I’m as pleased as anybody across the industry to say that spring finally sprung on the weather front, in fact the late-May heat wave meant the UK recorded its third warmest spring on record, with England and Wales going further and recording their warmest ever. As a result, the industry has enjoyed a spring boost and possibly better still, according to the Met Office, it looks like more warm weather is on the way too!

Another ‘cool’ development that has taken off over the last few years is cold water therapy and the increasingly widespread adoption of ice baths and plunge pools. They also go by numerous other names, but in short, these products all provide a setting for cold water therapy and the many benefits it provides. Inside we take a look at just some of the options that are currently available to add some chill. Whilst on the subject of temperatures, and going to the other end of the scale, we’ve also an in depth look at the latest environmentally friendly heat pump models that are on the market – products that just seem to keep on improving year on year.

Of course, when it comes to the weather, it’s a fine line that our industry has to tread, especially on the domestic side, as the lack of rain can lead to TUBs (Temporary Use Bans). Worse still is that when the weather gets stiflingly hot, many people take to the water to cool off and sadly, there have been a number of water-based fatalities reported over recent weeks. From what I’ve seen none of these have been related to wet leisure facilities or products, but they still highlight the very real and ever present dangers that exist around water. With that in mind, inside this issue, there is a piece on the National Water Safety Forum’s latest campaign –Phone, Float, Throw – and I urge all readers to take note of it and share the message as far and as wide as possible.

There are plenty of ways to keep cool this summer safely and one of them is through use of an above-ground pool. Inside, we also explore what’s new in a sector that’s still very popular despite alternative products being available, a fact that is largely due to a wide range of options offering lots of flexibility and exceptional value for money. If record temperatures persist, these are likely to be viewed as welcome spaces to escape the heat.

Some would say creating the right ambience in wet leisure settings is equally as important as providing the facilities themselves. I can’t disagree. So it’s fitting that in this issue we have a feature on one of the product sectors that are at the forefront of providing this – and that sector is lighting. Inside, we look at the latest options that are illuminating pool and spa projects and their surroundings across the UK and showing them in their best possible light. With the latest products offering improved benefits of ownership, exhibitions are great places to see them in the flesh and in this issue we also look at the events that are taking place in the latter part of the year and beyond. If that wasn’t enough, we’ve a number of shorter pieces too. We take a look at London’s Woolwich Waves project that opened earlier in the year and there’s a piece from the STA which hopes to raise awareness about risks of surfaces in wet leisure environments. Lastly, there’s an Opinion piece about transparency and what hot tub warranties actually cover from Xavier Labelle of the Canadian Spa Company UK.

As ever, there’s also updates and further useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA, along with useful information from affiliated companies. Plus, we’ve also got our round up of all the latest news from both here in the UK and from abroad too.

So, that’s this latest issue of SPN fully broken down for you. As always, I hope you enjoy reading it and find its contents useful – let’s all hope this weather continues too and we all benefit from a long and hot (but not too hot) summer!

Alliance Leisure Completes £15m Transformation At Doncaster Domes’ Lagoons

Operator Alliance Leisure are excited to announce the completion of works to the Lagoons at Doncaster Dome, on behalf of Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust, funded by City of Doncaster Council.

The newly redeveloped Lagoons represent a significant milestone in the regeneration vision for the iconic leisure destination.

The project was procured via the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd (DLL) and was delivered in partnership with project managers Abacus, principal contractor Universal, architects Saunders Boston, pool specialists Myrtha Pools and FT Leisure, plus CGP and Hensall delivering M&E services.

The redevelopment modernises one of the Dome’s most popular attractions, enhancing the visitor experience while securing the longterm future of the facility for the local community.

Two new racer slides and a new indoor splash play area with a variety of interactive water features form part of the extensive programme of upgrades which have taken place over the past 18 months.

Major works have also been undertaken to replace the glazing, redesign the main entrance area and install new heating and ventilation systems responsible for heating and maintaining water and air quality within the swimming pool environment.

The project has aimed to modernise the pool complex, while preserving the character of the Grade II listed building, which opened in 1989 and was listed in 2023 becoming one of the youngest listed buildings in the country.

Sean Nolan, Regional Director at Alliance Leisure, said: “This has

been an ambitious and technically complex project delivered in a live operational environment, and we are incredibly proud to have reached completion alongside our delivery partners. The revitalised Lagoons are a fantastic example of how investment in community leisure infrastructure can revitalise and protect key local assets and create experiences that will benefit generations to come.”

Pool Pods Proving A Success At Active Mid Devon Pools

New Pool Pods at Active Mid Devon’s swimming pools are helping more people enjoy swimming safely and independently.

Since being installed in February the Pool Pods at both Active Tiverton and Active Crediton are being used on average four to five times a week.

The Pool Pod 3.0 is a discreet, fully automated pool lift designed to help people with reduced mobility, disabilities, or additional support needs get safely into and out of the water.

Operated at the touch of a button, it gently lowers swimmers into the pool and allows them to enjoy swimming with greater independence, comfort and dignity.

The feedback from the community

has been overwhelmingly positive. One social media user commented “This is amazingmy mum loves swimming but hasn’t been able to do the steps for years, so this will be great for her” and another added “That’s such good news as I love swimming but

getting in and out of the pool since my nerve damage has been hard. I get nervous that I might slip and fall. Excellent new facility!”

the Pool Pods already being used regularly

Andy Mackie, Operations Manager for Leisure, said: “We’re really pleased to see the Pool Pods already being used regularly and, most importantly, being received so positively by swimmers. We hoped they would make our pools more accessible and help people feel confident getting back into the water, and it’s fantastic to see that happening.”

The pods have been funded in part from Sport England and the National Lottery which provided £15,000 towards the purchase and installation of the pods.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCED FOR STA CONFERENCE

STA has confirmed that Tara Dillon, Chief Executive of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), will headline as keynote speaker at the STA National Conference 2026.

Taking place on 13-14 November 2026 at the Delta Hotels by Marriott Cheltenham Chase, the two-day event will bring together swimming teachers, tutors, operators and aquatic professionals from across the UK for a comprehensive programme of learning, collaboration and sector insight.

Widely recognised as one of the UK sector’s, Tara has been instrumental in shaping the professionalisation of the workforce since joining CIMSPA in 2015. Under her leadership, the organisation has played a central role in strengthening career pathways, raising professional standards and supporting the long-term development of the sector.

CRISIS FACING UK’S POOLS HIGHLIGHTED

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Swimming published the findings of its report ‘The Deep End’ at the end of March and its findings weren’t good.

Commissioned to identify the structural, financial and operational challenges affecting swimming pools across the country, more than 200 written submissions were received from operators, membership bodies, governing bodies, clubs and individual members of the aquatic community.

The report shows that the UK’s swimming pool estate is ageing fast and becoming unsustainable without urgent action. More than 1,200 pools are over 40 years old and are past their expected lifespan.

The insight has helped shape a strong, practical set of recommendations to protect these vital community assets and safeguard aquatic facilities for generations to come.

Mapei UK Marks Continued Expansion With New Distribution Centre

Adhesives and sealants specialist Mapei UK has acquired new warehousing and offices as part of its continued expansion. The new mega-hub, titled 02 Distribution Centre, is located at Titan 10, Bilston, near Wolverhampton, spans over 260,000ft2 and will provide warehousing for Mapei’s increasing product lines for construction projects. Mapei’s Midlands-located warehouses will continue to transfer to the 02 location during 2026 as part of the company’s strategy to bring all logistics ‘under one roof’.

A premium facility located just four miles from the M6, Titan 10 Bilston provides excellent connectivity for Mapei UK’s regional and national distribution. The expected average Mapei tonnage that will be dispatched from the warehouse is

15,152 Tn/month.

