Curator’s Statement

FourSquared 2016 is a unique exploration of the works of sixteen Bay Area artists. Each of the artists has produced sixteen small works, presented in sixteen clusters giving the audience the experience of sixteen micro solo exhibitions. All works are priced under $500. This 7th annual exhibition is a reflection of the co-curators’ strong and abiding interest in local, affordable art represented here by some of our most talented local artists. Curators: Michael Yochum is the author of SF Art News, which writes about artists and openings in the San Francisco Bay Area. Matthew Frederick is founder of Art Farm, an artist collective in the Mission, where he maintains his studio. Michael and Matthew are co-founders of Arc Gallery, Arc Fine Arts Consulting & Arc Studios, along with Stephen C. Wagner and Priscilla Otani.

Strangers Seemingly ordinary people and events contain strange and incomprehensible elements which interest me greatly. To explore the significance in these every day observances is what drives me. I am drawn to contemporary figures involved in their complex inner world, caught unawares and doing ordinary things. Furthermore, I examine the tension between our internal drives and the external world in the context of contemporary urban life. The characters I incorporate in my paintings are the anonymous strangers I have encountered. In most cases they are sourced from self-made imagery. I carefully stage, create scenarios for and isolate them in both familiar and equivocal spaces. They become suspended between the real world and the dream world. Thereby, reflecting the experiences we have a belonging and not belonging; of the connection and dislocation between our selfhood and society; and lastly, of our uncertain and fragile identities and relationships. Atmospheric elements and shadows recur in my works often and I build layers of paint and marks to achieve these effects. I am highly in tune with the lighting, mood and negative space as they serve an integral component in my paintings. They become a continuation of the figureâ€™s state of being and condition. What I seek are the ambiguities and the question marks in the imagery. It is the very act of painting with its slowness, labor and thinking through the paint, which allows for this reflection. Sixteen Hand Studies I've always been more of a drawer than a painter. That's not to say I haven't made my share of paintings over the years â€” I simply have felt more comfortable with a pencil or a piece of charcoal in my hands than a paintbrush. So as a way of challenging myself, I decided I'd make 16 figurative paintings for this show. For my figurative drawings, I typically work on paper with a live model. I love the spontaneity of that process and the ephemeral quality of the finished piece. Working with paint on panel for this project was a very different process...much more deliberate, similar to the way I go about etching a plate when making a print. But with oils I do love the way the picture gradually comes to life, the layering and blending of the paint, the feel of applying it to the panel. As for my subject matter, I thought it would be interesting to focus on a specific part of the figure. I enjoy drawing hands â€” I like how expressive they can be. It also seemed a good way to unify the various pieces into a cohesive body of work.

Underground Art I explore hidden, secret, abandoned places and feel compelled to tell their tales through my lens. I love to find latent compositions in chaos, neglect and dereliction; the more orphaned a subject, the more inviting and intriguing its narrative. Long-exposures and painting with light allow me to illuminate and share my interpretations, facilitating an experience with the viewer where desires are developed, imaginations inspired, and fantasies kindled. By shooting off the beaten path, my art documents the unknown, catches moments on the fringes of history, and frames the undiscovered. I use vivid colors to evoke positive associations: dancing swirls of light add a sense of levity and playfulness to an otherwise disturbing environment. My Underground Art images exude energy because I, the witness, am everywhere in each of them.

Scott has pursued his love of photographing people, urban landscapes, events and abstracts while teaching middle school in Kenya and Sweden, taking care of a relative with Alzheimerâ€™s, and teaching in the Berkeley Unified School District. Scott is a largely selfeducated photographer, studying in workshops, including an intensive photography program in Missoula Montana in 1998. The Title is Called ... Creativity Explored: Tell me about your work for the upcoming Four Squared exhibition. Who are these 16 people? Christina Fong: Actors, actresses, singers, mayors, and one super model. CE: Why did you choose those particular people? CF: To change several people. CE: How do you plan to change them? CF: Special ideas for the future being. CE: Can you give me an example of a special idea? CF: Like, anything that comes into my mind. CE: Where do you get your ideas? From other artists? From magazines? From— CF: I can tell you a few things: high school and college. And just popular people. Celebrities. CE: Are you saying your interest in celebrities started in high school? CF: Yep. CE: I know you occasionally create animals—as well as some imaginary, fantastical creatures—but you mostly portray current celebrities in your work. What is it about celebrities that makes them so appealing to draw? CF: Celebrities are fascinating. And talented. And have a whole lot of attitude. Is that it? I hope that’s it. CE: How do you feel about discussing your art? Are you ever uncomfortable talking about it? CF: No. I’m happy. CE: Is there anything else you’d like to people to know about your work? CF: Just that I have dead skeletons in the closet, and I want to let them come out. Keep them guessing. Ha ha!

