Shows were few and far between in those early days. The main object was to “fill the class,� ready or not. We owners of Arabians got our collective feet in the door of open shows first, mainly with the gimmick of the costume class, which we played to the hilt, dressed in bedspreads with Turkish towels on our heads, galloping wide open around the ring, dipping sand on the corners. On one occasion Joanne Buckley livened things up considerably, riding barefoot, swathed modestly in yards of chiffon as she shot off blanks from her trusty carbine. The horses that were not already running away joined the group at this juncture.