Established in the UK in 1989, Mapei UK employs more than 450 people throughout the UK and Ireland. The firm cemented its commitment to the local market in 2004 with the completion of a brand-new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Halesowen, West Midlands. It now also has a concrete admixtures manufacturing plant in Speke, Liverpool and two further manufacturing facilities in Burnley, a Mapei Academy training facility in Halesowen and a Specification Centre in Clerkenwell, London.

Office space at the 02 Distribution Centre will house Mapei UK’s Technical Services and Marketing Departments.

“The new Distribution Centre will enable us to further enhance our customer service, efficiency and capacity. Being close to our main Halesowen plant, and in such a connected central location, it also brings additional sustainability benefits, enabling us to optimise transport routes and implement new initiatives from a central site,” explained Phil Breakspear, Mapei UK Managing Director.

IN BRIEF

SUPPORT FOR SWIMMING IN FOLKESTONE

A £2.4m grant which will enable the reopening of swimming facilities at Folkestone Sports Centre has been supported.

Cabinet members have endorsed The Sports Trust’s scheme to revitalise the Radnor Park Avenue site – agreeing to fund essential work including pool and changing room renovation, the addition of solar panels and repairs to the flat roof.

It is expected community swimming, and the associated health and social benefits, will return to Folkestone Sports Centre later in the year with this investment.

The importance of the pool to residents, schools and clubs has been especially evident since its closure in August 2024. A petition highlighting the need to save it attracted some 9,000 signatures.

Compass Pools Launches Ambassador Programme To Unlock New Revenue Streams For Outdoor Professionals

Compass Pools by Waterstream has officially launched its UK Ambassador Programme, opening up an exciting new commercial opportunity for outdoor specialist trades looking to maximise the value of premium swimming pool enquiries, without taking on installation complexity, technical liability or long-term operational risk.

Designed for pool companies, landscapers, garden designers and outdoor living specialists, the freeto-join programme introduces a dynamic referral model that supports trade partner collaboration. Ambassadors can pass high-quality residential enquiries directly to Compass Pools and be financially rewarded as those projects move forward. With each project, Compass Pools handles the full delivery process, including design, manufacture, installation and optional aftercare.

The tiered reward structure allows Ambassadors

to receive a fixed fee for every qualified introduction, an additional payment when a Compass Pool is specified, and a completion commission once the pool has been installed and fully invoiced. This provides partners with a route to additional revenue, without taking on extra staff or dealing with site risks.

Alex Kemsley, Managing Director commented: “There is a huge amount of opportunity sitting within the trade, where many professionals are having the right conversations with clients, but want to avoid the risk or resource demand of delivering a luxury pool. This programme unlocks opportunities for enquiries to create commercial return, with the project being delivered by a specialist installer with the right systems already in place.”

As the UK’s largest installer of one-piece swimming pools, Compass Pools by Waterstream brings more than 20 years’ experience to the programme, with over 700 completed installations nationwide. Its advanced carbon-ceramic composite pools are precision-manufactured in a controlled factory environment and installed by dedicated in-house teams.

Operating nationwide, the Ambassador Programme is supported by Compass Pools’ Design Consultants, structured technical briefings and approved marketing materials.

Morgan Sindall Construction’s North East business has started work on Outer West Leisure Centre, a £20m community facility for Newcastle City Council (NCC) that will serve as a hub for sport, health, and local services.

Procured via the Pagabo framework, the centre will house two swimming pools with moveable floors, a competition pool, splash pad, training pools, sauna and steam room, sports hall, library, gymnasium, and office spaces.

Carl Maddison, Project Manager for Morgan Sindall at Outer West Leisure Centre, said: “Building communities is a central tenet to the work we do, and the scheme at Outer West Leisure Centre is a great opportunity, in collaboration with Newcastle County Council, to demonstrate the capability

we have as a Tier-one contractor to deliver a future-proof community hub, but also to provide robust social value in all forms within the local environment.”

Newcastle City Council’s Director of Public Health, Alice Wiseman, said: “I am incredibly excited that work has started on the leisure centre and swimming pool at West Denton.

“It will offer residents first class health and leisure facilities as well as a new library substantially improving their quality of life.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work and some dedicated partnership working to get to this stage, but I am thrilled that Morgan Sindall have now commenced the construction phase and I look forward with hope and optimism that the centre will be completed in late 2027.”

Pool Tech Launches New Website As The Business Celebrates 18 Years

This year marks a big milestone for Pool Tech Services as the company celebrates 18 years in business, plus alongside that, it is proud to officially launch a brand-new website.

After nearly two decades supporting commercial pool operators across the UK, it felt like the right time for the business to evolve digitally too. The new website has been designed to better reflect who they are today, the services they provide and the way they work with clients nationwide.

Like everything they do at Pool Tech, the focus wasn’t on creating something overcomplicated or flashy. The company wanted a website that was straightforward, easy to navigate and genuinely useful for the people using it. Somewhere operators can quickly understand what the company does, explore its services and get in touch with the right people without having to dig through pages of jargon.

The new site gives a clearer overview of the services the company provides across commercial swimming pool maintenance and plant room support, including servicing, installations, upgrades, condition reporting,

leak detection, flow rate testing, chemical dosing and equipment rental solutions.

It also gives the company a much better platform to share industry insights, company updates, projects and news moving forward, helping Pool Tech stay connected with its clients and the wider water leisure industry.

Reaching 18 years in business is something the Pool Tech Services team is incredibly proud of. Since launching in 2008, the company has grown through long-term relationships, honest service and a reputation built on reliability and technical expertise. While the business has evolved over the years, the core approach has stayed exactly the same – delivering the right support, being responsive and doing the job properly!

The new website feels like an important next step for the business and a strong platform for the future.

The Hidden Carbon In Many Pools’ Water Treatment

Leisure operators across the UK are under real pressure to cut costs and carbon. Energy systems, heating, lighting are all scrutinised. Yet one area rarely gets the same attention: water treatment.

For most pools and leisure facilities, water disinfection still depends on regular deliveries of bulk sodium hypochlorite; a high-strength chemical transported by road, stored on site and replenished frequently as it degrades. The carbon embedded in that supply chain, production, transport, packaging and waste, is rarely measured and almost never factored into a facility’s sustainability reporting.

These are Scope 3 emissions: indirect carbon generated across the supply chain rather than on site. Research consistently shows that Scope 3 accounts for between 70 and 90% of most organisations’ total carbon footprint – making supply chain emissions the single largest climate risk and, for many businesses, the most significant area of carbon liability. And for operators working towards net

zero commitments or responding to local authority sustainability requirements, they represent a genuine gap between ambition and reality.

The alternative is well established. Electrochlorination systems like Gaffey’s Hyprolyser® iSEC® generate non-hazardous, lowconcentration sodium hypochlorite on site, using salt, water and electricity. Chemical deliveries are replaced by straightforward salt replenishment. COSHH administration is simplified. Packaging waste disappears. When powered by renewables, the carbon footprint of water treatment becomes minimal. This technology is already proven across commercial pools, leisure centres, hotels and spas. The question for the sector is whether the sustainability case for this technology is yet fully part of pool facility conversations.

As pool water standards evolve, operators are being asked to monitor more parameters than ever before, often with limited time and resources.

The MD150 13in1 photometer has been engineered to meet this challenge head on, delivering a future-proofed solution for modern water testing.

Going beyond traditional pool photometers, the MD150 enables testing not only of core parameters such as chlorine, pH and alkalinity, but also emerging and specialist requirements including sulphate, phosphate and aluminium. This expanded capability

supports proactive water management, helping operators identify issues earlier, protect plant equipment and maintain optimal water clarity.

Crucially, the MD150 also supports lower pH measurement ranges, aligning with the growing industry shift towards tighter water balance control and improved bather comfort. By combining this level of precision with simple operation and rapid results, it reduces reliance on multiple test methods and streamlines daily routines.

