living la vida las vegas i was walking through the south point casino on my way to the arena on the last day of the arabian breeders world cup in las vegas. a couple walking in front of me were speaking in italian. as we got close to the escalator to go up to the spectator section of the arena, the gentleman asked a security guard, “what is there to see up there?” “the most beautiful arabian horses in the world,” replied the guard. and so there were.

We went in there without a lot of expectations. “It’s been two and a half years since Mostly was last shown (when he was named 2006 U.S, National Top Ten Junior Stallion). We took a no-stress approach to conditioning him, schooling him just once a week for about eight weeks. He was probably as happy as he’d ever been during that process. “The whole experience at Vegas was exciting,” continues Ted. “On Tuesday morning, a Las Vegas newscaster did a live feed off of Mostly’s back, sitting on Wayne Newton’s personal saddle.

he Arabian Breeders World Cup lives up to its name as in three short years it has become the show for the international Arabian horse fraternity. Breeders, handlers, and spectators from the Middle East, North Africa, Australia, Europe, South America, and beyond all gathered together to view some of the finest horses in the world. And perhaps, to drop a few coins in the slots as well. For if there is one thing that is central to the Breeders Cup, it is that everyone should have a good time. One of the event organizers and board member of the Arabian Horse Breeders Alliance (AHBA), Scott Bailey, echoed

That was fun! “We didn’t do anything to wear him out – no longing, no riding. He’s full of life. Maybe a little more life than some judges in the past wanted to see. But we decided that we were just going to let him be who he wants to be in there, and that’s the first time we’ve ever shown him like that. It was great for people to see him the way we see him every day. And to top it off, he was High Point horse of the show. “After his class, so many people came up to us and thanked us for bringing him. I had emails and texts coming in from all over the world. It was amazing. So many people came by the stalls; the guys from Dubai stud visited with us, and the Norths came by – he is so reminiscent of his sire, who the Norths just sold to Belgium. The outpouring of support meant a lot to us.” What’s next for Mostly? No decisions have been made, but Ted did not rule out a European or Middle Eastern show in 2010.

that tenet. “This show is all about having a lot of fun. Even exhibitors who didn’t win — they always come away from the show talking about the great time they had. In fact, the owner of the South Point comes to the show as well — he said it is the best horse show that they host at the facility — he loves it!” There were several changes to the show this year that added a really intimate atmosphere and allowed more interaction between the spectators. All of the seating was on one side of the arena, and the opposite side had beautiful drapes and dramatic lighting that made the arena space seem much more personal 3 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JUNE 2009

and added a nice backdrop to the horses in the ring. The ability of the show committee and AHBA to think on their feet and make changes quickly has paid off. “One of the changes this year was to throw out the high and low score in each category on the judges card for each horse. We did not have one complaint about the judging,” Bailey notes. “Everyone liked the system and agreed that the best horses won the classes.” Other changes included placing the scorecard ladies on an elevated platform with spotlights illuminating each score. Behind each lady was a banner with the name of the judge assigning the

score being displayed, which made it very easy to follow. Finally, there was an inspired and extremely talented bagger — Fernando Poli — located at the opposite end of the arena from the in gate, and stationed behind the shrubbery. Truly, this fellow used a unique double whip system that elevated the horse as it moved toward him and he was sensitive about encouraging the horse as it went past. He seemed to know just how much height and arc for his semaphore style to get the most out of each horse. I’ve seen traffic cops who could learn a lesson or two from him. He never chased the horses or caused them to break, as had been a problem in the past. I’m not a huge fan of bagging because it is generally overdone and does not enhance the horse’s performance, but if you are going to do it, find this guy! The show started on Thursday