Kitchen Sink Drama In 1950’s London my mother and grandmother struggled from poverty, and as a way to make ends meet we pushed a pram filled with clothes and odds and ends to sell at the local open air market. This experience gave me a lot of insight into the daily lives of neighborhood residents. It was all about the hustle and bustle of wanting to get all the good deals, find friends to gossip with and in general just to have that weekend sense of camaraderie. For lunch, I was always sent on my roller skates to get “chip butties”, (rolls slathered with butter and filled with fat French fries) and giant cups of tea. I learned a lot about life and as an artist I’ve been inspired by these everyday lives. While each of these 16 paintings can stand alone, I wanted to create a larger cohesive narrative that gives a glimpse of these people creating their own daily dramas as they scurry to get to market. I purposely leave the faces vague so viewers can maybe imagine their own stories and childhood memories.

Ivy Jacobsen

Midsummer Night's Dream Painting is a meditation, a chance at uninterrupted peace. The world seems to fall away as the painting pulls me into the clarity of present moment of awareness. It is through this process and space that the unique journey of each work reveals itself. I strive to create a place of magical realism in my landscapes, balancing magical elements with real world rendering of flora and Fauna found in our natural world. My paintings are composed of many thin layers of oil paint, bronzing powder, acrylic paint, epoxy resin, and other mixed medias on wood panel. Through the multiple semi-transparent layers the trees and plant forms begin to occupy various spaces in the foreground and background, creating the illusion of depth. It is my hope that the viewer is invited "into" the painting to fully explore the imaginary environment.

Carol Jessen Rain, Fog and Mist A blank canvas presents a challenge for any artist but looking at 16 blank surfaces, however small, can be quite daunting. I chose to focus these 16 paintings on a subject I have explored for decades; rain, fog and the unfolding atmospheric changes as day recedes into the formless abstraction of night. Many of these are reinterpretations of pieces done in the past involving urban spaces. Some are highly representational and others are verging on abstraction by softening the forms as changing light and atmosphere obscure the image. For me every painting is a learning experience exploring edges, contrasts, values, color and most importantly, design and composition. My art mentor, William Lansberg, once explained to me that the same rules of design apply whether working representationally or abstractly. Every shape, line and form within the work is a visual "arrow" which leads the eye around the rectangle and it is up to the artist to control the movement of the viewer's eye and keep it moving. CAROL JESSEN was born and raised in Oakland, California. She received her BFA from San Francisco State University in journalism and biology. After graduating she donned her backpack and traveled around the world including Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and many countries of the Far East. She then attended Mendocino Art Center and the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Enticed by the far east, she moved to Kyoto, Japan for a year to learn the technique of Japanese woodblock printing and later went on to study under master printer, Toshi Yoshida. She was also tutored in design, composition and the psychology of perception by William S. Lansberg. She has lectured and performed woodblock demonstrations at Stanford University, the de Young Museum and the Asian Art Museum. She worked as a â€œpre-computerâ€? graphic designer and illustrator until saving up enough money to stop working and find a studio where she could devote herself to fine art. Hunters Point Shipyard, the once abandoned naval shipyard in San Francisco, is where Carol enjoys her studio by the bay. Her primary mediums are oil painting and various forms of printmaking and collage. Her work was featured at the New York Art Expo in 2004 by Editions Limited where her original oil paintings and pastels sold out. Daily Encounters The fundamental nature of my aesthetic rests in the use of simple, quiet compositions that visually communicate emotion within the precepts of narrative realism: intimate scenes of family gatherings, unusual renderings of ordinary objects, subtle glimpses of everyday life. These images are collectively reflected on stillness, solitude, and mystery; yet with an element of comfort and familiarity. My creative approach is driven by the desire to balance traditional principles of painting and contemporary design, seeking inspiration from by a variety of artistic genres and periods, including 17th Century Dutch genre paintings, 19th and 20th Century American Realism, as exemplified in the works of John Singer Sargent and Andrew Wyeth, and modern documentary photographers such as Walker Evans and Sally Mann. In my effort to bring together traditional and contemporary design practices, I strive to create works of art that retain a timeless quality while incorporating contemporary subject matter. In doing so, it is my resolve to provide viewers with visual explanations of emotion that will hopefully make for a lasting impression.

