Better Than A Dream
by Caitlin Pigott | e Good Word, Co.
Most breeders have colloquial hopes and dreams for the horses that they bring into the world. But, fewer can say that a literal dream gave them insight to one of their foals. Jeremy Harper is one of the few. Right about early March in 2019, he woke up and told his wife Chelsea about a dream he had. “Heartbreaker’s foal is a colt with four white socks and his name is Redemption.” When that bay colt with four white socks made his appearance a couple weeks later, they were pretty sure he was special. However, to their own admittance, no hope could have been big enough to amount to the joy, success, and pride Redemption HA has brought the Harper family.
Redemption HA (Bentley SF x Heartbreaker RA, by Magnum Psyche) has always been an easy horse. He has a loving and peoplerst personality (more on that later). at mixed with his conformation and natural ability makes his job as a western pleasure horse seamless. His show record with trainer Josh Quintus re ects this truth. e two have been consistently at the top half of their classes, including two reserve national championships and winning the Arabian Western Pleasure Junior Horse at the Scottsdale show as a 4-year-old.
“Josh just understands him,” Chelsea said about her husband’s and family’s longtime friend and trainer. “Josh loves and respects Redemption and Redemption loves and respects Josh back.”
Part of Redemption’s plan has always included Jeremy. Jeremy is no stranger to the Arabian horse community or its competitions. But, as his life unfolded, his responsibilities as husband and dad superseded the ones he felt to himself. When Redemption came along, the whole family – both blood and their family at Colonial Wood – agreed that it was his turn.
“My husband takes a back seat with our nicest horses,” Chelsea shared. “He deserves to have these moments.”
In their two years competing together, Jeremy and Redemption have already created some very memorable moments. ey were Reserve National Champions in the AWPA $15,000 Arabian Western Pleasure
Maturity in 2024 and the Arabian Western Pleasure AAOTR 40-59 in 2025. Everyone’s standout moment (so far) came at the 2025 Mid Summer Nationals when Redemption and Jeremy won the Arabian Western Pleasure AATR Choice.
“ e last time I won, Josh’s hair was still black,” he shared about his 20-year hiatus from the winner’s circle, without missing a chance to poke some fun. “But really, learning Redemption has been so much fun. He is a very easy horse to show. You wear your smile, put your hand down, and stay out of his way.”
In addition to keeping him present and relevant in the show ring, they have also made great e orts in Redemption’s breeding career. Even with their combined 60 years of experience in the Arabian horse industry, this is the rst breeding stallion they bred.
“ e Arabian Western Pleasure Association (AWPA) has created a great avenue for marketing your stallion,” Chelsea shared with gratitude to the program.
One of their favorite memories as breeders so far was when a woman shared that she decided she wanted to breed to Redemption after seeing how he and Josh interacted (with lots of snuggles) after his standup during the AWPA Futurity. eir son Payne took some credit for this as he reminds his parents that Redemption has been falling asleep on his shoulders since day one.
As for the future, they plan to keep things pretty status quo. Josh and Jeremy will continue to show this talented horse as his recognition as a breeding stallion grows. e Harpers are grateful and excited to share that the rst two Redemption foals available for purchase were quickly claimed by two families who can easily spot great western horses – Staci and Bill Callison and Deb and Leon Barber. n

Always A Jullyen V x Sweet Saphire V, by Desperado V Bred & owned by Dr. James Blevins & Kim Butler |South Chesterfield, VA
Suzanne Acevedo and her family farm Acevedo Arabians are making sure that one legendary stallion – Sundance Kid V – can continue bringing new life into the world. is iconic stallion passed away eight years ago, yet his name still sits at the top of many breeding charts. In fact, Sundance Kid V is the #1 leading sire of purebred money earners, with his foals winning a collective $111,565. As a fan of his for many years, Suzanne felt like it was time she chased the opportunity to purchase his remaining frozen straws. Not only is she excited about how this will help her own breeding program, but she sees it as an opportunity for the entire industry to have their piece of history.
“I want to thank Sarah Stone for working with me to make this happen,” Suzanne opens. “I am so excited to see how this helps the industry. And I know Jackie and Colby are just the team to accomplish great things with this.”
In November 2025 – under the direction of Colby Powell Performance Horses – they announced the exciting news that this year there were 10 private breedings available, along with the Scottsdale Signature Stallion (SSS) and Arabian Western Pleasure Association (AWPA) auction breedings. A few of those o erings, including the AWPA breeding, have already been claimed, but interested parties can still reach out to Jackie or Colby Powell to be part of this exciting rst year (with mares bred using the ICSI technique).
“We have had incredible success using ICSI so far,” Jackie shares about their personal and professional experiences. “It allows us to use a deceased stallion to improve a new generation of horses. Also, it is more a ordable than most people think.”
Suzanne also feels a responsibility to keep Sheila Varian’s legacy going through this endeavor. “Her philosophy was so fascinating,” she expresses with admiration. “I really like the look of the western horses she produced. And – in the most current crop of horses – that look is largely thanks to Sundance Kid V.”
Sundance Kid V (Desperado V x Sweet Shalimar V, by Ali Jamaal) has sired 478 registered foals. He was not just a profound breeding stallion, but he also left a mark that will impact every generation of Arabian horse to follow. And now that number can grow thanks to Acevedo Arabians and Colby Powell Performance Horses.
“We’re excited to keep Sundance’s legacy as one of the best western pleasure sires alive,” Colby says. “His excellence across a variety of divisions can’t be denied. Of the horses I have personally ridden that are sired by SDKV, I am most impressed by their trainability, upright necks, and superb movement. A couple that I’ve shown recently include Kids N Roses GRK and CPH Allstarr – both national champions.”
Everyone involved is hoping this brings a new excitement –especially to the western pleasure division – and therefore, the AWPA. Suzanne has been a large supporter of the futurity classes in the past as an owner. She and her husband have even bought horses speci cally to show in that class, because she loves being part of it.
“ ey go above and beyond to make it a special class,” she continues. Now as a stallion owner in the program, it will be fun to see how this passion for the program resonates in a new way.
One of Suzanne’s main goals with this purchase is to help boost the numbers of horses being bred each year. As a lifelong horse lover and ranch kid, she knows how a person’s life can change when horses enter the picture. Her childhood consisted of growing up on a farm in Idaho and frequenting her grandparents’ ranch as well, where she rode their Quarter Horses. She is hoping to create more life-changing moments just like that, for herself and others, with this purchase. n