For commercial pools, spas and

Inver X Warrior – A Hassle-free Solution

Loved By Professionals

When Ocea UK introduced the Inver X Warrior automatic pool cleaner to the UK market back in 2022, they knew they had something special.

It quickly established itself as a go-to choice for professionals. Why? Because it’s robust, reliable, and the cleaner that many trade professionals actually love to use on their own pools.

Ocea UK didn’t stop at the original 3-hour endurance model, though. They listened to what the market needed and quickly introduced 6 and 8-hour models. This changed the game, allowing for multiple pool cleans on a single charge without the constant hassle of plugging back in.

The Inver X Warrior incorporates S-Path technology that ensures it cleans the whole pool every time, avoiding obstacles and cleverly knowing which areas have more dirt where it will apply full suction.

This is patented technology that controls the robots path uses a

it trundling along in straight lines and knowing when it’s on a slope or going vertically up a wall and with its cameras it maps the pool as it goes.

This allows the robot to preserve as much battery life as possible resulting in the Inver X pool cleaner to be the only cordless pool cleaner on the market with up to 8hrs cleaning.

But a great product is nothing without great back-up. Over the years, Ocea UK have heavily invested in their Pool Cleaner Service Centre in Witney. So whether a Warrior needs a major fix after a heavy season, a quick spruce-up for the summer or a simple health check to ensure peak performance, the company’s in-house specialists are ready to nurse it back to health.

Pentair Pool And Pool Brain To Release Technology Integration Initiative

Pentair Pool recently announced plans to release a technology integration with Pool Brain, a premier software platform for swimming pool service and repair professionals, to strengthen Pentair Pool’s connected equipment ecosystem and further advance Pentair’s vision for data-driven service and automation for pool professionals. Pre-filtration That Protects Pumps And Filters, From Waterco

Even the most reliable swimming pool filters can struggle when debris enters the system, from fine dirt to sand and other coarse particles. That is where Waterco’s multi-award-winning MultiCyclone Centrifugal Filters come in. By intercepting debris before it reaches the main filter, MultiCyclone reduces wear on pumps, cuts down maintenance demands, and ensures the entire system runs smoothly and efficiently.

“MultiCyclone acts as a first line of defence for the pool system,” said Tony Fisher, Waterco Division CEO North America and Europe. “By lowering the load on the main filter, it reduces downtime and operating costs while keeping pumps and other essential equipment performing at their best.”

Available in two sizes, the MultiCyclone MC12 is perfectly suited

to medium-sized pools, while the new MultiCyclone MC16 GEN2 meets the needs of larger domestic or highusage installations. Installation is straightforward, and the units integrate seamlessly with existing plumbing, making retrofits and upgrades hasslefree.

“MultiCyclone delivers tangible benefits: improved equipment longevity, lower operational costs, and water that is cleaner and clearer from the first swim to the last,” added Fisher. “Its proven performance has made it a trusted choice across Europe and beyond.”

Plastica – Ensuring Equal Opportunities To Swim

With decades of manufacturing experience, Plastica has built a strong reputation for delivering highquality bespoke solutions tailored to individual client requirements. This flexibility is especially valuable when addressing pool accessibility, where precision and customisation are essential.

Providing inclusive access to swimming pools is not just best practice – it is a legal obligation. Under the Equality Act 2010, service providers must make reasonable adjustments to ensure disabled users can safely access the water. This typically involves the installation of specialist equipment such as pool hoists, lifts or sloped entries, supported by thoughtful design to remove barriers and promote independence.

Plastica manufactures custom stainless-steel handrails, support rails and grab rails to exact specifications, improving safety and usability for all swimmers, including those with limited mobility. Available in 304 grade as standard, or 316 for saltwater environments, these products are suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. Cross-bracing options provide additional strength, and all units are produced in-house for consistent quality.

In addition to fixed support systems, Plastica offers a range of pool hoists and the company’s expertise extends to nationwide commercial projects, supported by experienced surveyors across the UK. This ensures every installation is carefully planned, fully compliant and professionally delivered – providing safe, reliable access solutions tailored to each site.

Wyld Sauna has announced that work is now underway on a major expansion at Princes Dock, Liverpool Waters, as the UK’s first floating sauna continues its commitment to community, accessibility and connection.

Since launching in November 2024, Wyld Sauna has quickly established itself as one of the city’s most unique destinations, welcoming thousands of guests to experience hot and cold therapy on the waterfront.

Now Wyld is growing, and this next phase comes directly from listening to the people who use it, with work set to complete in early summer.

The expanded site will support a broader programme of sessions designed for and curated by Liverpool’s diverse communities. This includes dedicated sessions so everyone can enjoy the space as they would like.

From focusing on building safe spaces for LGBTQ+ groups to fighting the loneliness epidemic with events catering to over60s, a clear emphasis on care is showing to be Wyld’s driving factor. Alongside these programmes, Wyld plans to host regular women-only and silent sessions.

As part of the redevelopment, the original floating sauna, now a signature part of Liverpool’s waterfront, will be refurbished and upgraded in line with the new facilities. Benches will be improved, flooring will be changed, new cold plunges brought in and upgrades to the sauna heaters will be made for more consistent and powerful heat delivery. BEHQ STRENGTHENS EXPANSION PLANS

Spanish group BEHQ, a specialist in chemical solutions for water treatment, is accelerating its international development and strengthening its presence in Morocco following the acquisition of Chemartis, its exclusive distributor in Italy.

This operation, carried out through the parent company Bonet Especialidades Hidroquímicas and Sebic group based near Barcelona, marks a significant restructuring of BEHQ’s commercial network across Europe and the Mediterranean.

The integration of Chemartis, a key player in pool water treatment in Italy, allows the Spanish group to transition from a long-standing commercial cooperation to a direct presence in this strategic market.

Following the reorganisation, Morocco is now one of the priority markets for the group’s development, alongside Tunisia, several Eastern European countries and the Gulf region. Currently, exports represent nearly 50% of BEHQ’s activities. The group achieved a revenue of €20m in 2025 and anticipates €30m in 2026, with approximately €6m coming from the newly integrated Italian operations.

Ezarri Gold Pool Tiles Create Australian Residential Project Elegance

Australia is home to some of the most demanding pool design standards globally, where quality and technical innovation are essential. A recent private residential project in the country chose Ezarri’s glass pool tile to create an exclusive aquatic space, featuring the Sponge Gold reference from the Gold Collection. The visual heart of this project lies in the selection of the Sponge Gold reference from the Gold collection launched in 2023, which takes the concept of pool mosaic tile to a new artistic level. This mosaic integrates glass tiles with 24-carat gold inlays, which, combined with a matte finish and a watercolour-effect texture, creates an unprecedented visual impact. Under the intense Australian natural light, the tiling interacts with the environment to transform the water into a clear skyblue tone, providing exceptional brightness and a

Fluidra

sense of spaciousness to the entire area.

From a technical perspective, the project successfully addressed complex curved surfaces and spa areas using JointPoint® technology. This system leaves 92% of the back of the tile free for the adhesive, ensuring superior bonding and a 25% reduction in installation time.

Safety is also a key component; the project includes the Safe anti-slip finish, which provides a secure surface that remains remarkably smooth to the touch. Finally, this luxury installation remains environmentally responsible, as the tiles are made from 100% recycled glass.

Acquires Ecotropy’s

Datapool To Lead Digitalisation And Efficiency In The Pool Sector

Fluidra has announced the acquisition of Datapool, the digital twin platform developed by Ecotropy. With this transaction, the company reinforces its strategic commitment to sustainability, operational efficiency and the digitalisation of the sector.

The transaction represents the evolution of a collaboration that began in 2024, when Fluidra invested in Ecotropy through Fluidra Ventures, its Corporate Venture Capital fund focused on startups with the potential to transform the pool and wellness sector through technological innovation.

