The Arabian horse ‘bug’ had definitely bit and taken hold. “From one horse boarded at a public facility; today we are our own breeding operation on a
very small scale,” Kim shares. “Though we have some outcrosses, our particular focus is the Varian bred lines, primarily western pleasure horses. Our horses are encouraged to tell us what they want to do, so it’s been an eclectic journey in terms of a variety of disciplines! Take home-bred ASA Calypso Kid. By PA Kid Khan, he certainly has the western pleasure bloodlines, yet excels in hunter pleasure. This 4-year-old black gelding will be competing in the AHPA Arabian Futurity at U.S. Nationals with trainer Lisa Powell for owner Laurie Taylor. Alistar Arabians also enjoys notoriety in other show pen competitions. “Back in 2012, then unbeknownst to me,” Kim chuckles, “my husband caught sight of EQ Escalade, a high stepping grey gelding reminiscent of a horse he’d known in childhood. He followed the horse back to its show barn, learned it was for sale and bought him on the spot. No vet check, no negotiations. Later on, at the same show, Jim insisted we watch the native costume class, asking me which horse I liked the most. I chose Escalade who was announced as unanimous champion of the class. Jim then stunned me by proclaiming we owned him!” Kim and trainer Brooke Fuchs have gone on with Escalade to win multiple national and regional championships in show hack and native costume, illustrating how an Arabian horse can be dazzling and disciplined all in one package. Alistar Arabian’s homebred 4-year-old black, homozygous stallion ASA Scandalous Affair is already drawing attention in the breeding and western pleasure show pen. Standing at stud and trained by Dale Brown, Kim admits he is “a dream come true.” Kim adds, “Scandal is true Varian breeding royalty, sired by Always A Jullyen V and out of Sweet Saphire V, a full sister to the late, great breeding stallion Sundance Kid V. His resemblance to him is uncanny!” With several new foals on the ground for 2019 and an active show schedule, Kim and Jim extend their gratitude to the “village of Arabian horse lovers who have helped us along the way,” allowing Alistar Arabians to “keep on, keeping on.” Ar abian Horse Times | 3 | Southeast 2019

What is your farm’s focus? Breeding beautiful yet functional horses, primarily focusing on producing western pleasure and reining horses. What do you see is the biggest challenge to getting more people involved with Arabians? What is your farm doing to help? Exposure and cost. That being said, I do not feel a lot of people have ever been exposed to an Arabian, so we welcome anyone to come by for a visit to introduce them to these wonderful creatures. Our farm has also been active in getting youth involved with the Arabian horse by allowing junior riders to show our horses throughout the years. How is the Southeast region impacting the industry as a whole? The Southeast region as a whole is producing some of the best quality Arabians in the country and abroad.

What can the Region 12 Championship and Spotlight Futurity do to bring more people to the Arabian horse? The Spotlight Futurity is already doing a wonderful job allowing breeders and owners to showcase their foals. As far as Region 12, I realize that cost and time becomes a factor as a show, but possibly allowing more age splits would encourage more people to come to the show. It is difficult for a trainer to prepare if he has numerous horses going into classes where there is no age split. Overall though, I find the Region 12 Championships to be an extremely well run and fun show; one of my favorite shows of the year! Where do you see changes can be made to improve the overall health of the industry? Making the Arabian horse appealing to all levels of consumers, from the backyard horse to the National Champion show horse. Sometimes I think we focus too much on the show aspect and not the overall versatility of the Arabian horse. Ar abian Horse Times | 6 | Southeast 2019

How long have you been a part of the Southeast region? What’s kept you in this location? I’ve lived here nine years. I love the weather; it’s very conducive to keeping horses at their peak year-round. What is one thing about the climate and landscape of the Southeast region that you feel is most beneficial to the horse’s overall health, condition and well-being? Our weather allows us to work 12 months out of the year and keeps our horses in show shape and ready to be seen by anyone at any time. The Southeast has been a prominent and steadfast area when it comes to longstanding and successful breeding programs. What is it about this area that you feel encourages and maintains such a strong focus on breeding? We have some amazing breeders in this area who have been diligent in producing some of the best in our breed.

How does Region 12 set itself apart from other regionals/ shows? What’s one thing you think other shows could take away from this event? Having the Egyptian classes and the Spotlight program, I think, have been a huge help in keeping our halter numbers high. How has the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity impacted your program? Unfortunately, with the USEF co-habitation rule being used by the Spotlight program, it’s prevented my clients from partaking, as most are older and can’t show themselves, and even if you have a full-time non-horse job, if you co-habitate, you still can’t show. Youth are exempt from this, so for our farm we have not been able to partake nearly as much as we would like in this program.

