Decades later, the same generation that visited Bahrain Marina as kids is coming back with their own kids.
There are places in Bahrain that live in our collective memory. Places where childhood summers were spent, where families gathered on weekends, where the simple joy of being by the water brought everyone together. Bahrain Marina was one of those places. A few decades ago, this waterfront was Bahrain's beating social heart. Families would pack picnics, children would play until sunset, and the community would simply be together. Building a Learning Institution An exclusive conversation on the vision for the American University of Bahrain with Dr Wafa Almansoori

The Higher Education Council has established a national plan to guide institutions towards greater innovation, relevance, and agility that meets market needs.
merican writer Alvin Toffler once said: "The illiterate of the 21st century will not be the one who cannot read and write, but the one who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn." During our recent conversation, Dr Wafa Almansoori, the American University of Bahrain’s Interim President and Provost, she made it a point to reiterate Toffler’s words. According to Dr Almansoori, opportunities unfold for every graduate when they’re more willing to learn, unlearn, and relearn. Dr Almansoori has spent a lifetime working in the Kingdom's higher education sector. Her contributions are wide-ranging. She helped establish Bahrain's Quality Assurance Authority whilst building her academic career in Electrical Engineering. As a founding member of AUBH's leadership team, she shaped the university's academic policies and standards, secured international accreditation, and worked closely with the Higher Education Council. In our chat with Dr Almansoori, we discussed what's changed in the higher education space, what students in Bahrain want from their education today, and how her perspective to education has changed as she now leads the university.
What's the most significant shift you're seeing in higher education in Bahrain right now? The most significant shift in education, both in Bahrain and globally, is the focus on outcomes. Students and parents want to understand what skills, competencies, and knowledge they'll gain, not just the qualification title. The Higher Education Council (HEC) has established a national plan to guide institutions towards greater innovation, relevance, and agility that meets market needs. The vision is for Bahrain to become an innovation hub. The Kingdom's wealth lies in its human resources. The Education and Training Quality Authority (BQA) ensures institutions align with national goals through their standards and reviews. Together, the HEC and BQA provide a whole system to elevate universities and drive better performance. Are you seeing changes in what students expect from university compared to a few years ago? Today's students are digital natives who expect far more than classroom instruction. They want relevant, hands-on curricula connected to real life, alongside holistic campus experiences that support

their wellbeing and diverse interests. They're more innovative and questioning than previous generations, highly internationalised, and demand flexibility in learning modes. While they appreciate online options, they recognise humans are social by nature. Online learning complements face-to-face education rather than replacing it.
We must instil flexibility and an entrepreneurial mindset - not all students need to start a business, but they should innovate within any role.
Can you tell me about a recent graduate whose journey stands out to you? What made their story particularly memorable? We've seen remarkably ambitious students, but what truly touches me are those who arrive without a clear direction. Through internships and professional electives, they discover their path. Some even change majors completely. Seeing them grow confident at graduation, willing to take chances - that's the real essence of AUBH. These stories show students that uncertainty is absolutely fine. Things unfold as long as you can learn, unlearn, and relearn. You've been part of AUBH since its founding, but now you're leading it. What looks different from the President's chair? I joined AUBH early enough to help establish academic systems, accreditation, and quality standards. I discovered I love startups. Previously, I focused on ensuring efficient operations. Now, as president, it's about the bigger picture: where AUBH is heading, how we'll grow our community role, and our regional and international recognition. I'm looking at long-term

direction, understanding today's decisions will impact where we'll be in five years. Given your experience in the field, what are the non-negotiables that institutions must focus on to better support graduates entering today's workforce? Quality academic programs and learning experiences are non-negotiable. The curriculum is the backbone. We must instil flexibility and an entrepreneurial mindset - not all students need to start a business, but they should innovate within any role. Universities might prepare students for their first job, but preparing them for their careers is more important. Finally, learning is holistic: it encompasses education, wellbeing, mental health, and creating a genuine sense of belonging. What are your next priorities as you step into this role? What do you want AUBH to be known for within Bahrain and outside? I want AUBH to be known for graduating innovative, free-thinking, flexible graduates who value community and lifelong learning. But we need to be a learning institution ourselves. Staff, faculty, and the institution need to embrace continuous learning. My hope is for AUBH to provide a learning environment not just for students, but for our entire community. n