With this acquisition, Datapool becomes fully integrated into Fluidra’s digital ecosystem for commercial pools, consolidating its role as a key part of the company’s value proposition. The platform incorporates advanced analytics

capabilities, IoT solutions and real-time data within an open and scalable architecture, in line with the company’s strategy to offer connected and sustainable solutions that maximise the efficiency of aquatic facilities and accelerate the transition towards smarter management models.

Datapool outfits aquatic facilities with digital twins, enabling pools to be managed using reliable, real-time data and replacing management models based on estimates or manual supervision.

In this way, the platform simulates the optimal operation of each facility and continuously compares it with variables such as energy consumption, occupancy, weather conditions and

water quality, providing a comprehensive view that helps anticipate incidents, optimise resources and improve operational performance.

Thanks to this technology, operators can reduce operating costs by 10% to 25% by optimising water and energy consumption without the need for construction works or invasive interventions; monitor and adjust key parameters such as temperature, water quality and occupancy in real time; automate management through predictive models that adapt climate control and operations to real demand; generate automatic reports with traceable data for audits, tenders or grant applications; and plan investments and improvements based on objective data.

New Olympic Pool Makes Splash In Queensland

A new Olympic-sized swimming pool in Queensland, Australia, delivered by Logan City Council, is set to give budding young gold medalists a headstart on their careers.

The 50-metre, eight-lane pool officially opened recently at the Beenleigh Aquatic Centre and is the second in the City of Logan that is Olympic-sized.

Mayor Jon Raven said the AUS$24.7m redevelopment could be the starting point for future local Olympians.

“The City of Logan is where the likes of Mollie O’Callaghan and Jodie Henry started their Olympic journeys. Now, the next generation of local Olympians will have the same opportunity to swim in elite conditions,” said Mayor Raven.

“The upgraded Beenleigh Aquatic Centre has arrived well ahead of the 2032 Games and will service our city well into the future.

“This milestone is a win for our entire community, not just our competitive swimmers. Between new barbecues and a play area for the kids, our new Beenleigh Aquatic Centre will be an attraction for families to enjoy on weekends, school holidays and hot days.”

The upgrade includes an expanded children’s water play area, shaded seating areas, barbecues, modern changeroom facilities, a kiosk and accessible and family-friendly amenities.

New solar panels have been installed and stormwater harvesting enabled to ensure the centre is sustainable into the future.

The new centre also has additional accessibility features for people living with a disability, with a pool ramp designed to improve safety, independence and compliance.

The AU$24.7m project was funded through the SEQ Liveability Fund under the SEQ City Deal, with Logan City Council investing AU$15m, alongside a combined AU$9.7m in funding from the Australian Government and Queensland Government.

Fluidra And European Aquatics Join Forces

Fluidra, a global leader in equipment and connected solutions for the pool and wellness sector, and European Aquatics, the governing body for aquatic sports in Europe, have signed an agreement to launch two programmes aimed at modernising aquatic facilities and expanding access to swimming education.

The initiative addresses two of the sector’s main challenges: the aging stock of public pools and the lack of infrastructure limiting access to swimming in certain regions.

This alliance marks a further step in the relationship between European Aquatics and Fluidra, which has until now focused on the sponsorship of aquatic

events and the development of competition pools, and is now expanding into initiatives with greater social impact.

The ‘Refurbishment Programme’ aims to upgrade existing aquatic facilities through free technical audits across Europe, with no subsequent obligation.

Based on these assessments, Fluidra develops improvement proposals focused on optimising operational efficiency, enhancing safety and extending the lifespan of facilities, while also reducing energy consumption. In addition, the solutions incorporate

sustainability and digitalisation criteria to align facilities with current industry standards.

Currently, more than 24,000 public pools across Europe show signs of obsolescence, representing a challenge in terms of both efficiency and safety.

The second pillar of the agreement focuses on the deployment of mobile pools designed to deliver the ‘Learn to Swim’ programme in areas without access to aquatic facilities. Through this initiative, thousands of people across more than 50 European regions,

including areas in Spain, are expected to learn how to swim thanks to mobile pools installed in locations lacking infrastructure.

This model of temporary pools, which are quick to install and equipped with integrated water treatment systems, allows for rotation between different municipalities, enabling a mobile use model and maximising the impact of the investment. This flexible approach makes it possible to bring swimming education to communities that currently lack adequate infrastructure.

The industry is embracing the drive to unlock the full potential in the workplace through an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group. There is also a specific sub-group promoting the importance of women as business owners, senior managers and as part of the wider workforce. The Women in Industry Network has met to agree on what the group wants to achieve, and some of the aspirations include promoting case studies of women for others to aspire to and follow in their footsteps, by championing what they have accomplished so far.

Improving The Industry For All

BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes highlights some of the industry initiatives being worked on that are making the wet leisure sector a more professional, inclusive and safer environment for all

play an important role in promoting safety near water and advocating for everyone to learn to swim. See page 33 for more details on this latest initiative.

Our industry has consistently played a key role in keeping people safe, and for many decades, this has been achieved through SPATA’s Standards and the ‘Cage of Safety’. To minimise the risk of injury when diving into a domestic swimming pool, the ‘Cage of Safety’ is a profile that ensures people diving from a fixed board or a springboard no greater than 0.5m above the pool water surface can do so safely. Peter Lang explains more about the ‘Cage of Safety’ in his article on page 32. Peter Lang has decided to step back from his Technical Advisor duties and there will be a handover to Alan Jackson in the coming months. There will be an article in the next issue of SPN reflecting on Peter’s influence and also welcoming Alan into this important industry role.

Since 1 June, both BISHTA and SPATA have new versions of their respective Standards for members to follow. The revision of the Standards has only been possible thanks to the dedication of the Technical Committees, chaired by Howard Gosling and Peter Lang, respectively. Members can access the standards in the online Member Hubs and the latest changes are in purple. Members can also view a recording of a separate BISHTA and SPATA webinar held in April that explains the main changes to both Standards.

New Appointments Strengthen Leadership Across The UK Pool And Spa Industry

The UK wet leisure industry is entering an important new chapter, one that is marked by a series of senior leadership appointments across its principal trade associations. In this piece, we highlight the recent changes to key positions

The British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF – www.bspf.org. uk), the Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association (SPATA – www.spata.co.uk), the British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association (BISHTA – www.bishta.co.uk), and the Pool Industry Promotions (PIP) committee have all confirmed new chairs and/or vice chairs, reinforcing collaboration continuity and strategic direction at a time of growing opportunity and responsibility for the sector.

Together, BSPF, SPATA, BISHTA and PIP represent the full breadth of the UK pool, spa, wellness and hot tub industries – encompassing commercial and domestic construction, manufacturing, retail, maintenance and industry promotion. While each organisation has a distinct remit, all are united by a shared commitment to raising standards, supporting members, influencing policy and promoting safe, sustainable and professional practice.

At the federation level, the BSPF brings together the sector specific associations to represent the industry’s collective voice, working closely with government, Standards bodies and key stakeholders. New BSPF President Dorian Davies Shares His Vision For The BSPF

With the BSPF proudly welcoming Dorian Davies as its new President, here we discover more about his background, his thoughts on key subjects and challenges, and where he hopes to strengthen the industry further

As the British Swimming Pool Federation (BSPF) looks ahead to the next phase of its development, it is proud to welcome Dorian Davies as its new President. Dorian officially took over from Dyfed Thompson-Smith at the Industry Gala Evening, held at SPATEX on 3 February 2026, and brings with him a strong background in marketing, communications, plus other key industry expertise.

Widely known across the wet leisure sector, as the Chair of BISHTA and through his company – Doric Marketing, Dorian steps into his two-year BSPF presidency with a clear focus on collaboration, effective communication, and championing professionalism across the industry.

