MYTHICAL COMBAT MASTERY

BLACK MYTH: WUKONG

delivers a flurry of sublime combat & expert boss design

SAVAGE SPIRIT SAGA

Featuring awe-inspiring visuals and flashy, action-packed combat, Black Myth: Wukong immediately pulled me in with its gritty interpretation of the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West. It’s been on my most-expected games list ever since. While the game has always looked like a Soulslike, there’s been some confusion about whether it actually

is like God of War or Devil May Cry. After spending a few hours exploring Black Myth: Wukong’s world and battling countless bosses, I can safely say that the game is something that will appeal to Soulslike fans, but may alienate those hoping for something else. Anyone going into Black Myth: Wukong expecting it to be more God of War or Devil May Cry than Soulslike is in for a rude awakening. While there’s been some insistence that Black Myth: Wukong is not a Soulslike, there’s little differentiating it from other games in the genre, and it absolutely will not be fun for those who prefer traditional character action games.

There are a handful of boss fights in Black Myth: Wukong that will test even seasoned Souls fans’ skills and patience. On the flip side, many Black Myth: Wukong bosses are quite easy. The mini-bosses found in the world can all be beaten without too much trouble, and even some

of the bigger bosses can be taken out fairly quickly. However, the hard bosses serve as giant roadblocks that can leave players stuck for hours, which is not typical of most character action games. Full stop: If you don’t like Soulslikes and the stiff challenge associated with them, you will not like Black Myth: Wukong. The desire to differentiate Black Myth: Wukong from Soulslikes is puzzling, as the game is very clearly trying to imitate FromSoftware’s formula. I fight their way from shrine to

vshrine (Black Myth’s equivalent to bonfires), killing enemies for XP and healing with a gourd that can only be used a limited number of times until it needs to be refilled.... Gourds are refilled by resting at shrines/bonfires, an action that also refills the Destined One’s health and mana and respawns all the enemies in the level. Levels are more linear than they are in FromSoftware’s games, but there is still a maze-like quality to some of them, with branching paths and shortcuts to be found.

The game has a major focus on difficult boss fights where players need to dodge as much as their stamina meter allows in order to avoid being hit. There are no difficulty options, so players are forced to master the game as it is if they hope to succeed. One of the few notable ways it differs from games that embrace the Soulslike label is that Black Myth doesn’t have a gimmick where players can retrieve lost XP if they make it back to the spot where they died. Another way Black Myth differs from most Soulslikes is that players are stuck with basically one weapon throughout the course of the

Journey to the West novel that inspired the game. Even so, players are still tasked with putting together a “build” based on how they choose to level up the Destined One and what stances they place their skill points into. Different stances allow for different heavy attacks, performed by filling up the Focus meter. The lack of weapon variety does hurt the game in the long run, though switching between stances keeps things somewhat fresh for a while. Luckily, there’s an interesting wrinkle that helps Black Myth’s battles stay engaging for longer than they would have otherwise. Spells play a huge part in Black Myth: Wukong’s combat,

with players unlocking a variety of fun spells over the course of the game. I won’t give away all the different spells here, but one lets players immobilize their opponents, freezing them for a short period of time and leaving them wide open to attack. Another lets players summon forth clones of themselves, and another gives players the power to briefly transform into certain enemies, complete with their own move sets.

Each spell in Black Myth: Wukong uses mana and comes with a serious cooldown timer, so using them strategically is key to winning the game’s tougher fights. Besides spells and whacking enemies with the staff, Black Myth: Wukong also lets players briefly summon spirits of certain enemies to unleash a powerful attack. Black Myth has dozens of spirits to collect, with players building up a roster almost like it’s Pokemon. Finding new spirits is always a thrill and testing them out in battle is fun. The spirits can be upgraded, so players should experiment with them all and find which

fit with their playstyle the best. Completing a chapter in Black Myth: Wukong rewards players with access to a brand-new area, though they are still free to return to previous chapters using the shrines, which double as fast-travel points. Players will want to return to previously explored areas to interact with special NPCs that, like in other Soulslike games, often require players to talk to them multiple times to trigger certain events and reveal all the information they have to offer. Some completely optional merchants are easily missed yet vitally important, so people who don’t have pa-

“Enemies are aggressive, bosses are relentless, & you only have a scant few restorative potions to keep you alive”

tience for that Soulslike trope will likely be annoyed by how Black Myth: Wukong handles its NPCs. When everything clicks, Black Myth: Wukong combat almost feels like a dance. Players will dodge out of the way of attacks at the last second, unleash a devastating heavy attack to interrupt their opponent’s next strike, immobilize them, and then maybe unleash a spirit to finally take them out. It can be a lot of fun, but players should brace themselves for serious frustration as well. There is a certain button-mashy nature to the combat that is made apparent in the boss fights, which makes dying and starting from scratch even more tedious than in similar games.

