercessionas"religiousballyhoo"may bedismissedasunworthyofserious comment,

IfyourGodissointerestedinChristianity,whydoesn'thestepinand rescueitfromtheNazis?

ChristOurLordpromisedthatthe powersofevilwouldnotprevailagainst HisChurch.lieisGodandwillcontinuetokeepHispromise,asHehas keptitduringthetwothousandyears oftheChurch'shistory.Hewillkeep HispromiseinHisownway,andin Ilisowntime;andwillnotbeguided inthewaysofHisProvidencebythe sneersoffreethinkers.

GodwillsaveHisChurch.But whyshouldHesaveacorruptanddegeneratecivilisationwhichhasscornfullyrepudiatedChristianityintheory andflouteditinpractice?NVhyshould Heheartheprayersofpeoplewho,as ArchbishopNfannixremarkedinarecentaddress,didnotrealisetheywere Christiansuntilthewarbrokeout: whonowpayHimlip-serviceintimeof danger,butcontinueindispositionand inacttolivelikethecattlethatperish?

WarisatoncetheresultandthJ punishmentofsin;ofthesinsofin--, dividualsandofthesinsofnations.i. ThetotalitarianStateisnecessarily anti-religious.Itmustbeifitisto survive,foritcanneverpossessthe wholemanuntilithasdispossessedthe Church;whichsaysthatthewhole mandoesnotbelongtotheState. Totalitarianismiswrong,notbecause ithasadictator,butbecausethedictatordictateseventothesoulofman bymakingthehumanpersonameans toanend,manamereeconomicaspectoftheState.oradropofbloodin thebodypolitic,oramachineina Statefactory.TheChurchinsistson herrighttothesoulofman,andthat iswhysheispersecuted.Thatiswhy sheiscalled"re-actionarv,"inMexico

"anti-revolutionary,"inRussia;"poli- tical"in tionary"Germany,"counter-revoluinBarcelona.Thatisthe climaxofthegreathistoricalprocess of"crossingouttheCross,"Forwhen CaesarbelieveshimselftobeGod,he willalwaystrytocrucifyChrist.YettheverypeoplewhohaveexcludedGodandChristianityfromthe socialandnationallifeofEuropeand havetherebyledusfromdisasterto worsedisaster,havetheeffronterytoblameChristandChristianityfortheir failure.Butwhatwewitnessto-day isnotthewreckoftheKingdomof God;itisthewreckoftheKingdom ofgodlessman-oftheTowerofBabel builtbythefoolswhothoughtthey couldruletheworldtotheexclusion ofGod.

TheenslavementofmaninRussia, Germany,Mexico,and,toaconsiderableextent,inItaly,wheremanhasno rightsexceptthosewhichtheState grants,becomesallthemorestrikingbecauseitcomesatatimewhenman seemstohaveeverythingwhichshould makeforsuccessfulliving.

Neverbeforehasmanhadsomuch power;yetneverbeforehasthat powerbeensoamassedforbloodshed anddestruction.Neverbeforehas therebeensomucheducation,and neverbeforesolitleknowledgeofthe Truth.Neverbeforehastherebeen somuchpoverty;neverbeforedidwe havesomuchfood,andneverbefore didsomanymengohungry.Manis surroundedbyconveniencesandluxuriesofwhichpreviousgenerationshad neverdreamed,yethewasneverso frustrated,neversomiserable,never souncertainofthefuture.Hehas everything,yethehasnothing,becausehehasforgottenonesupremely importantthing-hisownworth,his ownintrinsicvalue,hisownhighdestiny.Havinglostthat,itiseasy.or dictatorstothinkthathehasnovalue atalltobelievethatheisonlyadrop ofbloodintheblood-streamofthe race,anothersoldierinanarmy, anothercogintheGreatProletarian Machine.

