CHURCH, police, government and parliamentary representatives joined Congolese migrants at a special Mass last Saturday as the Congolese Catholic Community of Perth welcomed their new chaplain Fr Jean Kabwika Kambana and prayed for peace in their war-ravaged home-country. Over 60 people turned out for a Mass and afternoon tea on June 27 at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish,

Nollamara, including the local member of Parliament Janine Freeman, and the Member for Cannington, Bill Johnston. Paul Farrelly from the Department of Immigration and local police, Seargeant Marc Hall and Constable Dean Hirst, also attended to introduce themselves to the fledgling community. Fr Jean arrived in Perth recently after being forced to flee the violence engulfing the Democratic Republic of Congo, having previously visited WA during World Youth Day celebrations in July 2008. As the principal celebrant he was joined by the Vicar General, Mgr Brian O'Loughlin - representing Archbishop

Barry Hickey - and Fr Joshua Marini, Parish Priest of Mirrabooka. The community's President, Pierre Luboya, welcomed dignitaries to their celebration and asked participants to pray for harmony among Congolese everywhere, lamenting the civil unrest that has plagued Congo for decades and has led to an influx of refugees to Australia and other first-world countries. "The lists of atrocities and of those who have lost their live are horrendous," Mr Luboya said, explicitly refering to the killing and sexual assault of women, children and men in the region. "We need your help to strengthen us Please turn to Page 6

The Missionaries of God's Love are a new religious community, with branches for men and women. Two of the Sisters will be in Perth speaking at a range of events in July. Any women interested in their charism are welcome and invited to attend.

TWO representatives of one of the newest Australian religious communities of consecrated women - with an average age of 28 - will visit Perth in mid-July to let women in Perth interested in religious life know about their existence. The Missionaries of God's Love emerged from and remain closely involved with the Disciples of Jesus, a covenant community based in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Canberra. There are two branches of the MGLs, one for men and the other for women. A covenant community such as the Disciples is one of the new ecclesial realities in the life of the Church which sees individuals - and sometimes entire families - focus seriously on their vocation as Christians. Members of covenant communities seek to make a more serious commitment to the Church and their faith by undertaking regular formation as Catholic Christians, Please turn to Page 2
