Archbishop Spalding BOY’S LACROSSE 2026

Mission Statement

As a Catholic college- preparatory secondary school, Archbishop Spalding High School is committed to challenging our students to grow spiritually, academically, physically, and socially. The school community provides a caring environment that affirms the dignity of the individual and promotes learning.

A Letter From Coach Hockel

First off, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Evan Hockel, and I am the Head Coach of the Archbishop Spalding Boy’s Lacrosse Program. I am in my first year as Head Coach, but have been a part of Spalding lacrosse since I joined the coaching staff as the Head JV coach in 2016. I’m also an alumni having graduated in 2008. I would like to thank the School president Shannon Gilligan, the principal Regina O’Hara, and the Athletic Director Jon Mellinger for giving me this amazing opportunity. I would also like to Thank the coaches, Troy Becker, Jimmy Spillane, Peter Papaleonti, Gunnar Schimoler, Michael Terry, David Sherwood, Jack Canter, Justin Marschalweerd, and Joe Ullery (class of 2006). I truly believe we have the best coaching staff in the world. Their dedication all year long amazes me. I envision this program being one of the best in the country. I want everyone involved with Spalding Lacrosse to have a first class experience. I want our players to be coached hard, taught life lessons, succeed in the classroom and love playing this beautiful sport. I want our players’ parents to enjoy watching their son(s), support the coaches, and form bonds with other players’ parents. I want our alumni to follow the program, come back to our various events, and wear their Spalding Lacrosse gear proud! This program is built on our 3 Standards. Character, Toughness, and Sacrifice. I firmly believe that these help shape boys into successful young men, and build a foundation to attack this world head on. I want to thank everyone involved with this organization that help make it the special program that it is. GO CAVS!

Sincerely ,

Andy Eser Award Eamon Kiely

Andy Eser was a model student and an outstanding athlete on the Varsity Football and Lacrosse teams at Archbishop Spalding. He was a two way end in football, and a second team All County Goalie on the Lacrosse field. In addition to his athletic achievements, Andy was a volunteer councilor for Special Olympics, a Student Government Representative, and a member of the Key Club, German Club, and National Honors Society. Eser was being recruited by Ivy League Schools and schools such as Navy and Georgetown to play Division 1 lacrosse. Sadly, he never got the opportunity to choose what school he wanted to attend. On October 10th 2000, during his senior year at Spalding, Eser was tragically killed in a car accident while driving home to Pasadena. In April 2001, both Andy’s #48 Football Jersey, and #7 lacrosse jersey were retired. In 2017, Andy’s #7 lacrosse jersey was unretired and was given to a Senior to wear for the season. Each year the team selects a Senior to wear Andy’s #7. Andy continues to be an inspiration to the Spalding Community through his Scholarship Program, and his memorial on campus.

Dear Spalding Lacrosse Community,

The Spalding Lacrosse Alumni Association (SLAA) has been up and running now for over five years. With the help of some passionate alumni and the support of the school, we have had fantastic growth!

The goals of the SLAA are to bring together the hundreds of alumni that have played lacrosse at Spalding and have a shared bond over the years. We want to create a way that the Spalding Lacrosse community can stay connected years after graduation and feel a part of the current teams suiting up in the spring. The SLAA is a way to receive updates about the current program, connect with former teammates, be included for alumni games, and stay up to date on events and functions for the Spalding Lacrosse Community. One of our biggest goals is to recognize and thank those individuals who have supported the program. We are grateful for everything they have done for the program and for the school as a whole.

If you are interested to learn more about the SLAA please visit www.archbishopspalding.org/slaa

Thank you again for everyone’s support and GO CAVS!