Manneedstobere-discovered,not theanimalmanofwh thenewspaperstellussomuch,outtherational manofwhomweknowsolittle.That discoveryisimpossiblewithoutthe knowledgeofHimtowhoseimageand 'ikenessin..nwasmade,foronlywhen Godisrecognisedandworshipped doesmanbegintobefree.

0Frecentweekswehaveallseentwoabsorbinglyinteresting films,"LondonCanTakeIt"and'BritainatBay,"bothdistri- butedbytheBritishMinistryofInformation.Perhapsthe impressionmostdeeplystampedonthenormalpersonbythesefirsthandfilmsisoneofextremehorrorandloathingforthecrimewe knowasmodernwar.Forwhateverromanticmemoriesofbattles longagomayhavesurvivedtherecklessslaughterof1914-18have beenefficiently"moppedup"bythebombingaeroplane.Theglamourofmanlycombathasburstwiththehigh-explosiveshell,and wenowseewarinitselementalfrightfulness-theviolentdeathof man,womanandchildatthehandofafellowman.

Itissenselesstoglorifywar,assome havedone;tospeakofitasascience (someregardittheapotheosisofthe sciences)issomethinglikecataloguing murderasoneofthefinearts.But unlesswearetotakerefugeinthe pacifisttheory-whichcommonsense tellsusisbutanescapistdodgethat justwon'twork-wemustfindsome justificationforplayingourpartinthe presentworldstruggle.

ThegenuineChristianpacifist,who objectstoallwarunderallcircumstancesonreligiousgrounds,asopposedto thenaturallawandstillmorethe Christianlawofcharity,isveryrare indeed.Thoughinerror,weholdhim inrespect,forinhisdistortedandexaggeratedfashionhehasgotholdofa truth.Hismistakearisesoutofhis verydevotion;heregardsitasifit werethewholetruth.Perhapshe playsausefulpartistheschemeof things,acontinualremindertohisfellowmenthatpeaceistheend,warbut themeans.

Theaspidistrapacifist,however, baseshissmalltalkonflimsygrounds suchasappealtothoseincapableof deepconviction.Heitiswhoisthe realmenacetoalegitimate100per centwareffort.Whenthefanatic idealisthasbeenshownwrong,itwill notbedifficulttouproottheclichesof thesentimentalist **

"Wehavesympathywiththepacifists,buttheyarewrong,"declareda speakerfromRadioVaticaninarecent broadcasttoAmericaontheChristian attitudetowardsmilitaryservice."No wordintheGospelorinPapalteachingsuggeststhatjusticeshouldgoundefended,orthatitisnotworthdying for.Conscientiousobjectorscanbe respectedfortheiropinions,buttheir errordoesnotexcusethemfromthe responsibilitiesofpatriotism.The Churchisnoconscientiousobjector. Actuallyfrombeginningtoendof theNewTestamentthereisnotthe slightestevidencethatChristorHis Apostlesregardedmilitaryserviceas incompatiblewiththefollowingof Him.OurLord'srelationswiththe centurionatCapharnaum,andthe conversionofthecenturionCornelius andhisfamilyatCaesareabySt.Peter, suggestindeedjusttheopposite,that theyregardedthearmyasanintegral partoftheStateandthereforemilitary serviceascompatiblewiththelifeof aChristian.

WhatChristmeantwhenHebade usturntheothercheek,eachman knows.ButChristHimselfrosein Hisanger,andfashionedascourgeto punishthebuyersandsellers,whom yetHelovedandforwhomHewasto die.

Todrivehomeanunfamiliartruth itisoftennecessarytoexaggerate;to drawattentiontoafactwetaketoo muchforgranteditisusefulsometimes touselanguagethatwillstartle.Chestertonmadethisthebasisofmuchof hisliterarytechnique,andwhereas manyofhisparadoxesarefoolishness totheunitiated,whenunderstoodin theircontexttheyserveasabeaconof light.So,too,Jesusfoundithelpful toemphasiseinHisteachingnowthis aspectandnowthat,butinquoting anyparticularpointtradewemustriot divorceitfromHisdoctrineasa whole,elseweareleftwithameaninglessseriesofcontradictions.

