Then the Qrdinand is instructed as to the duties of his new office. Next, the candidate prostrates himself before the Altar and the Archbishop and clergy. kneeling, recite the Litany of the Saint,.

lowed. all holding tip the right hand while the Archbishop prayed GOd for a blessing on the candidate. After the Preface the stole and the chasuble, folded behind, is bestowed with appropriate formulae. Then the - Veni Creator" is sung and during it the Archbishop anointed the hands of the candidate with the oil of catechumens. The hands are tied with white linen, the chalice with paten and host is presented to the Ordinand. who touches them. The Bishop then confers the tremendous power to offer sacrifice.

O

NE of the most ancient and beautiful rites of the Church was witnessed in St. Mary's Cathedral on Sunday last, when His Grace the Archbishop conferred the Sacrament of Holy Orders on Rev. Michael T homas McCaul at 11 o'clock Mass.

Rev. J. Cameron. of the New Norcia Diocese, will be ordained in St. Patrick's Cathedral. Melbourne, on Sunday next.

The priesthood is the last of the seven .steps that lead to the A ltar. and is the one Sacrament not received in one act. The gradual approach to Ordination ensures due preparation and sufficient knowledge. Iy this Sacrament grace and spiritual power for the discharge of ecclesiastic offices are conferred. The ceremony commences with the Archbishop questioning the Archdeacon I Rt. Rev. Monsignor Fagan. V.( .) as to the fitness of the Ordinand for the priestly office.
