Mass in Penal Days in Ireland
NDER Cromwell and Elizabeth, especially after she was ex-communicated by the Pope, the celebration of Holy Mass was banned in Ireland. Cromwell, Elizabeth and James disliked Parliaments. After the so-called Rebellion of 1641 Cromwell abolished the Irish Parliament and gave Ireland only a small representation at Westminister. Under the Westminister Parliament the Cromwellian Settlement was carried out, and Catholics were proscribed. No mercy was shown to priests and the Mass was made a penal offence, and could only be celebrated in secret, as the above picture shows. Catholics plundered by the Cromwellians were denied even the justice of a trial In the reign of Elizabeth the Irish Catholic was treated just as intolerantly and with similar injustice and violence. The history of the Penal Days is the blackest in the story of Ireland. Burke, the great English statesman, describes the Penal Code as "well-fitted for the oppression, impoverishment and degradation of a feeble people and the debasement in them of human nature itself as ever proceeded from the perverted ingenuity of man.-
