One of the seventy-nine churches in Papuasia. The mission was established in 1884 and is ministered to by thirty-two Fathers of the Sacred Heart, who are assisted by twenty-four Lay Brothers; forty White Sisters (twenty-six of whom are Australians); twenty Native Sisters, 206 Catechists. There are ninety-seven village schools and sixteen parochial schools and orphanages, ten English high schools, six technical schools, one Catechists' normal school and one Foundling hospital. The Catholic population is about 16,076 (all native except about 300 whites). The children receiving instruction in the Catholic schools number 4,650. Those in the orphanages number 384. The above block was kindly lent by the Orient Company whose liner "Otranto" recently carried a number of tourists to the Vicariate.