REPETITIVE? EXHAUSTING?

• Wukong’s staff is his sole weapon

• Boss fights are most of the game (at least so far)

• The spaces between bosses are small, and not particularly exciting

• Wukong heals with a single flask limited by uses

• Black Myth has a traditional combo system, with later moves exe cuted by linking heavy attacks into light combos

If the story was anything to care about, this would be an even more annoying problem,... but Black Myth’s story is largely inconsequential. It takes players from one level to the next, introducing them to various characters pulled from Journey to the West, and while there is an overarching story, each chapter also has its tale to tell as well. The dialogue is clunky and the voice acting is unimpressive. But few people play these types of games for the story anyway. Again, Soulslike diehards coming into this likely won’t be bothered by Black Myth’s lacklustre story, but those expecting something like more traditional character action games are going to be disappointed. Black Myth features all kinds of downright bizarre scenes and characters that are a treat to see, brought to life by the game’s mostly-impressive graphics. Certain areas in Black Myth: Wukong look incredible, and the game boasts some awesome animations and eye-catching characters as well. The game is packed with all kinds of memorable boss designs, though many are underwhelming and feel the same. There was one secret boss I found in Black Myth: Wukong that was literally a re-skin of a mini-boss found elsewhere in the chapter, which was a shame, and while many of the game’s bosses are visually distinct, a lot of the actual fights feel the same. This may be due to the Destined One being limited to their staff, but I felt like I had seen everything the combat had

to offer by the halfway point. Perhaps a shorter runtime or more freedom when selecting spells would have staved off the repetition, but as it stands, players can only equip certain spells in certain slots, which seems like an unnecessary limitation that stifles combat possibilities. Combat starts to get tedious around the same time that the level design becomes more engaging. They are a collection of mini-boss fights separated by sparsely populated areas with invisible walls that keep players from venturing off or jumping on platforms that they should otherwise clearly be able to reach. The level of design in these early stages does not leave a good first impression.... Later chapters have significantly increased scope and are more interesting, with more to see and do between the boss fights, though they perhaps suffer from going on a little too long. Black Myth: Wukong is a game that shies away from the Soulslike label, yet it is clearly gunning for the Soulslike audience. It is far from the best in the genre, but it’s also not the worst game that has followed in Dark Souls’ footsteps. If you go into it expecting a mostly standard Soulslike experience with some blood-boiling boss encounters mixed in with basic level design, you will have a better time than if you were going into it expecting it to be like a traditional character action game. Black Myth: Wukong offers about 30 hours of gameplay for its first playthrough with a ton of side content.

You could blast through Black Myth: Wukong as a 20hour boss rush, but you could also spend over 40 hours hunting down every boss, collectible, and NPC. A full half of the game is in the margins. I gave myself time to backtrack, and I’m glad I did, but as I reflect on Black Myth: Wukong, it can be incredibly frustrating on occasion, but it’s an overall rock-solid action RPG with dozens of fantastic bosses in an absorbing, refreshingly weird world. More than action RPGs like it, Black Myth is a game about running away. When I’d exhausted my mana, the only thing between me and a trip back to the respawn shrine was the O button—dodge, dodge, roll, dodge, roll. A perfectly timed dodge (signalled by Wukong moving so fast he leaves an afterimage) creates openings for combos, but even Black Myth’s early bosses loved to change up their timing just as I’d tuned my thumb to their rhythm. Bosses also do this “fun” thing where they barely telegraph their strongest attacks, all but ensuring learning attack patterns comes with a blood cost. Wukong can jump, but I failed to find a single use for it outside combat.

