LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD MERT SARTRE A horsemen’s horseman, Mert Sartre has been and continues to this day to be one of the longest continuing horse trainers in the Arabian industry. Known well within the professional industry by horsemen from around the country over the last 60 years, Mert’s reputation is that of a quiet, unassuming horseman, one with an honest work ethic and few frills who continues to this day to be an on-going example of the type of person from which today’s professional horsemen’s community grew. Mert’s passion and education with horses started as a boy in Connecticut, where he worked for a local farmer in the 1950’s who did all his work with a team of draft horses, during one of the last decades when horses were still integral tools for man’s survival. After running a riding stable in Moodus, Conn., for Ted Hilton Resorts in the early 1960’s, Mert was hired for his first Arabian job by Bazy Tankersley at her Maryland farm when she answered his ad for a job that he’d placed in Western Horsemen. After his time at Al-Marah Arabians, Mert worked briefly at only two other private jobs. At a time when almost all horsemen were working for large breeding farms with private funding, Mert opened his training business in Connecticut under the banner of Hy-Tyme Stables, representing his family’s decision that it was “high time” they got with it and started their own business. From the comparatively small New England training barn, Hy-Tyme Stables produced national winners across all divisions throughout the next four decades. National championships in Western Pleasure, Formal Driving, Purebred and Half-Arabian Park and Equitation emerged from Sartre’s Ledyard farm. Sartre shepherded horses bred by small breeders or owned by one or two horse owners to National acclaim time after time during an era when tax advantages led wealthy owners to spend vast amounts of money in breeding programs and advertising campaigns to garner National titles. In 1999, Mert and partner Kristie Stevens put the Connecticut farm on the market, and went to work for the Ralph and Sheila Carpinella family in Woodbury, Conn., where their two daughters, Lisa and Marnie, along with Sheila, pursued their passion for the Arabian horse. What Mert thought was going to be a short stop on the way to retirement, found that friendship, shared values and appreciation have kept the team together now for almost eighteen years, where Mert and Kristie still train a small number of horses today. We hope you will join us this evening in honoring a true horsemen’s horseman and a life well-lived within the great community that comprises our Arabian horse world.