Between Two Seas An Island Kingdom's journey through time
E
ver wondered how Bahrain got its name? It comes from the Arabic word "bahr", meaning sea, and it's brilliantly fitting. This island kingdom sits between two seas, just 24 kilometres off Saudi Arabia's eastern coast and a short hop from Qatar's northwestern shores.
However, Bahrain's story extends far deeper than its geography. Positioned at the crossroads of ancient trade routes

between Mesopotamia and the Indian subcontinent, this tiny archipelago has always played an outsized role in history.
The Centre of Everything
Wind the clock back to 5000 BC, and you'll find Bahrain cradling the Dilmun Civilisation, one of the Middle East's oldest cultures and a knowledge powerhouse that shaped early human understanding across countless fields.
Ever wondered how Bahrain got its name? It comes from the Arabic word "bahr", meaning sea, and it's brilliantly fitting.
Fast forward a few millennia, and Bahrain - then known as Tylos - became legendary for something else entirely: pearls. The oyster beds off the island's northern coast produced some of the Gulf's finest natural pearls from at least the 3rd century BC right through to the early 20th century.
From Pearls to Prosperity
Islam arrived early here, and Bahrain remained under Islamic rule until Portuguese forces swept in from 1521 to 1602. The Safavid Persian Empire then took control until 1783, when the Al Khalifa family began their rule. Their descendants still lead the country today. Between 1810 and 1923, Bahrain earned its affectionate nickname, "Pearl of the Gulf," and with good reason. By 1877, pearls accounted for three-quarters of the kingdom's total exports. Initially shipping to Bombay (now Mumbai) and Turkey, Bahraini pearls soon caught Europe's

attention in the 1900s. Between 1900 and 1912, export values multiplied sixfold as merchants from India, Paris, London, and New York all competed to secure the finest pearls straight from the source.
A Modern Kingdom on the World Stage
In 1932, Bahrain became the first Gulf state on the Arabian side to discover oil. In 2002, the kingdom became a constitutional monarchy with a democratically elected parliament, marking a new era of reform and opportunities. Today, as Bahrain works towards its Vision 2030, the kingdom continues to show its strength across multiple areas. In 2004, Bahrain International Circuit became the Middle East's first motorsports arena, hosting the region's inaugural Formula 1 race. The kingdom hosted the 33rd Arab League Summit in 2024 and plays an active role on international councils, reinforcing its position on the geopolitical stage. With world-class sporting events and cultural initiatives in its ever-eventful calendar, Bahrain remains as influential as ever. From ancient civilisation to modern kingdom, Bahrain continues to write its story. n

26th Gulf Cup
Bahrain’s National Football Team returned to the Kingdom with a historic victory in the 26th Gulf Cup hosted by Kuwait.
Al Munther Launched
Bahrain made a giant leap on 15 March as its first locally built satellite, Al Munther, launched into space aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9. The satellite, responsible for capturing and analysing imagery of Bahrain and its territorial waters, was developed by the Bahrain Space Agency.
24 Years of the National Action Charter On 14 February, HM King Hamad celebrated the 24th anniversary of the adoption of the National Action Charter, which coincided with the Silver Jubilee of HM the King’s accession to the throne.

It takes you back in time. Hawa Al Manama transforms the historic market into a nostalgic journey through Bahrain's retro days. The narrow alleys where you'd normally browse spices and gold become stages for vintage memorabilia and old-school entertainment. Think classic shop displays, traditional music styles, and those yesteryear cars that defined the souq decades ago.

