He said he 'had witnessed the sufferings of the nation himself. and heard the lying propavanda which promised

Spain happiness if she deserted her old paths. It would appear that these passages have been resented by the Spanish Government, which considers them, according to a message in the "A.B.C.." of an officious character, to have beer. misplaced during a Church ceremony, and argues that, as the churches are now State property and only lent to

The Immodesty of Authors

Referring to the tolerance given by the public to authors who go ,beyond the limits of decency in their writings, C ardinal Routine. of Westminster, wrote in his Lenten Pastoral: ' Some five-and-twenty years ago the minds of many were disturbed by what w as known as 'Nfodernism.' Owing to the energetic action of the then reigning Pontiff, that danger was met and destroyed; but recently we have noticed a tendency to another kind of modernism. namely, in matters of morality--a tendency not exactly to defend, but to give a certain toleration to, departures from the traditional modesty, reserve and reticence, which are characteristic of Christianity. "Books have been written by writers w ho claim the Catholic name in which this modernism has shown itself: and they have not met universally with

the condemnation which they have deserved." On this subject, the Cardinal quotes a passage from a speech he made during the National Catholic Congress in 1929. Part of this quotation reads: "The writer of books, the painters of pictures. the actors on the stage or for the screen'. the women by the fashion of their dress, who render selfcontrol more difficult for the average normal Man or woman. and who, thereby, make the natural craving for sinful self-gratification more imperious than it would otherwise be, are doing moral evil and are committing sin in the sight of God. "No silly prating about the necessity of elucidating problems. or that 'to the pure all things are pure,' or that the claims of art must be satisfied, which we frequently hear, can change the moral law, or alter the fundamental facts of human nature!'

the faithful for the purposes of worship, there is an implied discourtesy ir. any criticism of the Government's a.-tions which is made in a public church. Representations are to be made to the Holy See. expressing this displeasure of the Government. and the grounds would seem to be, in the first place. that the Nuncio. acting as Dean of the Diplomatic Corps. organised the c elebration. and invited the accredited representatives in Spain of all countries. Second, on account of the tone which he employed in his address, in which he censured the fundamental law of the Spanish State and the laicising character of much of the legislation approved by the constituent Cortes. It is expected that the Minister of Justice will address an energetic protest to the Bishop of Madrid for having allowed the use of the 'Cathedral Church of Madrid for this purpose, and pointing out that, in virtue of existing ,the State cedes the use of the churches to the faithful for acts of worship only, and not for manifestations of a political character like this one, which the Government. as stated above. regr, rels as an act of censure on the Spanish Republic. "El Debate" points out that the Ambassadors and Ministers of Germany, 'Argentine. Portugal. Brazil, Venezuela, Tapan. Bolivia. the Charge d'Affaires of C' olumbia. as well as representatives from the Embassies of Italy and Prance. accompanied by their families took past in the ceremony, and paid their homage to the Nuncio.