Central to Dorian’s vision is a strong focus across all sectors of the wet leisure industry, with the BSPF uniquely positioned as the body that brings together SPATA (Swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association), BISHTA (British and Irish Spa and Hot Tub Association), SPATEX (the UK’s Wet Leisure Industry exhibition) and PIP (Pool Industry Promotions).

Here, he outlines his motivations for taking on the role and shares his priorities for his term of office.

BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATION

“My route into the wet leisure industry is perhaps a little different from the more technical paths many people take,” explained Dorian. “I come from a sales, marketing and communications background, which has allowed me to work closely with manufacturers, suppliers, and installers across the pool, spa, and hot tub sectors.”

Through Doric Marketing, Dorian has spent many years supporting wet leisure businesses with strategic marketing, brand development, and member communications, giving him broad insight into the sector. His involvement with BISHTA, culminating in his role as Chair, has strengthened his understanding of the importance of strong trade associations in maintaining standards, supporting members, and representing the industry externally.

“Serving as BISHTA Chair has really

reinforced to me how vital strong, wellrun associations are,” he added. “When the opportunity arose to take on the BSPF presidency, it felt like a natural next step. I’m passionate about ensuring our industry is well represented, well understood and proud of the high standards it delivers.”

KEY CHALLENGES AND PRIORITIES

Dorian is clear that the BSPF operates in a rapidly changing environment.

“We’re working against a backdrop of ongoing economic uncertainty, evolving regulation, and increasing scrutiny from consumers,” he noted. “One of my key priorities is ensuring the BSPF continues to be a clear, confident, and credible voice for our members.”

Raising awareness of the federation’s role and value is central to his approach. “There is fantastic work already being done by the BSPF, and my aim is to build on that by improving communication, clarity, and engagement – both within the membership and externally.”

Addressing the trade associations of SPATA and BISHTA, Dorian also highlights the importance of member support. “Our members range from small specialist businesses to larger organisations. Making sure the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA deliver relevant, practical and meaningful support to all of them is essential.”

COLLABORATION ACROSS THE SECTOR

With Dorian holding senior roles in both BSPF and the BISHTA, collaboration naturally features strongly in his plans.

“The wet leisure industry is at its strongest when organisations work together rather than in silos,” he said. “My dual involvement gives me an excellent opportunity to help align messaging, share knowledge and explore opportunities for closer working where appropriate.”

This collaborative mindset extends beyond the UK. “The BSPF already has strong relationships internationally, through EUSA (European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa

Dorian steps into his two-year BSPF presidency with a clear focus on collaboration, effective communication, and championing professionalism across the industry”

Associations) and WAPSA (World Alliance of Pool and Spa Associations), and I’m keen to strengthen these connections, share best practice and ensure the UK industry remains respected internationally,” he added.

PROMOTING PROFESSIONALISM, EDUCATION AND STANDARDS

Dorian places great emphasis on professionalism and education.

“Our industry has incredibly high standards, but we shouldn’t be shy about talking about them,” he explained. “Clear standards, quality training and strong codes of conduct help protect consumers and support reputable businesses.”

He sees the BSPF, working alongside SPATA and BISHTA, playing a crucial role in communicating this value. “Whether it’s through guidance documents, events or engagement with government and media, the BSPF has an important role in showing why choosing to work with SPATA and BISHTA members really matters.”

The BSPF also works closely with ISPE, the recognised Institute that deals with the training of swimming pool engineers and technicians.

The BSPF is also proud that the STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association) is a longterm member of the BSPF. The expertise of the STA has helped provide the industry with knowledge, qualifications and courses.

LOOKING AHEAD

Looking to the future, Dorian’s ambition is centred on continuity and evolution rather than radical change; while at the same time recognising the need for the Associations to adapt proactively with agility to changing market and regulatory landscapes, and anticipating future retail consumer and commercial operators’ needs and desires.

“The BSPF has strong foundations, thanks to the work of previous presidents and the federation board and team,” he said. “My goal is to build on that, making sure we remain relevant, visible and valuable to our members.”

As Dorian Davies begins his term, his combination of association leadership, industry knowledge, and communications expertise offers a confident and collaborative approach to guiding the BSPF through the years ahead.

POOL & SPA INDUSTRY

The SPATA Domestic Pool ‘Cage Of Safety’

After 25 years of invaluable service

to SPATA’s Technical Committee and National Council, SPATA Technical Advisor

Peter Lang offers some thoughts on the ‘Cage Of Safety’ for domestic pools before he retires later this year

The SPATA ‘Cage of Safety’, as we find it in the SPATA Standards, is considered necessary if diving into a pool from a fixed diving board (of a limited height above the water) is to be permitted.

The Cage of Safety is a notional body of water, positioned at the centre of the deep end of a domestic swimming pool, to minimise the chances of an accident while diving into the water. No part of the pool shell construction should protrude into this notional body of water.

It has been designed to give protection to an individual diving off a rigid diving board, typically positioned not more than 500mm above the water level in that pool.

This design feature predates SPATA Standards, as it was devised by members of the Association of Swimming Pool Contractors (ASPC) in the 1960s, eventually becoming SPATA in 1971. The earliest APSC minutes describe the attendees as ‘Messrs Gilbert, Pritchard, Rutherford, Gilliam, Gibson and the Secretary (Mr Parrott)’. The first Chairman was Mr Pritchard, and Mr Rutherford was appointed Vice Chairman. Each company had their own idea of the pool profile it preferred, and from that knowledge, the Cage of Safety evolved.

With the growing popularity of liner pools, starting to come into the UK from the USA, and with

advances in PVC material, the hopper pool design was born.

The hopper reduces the amount of spoil that has to be removed by the excavation, to reduce the chances of collapse of the profile and also it is good for diving. As can be seen from the drawings of the Cage of Safety, it is, in profile, similar to the hopper, although slightly larger.

The rigid diving board is positioned at the centre point of the deep end of the pool over the deepest part of the Cage of Safety. Diving from it should start by standing at the end of the board over the water. Divers should not run onto the board and make a dive of any sort. The dive should always be, either, where the body enters the water, arms and head first and as near to the perpendicular as possible. Flatter, starting dives and jumping in feet first, are also permitted, after some basic training has been carried out.

To date, SPATA is not aware of any recorded accidents involving diving off a rigid board into a domestic pool with the Cage of Safety profile.

However, diving into a domestic swimming pool, other than from a diving board, does happen. Consequently, it is worth pointing out that under Health and Safety Regulations, any person entering a domestic property of any sort should not be put at risk. For this reason, the industry in general recommends that pool installers should, amongst other things,

provide safety signage to their clients. This is included in the SPATA Standards at paragraph 1.60 and in Supplement 14 (Lifeguarding and Safety), especially paragraphs 14.2 and 14.3. Supplement 13 (Diving) also has very useful information throughout the document.

It is not necessarily up to installers to erect/position the safety signage. However, it would be expected of a pool professional that they point out to their clients whether the pool has been designed for diving and therefore whether it has a Cage of Safety and to confirm in the handover notes the dimensions of the pool and the water depths.

It is also generally recommended, by lifeguarding and other associated institutions, that it is far safer to carefully step into a pool, but that jumping in feet first into water is itself far safer than diving, especially if the water depth is not known or cannot be seen.

Not many years ago, there was a legal case reported, where a person had jumped/dived into a

friend’s pool and had suffered injuries. The pool owner was taken to Court. In evidence, the injured person admitted to using the pool several times before the accident. The Judge ruled that, in this case, the injured person was familiar with the pool and the injuries were the result of poor judgement and the case against the homeowner was dismissed. If the pool owner wants to use a higher board or a springboard, then World Aquatics (formerly FINA – Federation Internationale de Natation – www.worldaquatics.com) Regulations should be consulted. They are referenced in Supplement 13 of the Standards. Where diving from the poolside (and not from a diving board) is undertaken, the pool installer must indicate to the pool owner (in writing) whether it is permitted to dive and, if so, from where it is safe to do so on the pool surround.