Revisit Muharraq's Historic Streets When was the last time you wandered through streets with innumerable stories to tell? Throughout December, the Muharraq Nights Festival transforms the entire UNESCO-listed Pearling Path into an evening celebration of art, music, and heritage. This isn't a roped-off festival venue. From Bu Maher Fort to the Pearling Museum, the historic neighbourhood becomes a living stage. You're exploring genuine heritage sites activated with performances, exhibitions, and cultural programmes.
What You'll Discover?
Art installations tucked into traditional houses. Musical performances in open courtyards. Design pieces that play with centuries-old architecture. Food stalls offering local flavours. Dedicated programmes for children if you're bringing the family. The guided tours are worthwhile. These aren't stuffy history lessons but familyfriendly walks revealing the stories behind the buildings. Who lived there? What happened in that courtyard? You get context that makes everything more meaningful. Drop in for an hour or spend the whole evening. While some plan their route around specific exhibitions, others prefer wandering and discovering naturally. Both approaches work.
Why Muharraq Matters
For centuries, this was Bahrain's capital and the Gulf's pearl diving heartbeat. When pearls were the region's currency, this is where it happened. Those narrow alleyways and historic houses aren't reconstructions. They're authentic, rooting the rapidly modernising island to its heritage and historic past. Walking through the narrow alleys and courtyards of the Pearling Path feels like stepping through a history book. For one month, the festival adds contemporary

The manufacturer used the platform to highlight its Sonderwunsch and Exclusive Manufaktur personalisation programmes, unveiling the first Factory Re-Commission project involving a Cayenne alongside a bespoke Panamera Turbo. The displays underscored Porsche's push into highmargin customisation services. Motorsport representation included the 963 RSP, 911 GT3 R Rennsport, 917/30, 962 and 911 GT3 Cup in a dedicated Raceborn zone, reinforcing the brand's competition credentials.
Cultural Crossover
In a notable departure from traditional automotive events, Porsche collaborated with Kasing Lung, creator of the Labubu character. Lung unveiled a limited collector's edition King Mon figure in Dubai, alongside an art car featuring Labubu at the wheel. The collaboration marked 10 years of The Monsters and 60 years of the 911 Targa simultaneously.

Phantom Centenary Edition Rolls-Royce’s Phantom Centenary Edition celebrates the marque’s 100-year anniversary.

olls-Royce is marking 100 years of its Phantom with a very special edition that pushes bespoke luxury to new extremes. Only 25 examples of the Phantom Centenary Private Collection will be made, each representing over 40,000 hours of craftsmanship. The star of the show? A Spirit of Ecstasy figurine cast in solid 18-carat gold and plated in 24-carat gold for a perfect, tarnish-proof finish. It’s the first time Rolls-Royce has created the bonnet mascot in solid gold, and it’s been specially hallmarked at London’s Assay Office with a unique ‘Phantom Centenary’ stamp.

