Curator’s Statement
SquaredAlumni 2015 brings together eight of the most popular alumni from previous FourSquared exhibitions at Arc in support of local non-profit organizations. Each artist will be exhibiting four works, mostly priced under $900. The exhibition is a reflection of the Arc partners strong and abiding interest in supporting San Francisco Bay Area art, artists and community. All of the artists in the exhibition will be donating 20% of their proceeds to the beneficiary organizations. Arc will be donating 100% of its proceeds from this exhibition to those organizations. Curator: Michael Yochum is the author of SF Art News, which maintains a list of featured art events and openings in San Francisco, as well as profiling local artists in periodic articles. Michael Yochum, Matthew Frederick, Stephen C. Wagner and Priscilla Otani are co-founders of Arc Gallery & Studios.

Sidnea D’Amico Coexistence My painting process involves building up the surface in many complex layers, only to scrape off many of these coats to reveal nuances of interacting pigments. I often add textural mixed media elements, such as collaged photography or fabrics. Colors, lines and shapes turn into whimsical and playful works of art. I am constantly translating a story I have in mind. Coexistence series is a dialogue between images from different sources. Some of those images have a personal meaning others I am just drawn to. Combining them I allow their interaction to quietly review their existence or simply to give them a recognizable presence.

Barbara Kleinhans Sightlines Sightlines is a series of painted colorscapes reminiscent of the Wisconsin countryside of my childhood. Blended colors and blurred horizon lines are my interpretation of the passing of time but also a sense of standing still. I use painting knives to apply and manipulate the paint directly on the canvas. I like working with painting knives because of the variety of surfaces that can be achieved and how I can build up a minimalist composition. Most of my paintings have between five to ten thick layers of paint that I use to create texture, depth and a bit of history and mystery to the work.

Drawing inspiration from a musical notion in which two voices that sound and move independently coalesce to create a more elaborate and harmonious music, Counterpoint is a collaborative photo-based project pushing the limitations of a singular vision towards a more fluid and complex perspective by interweaving two creative voices. This project is essentially a visual conversation intended to redefine the boundaries of authorship and the photographic document while creating a novel approach to defining landscape that moves beyond what either artist can do individually. Beginning with a single roll of film, one artist photographs various scenes throughout a specific landscape. The film is then rewound, exchanged with the other artist to duplicate this process, with this exchange repeated multiple times, eventually creating a surprising and complexly layered document of that place. The multiple exposed films are scanned in sections of consecutive frames, the artists digitally extract discrete scenes from these sections, and then those scenes are reworked to accentuate selected formal and contextual components. This unique synthesis between digital and analog technologies relies on the distinctive characteristics and possibilities of each, yet also unites them into an aesthetically imaginative and innovative form. Opposing the singularity and clarity of conventional direct photographic representation, and embracing the serendipitous wonder of this atypical process, the resulting photographs are visually rich and highly complex compositions that describe a creative interchange composed of fragments of information, time, and space. Such interpretive photographs are no longer picture perfect portals into reality, but now depict a multidimensional perspective that expands our notions of the photographic instant and reorders the appearance of photographic space. This approach allows the artists to convey a blending of visions where the individual and editorial narrative is replaced by a vitality and intricately textural expression commensurate with musical counterpoint.

