THE \EW
OPENED BY MS GRACE THE c,OADJUTOR ARCHBISHOP
ON
We are asked why we are meticulous regarding religion in our schools. Why so foolish in spending vast sums when efficient State schools are available? For answer we quote the words of Scripture, 'Suffer the little children . . . . Shall our children learn the truths of earth and be ignorant of the truths of heaven? Shall they learn the lowest and be ignorant of the highest? Shall they analyse the flower and dissect the animal, and pry into the secrets of nature, and yet not know Nature's God? That, is the reason why close cin ten thousand of our children In this- Atchdiocese housed within schools built by the generous donations of our people. We can estimate the cost of brick and wood that goes into our buildings, we can estimate the pounds that go out of our pockets for our children's education, we can reckon on what we save our fellow citizens in taxes; but these art more than counter-balanced by the reward we receive from our sacrifice, labour, and expenditure—viz., the imprinting of the image of the Saviour in the hearts of our Catholic boys and girls. -It has been said that a parish withcut a school is an orphan—it has no mother. This parish is no orphan. It has erected a school that, supported by your generous donations, will be the Christian and Catholic mother of your children, and your children's children, for generations to come." The building was a beautiful one, and one of which any contracto; might well be proud. For their excellent work in this regard, Messrs. Berry Brothers were deserving of high commendation. His Grace thanked the Parish Priest, the. men and women's committess, and all those who had worked so zealously for the temporal and spiritual interests o f the parish. To the Sisters of Mercy, in particular, they owed a deep debt of gratitude for their work in the cause of education, for many years past, in Victoria Park. Now that they had more corn. roodious buildings, he felt sure that their work would be even more successful than in the past. In a special mar. net." he thanked Father O'Connor, who almost, singlehanded. assumed the responsibility for all the organisation in connection with .he new building. His Grace concluded by reminding the people that the school belonged to them and to their ehil1ren, and urged them to contribute as genetously as they could, so that they would have not merely a beautiful school, but in the near future, they would have, above all, a beautiful school, unencumbered by any financial btirden. (-Applause.) SUNDAY