+ Some incredible boss fights with impressive designs

+ When combat clicks, it can be a lot of fun

+ Absolutely stuffed with content for those willing to look for it

+ Delivers on spectacle and has some eye-popping areas to explore

The Black Wind Forest is fairly flat,... and the areas I scoured were straightforward and sparse. I suspect that means the spaces between boss fights will be the lowlights of Black Myth—a bummer for those who were hoping for a “proper” soulslike out of Wukong—but that has its advantages, too. Again, those sparse funnels of enemies are really easy to run past on your way to a boss fight. As far as I can tell, Black Myth is one long boss rush. No fuss, all fight.... Black Myth: Wukong’s story is somewhat of a follow up to the classic novel Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en, a book that I only personally know thanks to very loose adaptations like Dragon Ball and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West. That surface-level familiarity didn’t help much though, as the interpretation that the developers at GameScience have crafted here is laden with references to characters and events from the novel without doing a great job of bringing you up to speed on who Sun Wukong is or what he encountered on his titular journey. I had to look online to understand who Zhu Bhajie was, what his history with Wukong is, and what the significance of certain encounters were, because otherwise I’d have been completely lost at times. You play as The Destined One, a literal monkey who wakes up one morning and decides to set out on a roughly 40-hour journey to locate the six relics of Wukong. While the moment-to-moment storytelling is fairly unremarkable –largely due to a mute protagonist and side characters.

My initial read on Wukong was that it was a soulslike, given the checkpoint system, the stamina bar that governs your actions in combat, and the dodge-heavy fighting style. But as it turns out, Wukong has more in common with traditional action games like what you might expect from Bayonetta developer PlatinumGames than it does with anything FromSoftware has made. Most of the usual soulslike conventions are missing: There is no penalty for death outside of respawning at the nearest checkpoint (no corpse run is required to regain your loot); you don’t use a shared currency to level up your stats and purchase items or upgrades; and while there is gear and stats to consider, you largely just go and swap out the old equipment with the new as opposed to making choices as to what kind of weapon or piece of

armor you want to hold on to and upgrade. And even though I’m a big fan of soulslikes, ditching those mechanics feels like the right move for the game that Wukong is trying to be. It’s far more forgiving, focused on keeping you in the action rather than poring over menus or retracing your steps to regain your lost currency after dying, and Wukong is a better, more distinctive game for it. Its story has its moments but relies a bit too much on having prior knowledge of the events of Journey to the West, and it really could have used a map to make its rewarding exploration measure up to the strength of its combat. That said, its strengths more than carry it through, making Black Myth: Wukong a great action game that could be even greater if GameScience can squash the bugs.

THE LAST OF US

When The Last of Us (TLOU) debuted on the PlayStation 3 in 2013, it redefined storytelling in video games. While it showcased impressive visuals for it’s time, it’s true achievement was in blending emotional depth with gameplay. Instead of focusing solely on a typical zombie apocalypse, the game centered on the bond between Joel and Ellie, with their relationship taking precedence over the setting. The powerful opening

set the tone, immersing players in a deeply emotional narrative that is carried throughout the game. It’s storytelling impact continues today, and the HBO adaptation has brought the narrative to an even wider audience, cementing video games as a medium for meaningful stories. The show won eight awards at the 75th Creative Arts Emmys in 2023, including recognition for acting and visual effects. By 2024, The Last of Us fan communities remain highly engaged, with

platforms like Reddit and Discord serving as hubs for discussions, fan content, and events. The ongoing success of both the game and the series has reshaped how people view video games, showing that they can deliver emotionally resonant stories while bridging the gap with mainstream culture.

A gripping tale of survival and sacrifice in a world ravaged by a deadly pandemic

THE elder scrolls

Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls series takes a lot of inspiration from realworld cultures, evident in its lore and the various playable races. For instance, Skyrim’s Nords are clearly influenced by Scandinavian and Viking traditions, while the Imperials resemble ancient Romans, and the Bretons reflect medieval British and Celtic cultures. This blending of real history and fantasy adds to the immersive world of Tamriel.

The series has had a significant cultural influence, sparking fanmade stories, books, and even academic studies that explore its mythological and philosophical themes. The Elder Scrolls games have also prompted discussions about how video games shape modern storytelling. Official novels like Greg Keyes’ The Infernal City and Lord of Souls further enrich the lore by offering deeper insights into the game’s universe. In-game books aren’t just

decorative but also boost player skills, merging gameplay with storytelling. By 2024, The Elder Scrolls series, especially Skyrim, remains highly acclaimed, earning numerous awards and maintaining a strong cultural presence. Its ability to blend non-linear gameplay with rich narrative depth continues to make it a standout in the world of gaming.