What type of Equestrian sports will be featured at WEC Ocala? Our facility is equipped to host many different equestrian disciplines such as Hunter/Jumper, Dressage, Para equestrian, Vaulting and Reining. We will welcome breed events as well, such as Quarter Horse, Paso Fino, Arabians, etc. In addition to equestrian sports, the facility will host weddings, corporate events, athletic events, dog shows, car shows, antique shows and more. What is this going to bring to the equestrian community in Ocala and to the larger equestrian world? Ocala is beautiful and truly the ‘Horse Capital of the World.’ So, it is fitting that WEC have a presence in Ocala. To have World Equestrian Center in Ocala adjacent to Golden Ocala is incredible for exhibitors and their families. Golden Ocala offers the equestrian the experience of amazing amenities like golf, swimming, tennis, fine dining and, of course, real estate, so it is truly unique in our world. We look to the past to incorporate things that we loved about showing horses as kids – and then we tie in more modern aspects to the facility like better footing, equipment and technology. These things make managing horse shows easier and more efficient and that translates to making showing horses easier and more enjoyable for everyone. How long have you been a part of the Southeast region? What’s kept you in this location? I’ve lived in the Southeast my entire life. I love the fact that we have year-round excellent weather! What is one thing about the climate and landscape of the Southeast region that you feel is most beneficial to the horse’s overall health, condition and well-being? We have excellent, soft ground and we are never stuck inside due to poor weather. We have horse shows throughout the year and never have snow days. The Southeast has been a prominent and steadfast area when it comes to longstanding and successful breeding programs. What is it about this area that you feel encourages and maintains such a strong focus on breeding? I think our weather plays a big role in the Southeast’s breeding programs. When most of the country is still bundled up and experiencing harsh weather, we are sunny and warm, and mares are cycling regularly. What do you appreciate most about being a part of the Region 12/Southeast community? Again, this is a great area to run a training business because of our year-round mild weather. Our horse community is a pretty close-knit group, too, which definitely helps! And who can’t appreciate being a few hours from the beach! How does Region 12 set itself apart from other regionals/ shows? What’s one thing you think other shows could take away from this event? Region 12 is an excellent show and possibly my favorite show of the year. We have a great venue with a show committee that works hard to please everyone (and good footing!). The Spotlight program has taken our regional show to a whole new level and the fact that we offer multiple payback classes for our breeders and exhibitors is a game changer!

The Spotlight Futurity has without question, added horses to my show string, simply for the fact that there is the possibility for our clients to compete and actually win some serious money. How long have you been a part of the Southeast region? What’s kept you in this location? I have lived in Florida since 2004, and remain, as all my family is here, and I love the camaraderie of the Arabian horse family here. Region 12 is the best! What is one thing about the climate and landscape of the Southeast region that you feel is most beneficial to the horse’s overall health, condition and well-being? The Southeast region is great for the horses due to the climate being consistent for grass and hay growth. Also, it’s great for coat conditioning and the horses don’t have to wear blankets half the year! I grew up in Southern Ohio, so lots of cold there!

What is it about this area that you feel encourages and maintains such a strong focus on breeding? I think the climate has a lot to do with this. Farms can breed for early foals which in the long run makes them more competitive when their show career begins. What do you appreciate most about being a part of the Region 12/ Southeast community? That everyone is so supportive of one another and is willing to help with anything needed. Region 12 is a family community! How does Region 12 set itself apart from other regionals/shows? What’s one thing you think other shows could take away from this event? I think Region 12 is one of the best shows there is. It is a relaxed atmosphere as far as the schedule is concerned, and everyone is so friendly and helpful.

How has the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity impacted your program? I only have one horse right now, Valhalla WS, but with her, it has been a great program for me. She has won big prize money in all the classes she has been shown in. The Spotlight Futurity program is a major incentive for Arabian horse enthusiasts. There are so many divisions the horses can show in as youngsters or can wait and show in the performance division starting as 3-year-olds. The program adds a lot of incentive for buyers looking for a good show horse!