In my exploration of the human figure, I try to bring movement, expression, and impact to the physical boundaries of the canvas. ‘Scale’ is a very important concept for me – not only the size of the canvas, but how the figure or landscape elements fit within the canvas. I strive for immediacy and monumentality in my work. A moment caught in time but also a timeless sense of grandeur. My use of color relies on nature but is never a slave to it. My technique is based on the old master techniques of 17th century Italian and Flemish painters. Though rooted in tradition, my work has the impact of contemporary painting. The figures confront – they meet the viewer half way (sometimes more than half way). Through layers of under-painting, I am able to bring a sense of movement caught, which brings life to the image – an impression that the expression will change suddenly, or a muscle will ripple. Paul Morin’s works are included in private collections on five continents. Paul paints in a traditional beaux-arts style, and by stripping context from his figures; his works are decidedly modern – images that meet the viewer with a sense of scale that is very individual. The works here are four prints from a series: “Twelve Views of Virginia”. The project started as a straight-forward commission for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, but it soon took on a life of its own. I visited Virginia fifteen times. I studied Virginia’s history, culture, geography and sociology. My trips throughout Virginia were filled with fresh discoveries, I stopped by the roadside to photograph and sketch a quintessential Virginia farm against the backdrop of a marvelous mountain. Only later did I find out that it was a famous mountain. This was the genesis of “The Priest, Blue Ridge”. I had seen Natural Bridge in a Japanese art history textbook via a landscape painting by Frederick Church; then, I saw the original painting at the University of Virginia; and finally, I got goosebumps when, a century and a half later, I saw the actual Natural Bridge on a rainy morning. Each moment was connected, woven together as if in a spider web centered by this Natural Bridge. The project highlighted why I make landscapes, It is not just about chronicling a place, In rendering the landscape, I am rendering of a set moment in time, through this collection of my fleeting moments, I hope that each of my prints captures a sense of 一期一会 (ichigo ichie) “treasure every meeting for it will never recur”.

Sonya Philip I am an artist, maker and teacher. I have always straddled different worlds, whether through my mixed-race heritage or the mutually demanding roles of mother and artist. I am accustomed to the interplay and at home in the places where art and craft intersect. My work is born of patience. There is a simple intricacy in each stitch and an incremental care in making things by hand. I love to see how far I can push the craft or what unlikely material I can use. I am drawn to natural fibers and have respect for the direct connection to the plant or animal. I work primarily in small series, they might be discrete ideas or ones that feed from one to suggest another. There are times when the gestation of a piece guides the process. I take great pleasure in seeing an idea fully formed and even more so when the initial concept changes in a way that exceeds my expectations.

Eric Rewitzer
As a printmaker, Eric Rewitzer must employ a number of different skills, adding carving and printing to more familiar disciplines of drawing, composition, and color. Combining this discipline with the inspirations of the modern day – urban life, diversity, and the citizen’s attachment to the natural world – has been the foundation of Eric’s artistic exploration for years. The resulting prints are an interplay between natural and urban landscapes. Rewitzer was born in Flint, Michigan, and grew up in western part of the Great Lakes State in a small town called North Muskegon. Rewitzer landed in San Francisco in 1997, and found his home in the outer avenues of the Richmond District of San Francisco. In 2006, Eric and his wife, Annie Galvin, also an artist, founded 3 Fish Studios, creating a dedicated space where they can make and show their artwork, as well as teach classes, host events, and showcase the talents of other local artists. Located just off Ocean Beach in the Outer Sunset District, 3 Fish Studios has been warmly welcomed into the the community, cultivating a collaborative process of creating and sharing art, surrounded by the vibrancy of creative people sharing ideas. It has resulted in Rewitzer’s artwork being included in public and private collections around the world, and available through outlets like the California Historical Society, the SFMOMA store, and the Bay Area Discovery Museum

Rebecca Szeto Paintbrush Portraits My series, Paintbrush Portraits, plays with notions of re-forming beauty and value. I use humble, end-of-life materials inspired by my experience as a faux finisher and love for art history. The paintbrush is self-referential, acting as both subject and object. It refers to the history of painting, through the medium of paint, using its own tool. I am interested in the poetic intersection of the material and the immaterial -- a transformative, and often humorous synthesis of confounded expectations. The slow and repetitive pace of whittling allows me time to reflect more directly on the idiosyncrasies of each individual brush. The action of whittling serves as a metaphor for reducing something to its core value or essence. These works pay homage to a sensibility and vitality found in Old Masters’ works. The four works shown at Arc Gallery are part of my latest edition of Paintbrush Portraits highlighting lost, obscure and powerful stories of women across history and geography. These lady-like portraits are a playful strategy I use to draw the viewer in so that the true nature of the work becomes clear.