WELCOME TO THE ARABIAN WESTERN PLEASURE ASSOCIATION
The AWPA is thrilled to be involved in promoting this incredible group of stallions, breeders, trainers, owners and young horses. There are 113 stallions enrolled this year … a record-breaking number! We are so appreciative of each stallion owner who has supported the AWPA. This program is successful thanks to you and the committed mare owners who continue to breed and produce talented Western Pleasure prospects.
The 2026 AWPA Stallion Service Auction will be online through the Arabian Horse Times website March 2nd-3rd. Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction will be eligible for an additional $56,500 in prize money in the 2031 Futurities.
As we look back on 2025, we were immensely proud of the quality of the competition in our four classes. We sent out over $300,000 in prize money last year … our highest payout to date! For the fourth year, the AWPA rewarded the owners of stallions who sired Futurity entries that showed … almost $20,000 was paid out to them.
The Auction Foal Bonus Payout was also significant. The Futurity entries in the Top 14 who were the result of breedings purchased in the 2020 Stallion Service Auction were given a split of the $50,500 reserved monies – $5,858 to each of the five Purebred Auction foals and $2,652 to each of the eight Half-Arabian Auction foals.
As established several years ago, our Top Ten winners took home incredible prizes. Once again, the AWPA Exhibitor Bags were a huge hit, with thousands of dollars’ worth of goodies given to each Futurity entrant. We appreciate everyone who generously sponsored items!
We could not offer the Futurities & Maturities without our partnership with The Richard and Georgiann Ames Foundation and Equine Athlete Veterinary Services. A big THANK YOU to them and to all our sponsors who make these classes so special:

We aim to continue the growth of the program in the years to come, and look forward to another incredible year!
There are 113 stallions enrolled with the AWPA for 2026 - the largest number of nominations in the history of the program! Many are offering both Purebred and Half-Arabian breedings in the March Auction. See who is the best match for your mare at arabianwesternpleasure.com! Auction hosted by Arabian Horse Times https://auction.ahtimes.com
•50% of the Stallion Nomination payments are reserved for that breeding year’s Auction foal crop to have as bonus prize money in the Futurity Finals!
•Each year, the percentage of the Auction bonus prize money divided between the Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurities will be determined by the number of breedings offered.
•Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money:
•The added money will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals -- no matter the placing in the class.
•For example, in the 2025 Purebred Finals, if all entries are AWPA Auction foals, the Top 14 will each receive an additional $2,092.14 in prize money [$29,290 split 14 ways].
•Likewise, if 2 of the 14 finalists in the 2029 Half-Arabian Finals are AWPA Auction foals, they will each receive an additional $12,455.00 in prize money [$24,910 split 2 ways]!
Don’t miss this incredible opportunity in March to produce a foal that will be eligible for significantly more Western Pleasure prize money than any other Futurity program!

