The anti-Italian Press campaign has subsided for the time being. The British Government was prompt to put the muzzle on a fter the dignified rebuke administered by Mussolini. Now, after secret negotiations of which we can have no knowledge. the ban ,rn English newspapers has been Of all the anti-Italian lifted. canards, none was so ridiculous as that of the German airman forced down in Bilbao. whose lirst remark was: "The Italians This proare poor soldiers."

"It is stated that the populace rushed out to welcome their 'liberators.'" The little twist makes all the difference. but it also reveals the twist in the mind, known as bias. The fighting in Barcelona between the Anarchists and their allies may be regarded as the second stage in the Communist plan A fter the most unruly elements of the Proletariat have been used to suppress all ol)position. the' themselves are brought under

the rigid discipline of Comunism. That is the real meaning of the statement ("West Australian." May 17. 1937). that the Communists have emerged as the champions of law and order. The terror has not disappeared, but it is now becoming a discip. Lined terror. The new Government is undet complete Communist domination, for the Socialists and Republican members have no influence, and the Anarchists have been completely excluded. Previously, of course, the Anarchists claimed power in the Cabinet. But they have fallen by the wayside, as does e very one who allies himself Nvith Communists. Even the great Caballero has fallen—the Spanish Lenin! Listen to this "West Australian." May 24. 1937) : "Genera! Pozas is exercising unexampled severity. . . .
