Sister Celebrates Golden Jubilee
O
April 8, 1878, the Convent of St. Joseph O f the Apparition was N founded at Albany. In its 60 years the convent has figured prominently in the religious life of the corn.munit:. and in charitable movement.. . Its imposing building is in Ab.- r,icen-street, on the northern en ,i of the town. The Sunerioress of St. Joseph's Convent in Fremantle (Rev. Mother Teresa McKenzie) left that city on April 1, 1878, for Albany, her journey by the then old mail coach service occupying eight days. She was accompanied by Sister Josephine Smith, Sister Mary Donovan. and a secular teacher. A warm welcome was accorded the parts' on arrival, a number of residents escorting its members to their new home, a small cottage rented for this purpose by the then priest of the parish, Rev. Father Mateu, a Spanish priest, who had arrived four years earlier. He built the present Church of St. Joseph. Before the arrival in Albany of Father Caubb, between 1850 and 1852, the Catholic community received periodical visits from various priests. Father Caubb built the old chapel, a quaint looking, low set building ,with a dark shingled roof and two arched window's at one side. It
stood north and south, the altar facing Norfolk-street, and was built beside a tall granite outcrop which stands to-day opposite the present church. Father Caubb had a small room at the end where he lived at41.kept hi 4 medicines, for he was a good chemist and attended to the ailmcnts of his charges After the arrival of Father Mater!, the old churcii was converted into an alms house and finally demolished. Nearly opposite the chapel stood a small, high pitch roofed cottage. which was about the last thatched home to be erected in Albany. The Sisters from Fremantle occupied their new home for a few months only. Finding it too small they moved to a large/ house on what is now Serpentineroad and known as Annesfield. Here they were able to open a high school. The Sisters had already taken charge of the parochial mixed school, with Sister Josephine Smith as head teacher. On December 22, 1g78, Rev. Mother Teresa appointed Rev Mother Julia Catagniol as Super-

ioress of Albany. with Sister Josephine and Sister Margaret in Community. On Jarman,' 17, 1879, Sister Zoe Chanouni and Sister Agnes Cantwell were transferred from Fremanne to join the pioneer Community. Rev. Mother Julia remained in charge at Albany for 17 years. her death occurring on May 4. 1895. In appreciation of her great charitiv a massive granite cross was erected to her memory. The first portion of the present Convent of 'St. Joseph was erected in the mission grounds in Aberdeen-street and taken over on June 21, 1881, by the Community. Since then many improvements and additions have made it the fine structure it is today. One of the present members of he Community. Sister Mary Joseph tCollins), celebrates to-day ( April 16) the golden jubilee of her religious profession, 36 years of which have been spent in Albany in the cause of education and other noble work.
