LifeinsidetheChurchwasfullof primitivefervour,joy,andthemutual loveof"thebrethren."TheApostles weredead.buttheyhadleftbehind thembishopsorgroupsofbishops ("Elders"?)inallplaces,andtheBis hopofRomewasalreadyrecognised ashavingaspecialauthority.With convertscontinuallyflowingin,Bap tismwasagreatfeatureinthelifeof theChurch:convertswerecarefullyinstructedfirst,andtheApostles'Creed begantoheusedasaprofessionof faithtoherecitedbeforeBaptism(as itstillis).Christianassembliestook placeonthefirstdayoftheweek(insteadoftheSabbath)thefaithful-mostlyslavesandsuch-like-metwhere theycould,butgenerallyinthelarge houseofsomerichChristian.They wouldbegin-vithanimitationofthe Jewishsynagogueservice-some psalms,scripture-reading,andarelatingofsomepartofourLord'slife;perhapsanAgape,orlove-feast,asreferredtoinCos.xi.:andfinallythe Eucharist,whichwouldbeasimple imitationoftheLastSupper,withthe BishoptakingtheplaceofOurLord. InthemindofRamsayMacDonald,theBritishPrimeMinister,saysa Catholiccontemporary,theunderlyingreasonforpresent-daysocialillsis thelossofapropersenseofhumanvalues.Thisisshownnotonlyinthe loveofmoney,butintheloveofthoseglitteringnothingsthatmoney buys.WhileMr.MacDonalddeploredtheevilsuttheday,hewasnoten- tirelypessimistic.ThisgrizzledParliamentaryleader,victorinmanypoli- ticalbattles,foundreasonto"thankGalthatthisisalsoanagewhenthe stillsmallvoice01spiritualityischallengingitall."
Sp,akingonbehalfoftheBritishPrimeMinistertoadeputationrepre- sentativeofthe Churchs,whichwaiteduponhimontheHousing Question,Mr.Clynes,referringtothespiritwhichinspiresthepolicyofthe LabourGovernmentandthereproachlevelledagainsthimselfandcolleaguesthattheybasedcertainactsoftheLabourpolicyontheSermon ontheMount,said:"Wearenotintheleastdismayedbyareproachof thatkind.Ouranswertoitisthatourconvictionprofoundlyisthatuntil theGovernmentsoftheworlddobasetheirpolicy,industriallyandecono- mically,moreaponthosedoctrines,mankindwillnotbeasfree,ashappy, andasChristianasmankindtheworldoveroughttobe.Youmaytakeit thatthisisverylargely,ifnotwholly,thespiritwhichinspiresourpol- icy."Itisabraveannouncement,andamostworthyone.
ALondonnewspaperdescribesourlatestFederalextravagance-theten millionloan-as"anexcellentandsafeinvestment,ofwhichfivemillions areforpurposesequallyadvantageoustotheCommonwealthandthe MotherCountry."Translatedintoitspropermeaning,itmeans,asthelit- tleboysaidtohismother,"We'rehalves,mother,dinky,fifty-fifty."TheAustraliantax,eayer,presumably,ispayingthroughthenoseforthislatest accommodation.The"LondonFinancialNews"letsthecatoutofthehag whenitsaystheloanisanexcellent,mediumdated,high-yieldingtrustee security.AreforminFederalfinancewillcomesomedaywhentheAus- traliangetsabumpandiscompelledtothink.Justnowtheaverage onethinksthebigloanisjust."it."

Hedidnotspeakanyoftheoldtime-wornplatitudesaboutthe"Roman Church,"thoughhedoesnotlovehertodistraction.Hegotrightdown tothemodernevils,andinhisinabilityasaChristianministertosuggesta Chrstianremedy,followedtheexampleofallsenselesswould-bereformers. urgedthenecessityofirrationalextremitiesastheonlyantidote.TheGod- givengiftoffreedomhasnomeaningforhimwhensomeelecttouseit totheirowndestruction.Ifonemangetsdrunk,Rev.Tullocharguesthat noman.shouldtakedrink-goodlogic'TomakeWestAustraliamoral inthedrinklinehewouldforceitsGovernmenttodotheneedful He wouldasktheGovernment,electedbythepeople,towrenchthepeople'sfreedomfromthem.Thedrinkevilhasitsvictims,so,too,haveotherevils, suchasracesuicide,birthcontrol.TheselatteraccountformoreWestAus- tralianlivesthandrink,whydoesnotMr.Tullochtaketheseinhand?As wesuggestedacourseinhistoryforMr.Richardson,acourseinlogicforMr. Tullochwouldavailmuch,especially byaScotchprofessor

COMPROMISINGBIGGUNS.
Intheconference'sefforttospreadtheirzealtootherquarters.it wassuggestedthatArchbishopRileyshouldhecalledupontohelpin thecampaignagainsttheirfellowmen'sfreedom.Thatiswhatweterm compromising.Whylayholdoftheheelsofanunoffendingeclesiastieal prelateandforcehimtogotounpopularextremes?Notverymanyweeks ago,theAnglicanorphanages,underArchbishopRiley'scare.werebenefitted bytheTrottingAssociationtoalargeextent.Thismoneycomesunder thecurseissuedbyRev.Tullochagainstgambling.Wewillwatchtheextentofconcertedactionthatwilleventuatefromtheinvitationissuedto theAnglicanprelate-wewillwatchwithinterest.Aswegotopress,ArchbishopRileyisroundingoffhisseventiethyear-whydoesRev.Tulloch wishtorufflevenerableoldageanditsdignity.