Mystery and Memory For the past few years, my sculptures have been repeatedly glazed, stained, and fired to give the surfaces the look of disintegrating paint over weathered wood. This softening and reduction of form so that its essential nature is revealed is a metaphor I use for the passing of time, or timelessness. The work I am presenting here is called â€œMystery and Memoryâ€?. The open ended small framed boxes contain objects that by their placement hint at a narrative, but the precise stories are obscure, allowing the viewers to make up their own. The imagery draws from my own life and experience; the natural world, drinking tea (a reference to my own English background) and various dark thoughts and imaginings.

Structure This group of San Francisco Cityscapes evolved in response to two defining factors: it's a series, in a small format. As a separate series, I realized I could stray somewhat from my usual approach by choosing subjects with higher contrast and by using a brighter palette. This intensity also worked to make the smaller pieces more powerful. I chose single buildings to simplify the composition and emphasize the relationship to surrounding structures. The result was the discovery of new shapes, new materials to render, and new modes of abstracting the subject. The structure of the series became a way of expressing the subject. And it was fun.

Inappropriate This series is meant to be inappropriate, like the shock value of a word, carefully selected, and thrown like a curve ball into the least likely situation. 'Cunt' is an aggressive word, but when you add ’ish’ to the end (cuntish), you diffuse the word’s meaning. This series is less typical of my previous work, in that it’s much more direct, leaving little for interpretation, with the exception of a laugh, a giggle, or a gasp. Using a minimal contrast of colors to create a tone on tone effect, I’ve juxtaposed the subtleness of the color combinations with the coarseness of the text, and as a final comment or “last word”, on the side of each work, I’ve hidden a whisper of text, ‘c'est toi’.

Recall This series of small works represent partial memories submerged in the undercurrents of thought, almost a feeling, never making it completely to the surface. I agonize over the colors I create for each piece...like a musician searching for a sound that will resonate exactly as he or she wants it to. Colors (and combinations of colors) are tied to a person’s visual / sense memories in ways that I don’t think anyone can completely grasp. For me, the primacy of painting is color. Color is the inspiration and the resolution. I am certain that is not a unique “philosophy” but I assume my approach to color is uniquely defined by my own aesthetic. For me, color is memory. Color is music. Color is heart. Color is soul. Color is intellect. The actual process begins with transparent, semi transparent and opaque epoxy resin. Both liquid and powdered pigments are used in the medium. When I pour the resin it looks like liquid. When it dries, it still looks like liquid. Each color layer is allowed to fully cure before the next is applied. The layers form a heavily textured appearance. The viscosity of the medium can be manipulated with heat and the timing of the pour. I think of the finished pieces as fluid, liquid sculptures. The glassy transparent and semi-transparent layers allow the viewer to see the evolution of the piece. Perhaps that is what defines my work...this sense that the history of the process is revealed in the final painting. I believe the word pentimento applies. I look at a finished piece and can see its roots, its evolution. I can see the journey I have travelled in painting each image.

State of Mind I'm drawn to abstraction in art because it feels more representative of lifeâ€™s ambiguities than realistic images do. In my photographs I use abstraction to evoke curiosity and question our perception, both literally and metaphorically. The idea is explore how we perceive, and misperceive, our world based on only the fragments of it we can see. Abstractions exploring the interplay of order and chaos comprise much of my recent work including this series, State of Mind. For it, I made many exposures of the draped fabric of Alaskan fishing nets held up to cloudy skies. Singly, each image portrays a momentary state, while several together, with different focal and view points, provide a greater but sometimes even more confusing view of the whole.

Working for many years in black-and-white analog media (i.e., film and silver gelatin), recently she's incorporated color and digital acquisition and printing.