morning when over 300 school kids from the Las Vegas area from grades 5 and 6 were seated in the VIP section and treated to demonstrations of Arabian performance horses jumping and doing dressage. All of the kids got gift bags and a great introduction to the Arabian horse. This was all arranged by Steve Schorr, who is to be commended for providing these kids with their first up-close and personal exposure to Arabians. The halter classes on Thursday didn’t start until the afternoon, which is another reason why this show is so much fun. A relaxed judging schedule where the morning classes don’t start until 9:00 a.m. and there are no evening performances. This gives everyone time to schmooze or take in a show or enjoy one of the myriad entertainment options available in Vegas. Relentlyss (First Cyte x Padrons Nike), shown by Jeff Schall, who was the Four Years Old and Older class winner with a score of 318.5 The owner amateur halter classes followed with PA Miss Noon Tyme, a bay daughter of PA Hi-Noon out of Miss Pryme Tyme winning the Junior Fillies Three Years Old and Under ATH Championship with a score of 320. SF Sir Real, a Sir Fames HBV colt, scoring 318, won the Junior Colt Three Years Old and Under ATH Championship. The Senior Stallion Four Years Old and Older ATH Championship was hotly contested with sons of Enzo, *Marwan Al Shaqab, Thee Masterpiece, and *Sanadik El Shaklan all vying for the win. The extremely typey Om El Shahmaan by *Sanadik El Shaklan out of Om El Shaina, shown and bred by Om El Arab International, emerged the victor

with a very respectable 323.5 points. He had presence and charisma to burn as well as being a very strongly built horse with a long square hip and croup. All of the Sanadik horses have the same “look” to them and Shahmaan is a worthy successor to his recently deceased sire. Friday started out with the yearling fillies, who were split into sections based on age. Each class stood alone, however, with its own championship. Among those fillies born between April 16 and December 31, the competition was fierce, as has become standard for this show. Several contenders emerged early, including an elegant, tall, stretchy Versace filly, Bella Versace DH, who moved with a great deal of action. An exotic-headed *Marwan Al Shaqab filly, HRA Miranda, was really well built in the body with a great short, strong back in addition to her excellent type. The first scores of

20 for the show came in this class with the Justify daughter Aria Elita out of *BK Tamina. Her exotic head gained scores of 20 from both judge Gamlin and judge Perroy. The winner, however, was a beautifully put together filly, RD Challs Angel by *Magnum Chall HVP out of *Bey Angel TG. She was tough to fault with a very smooth body, long, level hip, high-set tail and very “hooky” neck. Perhaps a flatter forehead would have suited me better, but overall, she excelled in almost all categories, gaining a total score of 324.5. Yearling fillies from January 1 to April 15 were next with another large 5 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JUNE 2009

group of impressive fillies. This was an exceedingly deep class with a lot of fillies in the 320-point range. Several fillies caught my eye, starting with a chestnut Psytadel daughter bred in Spain by the name of *Valentyna F. A distinctly more European type of filly, with a shorter, but high-set neck, she had a very refined head, and she carried a lot of expression to her face. She had a spectacular body, very smooth with a tremendous square, deep hip, smooth topline, long shoulder, and deep heart girth. Another lovely filly was Novella SF, not listed in the catalog. A bright chestnut with a large white blaze, she was shown by Roldolfo

Guzzo. A very typey head, long, high-set neck, and smooth body made her a very eye-catching filly. She could have been a bit stronger over the loin, but all in all, she made you look. Another striking filly was Mahrnika, by Marhaabah out of Ladi Veronika. I actually had in my notes that her head was exotic and was worthy of a 20 score. Her head was exquisite, very triangular with small muzzle, and large, very expressive eye. She scored several 19s and 19.5s for head, but from the stands, at least, she looked very close to a 20. The winner of this tough class was the Spanish-bred filly *Valentyna F with a score of 324.5. Mahrnika, the Marhaabah filly, was only one half-point behind with a score of 324. Next came the two-year-old fillies born from April 16 to December 31,