SAINTHennaswasasoldierin theRomanarmy,andhisname hasalwaysbeenfamousinthe calendarsoftheEasternChurch.He sufferedmartyrdomundertheedicts ofDiocletianabouttheyear304.The saintenduredhavinghiseyesputout ratherthandenyhisfaith:andbefore hisdeathhishandswerecutoff.Yet, underallhissufferings,heborehimselfmeekly.ancir.nobly,andsoanpressedthejudgewhocondemnedhim totheblockthathebecameaconvert tothetruefaith,andwasinturnbeheaded.Thisdoublemartyrdomtook placeinatownnamedCotyaeus.

SaintDidymus,ayouthfulsoldierof theRomanarmyinAlexandria,rescuedayoungChristianmaidenfrom deathbyeffectingherescapefromprison.ThesoldierwasaChristian,also, andwhenaccusedofasistingTheodora togetfree,headmittedthathewas herco-religionist.Hewassentenced tobebeheaded;andjustasthesword wasabouttofall,Theodorarushedtorward,pleadingtobeputtodeathin hisstead.Didymusrefusedtoyield hisplace;butthecontestbetweenthe twowasspeedilycutshortbytheauthorities.Bothwerebeheadedand theirbodiesburned.Theirmartyrdom tookplaceintheyear304.

Therearetwosoldiersaintsbearing thenameofTheodore.One,whowas ageneralundertheRomanEmperor Licinius,brokeanumberofgoldand silveridols.Hisranksavedhimfrom torture,buthewasbeheadedonthe 7th.ofFebruary,319.TheotherSaint TheodorewasanativeofSyria,who boldlyprofessedChristianity.After sufferingmanytortures,hewasthrown intoafieryfurnace.

Historybegantothe soundofbattleandit isforetoldthatasupremeconflictbetween theforcesofthegood andevilwillprecede theend.Themightieststruggleofalltime wasthatinwhichthe ArchangelMichaeloverthrewtherebellious Satanandhisfollowers. Christianwarriorshave alwayscalledonhis namewithconfidence.

ButapartfromtherareChristian pacifistwhorejectsallresorttoforce ontheprincipleofcharity,wehavea numberofplausibleargumentsraised bythosewithalessexaltedoutlook. Attheotherextremefromthedoctrine that"MightisRight"istheconception thatmereacquiescenceintherightis allsufficient.Itisbutanothermanifestationofthedisintegrationwrought bythespiritofProtestantism,whereby theperfectlybalanceddoctrineofthe CatholicChurchisbrokenupintorival heresies,whichembraceeitheraspect ofthewholetruthtotheexclusionof theother.Thecommonsense.relation ofgoodworkstofaithisexactlyparalleltodefenceofajustcause.

Thosewhohelptoperpetuatethereign ofinjusticeandoppression,througha sentimentalrefusaltodefendthemselvesortheircountry,willsurelybeara graveresponsibility.

"BloodyTraffic."

Therearenotafewwhoseeinwar nothingbutaracket,launchedby armamentfirms,andtherosydawnfor theprofiteer.Thistypeofmindcan: seenothinginTestcricketbutgatere-. ceipts,andnothinginreligionbeyond! thecollectionplate.Thediseased: financialsystemweboastiscertainly responsibleforsomeparticularlygrave abuses,butonlyapermanentlywarpedmentalitytranslatesallhumanendeavourintomonetaryterms.More oftenthannotthecynicalscofferisno; trueseekerofreform,butamere chronicsowerofdissension.Itwould' behardtodemonstratethattheracket-huntingWitnessesofJehovahwere inspiredbyfraternalcharityandmutualforbearance.

ThomasCarlylewasnotlackingin genuinefellow-feeling,buthedidhelp topropagatethesentimentalconvictionthatofitsnaturerightmusttriumpheveninthetemporalaffairsof men.Thisextremeoptimismishardlycompatiblewithhistoryandthe everydaylifeweallknow,andthe orthodoxChristiandoesnotbasehis hopeonthesuccessesofthislife.IndeedheisratherburdenedwithatraditionthatEvilwilloncemorebe paramount,withAnti-ChristLordof theworld.