Phone Float Throw

The new Respect The Water campaign by the National Water Safety Forum empowers people to take safe action if they see someone in trouble in the water. Here, we take a closer look at the campaign and its concept

If we see someone in trouble in the water, our instinct can often be to jump in to try and save them. But entering the water is dangerous and can put members of the public at risk of drowning too. Phone Float Throw, the new Respect The Water campaign from the National Water Safety Forum, encourages bystanders witnessing a waterbased incident to take positive action without putting themselves in danger.

Every year, people across the UK witness somebody else get into difficulty in the water. In the first few seconds of a water-based incident, these bystanders have the potential to play a crucial, lifesaving role. But without clear, memorable guidance, the instinct to help can unintentionally put both the responder and the person in difficulty at even greater risk.

In 2025, the National Water Safety Forum (NWSF) partnered with behaviour change agency Claremont Communications to review existing bystander rescue messaging and analyse its effectiveness. Research conducted with both public and stakeholder groups revealed that comprehension of the established instructions (“Call, Tell, Throw”) was limited, with terms open to misinterpretation and liable to cause confusion among the intended audience. Phone Float Throw emerged from this review as a clearer, more widely understood phrase that better reinforced instructions for bystanders.

When presented with various creative concepts, both stakeholders and the public gravitated towards straightforward ideas that foregrounded the instructions and that didn’t overcomplicate the message. Using this evidence as a foundation, Claremont Communications developed a new campaign that centres the universally recognised symbol of a life ring. The simple, striking image of a life ring acts as a clear visual clue, immediately associating the Phone Float Throw instructions with water-based rescue in the mind of the viewer.

The Phone Float Throw campaign launched publicly in April 2026 and will run throughout the summer. The NWSF are encouraging wet leisure providers to support

the campaign by sharing the message with their audiences and networks. A suite of high impact materials is available for leisure providers to use and adapt for their own communications, including static and animated social media assets, co-brandable posters and detailed guidance on how to apply the campaign across various platforms and channels. All resources are free and available to download from the Respect The Water website.

On average, each year, 282 people lose their lives due to an accidental waterrelated fatality in the UK, with many more lives permanently changed by the impact of accidental drowning. This year, and in recent weeks, there have already been a number of tragic incidents making the news. Effective water safety campaigns have the power to help reduce this devastating loss of life. By working together as a sector to share and embed this single cohesive message, leisure providers and water safety practitioners can ensure these instructions reach as broad an audience as possible, empowering bystanders witnessing a waterbased incident to act without endangering

themselves and ensuring more people are able to enjoy their time in and around the water safely.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Wet leisure providers can support the Phone Float Throw campaign by sharing the message across their channels and networks. Free resources – including social media graphics, posters and a digital 6 sheet – are available to download from the Respect The Water website: respectthewater.com/phonefloat-throw.

The campaign is supported by the Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI), the Royal Lifesaving Society UK (RLSS UK), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, Surf Life Saving GB, the National Fire Chief’s Council, Swim England and the Swimming Teachers’ Association, among others.

The SPATEX Foundation –Working For The Good Of Us All

In this latest issue, we take a closer look at the SPATEX Foundation – an initiative which through the success of the UK’s annual exhibition, is able to give back to the industry through giving grants – and also highlight some of the beneficiaries of the scheme

SPATEX 2026’s double seminar programme – a central feature of the UK’s annual exhibition – this year served to amplify the integral role that the show’s Foundation plays in the wider industry. Following its valuable funding of two major research projects, speakers from Coventry and Portsmouth Universities delivered their much-awaited key findings to invested delegates, eager for the latest information.

WHAT IS THE SPATEX FOUNDATION?

Since conception, SPATEX has lived by its mission statement: ‘By the industry, For the Industry’. Generating a staggering £2m over the course of 30 shows, the SPATEX Foundation was established six years ago to formalise the ethos of generously giving back to the industry it serves through grant giving. Two recent beneficiaries of Foundation funding reinforced in their SPATEX 2026 seminars just how vital its support of their studies has been. Knowledge is wealth! Keeping its finger on the pulse and supporting research, the SPATEX Foundation is helping not just those working in the industry, but all those partaking in water leisure activities too.

HOT TUB RESEARCH FOR OLDIES!

The UN has forecast that by the end of this century there will be more people over 65 than those under 25. With an aging population and current research mainly focused on younger healthy individuals, University of Portsmouth PhD student, Daniel Piccolo chose to study the effects of hot tub sessions on cardiovascular, cognitive, blood pressure, blood biomarkers and muscle strength and function in adults aged 55-85. The 18-week study split the group into two controls – one continued their day-to-day life

and the other undertook controlled passive heating – use of a hot tub in the laboratory over six weeks. Following a six-week break, the control conditions were swapped to give fair research.

The research found that whilst there was limited effect on cardiovascular measures, there are several benefits for older adults that cannot participate in exercise including improvements in cognitive performance –reaction time, logic and memory. There are also encouraging early indications that use of hot tubs improves mobility and daily function.

Daniel and his colleagues are working on several manuscripts for scientific journals currently under review, furthering the work on the positive effects of hot tub use on cognitive function and muscle function.

A DEEP DIVE INTO COLD WATER THERAPY

A second recipient of Foundation funding, Dr. C Doug Thake, an Applied Human Physiologist at Coventry University, gave an illuminating talk on the trend for cold water immersion (ice baths and plunge pools) and whether its perceived benefits – such as reduced stress, improved mood, better sleep, pain relief and enhanced immunity – stack up.

Initial findings from the study indicate cold water immersion shows strong perceived benefits for mental and physical health, but more rigorous scientific research is needed to determine true effectiveness, optimal exposure and mechanisms.

Coventry University is continuing its investigations with a collaboration on

thermography in a lab-based pilot study. The research aims to develop optimum temperature and exposure duration in relation to mood enhancement. They hope to present their findings at SPATEX 2027.

“Overall, cold water immersion has promising potential, but evidence-based guidelines are still developing,” advised Doug. Both presentations, along with the full SPATEX 2026 seminar programme, can be freely viewed on the SPATEX website).

KEEPING ABREAST OF THE TIMES

A previous recipient of the SPATEX Foundation, Alex Blackwell (Group Head of Facilities and Operations) at Water Babies said: “I would recommend any individual or organisation looking to carry out research or a project that supports the leisure and swimming pool industry to apply to the SPATEX Foundation for funding. The process was easy to complete, with a quick response to the application, and support and dialogue throughout.”

THE FOUNDATION WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM THE INDUSTRY

Applications for assistance from the SPATEX Foundation can be made under the following four criteria:

• Training – e.g. to fund a course or to apply for a training bursary.

• Education – e.g. to develop a course, or to provide suitable materials that would benefit the industry.

• Research – the industry may be asked by multi-agency groups to contribute towards the cost of important research.

• Other support – this could include other bids from groups or individuals that can demonstrate the relevance of their application.

Forms can be downloaded via the SPATEX website and will be reviewed quarterly by the board and a formal decision made.

Raising Awareness Of Surface Risks In Wet Leisure Environments

With hygiene always high on the priority list for any wet leisure environment, here, Robbie Philips, Pool Plant Consultant and STA Tutor looks at the importance of maintaining the surrounding areas and ensuring a whole-facility approach to hygiene management

Across wet leisure environments, maintaining safe and hygienic facilities is a core operational priority. While significant attention is given to water quality and plant operations, increasing focus is now being placed on the condition of surrounding surfaces, particularly rubber crumb flooring, as a potential and often overlooked source of risk.

Rubber crumb surfaces are widely used across pool surrounds, walkways and changing areas due to their slip-resistant properties. When correctly installed and maintained, they provide a durable and safe finish. However, recent site investigation findings have highlighted that, over time, these surfaces can deteriorate in ways that may introduce both bacterial and chemical risks within high-contact public environments.