2007. A small class, as four fillies listed did not show. Of the remaining six fillies, the champion was Mistic Fame NA, sired by *Sir Fames HBV out of Mistic Dream. The older two-year-olds, born from January 1 to April 15, had eight shown, and the Champion, Om El Excella, by *Al Lahab GASB out of Om El Bint Shaina, deservedly earned a 20 on head from judge Perroy. Her black foretop and mane was in dramatic contrast to her light grey color. She was very strong over her top and had great length and depth of croup and hip. Combine that with her very feminine and dry, typey head, and she quickly rose to the top with a score of 323.5. I was very much looking forward to the Junior Fillies Three Years Old and Under, as those that make it to this age 6 â–Ş ARABIAN HORSE WORLD â–Ş JUNE 2009

and still look good, are well worth paying attention to. It is easy for young fillies to look typey and feminine, as their young bodies and faces are more deer-like at that age. As fillies mature into mares, they can often become too mature and heavy, or fail to maintain the type and structure they held as youngsters. *Abha Palma, by *Marwan al Shaqab out of Abha Ghazali, has been a big winner internationally and made a splash early on, earning a 20 in type from judge Lieblang. A dark, mahogany bay, she came in at a big trot with Michael Byatt, and did an exceptional job of showing. She is a short-backed mare with a powerful hindquarter in addition to her type and femininity. *Abha Palma received the highest score of the show so far with a 331. With only one mare to

go in her class, it appeared that she had the Championship in the bag. *Layan Al Khalediah, by Dakharo out of Padrons Amour, was the last to go. Shown by Greg Gallún, *Layan Al Khalediah, a beautiful, smooth bodied mare with loads of type and charisma, also scored a 331. When there is a tie, the tie is broken on type scores. With a 20 for type from judge Lieblang, it seemed that *Abha Palma would emerge victorious.

However, under the new scoring system used at the Breeders Cup, the high and low score in each category is thrown out, thus rendering her 20 useless. *Layan Al Khalediah scored higher in type with the remaining scores and therefore was named Champion, with *Abha Palma taking Reserve. Eleven four- and five-year-old mares ended up being one of the most exciting classes, but for the wrong reason. The 7 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JUNE 2009

the ground. *Emandoria broke free but was quickly caught. Greg was slow to get up and it was clear that he was badly injured. However, he put his game face on and finished the class. Fortunately they were on their final trot when the accident happened. The kick was not malicious on *Emandoria’s part, but could be catastrophic for Greg, as he had two more days of showing to go, with his most important classes yet to come. *Emandoria earned a 20 score for her head from judge Perroy and emerged as the Champion of the class with a new high score for the show of 332. “After I stood up, I wasn’t sure I could walk,” said Greg. “Yet all things happen for a reason. I had to show another mare, and although she didn’t require a big run, the knee was getting worse. The Board of Directors of AHBA made the decision that Rafael Curti, my assistant, could trot my horses and I could stand the horses up.” So what started out as a disaster turned golden: as Rafael did such a good job, Greg asked the owners of Embra if they were all right with Rafael showing the mare for the entire class. “I knew he could run, but I didn’t know he could run that fast!” Greg laughed. “It was a case of being in the right place at the right time — he did a great job and I couldn’t be happier at the way things turned out.

“Having both of these Polish mares standing Champion and Reserve was very special,” Greg continued. “I’m sure there was a big celebration in Poland when they got the news — I’m just sorry that they weren’t able to be at the show to accept the award. The people of Poland have a genuine affection for their horses — even people who don’t own horses. They come to the shows and take real pride in these horses that are such a part of their history and culture. What a great honor it is for them to have these two mares win and for Michalow to be awarded the Breeder’s Cup for this show.” The Six- to Eight-Year-Old Mare Championship was won by *Martina Van Ryad, bred in Brazil by Ryad El Jamaal out of Barbara Van Kaset, with a score of 325. *Martina Van Ryad also gained a perfect score of 20 in the neck/shoulder category from judge Perroy. The class of Senior Mares Nine Years Old and Older was tightly contested for Champion and Reserve between two Padrons Psyche daughters. Psyx Aprilove H out of Bey Shahna KA, just edged out Miss Pryme Tyme (out of Eternel Star) by one-half of a point. Psyx Aprilove H scored 322.5 and Miss Pryme Tyme a 322.