A Paint Job That Takes You Back to Hollywood’s Golden Age
The exterior nods to the 1930s, when Phantoms were the car of choice for Hollywood royalty. It features a striking two-tone paint scheme: Super Champagne Crystal over Arctic White on the sides, and Super Champagne Crystal over Black up top. Even the famous ‘RR’ badges get the gold treatment, finished in 24-carat gold and white enamel for the first time. The Phantom disc wheels are engraved with 25 lines each, one for every car in the collection. That’s 100 lines in total across the set.
Inside: A Tapestry of Phantom History
The interior is where things get really interesting. The rear seats draw inspiration from the legendary 1926 ‘Phantom of Love’, which featured handwoven Aubusson tapestries. Here, the story unfolds across three layers: high-resolution prints showing historical locations and artefacts, detailed illustrations of iconic Phantoms, and hand-drawn embroidery representing seven significant owners from different generations. When asked about smaller elements that add the refining touches to the Phantom, Domagoj Dukec - Director of Design, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars said: "RollsRoyce isn't about noise or loud details. We put considerable effort into subtle elements you might not immediately recognise - faceted knobs, saddle-like surfaces, hidden compartments. It's about
creating something different but graceful, never shouting. True luxury means attention to detail even where it's not obvious, delivering an elevated, bespoke experience." The embroidery alone uses more than 160,000 stitches, spread across 45 individual panels that had to be precisely fitted around the seat contours. The front seats feature laser-etched leather with hand-drawn artwork that includes some clever Easter eggs. There’s a rabbit (nodding to “Roger Rabbit,” the codename for Rolls-Royce’s 2003 relaunch) and a seagull (the codename for the 1923 Phantom I prototype). Above, the Starlight Headliner contains 440,000 stitches depicting moments from Phantom’s history, including a reference to the mulberry tree where founder Henry Royce was photographed with his colleagues. “The Rolls-Royce Phantom Centenary Private Collection is our tribute to 100 years of the world’s most revered luxury item. This extraordinarily ambitious Collection introduces new techniques and is the result of over 40,000 hours of work, culminating in a motor car which reaffirms Phantom’s status as a symbol of ambition, artistic possibility, and historical gravitas,” said Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars The 77 hand-sketched motifs woven throughout the car tell Phantom’s centurylong story whilst pointing to its future. he inaugural Royal Bahrain Concours brought 90 of the world's most exceptional collector cars to the Royal Golf Club this November, alongside 300 more from GCC-based clubs. And what a debut it was. The star? The 1996 Koenigsegg CC prototype. The very first Koenigsegg ever built. The car that made people take a 22-year-old Swedish entrepreneur seriously when he said he could compete with Ferrari and Lamborghini.

That stunning metallic bronze finish? Complete accident. Christian von Koenigsegg wanted bright burnt orange, but a miscommunication with the painter gave us automotive history instead. The car itself became automotive folklore until collector Gaurav Dhar spent four years hunting it down through forums, archives, and networks of Koenigsegg engineers. He finally found it at Motala Museum in Sweden, then had members of the original 1990s team oversee its restoration. The American classics brought serious heat too. The 1955 Lincoln Indianapolis, with its aircraft-inspired design and glass canopy, caused a sensation when it debuted in Turin. Then there's the Cord L-29 Cabriolet, flawless in Navahoe Red and Black. "The Royal Bahrain Concours is about celebrating automotive innovation and the visionaries who dared to dream," said event Chairman James Brooks-Ward. The Kingdom just planted itself firmly on the global concours calendar. n

Cadillac’s Best Ever Lineup The American marque unveils comprehensive SUV range as GCC electric market accelerates

adillac pulled the wraps off an ambitious five-vehicle lineup in October, marking its most aggressive regional push in years as the American luxury marque attempts to capitalise on the GCC's rapidly growing electric vehicle market. The launch saw the brand introduce the OPTIQ, LYRIQ, VISTIQ, ESCALADE IQ and ESCALADE IQL, spanning entry-level to fullsize SUV segments in what represents a comprehensive portfolio refresh for the 120-year-old nameplate.
Strategic Timing

The timing appears strategic. According to the Roland Berger Charging Index 2025, the GCC has become one of the fastestgrowing regions for electric vehicles, whilst the UAE luxury car market alone hit $4.45 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $7.67 billion by 2034.
Five Distinct Propositions
Each model targets distinct buyer segments. The OPTIQ serves as the entry point, aimed at tech-focused urban drivers. The LYRIQ, a mid-size SUV, includes a LYRIQ-V variant that Cadillac claims is its fastest model ever. The threerow VISTIQ targets performance-minded families, whilst the ESCALADE IQ offers what the brand says is the longest range of any SUV in its class. The ESCALADE IQL rounds out the range with emphasis on cargo capacity and second-row space, clearly pitched at family
buyers prioritising practicality alongside luxury. "Each vehicle has been created to cater to a wide spectrum of drivers, from loyal Cadillac enthusiasts to a new generation seeking bold design, advanced technology and refined performance," Elkhishin added.

