These picturesque ruins of a Cistercian Abbey, founded in Ireland by Donald O'Brien. King of Thomond. in 1169, are situated on the right bank of the River Suir, about three miles south-west of the Cathedral town of The fame of the establishment was mainly due Thurles, Co. Tipperary. to the fact that the Church was enriched with a Shrine of the Holy Cross. The relic was one of the most considerable in Christendom. For more than three and a half centuries. the Abbey was one of the most frequented pilHenry, VIII. suppressed the Abbeygrimage places in Ireland.