How long have you been a part of the Southeast region? What’s kept you in this location? Rohara started as a business in 1968. We moved to the Ocala area from Miami as Ocala was fast becoming the horse capital of the world, representing a diverse variety of breeds. The development and opening of the World Equestrian Center will continue to insure Ocala’s meaningful place in the equine industry. The WEC will open next year, becoming possibly the most outstanding equine facility in the world. Climate controlled barns, a variety of arenas and a five-star hotel will make it a destination for all facets of the horse industry. What is one thing about the climate and landscape of the Southeast region that you feel is most beneficial to the horse’s overall health, condition and well-being? Grass with a limestone base is good for bone and feet. Our area has a roll to the land and phenomenal water percolation, and being in the center of the state is better located to avoid hurricane extremes. The Southeast has been a prominent and steadfast area when it comes to longstanding and successful breeding programs. What is it about this area that you feel encourages and maintains such a strong focus on breeding? Karl Hart started the Regional system when he was director of Region 12. Rohara has been a part of Region 12 since its conception. The southeast region has had phenomenal success and made a true contribution through their breeding programs, both in the U.S. and abroad. How does Region 12 set itself apart from other regionals/ shows? What’s one thing you think other shows could take away from this event? The Region 12 Spotlight program encourages the growth of our breed. The sale of stud fees at auction has continued to improve with this year’s results, stronger than the previous sales. Breeders have a true purpose from nominations of their mares prior to foaling to entering their foals in the money-based divisions held at the Region 12 show. Their dual purpose incorporates the

How long have you been a part of the Southeast region? What’s kept you in this location? I have been in this region for 20 years. I am from the Midwest; my affiliation with Kansas City, then Live Oak Arabians Inc. for nearly 10 years, certainly had a great deal to do with it. I have been in Florida nearly 10 years also. I enjoy the fact that we show all year. After U.S. Nationals, barns are on a bit of a break, but we are gearing up for a couple of shows here! What is one thing about the climate and landscape of the Southeast region that you feel is most beneficial to the horse’s overall health, condition and well-being? Well, the weather can be brutal; the heat can be intolerable on some days, but I will take this over snow any day! We do have issues with scratches and allergies, but there are easy remedies to keep it all in check. The Southeast has been a prominent and steadfast area when it comes to longstanding and successful breeding programs. What is it about this area that you feel encourages and maintains such a strong focus on breeding? I think the weather is a big influence. We can breed early and start the whole process much earlier than most. Plus, you have some of the most successful breeding/training farms in the country here.

How does Region 12 set itself apart from other regionals/ shows? What’s one thing you think other shows could take away from this event? I think that all shows are having their ups and downs, with the economy and so many activities, but we have a wonderful facility in Perry, GA; they keep the footing in top order. The Region 12 Spotlight is also a big draw … good prize money, for sure.
How has the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity impacted your program? I have not really participated in the Spotlight as much as some. We are realizing the benefits of it and the prize money that is available, and will certainly be much more proactive in the years to come.

How long have you been a part of the Southeast region? What’s kept you in this location? I’ve been a part of the Southeast all 26 years of my life. I was born and raised in Miami and in 2018, my mom, Renee, and I relocated to Ocala. Family, friends and horses have been the reason for staying. What is one thing about the climate and landscape of the Southeast region that you feel is most beneficial to the horse’s overall health, condition and well-being? For the most part, the weather and landscape are very consistent. In the spring/summer, you can almost always anticipate a storm coming—the wind and humidity change, so it allows for some time to prepare. But everything blossoms and turns green, and a beautiful breeze sets in. Fall/winter are dryer and cooler months, so we always prepare to supplement grazing with more hay. Normally, the weather doesn’t change very drastically, so the horses can adjust accordingly to the weather as the seasons change. The Southeast has been a prominent and steadfast area when it comes to longstanding and successful breeding programs. What is it about this area that you feel encourages and maintains such a strong focus on breeding? With a beautiful, mild climate all year long and soil rich with limestone calcium, this unique environmental package is ideal for breeding strong, healthy foals and developing world-class equine athletes. The ecosystem is irreplaceable; it is a mix of several factors combined into a specific recipe, which includes clean mineral-rich water and soil, along with clean air and open pastureland.

What do you appreciate most about being a part of the Region 12/ Southeast community? Having been in the region my whole life, the majority of people I show with have watched me grow up or have grown up alongside me. From a little girl in braids and bows in lead-line, to now showing and excelling in and out of the ring as an adult. So many amazing individuals have come into our lives and become a part of our family. I am so grateful for the wonderful friendships Region 12 and being in the S.E. has allowed me to make! We are new to the Spotlight program, and are very much looking forward to seeing some spectacular Fire And Goldd babies participate in the future! Allowing breeders the opportunity to show their babies, have a great time and win some prize money is never a bad thing!