I was avidly awaiting Senior Breeding Mare class — a great class that requires that the mares entered have given birth to, nursed, and weaned at least two foals. Thus, embryo transfer donor mares which maintain much better show condition than broodmares, would not be eligible to compete. At Scottsdale, Embra had really impressed me in the aged mare class although she did not place very high. Perhaps she wasn’t modern enough for that show, but she did herself proud at this one. Scoring a 328.5, she easily won this class, repeating the dramatic floating trot she displayed at Scottsdale. She also scored the most 20s of any horse in the show at this point, gaining perfect scores for movement from every judge except Perroy, who gave her a 19.5. As a daughter of Monogramm, it was not surprising that she could move. However, she is pretty as well as a great mover. Embra was to be shown by Greg Gallún, but given the fact that she needed a handler who could run fast enough to show her trot, Greg wisely allowed Rafael Curti to take the lead and he did an admirable job. It was an extremely satisfying end to Friday’s performance. Saturday would be all about the boys.

The yearling colt classes started out with a bang, as Troubador PA by *Magnum Chall HVP out of Psyches Secret, won the April 16 to December 31 Championship with a high score of 331.5. This tall, elegant chestnut colt showed he had great movement as well as type. He was strong over the top and the hindquarter. I loved his backward tipped ears as well. Reserve Champion with a score of 325.5 was Shelia Varian’s Audacious PS colt Lightning Strikes out of Lalique V. This tall, typey, correct, and good-moving colt won his class in the comparative judging system at Scottsdale in February. It took another very high score to win the January 1 to April 15 Yearling Colt Championship, and the *Magnum Chall HVP colt El Chall WR, out of Major Love Affair, did just that with a score of 330. The two-year-old Colt Championship from April 16 to December 31, 2007, was won by RHR Heir Of Marwan (*Marwan Al Shaqab x LC Psychesheiress) with a score of 321. Stival by *Gazal Al Shaqab out of Paloma De Jamaal created a lot of excitement from the crowd when he garnered two perfect 20s for head from 10 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JUNE 2009

judges Maritz and Lieblang. Stival made a very impressive showing, with a great attitude, thinking very highly of himself. He has an abundance of type, with a beautiful expression to his face, yet retaining his masculinity. He dominated this class, Junior Stallions of 2006, winning with a 331.5, ten and one half points higher than the second-placed Gemini VII (Legacy Of Fame x Precious Legacy). Stival went on to be named Champion Junior Colt. Prior to the class for stallions four and five year old, Jeff Sloan came into the arena to announce that he had Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi on a telephone link-up to the show. Jeff conducted a great interview with Patrick, who everyone is aware is fighting a valiant fight against pancreatic cancer. Patrick and Lisa talked about their love for the Arabian horse, and Jeff announced the establishment of a scholarship called the Patrick Swayze and Lisa Niemi Ambassador Award, which will be presented each year at the Breeder’s cup to a person who exemplifies outstanding ambassadorship in the promotion of the Arabian horse. There were many tears in the audience as they gave Patrick and Lisa a standing ovation when Jeff told them

that the whole Arabian community was on this journey with them. My notes from the class for stallions four and five years old said this about the eventual winner, Om El Beshaan. “He epitomizes Arabian type with the characteristic large, dark, expressive eye typical of the Om El horses — he just exudes type.” He followed that type with a smooth, well-balanced body, and a long, level croup. Om El Beshaan scored a 330.5 The six- to eight-year-old stallion class was quite small, but won handily by ML Mostly Padron, with a new high score of 334. By Padrons Psyche out of HS Mostly, he is inbred *Padron and looks eerily like his grandsire. He gained three 20s for movement from judges Gamlin, Perroy, and Holmes as well as 20s for type and head from judge Lieblang. With five 20 scores, he was the highest-scoring horse of the show so far. As ML Mostly Padron approached the winners circle, handler Ted Carson cued him and he walked on his hind legs just as *Padron used to. It was surreal, and the horse is certainly aptly named. Dakharo was back in the nine- to eleven-year-old stallion

class, to defend his winning record at this show as a younger horse. And defend he did, winning this class with a score of 332.5 He looked much fitter than he did at Nationals, and although he got several 19.5s for type and head, he is a 20 for me in the head department. It was a battle of the Brazilian Champions in the twelve years of age and older stallion class. Although everyone was waiting to see if Magnum Psyche would show, he was entered, but did not show. *El Nabila B, a former Brazilian National Champion Stallion, although bred in Hungary, was up against *Laman HVP, Brazilian-bred and current National Champion Stallion of Brazil. *El Nabila B is a very correct horse in the feet and legs and has the motion to back up that structural correctness, gaining several 19.5 scores for movement. Combined with a very typey head and an extremely strong topline, it was enough to put him at the top of an excellent class with a score of 332. *Laman HVP, a more “American” type of horse that is longer through the body and has a longer neck, is a very smooth-bodied horse who also has lots of type and