ENROLLING YOUR STALLION
Stallions may be enrolled annually for the fee of $1,000 by the deadline of December 1st of the year preceding the stallion auction. For example, to have a stallion enrolled for the 2026 year, the paperwork and payment must be submitted by December 1, 2025. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
One (1) breeding must be donated to the AWPA Stallion Service Auction. A stallion owner may choose to donate two (2) breedings, one Purebred and one Half-Arabian, for their $1,000 nomination fee.
•Whether the owner donates one or two breedings, the nomination fee remains at $1,000.00.
•In order for both Purebred and Half-Arabian foals of the nominated stallion to be eligible to compete in the corresponding classes, the stallion must offer BOTH a Purebred and Half-Arabian breeding in the Auction.
•The stallion owner agrees to be the purchaser of the auction donated breeding if it does not sell at auction, for the minimum bid of $1,000.
•Foals resulting from breedings purchased in the Auction are eligible for additional class prize money that will be split evenly among the Top 14 AWPA Auction foals in the Finals – no matter the placing in the class.
Stallion owners receive one ‘Auction’ breeding with their paid nomination. This breeding can be used on a mare of the stallion owner’s choice or can be sold by the Stallion owner for any fee the stallion owner chooses. An in-utero Mare Nomination must be submitted by December 31st with payment of $100.
For every three (3) stallions one stallion owner nominates, they will receive a fourth stallion nomination at no charge.
Stallions who sire the Champions in the 2025 AWPA Purebred and Half-Arabian Futurity classes will receive a 2026 stallion enrollment at no charge.
MARE NOMINATION
In order for foals sired by an AWPA nominated stallion to be eligible to participate in the Futurity and Maturity classes, they must be nominated in-utero by submitting a Mare Nomination Form.
Mares must be nominated before the end of the breeding/auction year for a $100 fee. December 31, 2026, for this year. Nomination forms can be found at arabianwesternpleasure.com.
Any mare that has been bred to an AWPA enrolled stallion can be nominated. However, the stallion must have been enrolled in the type of class the foal would compete in. For instance, if a stallion only offers a Purebred breeding in the program, then Half-Arabian foals would not be eligible, and Mare Nominations would not be accepted.
The breeding does not have to be purchased in the AWPA Stallion Service Auction.
LIMITED OPEN BONUS
In addition to the class prize money at U.S. Nationals, a $2,500 bonus will be awarded to the owner of the horse with the highest placing Limited Open rider in both the AWPA Purebred and HalfArabian Futurity Finals.
All entries with eligible riders will automatically be entered in the Limited Open division. No additional payment is required to be eligible for the added Limited Open prize money.
Limited Open Eligibility
Riders who have won five (5) or more National Champion or Reserve Champion titles at Canadian, Mid Summer and/or U.S. Nationals will not be eligible for the Limited Open added money.
Arabian and Half-Arabian Western Pleasure classes that count towards eligibility include Open, Junior Horse, 3 Year-Old Futurity and the AWPA Futurity.
Rider eligibility is based on AHA rider records beginning in 2001. Any national tiltes won prior to 2001 will bot be counted toward eligibility.
Amateur and Youth rideres are not eligible for the Limited Open Bonus.

ENTRIES
•Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on the AWPA website, and shows the nominated breedings.
•Each year’s Mare Nomination list is posted on the AWPA website, and shows the nominated breedings.
•This is in addition to the AHA entry form.
•All other entry and office fees charged by National shows must be paid directly to the show.
CLASS GUIDELINES
The U.S. National AWPA Futurity classes are open to four-year-olds who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year.
The AWPA Maturity classes are open to four and five-year-olds shown who were nominated in-utero by December 31st of their breeding year, and to be shown by an Adult Amateur Owner rider.
A five judge total points system will be used. Each Judge’s placing will be ranked and points applied according to the following table:
1st = 40 2nd = 363rd = 32 4th = 28
5th = 24 6th = 20 7th = 16 8th = 12
9th = 8 10th = 4 11th – 14th = 0
The Board will select the five judges from the panels at each National show. The Board will select two of the five judges to sit rail-side and judge the AWPA Futurity classes from the arena stands for the duration of the riding portion.
Quality is the number one criterion for judging, followed by performance, suitability, and manners.
•A stallion or gelding showing with their penis substantially exposed (flaccid or erect) in any portion of the class, will be considered to have a major manner’s violation. Judges will be advised to score the horse so as not to receive a placing in the class.
Class eliminations will be run as a standard Western Pleasure Junior Horse class.
•Elimination cuts will not ask for horses to be stripped of tack, and the lineup will have all horses face one rail, side by side.
•Fourteen (14) horses total will advance to the final.
The Final will be run as a standard Western Pleasure Junior Horse class. Upon completion of the rail portion, horses will be called to line up head to tail.
•Two attendants per horse will be allowed into the arena to assist with removing saddles and pads. They are allowed to bring a saddle rack, towel, and brush.
•Riders are to stand up their horse to be assessed for conformational suitability to Western Pleasure by the judges.
•Once the judging panel has completed their examination of a horse, it should be resaddled.
•After all horses have retacked, riders will be asked to remount and attendants will be excused from the ring.
•The Top Ten will be called out in numerical order.
•The Reserve Champion and then the Champion will be placed and given their awards. The horses will leave the arena in reverse order of their placings (10th place first and Champion last).