How long have you been a part of the Southeast region? What’s kept you in this location? We have been in the Southeast forever. We love the Ocala area, our horses and good friends who are here. And we have the very best trainer ever in Dwane Hankins! What is one thing about the climate and landscape of the Southeast region that you feel is most beneficial to the horse’s overall health, condition and well-being? Clean air and water, excellent soil, lush grass, and of course, the fact that we can ride and train all year-round and the horses are never cooped up in a closed barn, which is so much better for their overall health. The Southeast has been a prominent and steadfast area when it comes to longstanding and successful breeding programs. What is it about this area that you feel encourages and maintains such a strong focus on breeding? The availability of large parcels of land for farms and having great repro vets and clinics here who are up to date on the latest technologies. We also have our FedEx hub centrally located so shipping/receiving semen is very easy. What do you appreciate most about being a part of the Region 12/Southeast community? We are a close-knit group, always happy and willing to help each other. We are always there for each other, and we are a funny and lively group. There’s always some sort of mischief afoot! How does Region 12 set itself apart from other regionals/ shows? What’s one thing you think other shows could take away from this event? The facility is very good: an abundance of covered warmups, none of the stalls are far from the main ring, the weather is usually excellent due to the show being in early May, there’s always at least one U.S. Nationals judge in center ring, and there is plenty of time during breaks to visit with old friends and make new ones!

The 42nd Annual Region XII Championship & Spotlight Futurity Horse Show by Anne Stratton
T
his year the ever-popular Region XII Championships, home of the Spotlight Futurity, was themed “Derby Day,” in recognition of its place on the calendar soon after the Kentucky Derby. However, there was a significant difference from the Run for the Roses. When the dust settled, Region XII retained its reputation as a super-fun stop for horsemen, reflecting none of the controversy surrounding the 2019 Derby. Those who attended the show brought national level contenders (who blew each other away in the show ring), attended enough parties to exhaust the normal tourist, and raided the bank for the Spotlight Futurity Auction. The bottom line was, they had a great time enjoying their horses and each other. Let’s start with the basics. The Region XII Championships run for nearly a week every spring—this year, May 5-11—at the Georgia National Fairgrounds, which are known as one of the most efficient and friendly horse show venues anywhere. The main ring judges were Lisa Corbin, Greg Gallún, and Leon Matthias; scoring in Sport Horse (In-Hand, Dressage, Hunters, and Jumpers) were Joe Sevriens, Natalie Lamping, and Gardner Powell. The show again offered an array of straight Egyptian and Egyptian Heritage classes, judged by UK horseman Emrys Jones. In addition, to please an increasingly diversified clientele, the show committee added In-Hand Trail and Ranch Riding to an already lengthy list of classes. For the past 13 years, the headline story of Region XII, the country’s largest region geographically, has been its Spotlight Futurity. The 2019 Futurity offered $182,954 in prize money, and ultimately paid out $169,160, with the remaining $13,794 carried over for future years. The money is raised by an annual auction of breedings to its member stallions, which took place on Thursday evening. In order to be included in the live auction, stallions must first appear in an online auction conducted by the Arabian Horse Times, which began on April 28, and attract a bid of $1,000 or more. Sires who didn’t reach that figure continued to be available online through May 19, while the ones who did, saw their breedings come under auctioneer Bill Addis’ gavel. This year, the high sellers were EKS Alihandro at $8,200 and Exxalt at $5,000, followed by PA Kid Khan and Bey Ambition, each of whom attracted a bid of $4,000. New this year at the Spotlight, by request of the Futurity right holders, was that those who purchased breedings for next year, as is standard at events of this nature, may use them in the current year, if the stallion owner approves and payment for the purchase is made in full on the night of the auction or the date of purchase. Also, Egyptian stallions who participated in the auction were given a certificate for the show’s Egyptian classes.

On Saturday night, the Spotlight’s “Distinction” Awards were presented. Leigh Meyer’s SW Ovation (OFW Magic Wan x SW Jasmine) was honored as the Stallion of Distinction. The 7-year-old was the sire of Randy Meyer’s O Sherlock, Champion Colt in both the Spotlight Futurity and the Auction class, and Heidi Turner’s Spotlight Futurity Champion Filly, O La La Lulu. The Breeders of Distinction for 2019 were Diane and Randy Alexander, of Archer, Florida. “Our 13 classes were some of the biggest of the show,” Charles Moseley, President of the Spotlight Futurity, notes, “and there was a great atmosphere, hosting the Auction this year in the Beef and Dairy Barn. We’re very thankful for our Platinum Sponsors, whose sponsorships paid for the dinner. Everyone raved about the food!” As usual, the Region XII Show and Futurity Committees face a stiff challenge for 2020. This year’s production will be a hard act to follow.

What do you appreciate most about being a part of the Region 12/Southeast community? The great people and the talented horses that we compete against. How does Region 12 set itself apart from other regionals/ shows? What’s one thing you think other shows could take away from this event? They have a great schedule for both exhibitors and horses. This is the best run regional show that we attend all year. How has the Region 12 Spotlight Futurity impacted your program? 2019 is the first year that we have entered our stallions in this program.