Butmeanwhiletheforcesofevil mustbecombatedwithalltheresourcesofbodyandsoul,ratherthan begivenafreehandonthepleathat allwillbewellattheend.Thebattlegroundisindeedthehumanwill-but notdivorcedfromthehumanbody.It isstupidtosuggestthatideascannot beinfluencedanddestroyedbyphysicalforce,asthoughtheyhadsomereal entityoftheirown.

Neverthelessresorttoviolenceisitselfdegrading,andthedestructiveef-

Thecoursethenisover,butitisnot easytoestimateitsresults-therehave beennoexaminationstoprovethe abilitiesofthe"pioneers."Yetwe c:nsafelysaythatfortyapostleshave goneouteagertofulfilGod'splanfor eachoneofthemselves,tobringnew beautyandjoyintothelivesofothers, andtospreadthatspiritofFaithand generositywhichalonecansavethe worldandwinitbackforGod.

TheQuestwasfollowedalmostimmediatelybyatendays'Christmas Course,duringwhicthfiftygirlscame togetheratTayCreggantodiscover allthewealthofbeautycontainedin theChristmasseason.Abouthalfof thesegirlswereQuesters,sothatthe Quest,oursearchfor"thefullCatholiclife,"seemedtobeculminatingnaturallyinafamilycelebrationcrowned withtherichness,thejoyand,deep peaceofalifeinunionwiththe Church.

EverydayoftheCoursewasaspecialday-onefortheProphets,the Angels,theShepherds,theKings,the StarofBethlehem-symbolsofHope andaguidingFaith-forSt.Joseph andOurLady,whileallleadupto Christ'sDay,when,unitedwiththeCatholicsofallcountriesandallages,we gatheredroundtheCrib.Wedreamedofafutureinwhichfamilies throughoutthewholeofAustraliaand NewZeaalndwouldbeunitedaswe wereonChristmasDay,inonesame spiritofgratitudeandlove.Weplanned,too,tomakeofthefollowingday arealFamilyDay(whatmeaningcan BoxingDayhaveforus?),whenthese samefamiliesshouldcometogetherin largergroupstocelebrateChristmasin acommunitywayandtoestablish amongthemselvesthestrongbondofa livingCatholicismandadeeplyCatholicnationalculture.

TheachievementofoursoldiersatBardiahasbroughtastrong glowofprideandsatisfactiontotheheartofeveryAustralian.Once againmenoftheA.I.F.havemadethenameofAustraliasound throughouttheworld.Theyareourrepresentatives,andwefeel sharersintheirglory.Butmere"barracking"asonlookershardly entitlesustoshareinthatfeeling.Thesemenofferedandrisked theirlives,andsome-wedevoutlyhopenotmany-werecalledon topaytheprice.Letitneverbesaidthattheirsacrificewasmade invain.Theyhavewillinglygiventheirto-dayforourto-morrow, butonsacredtrust-thatthatto-morrowwillseeappliedtheprinciplestheyhavegivenalltopreserve.Forinallhumilitywemust confessthatevenhereinthislandofpromisewehaveasyetdone verylittletoadvancethereignofjusticeandcharityinthelifeof thecommunity.Australiansoldiershaveshownwhatcourage anddeterminationcanaccomplishinthefaceofformidablematerial barriers;itbecomesAustraliancitizenstoapplythesequalitiesto theordering,notonlyoftheirwareffort,butoftheirwayofliving, thepotentialitiesofwhichtheyhaveenteredintoadeathstruggle tomaintain.