This horse not only used the whole arena and put on a great show, but when he was at the far end of the arena opposite the in gate, he delicately stepped over the flower boxes, marking the end of the arena, found nothing of interest there, stepped back over the flower boxes, and continued to show. The opening ceremonies followed with the Flags of Nations. At the first Breeders Cup, the Opening Ceremonies were fantastical — very Cirque du Soleilesque. This year, however, there were no stilt walkers, tightrope twirlers, or fog machines. It was disappointing, as it was part of the whole Vegas atmosphere that made the show so different from other shows. No doubt cost was a factor, understandable in the current economy. However, I hope they reconsider or look

for a lower-cost, but utterly Vegas-type entertainment for the opening ceremonies next year. The Junior Filly Championship was a repeat of the results of the three and under class, with *Layan Al Khalediah winning Supreme and *Abha Palma Reserve. Junior Colt Championship was won by the very popular Stival, with El Chall WR coming in Reserve. Before the Senior Mare and Stallion championships, Wayne Newton was on hand to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Hans Nagel. A highly informative narration by Scott Benjamin, accompanied by a video on the jumbo screen, highlighted the impact and contribution that Dr. Nagel has made to the Arabian breed. He is a worthy recipient and it was nice to have his achievements publicly recognized. Everyone scooted a little closer to the arena when the mares came in for the Supreme Championship. *Emandoria seemed to be the one to beat, and the battle was going to be for the Reserve Championship. When *Emandoria was named Supreme Champion, the crowd voiced their approval. However, when Embra was named Reserve Champion, the stands erupted into wild cheers. For a mare that was in the broodmare class to

prevail against younger and fitter mares was a true breeders choice. In fact, judges Gamlin and Maritz had Embra first on their cards and *Emandoria second. Embra had powered into the ring with her now trademark floating trot, which, I believe went a long way toward her final placement. This gave Michalow a one-two victory in the Senior Mares, and consequently, won the Breeders Cup for 2009. A well-deserved win for the mares and for Michalów. ML Mostly Padron was the horse with the highest score going into the Supreme Championship. He moved powerfully with commanding action as he entered the ring, and it was no surprise when he emerged as the Supreme Champion Stallion, although the win was by no means unanimous. Judge Perroy had him fifth and judge Holmes, third. The Reserve Supreme Champion was Dakharo, who actually had more consistent scores, being placed first or second on all judges cards except judge Gamlin’s, which had him third. “This is one of the best shows of the year,” said Greg Gallún. “The thing I like best about it is that everywhere I would walk, I was talking to people from all over the world: Dubai, Australia, Italy … You can see some of the world’s best horses 14 ▪ ARABIAN HORSE WORLD ▪ JUNE 2009

in a compressed time frame and interact on a social level as well. Scottsdale is a great show, but it is so long — you get a bit of an overload — you almost become a bit numb. It’s hard to remember how a horse looked a week previous when you see it in the Championship. In Las Vegas everything is very fresh and is quite fast paced — it succeeds in its goal to be a European-style show. I have great admiration for the Board of Directors of the AHBA — they have improved the show every year and it runs seamlessly. I take my best horses to this show. The exposure to the world community is excellent — more news comes out of this show than any other during the year with the possible exception of Paris, and my clients want their horses to be at this show. Where in America can you experience an international show with a plane flight of just a few hours?” It was another supremely successful show. The consensus was that the best horses had won, and that consensus came in accents from Australia, Italy, Belgium, Germany, South Africa, Brazil, the United States, and more. Once more, the global Arabian community had come together for a bit of magic and a bit of fun under the neon lights of Las Vegas.
