Fourth Plenary Council of Australia and New Zealand 5,000 People Present at Opening Session Spectacular Procession In the presence of a congrega -Ion of more than 5,000 people, the public opening session of the fourth Plenary Council of the Catholic Church in Australia and New Zealand took place in St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. Excellent weather prevailed and large crowds watched the arrival of the representative Hierarchy of the various States. The scenes equalled those of the Congress year.

Nevin. presided at the archiepiscopal throne in the sanctuary. in which were seated members of the Hierarchy of the provinces of Sydney, Melbourne. A delaide. Perth. Brisbane. Hobart, and Wellington ( New Zealand). making in all 32 Archbishops and Bishops. Archbishop Kelly. the sole survivor of the last Plenary Council in 1905. attended bv his secretary. the Very Rev. The High Altar was specially decorated with arum lilies and golden daffodils, representing the Papal colours. yellow and white. Spectacular Procession. Before Pontifical High Mass which commenced shortly after 10 o'clock, there was a spectacular procession of Archbishops and Bishops in their episcopal robes. red copes, and plain cloth of gold mitres: they were attended by their chaplains and mitrebearers.

Also in the procession were members of the various Religious Orders. Clergy of Archdiocese, Papal Knights. Diocesan Consulters. and mitred Abbots in red copes and linen mitres. The procession moved from the Cathedral Chaptet House along St. Mary's Road. entered the Cathedral grounds at College Street and went along the footpath the whole length of the Cathedral before entering bv the main door. During its progress the Clergy c hanted "Veni Creator Spiritus" and Psalms 86 and 132.