Thepresentseriousindustrialunrest-therearealmostadozen .stoppagesinimportantindustries-isbutone,butareliableindi cationofthesorrystateofournationaloutlook.ItisquiteridiculoustoputthewholebusinessdowntoRedinfluenceandenemy propaganda,thoughthismeaninsinuationisreadilyacceptableto thecredulous.Suchaninterpretationshowsacompletelackof .sympathywiththegrievousproblemsfacingtheAustralianworkingclasses,thatisthevastmajorityoffellowAustralians.I'rices aresoaringdespitetheblandestassurances,taxeshavesky-rocketed andbeenmadetoembracethelowerincomes,whilewagesare beingrigorouslybatteneddown.Yetwecanreadinthedaily pressthat"profitsannouncedin1940by685companiesengagedin allclassesofAustralianindustrywiththeexceptionofmining,aggregated£30,033,101,comparedwith£28,934,399in1939-ariseof £1,098,702."Suchananomalydoesandhascausedagooddealof unfavourablecomment,andneedsalotofexplaining.National unityisvitalatthemoment,butitcannotheboughtatthepriceof injustice,anymorethaninternationalpeace.Arealequalityof sacrificeisdemanded,notonethatpressesunfairlyontheworking people,whoarealreadyfindingitdifficulttoprovideforthenext generation.Itisthesepeoplewhohaveforestalledtheconscriptionofman-powerbyofferingtheirservicesfreely.Istheconscriptionofwealthtobeshelvedonaccountoftheirverygenerosity?ItishightimetheAustralianpeoplewentintoactiononthe .homefront.

"Wehavecomefacetofaceto-day withafactoffundamentalimportance,-saidHisHoliness."Thegeneralopinionaboutthepassionatestruggleofbothsides,aboutaimsofwar andpeace,isthatallEurope,aswell asthenations,isintheprocessofsuch atransformationthatthebeginningof anewperiodisclearlyrecognised.Europeandthepoliticalorderofhernations,itisemphasised,willceasetobe whattheyhavebeenuntilnow.There willhesomethingnewer,something better,somethingmoredeveloped, morehealthyorganically,freer,stronger,thaninthepast.Allweaknesses revealedinthelightofrecentevents isillbecastout.

"Itistruethatopinionsanddifferentaimsvary,andyettheyagreein thedesiretoestablishaneworder,and inthebeliefthatthereturntotheold orderisneitherpossiblenordesirable. Thisdesireforrenewalisnotdictated bythe'rerumnovarumcupido,'but bytherealisationofthedeficiencies whichareprevalentto-day,andby thefirmdeterminationtoestablisha newandjustnationalorder,andaninternationalorderwhichgivessecurity.

"Nobodycanbesurprisedthatthis desireshouldbespeciallystrongin thelayersofsocietywhichlivebythe workoftheirhands,andwhichare condemnedtoundergosufferingasa resultofnationalandinternational troubles,morethananyoneelse.Still lessmayitbeignoredbytheChurch, which,asthecommonMotherofeveryone,musthearandunderstandthe criesofsufferinghumanity.Insuch astruggleofopinions,theChurchcannotbesolicitedtohearonesidemore thananother;letushopethatHumanity,andeachnation,willcomeout ofthepresenttribulationsmoremature,withaspiritopenedtorealities, andtrulydeterminedtosatisfythe exigenciesoflifeandjustice,notonly sothatthedemandsofoneshouldbe heard,butsothatthereasonable claimsofothersshouldlikewisebe heard.

"Itisonlyinsuchaspiritualstate thatthetemptingsloganoftheNew Ordercanbecomeabeautiful,dignified,andlastingconceptionbasedon moralprinciples.Itisthenonlythat thesloganmaynotbeindangerof beinginterpretedasadestructivemechanismofliberty,imposedbyviolence,withouttheconsentofsincerity, joy,dignityorhonour-aninstrument fortheoppressionofsouls.Itisthen onlythatHumanitymayhavenew hopeinanaimwhichcorrespondsto nobleeffort."

ThePopeaddedthatthenecessary conditionsfortheneworderwerethe followingfivepoints:Victoryover hatred:overdistrustininternational co-operation;overtheprinciplethat utilityisthefoundationofright,and thatforcecreatesright;overeconomic unbalance;andoveregoism.

