-I write with intense sorrow and sadness of heart because of the devastating ruin that has come on our Spanish Province, hitherto so nourishing and powerful both in vocations t4. our Congregation and in the Apostolic labours for souls. At the very beginning of the anti-Communist civil war six of our houses, which were situated in the portion of Spain under the tyrannical yoke of the Red Communists, were immediately suppressed. Cuenca, and Valencia were given over to profane uses Everything belonging to us, books, sacred vestments, furniture and the rest were destroyed. Any money in the bank was seized, and what shaii I say of our confreres who were slain by the sword out of hatred of the Church of God, but were crowned as martyrs, clothed in their own blood, and became the first flowers of martyrdom in the family of St. Alphonsus In our house dedicated to 0.L.P.S., in Madrid, and in our House of St. Michael the Archangel. also in Madrid, cix Fathers and six Brothers were slain. S ,me of these Fathers had reached the advanced age of 78 years, while another Father. aged 75, died of his sufferings. In the city of Cuenca three Fathers and one Brother were and in Valencia three Brothers were also 'murdered, There are other confreres still in prison suffering very cruelly. Through the Providence of God all our young alumni escaped, as they happened to be in National territory when the war broke out. Still on account of the war they are in the 7 eatest need. A few weeks ago I visited the houses where our young men are now and I was astounded to see the zeal with which they continued

Sir Hugh is delivering a series of letcures at the University ,Crawlev. their studies in such misery, not haytilz sufficient food or warmth, as the temperature was then 10 degrees below zero centigrade. There are many Fathers and Brothers still, hiding in the Red territory, and although communication with them is most difficult, we have had piteous letters from them telling us that they are actually dying of stai vatirtm.-
