Budapest Eucharistic Congress THE'

Congress opened at Budapest on Ascension One hunmorningdred thousand children packed before the Congress Altar in the Heroes' Square. A thousand white doves flew to the four winds as Cardinal V erdier prodeeded to celebrate the Mass. Three hundred priests brought Holy Communion to the children and to the 60,000 adults kneeling in the Square. In the morning, priests of all nations celebrated Mass for the intentions of the Congress. In the afternoon the first of theinternational meetings was held. In the dusk of Ascension Day the city became a fairyland of light. It was the night of the great procession upon the river. Cascades of fire lit up the hills if B udapest, and the boom of cannon echoed through the valley as, slowly and majestically, the ships floated on the stream to the hymns of praise to Our Lord f rom 500,000 people on the banks. On Friday, soldiers and ex-service men from all parts of the w orld joined Hungarian soldiers and veterans in the great Square at the soldiers' Mass for Peace. Cardinal Gerlier--a hero of the war—was the celebrant. At midnight was the Mass for men. Cardinal Goma, of Spain, w as the celebrant. Once again the thousands flocked into the Heroes' Square before the flo lit. altar, with its red and odgold brilliant in the light.