UNDERSTANDING THE RISK

As rubber crumb surfaces age, the integrity of their protective seal can break down. Once compromised, the material becomes porous and absorbent. In wet leisure settings, where moisture, organic matter and frequent foot traffic are constant factors, this creates conditions where contamination can develop below the surface.

The investigation identified elevated levels of bacterial presence across poolside walkways and seating areas, alongside visible surface wear. There was also evidence to suggest that, as materials degrade, there is potential for irritants to be released. In some cases, this had coincided with reports of skin irritation, particularly on feet and areas in direct contact with flooring.

Importantly, these risks may not be immediately apparent through standard operational checks. Water quality may remain within acceptable parameters, while surface contamination develops independently. This can create a false sense of security if surrounding environments are not considered as part of a wider hygiene strategy.

A WIDER FACILITY CONSIDERATION

While pool surrounds are an obvious point of focus, similar conditions can exist across other areas within a leisure facility. Any environment combining moisture, shared use

and direct surface contact has the potential to contribute to wider hygiene concerns if materials are degraded or poorly maintained.

Pool plant rooms and wet operational areas are subject to high humidity and water exposure, which can accelerate surface wear. Spa and wellness environments involve prolonged skin contact with surrounding materials. Movement between wet and dry areas can also introduce cross-contamination pathways if controls are not in place.

Equipment such as inflatables, which frequently come into contact with poolside flooring, can transfer contamination between surfaces and water if not cleaned and properly managed. Sensitive areas such as changing and nappy change facilities also require particular attention.

STRENGTHENING HYGIENE MANAGEMENT

These findings reinforce the importance of adopting a whole-facility approach to hygiene management. Surfaces should be considered alongside water systems as part of a comprehensive risk assessment, rather than as a separate concern.

Routine inspection is essential. Early signs of deterioration, including loss of sealing or surface wear, should be addressed before conditions worsen. Where necessary, resealing or replacement should be prioritised.

Cleaning protocols should also be reviewed to ensure they are appropriate for the environment and level of use. Effective approaches may include soft pressure washing, suitable cleaning agents and sufficient contact

Any environment combining moisture, shared use and direct surface contact has the potential to contribute to wider hygiene concerns if materials are degraded or poorly maintained”

time for disinfection. The use of wet vacuum systems can help prevent the spread of contaminated water during cleaning.

Surface testing provides an additional layer of assurance. Real-time surface swab testing can immediately identify bacterial growth. Regular testing of high-contact areas also helps operators monitor hygiene standards and identify emerging issues early.

THE ROLE OF TRAINING AND COMPETENCE

As with all aspects of pool plant and facility management, the effectiveness of control measures relies on the competency of those responsible for implementing them. Staff should understand how surface materials behave in wet environments, how contamination develops and how risks can be controlled.

Clear procedures for inspection, cleaning, monitoring and reporting are essential, supported by appropriate training to ensure consistent standards are maintained.

RAISING INDUSTRY AWARENESS

Rubber crumb surfaces are often viewed as a reliable and low-maintenance solution. However, as this investigation highlights, their condition can change significantly over time, particularly in demanding wet leisure environments.

Raising awareness across the sector is key to ensuring these risks are recognised and managed effectively. By considering surface condition as an integral part of hygiene and safety, operators can take earlier action and maintain confidence in their facilities.

The condition of flooring in wet leisure environments should be treated with the same level of importance as water quality. Well-maintained surfaces support both safety and hygiene, while degraded materials can undermine them.

A proactive approach to inspection, maintenance and training will help operators strengthen standards, reduce avoidable risks and protect public health.

Aquatic Provision At The Heart Of Area’s Regeneration

facility, London

The new Woolwich Waves

South London’s Woolwich Waves project marks a significant step forward in the design and delivery of contemporary leisure facilities, combining architectural quality with a strong social purpose. Positioned at the centre of Woolwich’s regeneration, the £80m development replaces the outdated Waterfront Leisure Centre with a modern, multi-functional hub designed to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community.

Designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects and delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction for the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the threestorey building is a stacked layout enabling a broad mix of facilities to sit cohesively under one roof, while maintaining clear circulation and maximised capacity. The centre includes a 25-metre, eight-lane fitness pool, a training pool, a leisure pool with flumes and a splash zone, alongside a spa, two-storey gym, studios, squash courts, a

six-court sports hall, soft play, café and a rooftop five-a-side pitch, creating a true all-age destination.

Community input has been central to the project, from early consultation through to the public vote that named the building, embedding a strong sense of local ownership. This people-first approach is reflected in the emphasis on accessibility, with features such as pool pods, inclusive changing spaces and Changing Places facilities ensuring the environment is welcoming, dignified and usable for all. Sustainability is equally embedded, with the building targeting BREEAM Outstanding through renewable technologies including solar generation and air source heat pumps.

A key contributor to the centre’s success is its carefully considered aquatic provision, which complements the wider facility mix by attracting high volumes of visitors and encouraging repeat use. The leisure pool has been designed as a layered water play environment, integrating interactive features, a choice of zero and shallow water depths and high-energy attractions within a cohesive, inclusive space. Slides, overhead spray elements, bubbling jets and splash zones combine to create a dynamic setting that encourages movement, social interaction and extended dwell time.

At Woolwich Waves, shallow splash areas with gentle gradients support younger children and less confident swimmers, while flumes and more energetic features provide excitement for older users. The careful balance between these elements allows multiple age groups to use and enjoy the space simultaneously, reinforcing a shared,

inclusive environment that supports both active play and social interaction.

Equally important is the operational design. Clear sightlines enable effective supervision, while the distribution of attractions reduces congestion and maintains a steady flow of users. This ensures the environment remains safe and manageable, even at peak times, while still delivering a vibrant and engaging experience.

Visitor feedback has highlighted the success of this approach. Early users have responded positively to the variety and accessibility of the aquatic offer, with the leisure pool and splash areas frequently described as standout features. Family swim sessions in particular have become a focal point of activity, demonstrating the ability of well-designed water play to bring different generations together in a single space.

This strong user response is reflected in early visitor data. Within the first few days of opening, around 6,000 visitors were drawn specifically to the flumes and splash zone areas, underlining the immediate appeal of these features. More broadly, the centre has recorded approximately 90,000 visits to its pools in its early operational phase, with aquatic play accounting for a significant proportion of this demand.

High-quality aquatic play sits at the heart of Woolwich Waves, complementing a strong mix of facilities to create an inclusive, highperforming destination and a vibrant hub of activity that continues to be embraced by its community.

Bringing The Heat In 2026

The heating of water within pools and spas of all sizes can be achieved in a variety of ways, but heat pumps are the go-to choice for many due to their economic operation and environmentally friendly credentials. There’s plenty of options available too with numerous manufacturers providing these energy efficient solutions. With new or improved models joining some existing favourites for 2026, we take a closer look at what’s hot in the sector

For many wet leisure installations across the country, heat pumps have long been seen as the ideal solution to heating water efficiently. For some outdoor projects, that will also mean extending the regularly seen short pool seasons found here in the UK too.

With models producing many times more energy than they consume, heat pumps effortlessly outperform many other types of heating methods – so it’s easy to see why they’ve been such a popular choice for both owners and installers alike.

Over recent years, models have become increasingly sophisticated and intelligent in their operation, resulting in higher performance ratings leading to impressive energy savings. The majority of marketleading designs now feature some form of inverter technology and most can now also be controlled and monitored remotely via smart device apps too. As the technology improves, so too has their performance, cost savings, eco-friendly credentials, flexibility, ease of use and even their looks – in short, it’s a winning combination of factors that are hard to ignore – something which has only further added to their appeal!

from as low as 10°C outdoor air temperature. With a COP of 5.4, owners get over five times the heat output for every pound spent on electricity.

a compact design.