Dive into a rich, immersive fantasy world where your choices shape the fate of Tamriel.

GRAN TURISMO

Gran Turismo transformed the racing game genre by introducing a highly realistic 3D driving simulator on home consoles in since 1997, featuring licensed cars that players could easily connect with. It quickly became a standout title for the original PlayStation, setting new standards for the genre and merging gaming with realworld automotive culture. The game’s realistic mechanics inspired car fans and even professional drivers.

The release of the Gran Turismo movie, which tells the story of Jann Mardenborough’s journey from gamer to professional racer through the Gran Turismo Academy, expanded the game’s reach. The film received accolades at both the Game Awards 2023 and Equinox Awards 2023 for its successful adaptation.

Within the gaming community, Gran Turismo remains a cornerstone of online racing, with fans competing in tournaments and discussing strategies on

online forums like GTPlanet. Its detailed driving mechanics and customization options make it appealing to both casual gamers and serious racing enthusiasts. senua's saga: hellblade ii

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II released in 2024 throws players right into the experience, and beyond that, it is one of the most atmospheric and culturally immersive games to hit the market. This sequel is a further development of thrill about putting its protagonist, the warrior Senua, into a fight with issues of her mental health and various threats in bleak scenery. It uses myths intensively but interlinks them with the story of Senua, which makes the whole storyline of the game

quite intense and on the edge of emotions.

The most notable representation goes to mental health, since the game is perceptive to the modern truths concerning abuse and healing, on which myths are told. This has encouraged very important discussions around mental health, especially in the mass media, with some considering it as making one step in front in narrative progression. The fan community is highly active: it discussed many nuances of the

game, such as mythological subtext and theories that would help them understand the story better. The game has not only captivated players with its rich narrative but also set a new standard for how video games can address complex psychological and cultural themes.

The cultural impact of the game God of War is very voluminous and dear to the hearts of fans of mythology and action games.

With its upcoming PC release on September 19, controversies over narrative elements and historical or mythological fidelity resurface, reigniting passion for revisiting the game’s world. Having already picked up a raft of awards including Best Performance for Christopher

Spotlight Hades II a Mythic sequal

Dive back into the underworld with Hades II, where ancient gods, relentless battles, and a mythic journey await

Imagine a realm where the gods themselves are your enemies and the stakes are nothing less than the fabric of existence. That’s exactly where Hades II takes you. The original Hades captured the players with its dynamic rogue-like gameplay and richly woven narrative set in the Greek underworld. As the shadows of the underworld stir once again, Hades II invites you to dive deeper into this mythological maelstrom. With Melinoë stepping into the spotlight, players are thrust into a high-stakes battle against Chronos, the relentless god of time. The new innovative myths and characters has set the stage for another legendary adventure. But can Hades II capture the same magic that made

the original a cult hit, or will it forge its own path through the annals of Greek legend?

Ready to challenge the gods

Combat: Still Addictive

The fast-paced, rogue-like combat that defined Hades returns in Hades II, being as engaging as ever. With new weapons and

abilities to experiment with, the game encourages different playstyles. However, if you were hoping for a major overhaul, you might be disappointed. The core gameplay remains largely the same, which might feel repetitive for those who spent countless hours in the first game, but may as well be good news for those who enjoyed the gameplay mechanics of the original one.

A Feast for the Senses—

But Can It Surprise You?

Both visually and sonically, Hades II is a treat. The game continues the hand-drawn art style that made the original stand out, with highly detailed environments and characters that burst with life (or death, as the case may be). The

Evolution of the Underworld

Hades (2020)

Players control Zagreus, son of Hades, in a roguelike dungeon crawler focused on escaping the Underworld with fast-paced combat, rich storytelling, and evolving narratives. It’s known for its blend of Greek mythology and modern elements, with high replayability and character-driven interactions.

Hades II (2024)

The sequel shifts focus to Melinoë, another child of Hades, offering new realms, challenges, and a deeper lore. It builds on the original with enhanced visuals, more gods, and a greater emphasis on player choice, aiming to expand the world while maintaining the core mechanics of the first game.

vibrant color palette and fluid animations are complemented by Darren Korb’s electrifying soundtrack, which mixes orchestral grandeur with rock intensity. Every clash of weapons, every whispered secret, and every victorious moment is underscored by sound and visuals that are as harmonious as they are dynamic. However, much like the gameplay, the aesthetic and auditory experience treads familiar ground.