(1)Victoryoverhatredwhichdividesnations,bythedisappearance ofsystems,andactswhichcreate hatred.HisHolinesspleadsfor this,andclaimsthatitwillhelpthe futureco-operationofnations,and safeguardthisco-operationbythe keepingofthenaturalidealsoftrue charityandjustice.

(2)Victoryoverdistrustwhichex ercisesaparalysingpressureover

internationalright,andmakesall honestunderstandingimpossible. Theremustbeareturntotheprinciplesofmutualconfidence,toloyaltytotreatieswithoutwhichthe sureco-operationofnations,and aboveall,life,sidebyside,ofthe strongandtheweak,isinconceivable.Thefoundationofjusticeis loyalty,thepossibilityofbelieving, andtrustingtothegivenword.

(31Victoryoverthedeplorable principlethatutilityisthefoundationandaimofright,andthatforce createsright.Thisprinciplecan donothingbutoverthrowinternationalrelations,andisnotacceptabletosmallnations.Therefore, theremustbeareturntohonest, seriousandmoralrelationsinthe domainofinternationalaffairs.Such aconceptiondoesnotexcludethe desireforhonourableameliorationof existingconditions,northerightto defendoneselfifpeacefullifeisattacked,northereparationfordamagesundergoneasaconsequence.

(41Victoryoverpotentialconflictscausedbytheeconomicunbalanceoftheworld.Thereforethe neweconomicordermustbegraduallyestablished,givingallnations themeansofassuringtotheircitizensanappropriatestandardoflife.

(5)Victoryoverthecoldegoism whichreliesonitsownpowerto bringsovereignhonourtonations, violatinglegitimate,just,andordainedlibertyofindividuals.This egoismmustbereplacedbyareal, Christiansolidarityofajudicious andeconomiccharacter,andbythe brotherlyco-operationofthenations whosesovereigntyhasbeendulyassured.

"Thewar,"thePopeconcluded,"is proceedingonitsbloodyway,piling

heapsofruinsandnotevensparing themonumentsoftheChurch.One daythechronicleofmutilatedbodies andsuppressed,starvingandexpelled peopleswillbemadeknowninitsfull content.To-day,itisnotevenpart lyknown,butwhatweknowissufficienttotearourhearts."

Mr.YakichiroSuma,spokesmanfor theJapaneseGovernmentinthesphere ofinternationalrelations,informed meinaspecialinterviewthatupt.C41 thepresenttherehasbeennoattempt toeliminateforeign-bornmembersof theHierarchyinJapan,noristhere anydiscernibleinclinationinofficial circlestotakesuchastep.

Mr.Sumasaidthatinthestateof contemporaneousworldaffairsanythingislikelytohappen,butthatthe respectandesteeminwhichtheCatholicBishopsandpriests,foreignaswell asJapaneseareheldmakesitextremelyunlikelythatgovernmentalpolicy willrequirethewithdrawalofanyof them.

TwoofJapan'seightBishopsare Japanese.OneisMgr.Tatsuo,ArchbishopofTokyo,theotherMgr.Yamaguchi,BishopofNagasaki.Mgr. Tatsuawasconsecratedin1937byhis Frenchpredecessor,Mgr.Chambon, whothereuponbecameBishopofYokohama,retainingthepersonaltitleof Archbishop.Mgr.YamaguchisucceededthefirstJapaneseBishop,Mgr. Hayasaka,whowasconsecratedby PopePiusXI.

TheotherBishopsareMgr.Castanier (Osaka)andMgr.Breton'(Fukuoka), bothmembersoftheParisSocietyof ForeignMissions,Mgr.Lemieux(Sendai),aCanadian,Mgr.Ross(Vicar ApostolicofHiroshima),aGerman Jesuit,andMgr.Kinold(VicarApostolicofSapporo),aGermanFranciscan.
