Subiaco's New Church •

Foundation Stone Laid by His Grace the Archbishop A Although the beautiful new cliurch :hat is to grace the suburb of Subiaco almost roof high, it was not till Sunday last that the foundation stone '.vas blessed and set into position. His G'race the Archbishop, assisted by Most Rev. Dr. Prendiville, performed the 'nistoric ceremony. The church, which faces the beautiful buildings of the Hospital of St. John of God, will be a worthy addition to the architectural beauty of the city. It will cost sc‘rnewhat over £15,000, exlusive of furnishings, and will be :inished by August. • A Beautiful Church. It is in the perpendicular Gothic style, and will occupy a space of 158 x S6 feet, facing Salvado-road. It is situated in a commanding position, :nid-way between the old Subiaco and he dew. Tire building will be ot brick with ar!- ificial stone tracery to windows, and cement dressings. The ceilings the San : Iry and the Chapels are to be of fil-r. us plaster in Gothic treatment, and tim:;hed to match the walls.

HISTORIC DAY

The nave ceilings will be in fibrous plaster with "ten-test- accoustical The apex of the ceiling will board. be 441t. above the nave floor; the height of the nave walls being 36ft. The floor of the Sanctuary and of the Chapels will be finished in a rich treatment. of terrazzo; while the main floor of the nave will be in jarrah.

The Ceremony. Promptly at 3 o'clock, the procession s tarted from St. Joseph's School, where religious services will continue to be held until the new church is complete. His Grace the Archbishop and the Coadjutor Archbishop were attended by a guard of honour from the members of the metropolitan Hibernian Society.

Description. The building zonsists of a nave, 901t. x 301t., with side aisles, 90ft. x 121t. The Sanctuary is 401t. x 30ft., with a Nuns' Tribune from the side of the Sanctuary, 231t. x 14ft. Two Chapels, a priest's sacristy, a boys' sacristy, and a working sacristy flank the Sanctuary.• T wo other Chapels lead from the side aisles. At the front of the building, the main entrance porch is 301t. x 13ft., w ith an additional 15ft x 15ft. under the tower; and a baptistry, 20ft. x 13f t.

On arrival at the doorway of the half-constructed church, the Archbishop and those attending him, entered and blessed the place where the altar will be erected. He then came out of the church and blessed the foundation stone, next placing the stone in position with a trowel presented to him by the architect (Mr. E. Le B. The building will be roofed with • Marseilles- pattern tiles, and it will occupy a space of 1581t. x 86ft., facing Salvado-road, and forming a vista to the end of Connolly-street. The tower. when complete, will be 125f t. high. The architect is Mr E. Le B. Hendei, son. F.R.IA.

Monsignor Verling's Address of Welcome. In a brief address, Right Rev. Monsignor Verling welcomed His Grice the Archbishop Archbishop to Subiaco. (lune was always assured of a hearty welcome wherever he went, but never more so than in Subiaco, and he was never more welcome to Subiaco than that day, when he just now laid the foundation stone of their new church and placed it in position. (Applause.) He and the people of Subiaco owed a debt of gratitude to the Archbishop for many favours, but to-day in particular. It was the Archbishop who pro. vided for them this beautiful site, and it was through his encouragement and support that he (the Monsignor) had (Continued on Page 2.)
