HIS EMINENCE -CARDINAL asa From all parts of Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands, and from all the Continents, with the exception of America, prelates and other dignitaries of the Catholic Church came to Melbourne to take part in the National Eucharistic Congress, which was opened by His Eminence Cardinal MacRory, the Papal Legate, in St. Patrick's Cathedral, Mel,.„ on Sunday last, when he celebrated Pontifical High Mass. Thousands of people were present at the cere, nony both within the Cathedral and outside in the streets. The scene in the Cathedral was of gre: t splendour and devotion. It was an inspiring spectacle when, at the moment of Consecration, 5,000 who waited outside the C athedral knelt in the rain. Thirty minutes before the ceremonies began St Patrick's Cathedral was filled with worshippers. Many w ere compelled to stand or kneel devoutly for more than three hours. With the arrival of Cardinal Mac. Rory at the great west door the sunlight began to break through leaden skies, and, as he entered it streamed through the beautiful stained glass windows. Clad in his red ce_rdinal's r obes and cappa magna, the Papal Legate walked through the Growded Cathedral, the worshippers sinking their knees to receive his blessing tc as he passed. With mien, the Legate continued tostately the SAnctuarY, f ollowed by an impressive retinue of fifty Archbishops and all parts of Australia Bishops from and from New Zealand and South Africa anci the Pacific Islands. In the body of the Cathedral were 300 priests wearing soutanes and surplices. The Legate took his seat on thePapal throne, which was draped in white satin and surmounted by the Papal coat of arms. Beside Cardinal MacRory, a magnificent figure in the Papalscarlet robes and biretta, sat hamberlains, in black velvet and gold lace and with richly decorated sword scabbards at their
rails, and delivered an address of welcome to the Legate. • He welcomed him personally because he had been associated with him for 25 years at He welcomed Maynooth College. him as the representative of Pope Pius XI., the Vicar of Christ,- and he welcomed him as the Primate of all Ireland, the motherland of most of the Roman Catholic people in Australasia.
After Cardinal MacRory had vested for the celebration of Pontifical High Mass, Monsignor Lonergan, as assistant priest, read the Papal Brief from the top of the altar steps. The Briet —the Pope's message to the Cardinal, giving him authority to open the Congress—was read first in the Latin of In reply, Cardinal MacRory referthe original and then in English, ad- red to the course of a century or so dressed to "Our beloved son, Joseph during which, he said, a great proMacRory, Cardinal Priest of the Holy gressive and virile church had sprung ,Roman Church, under the title of St. up in this country. HIS EXCELLENCY DR. BERNARDINT. APOSTOLIC DELEGATE.
Anglican Archbishop's Tribute to Catholic Church The visiting prelates to the Eucharistic Congress attended in their robes the Melbourne Town Hall, on Monday last, when the Lord Mayor (Councillor Wales) extended an offi-.sial welcome to the Papal Legate, Cardinal MacRory. and the visiting prelates. Of especial interest was the presence of Archbishop Head, leader of the Anglican Church in Melbourne, who expressed to the Papal Legate the good wishes of the Anglican body. A fter the Lord Mayor's speech and the Legate's response, Archbishop Head rose to address the audience, and he was greeted with prolonged applause. "I -am grateful to you for the way you have received me," he said, "because I have said and done things you may hardly approve of and because your weTcome shows me the real Christianity which binds us together." Archbishop Head said that he was glad to :attend the gathering for several reasons. Firstly, it had been a great pleasure to meet Cardinal MacRory. Tie had never met a Cardinal in the flesh before. Cardinal MacRory had been so courteous that one felt that if all Cardinals were like him it would be difficult to stand outside their Church. Secondly, he had a very great regard for the Catholic Church, and he would like its members to know that whatever he might feel it right to say, he had a tremendous re-3pect for them. He knew their wonderful history and was thrilled to see how they were carrying out the Congress "It is not often that I come to the Town Hall,' said Archbishop Mannix, in a pleasant speech, "but when I do I come with great pleasure, and always in excellent company. I am particularly delighted to find that the Cardinal has made such a deep impression on Archbishop Head. I have used all my wiles in an endeavour to convert him, but I confess that a.s a missionary in that -field T was a complete failure." 00-11 011. ,