While the art and music are undeniably beautiful, they closely follow the blueprint laid out by the original. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but for returning players, the lack of significant evolution in these areas might make Hades II feel more like an expansion than a true sequel.

Performance: Smooth Sailing, But Some Déjà Vu

Technically, Hades II is polished,

with smooth performance across platforms. However, the game’s procedural generation can sometimes lead to repetitive level designs, which might make some runs feel too similar. While it’s not a dealbreaker, it does contribute to the overall sense of déjà vu. The game does however make up for the repetitiveness with its stunning environment and attention to detail.

Should You Dive Back In?

Absolutely.

Hades II takes everything that was great about the original and cranks it up to eleven. With its captivating story, exhilarating combat, and jaw-dropping visuals, it’s a game that demands your attention. Whether you’re a returning fan or a newcomer to the series, Hades II is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Fated Duel - Cloud and Sephiroth stand off in a moment of destiny.

Elden ring Shadow of the erdtree

Descend into Darkness: Shadow of the Erdtree Expands

Elden Ring’s World with Haunting New Depths

Shadow of the Erdtree pulls players back into the dark, expansive world of Elden Ring, offering a continuation that promises to deepen the lore and heighten the challenge. FromSoftware has a reputation for crafting experiences that are as beautiful as they are brutal, and this expansion is no exception. With the shadow of the Erdtree casting a long and ominous presence, players are invited to explore the untold stories and hidden horrors that lie beneath its twisted roots. But does Shadow of the Erdtree live up to the legendary status of its predecessor?

Story: Darker and Deeper Than Ever

In Shadow of the Erdtree, the story takes an even darker turn, delving into the more mysterious and sinister aspects of the Lands Between. The narrative is less about grand quests and more about uncovering the forgotten and forbidden secrets of this world. The Erdtree’s shadow looms large over the story, representing the growing darkness and corruption that threatens to consume everything. Players will encounter new characters, each with their own

tragic stories and motivations, adding layers of complexity to the already rich lore of Elden Ring

The story is conveyed through a combination of environmental storytelling, cryptic dialogue, and the discovery of lore-rich items. Shadow of the Erdtree doesn’t just continue the story of Elden Ring—it expands and deepens it, adding new dimensions to the game’s already intricate mythos.

Gameplay: A Test of Skill and Strategy

The expansion introduces new enemies that are more cunning and formidable, requiring players to adapt their strategies and push their skills to the limit. Combat remains fluid and responsive, with a focus on timing and precision that fans of the series will be intimately familiar with. The addition of new weapons, armor sets, and abilities expands the tactical possibilities, allowing for even greater customization of your character’s build.Exploration in Shadow of the Erdtree is as crucial as ever, with hidden paths, secret bosses, and lore-rich items waiting to be discovered. The world design encourages players to venture off the beaten path, rewarding curiosity with both treasures and challenges.

The expansion also introduces new mechanics that add depth to the gameplay, though they are seamlessly integrated so as not to overwhelm players. Whether you’re a veteran of Elden Ring or a newcomer drawn in by the expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree offers gameplay that is both familiar and refreshingly new.

Visuals: A Hauntingly Beautiful Nightmare

Shadow of the Erdtree delivers an atmosphere that is both captivating and unsettling. The world is drenched in dark, moody tones, with the Erdtree’s shadow enveloping the lands in a foreboding gloom. The new environments introduced in this expansion are richly detailed, from the eerie forests to the desolate ruins. Each area is meticulously crafted, creating a world that feels alive yet haunting. The visual storytelling is as strong as ever, with every shadow and beam of light contributing to the sense of dread that permeates the game. Shadow of the Erdtree takes the stunning art direction of Elden Ring and amplifies it, creating a visual experience that is both breathtaking and terrifying.

Performance: Smooth

Sailing in the Shadows

FromSoftware has clearly optimized Shadow of the Erdtree to ensure it runs smoothly on both current and nextgen consoles. The expansion maintains a steady frame rate even in the most intense battles, with minimal load times that keep the immersion intact.