Dubai in Action Nick Cooksey caught the final days of the Dubai Fitness Challenge
I
managed to catch the last few days of Dubai Fitness Challenge in November, and it completely exceeded my expectations. The month-long festival, initiated by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, challenges everyone to complete 30 minutes of exercise daily for 30 days. Even joining for just the final stretch, I could feel the energy throughout the city. The signature events were absolutely unmissable. I watched Dubai Ride transform Sheikh Zayed Road into a massive cycling track, while Dubai Run brought thousands together to stride past the city's most iconic landmarks. The atmosphere was electric.
The Hatta Dam Highlight
My absolute highlight was Hatta Dam, where I tried Dubai Stand Up Paddle against a breathtaking mountain backdrop. The time on the water was genuinely amazing - the dam is stunningly beautiful and being surrounded by those mountains while paddling was incredible. I'll be honest, the queues were quite

long and did cut into my exploration time, but the experience itself made the wait worthwhile. Dubai Yoga was also running sessions in this gorgeous natural setting, perfect for connecting mind and body. For adventure seekers, the Hatta Wadi Hub at Hatta Resorts offers 20 unlimited access activities including ziplining, archery, axe throwing and wall climbing.
Back in the City
The 30x30 Fitness Villages at Kite Beach, Zabeel Park and Al Warqa Park offered free daily workouts and family-friendly activities. I appreciated how accessible everything was, with expert-led sessions for all fitness levels. Community Fitness Hubs scattered across Dubai expanded the options even further.
Dubai Yoga was also running sessions in this gorgeous natural setting, perfect for connecting mind and body.
I stayed at Vida Dubai Mall (@vidahotels), which proved incredibly convenient - the mall itself served as an excellent walking venue during the challenge. Traditional Qatari market with handicrafts, heritage activities, and proper local food. Actually decent for souvenirs that don't look like they came from every other tourist shop.

The 15th Katara Traditional Dhow Festival shows off the wooden dhows that our grandparents' generation would have known well. Pearl diving, trading, and fishing. It's shared Gulf heritage, honestly.

or those of us living in Bahrain, Oman is in the immediate vicinity. It's one of those convenient escapes that never gets old. A quick flight lands you in an entirely different world, and after spending a few days exploring Muscat and Jebel Akhdar, I'm reminded why it's a trip every traveller must take at some point solo or with a squad.

Muscat's Cultural Heart
Oman reveals itself slowly, and that's part of its charm. The Royal Opera House sets the tone with its architectural statement. What struck me is how it sits so naturally in the landscape, a modern tribute to Oman's long relationship with the arts. The National Museum follows a similar thread, offering genuine insight into the country's history through exhibits that feel thoughtfully curated rather than rushed. Muttrah Souq is where things get sensory. The frankincense fills the air, and the narrow corridors wind past stalls selling everything from traditional knick-knacks to intricate silver jewellery. It's touristy, but it's also genuinely functional, a place where locals still shop for spices and textiles. Dinner at Rozna Restaurant rounded off the Muscat experience with authentic Omani cuisine that felt simple and celebratory.
Into the Mountains
Jebel Akhdar was a revelation. The drive up Oman's second-highest mountain takes you through landscapes that shift from dusty plains to terraced agriculture clinging to cliffsides. Villages like Birkat Al Mouz and Sowagra feel preserved rather than recreated. The falaj irrigation
systems still function, traditional houses stand testament to centuries-old building techniques, and local life continues at its own pace. Lunch at Sowagra, perched in the mountains, offered more than just views. There's something about eating traditional food in its natural context that makes the experience feel complete. Wandering through the mountain villages of Al Ayn, Al Aqar, and Al Sharyjah gave me a sense of how people have adapted to this dramatic terrain over generations. Nizwa Souq, famously known for its Omani frankincense, Omani daggers, and pottery, felt like an authentic reflection of the Sultanate’s culture, while the 16thcentury Portuguese fort provides context for the region's layered history. For those of us in Bahrain, Oman offers the perfect short break. It’s lush, serene, and the perfect break for a long weekend. n