With various brands, models and options available from a range of manufacturers and suppliers, there’s a perfect heat pump solution on offer for virtually any pool or spa configuration.

So, with options aplenty on offer, in this issue, we take a closer look at just some of the models that are bringing the heat for this season and beyond.

THE POOLEX NANO – AN IDEAL SOLUTION FOR SMALLER POOLS

Available through AES, the Poolex Nano is a compact and reversible heat pump, designed to heat or cool pools up to 30m³. Thanks to its heating/cooling mode, it maintains the ideal water temperature throughout the spring, summer or autumn seasons. In summer, the cooling function is ideal to prevent overheating in sun-exposed pools and to protect liners and other surfaces.

During the off-season or in spring, it efficiently raises water temperature, starting

Easy to install with its Plug & Play system, it simply connects to a standard outlet and is suitable for a variety of small pools – aboveground, wooden or in-ground. Compatible with saltwater treatments and equipped with a corrosion-resistant titanium heat exchanger and standard 32/38mm connections, it easily integrates into most existing setups and ensures long-lasting, worry-free operation.

One of the standout features of the Z550iQ is its compact footprint and vertical airflow design, allowing it to fit into the smallest of spaces – requiring half the space of standard heat pumps. Its anti-corrosion polypropylene housing ensures durability, even in the UK’s variable climate.

The unit operates quietly, thanks to its full Inverter technology and Heatselect modes: Boost for rapid heating, Smart for automatic power adjustment, and Ecosilence for energysaving, low-noise operation. This versatility allows users to balance performance and efficiency according to their needs.

The Z550iQ integrates seamlessly with the Fluidra Pool app, enabling remote control and monitoring via smartphone or tablet. This feature allows users to adjust settings and monitor performance from anywhere, enhancing convenience and control. Also, once connected, the Z550iQ benefits from continuous improvements thanks to remote automatic updates.

Designed for pools up to 110m³, the Z550iQ is suitable for various pool types, including in-ground, semi-in-ground and above-ground installations. Its

Quiet (<30 dB at 10m) and discreet, the Poolex Nano fits into small spaces without disrupting the sound or visual environment. Its compact size (under 40cm in height) makes it perfect for small gardens, patios or tight areas.

Equipped with an integrated Wi-Fi module, it can be easily controlled remotely via the Poolex app (available on iOS and Android). This simple, intuitive interface allows users to remotely start/stop the Nano, adjust the temperature, choose modes (heating, cooling, automatic) and view performance from their smartphone for easier use and simplified daily maintenance – easy, efficient control anytime.

THE X20 IS THE LATEST SHOW STOPPER AT GOLDEN COAST

At Golden Coast, they certainly know a thing

or two about heat pumps. In fact, with more than 40 models in stock, they’re proud to boast about what they say is the biggest range for the UK wet leisure market. From compact devices suitable for hot tubs and swim spas to heavy-duty systems designed for commercial pools, there’s something to suit every project and build.

In 2026 we all want to make sure that the technology we are using is environmentallyresponsible as well as effective and reliable, which is where the coefficient of performance, or COP, comes in. Essentially, this is a ratio that measures how effectively a pump shifts heat from place to place.

For years, Golden Coast has been proud to stock products that rank towards the highest end of the spectrum.

Now they’re taking things to the next level as sole European distributors for Fairland’s new X20 – one of only a handful of heat pumps on the market with a COP of 20. Utilising full-inverter technology, the X20 combines the inverter-compressor with extreme 3D heat-exchanging tech to maximise COP performance – resulting in a powerful, efficient unit with almostsilent operation. The X20 also comes with a market-leading seven-year warranty, guaranteeing absolute peace of mind with every installation.

AQUARIUS – A SMART CHOICE FOR OUTDOOR POOL HEATING

Heatstar is a leading global manufacturer of high quality ventilation, heating and dehumidification products and systems. All their products are designed and manufactured to the highest standards of sustainability, energy efficiency and environmental performance, while maintaining ease of installation and

maintenance, as exemplified by Heatstar’s pool water heating solution, the Aquarius.

The Aquarius is a reliable system that is based around proven and reliable refrigeration technology. It utilises ‘direct contact’ technology to transfer heat from the refrigerant directly into the pool water and also incorporates an ultra-quiet ‘low energy’ digital fan. The Aquarius offers pool owners comfort, efficiency and low energy costs while being clean, safe and environmentally friendly.

The Aquarius has been developed with quality in mind and comprises a number of market-leading components including a high efficiency orbital scroll compressor and special titanium heat exchanger. This unit comes with all the features the pool trade have become accustomed to with a Heatstar system, such as an easy-to-use controls and low energy digital fans to ensure operational noise is reduced to an absolute minimum. It is made of the very best materials with first class workmanship. In fact, Heatstar have such confidence in the quality of the Aquarius that they offer a 20-year anticorrosion guarantee on its heat exchanger plus a 20-year guarantee on the anodised aluminium chassis too.

Each unit comes in a no maintenance, weatherproof, anodised aluminium skeleton frame with access panels formed from robust galvanised steel, with a tough PVC coating to prevent against corrosion. This provides maximum strength and ensures a long operational life of the unit.

The Aquarius range also extends to encompass large capacity models for nonresidential pool applications so for projects both residential and commercial, where a heat pump solution offering assured longterm durability and genuine quality is a priority, the Aquarius is an obvious solution.

GET CONNECTED WITH POLYTROPIC HEAT PUMPS FROM LIGHTHOUSE

Lighthouse are Polytropic’s exclusive partner for the UK and supply the full range from the brand.

All Polytropic heat pumps come with a full five-year parts and labour warranty, are supported by an active remote monitoring system and are connected to the UK’s 4G mobile phone network. This means that in-house Lighthouse technicians based in Plymouth are able to access each unit remotely, reporting back to the trade professionals on the status of the heat pump.

This innovative system ensures all Polytropic heat pumps are set up and operating to give the optimum performance, any faults are diagnosed quickly and brings a reassuring, new level of customer service.

With a heat pump for most requirements, the extensive range features products for both pools and spas, with a couple of the highlights being the distinctive looking

Master Inverter, which thanks to its smart, exclusive regulation system, manages its power depending on the water temperature but also depending on the surrounding air temperature. This always guarantees the right bathing temperature, the best possible COP and the lowest sound level!

Then there’s the Ottimo model. Inverter technology, smart design and vertical air discharge make this model a compact and discreet choice that is perfect for tight spaces.

Due to the successful relationship, Lighthouse also offer the HeatForm Inverter heat pump which has been developed in conjunction with Polytropic and has been designed to offer an attractive and reliable heat pump to sit within Lighthouse’s expanding HeatForm product range.

Each HeatForm Inverter heat pump is set up for Lighthouse’s unique remote monitoring scheme, can operate down to -3° and comes with a three-year parts and labour warranty.

ONE MODEL TYPE IS ALL THAT’S NEEDED AT OCEA UK

As a growing business, Ocea UK are incredibly selective in what products they offer to the pool trade – who are integral direct representatives of these products to pool owners. With several decades of industry experience within the business, Ocea UK’s buying team handpick products of premium quality and this includes the successful addition of the Inverter Vertical Heat Pump. This configuration offers distinct advantages over traditional horizontal outlet models, particularly in terms of a reduced footprint, ease of installation and minimising cold air recirculation, ultimately leading to enhanced performance and user satisfaction.

One of the primary benefits of Ocea UK’s vertical outlet heat pumps lies in

their simplified installation process. Unlike horizontal units that often require careful consideration of surrounding obstacles and directional airflow, the vertical design offers greater flexibility and the orientation can, in many instances, lead to more direct and less complex pipework runs to and from the pool or spa.

With its vertical output, this all-season heat pump can be positioned as little as 500mm away from buildings and plant rooms. Powered by inverter technology, the range starts at 10kW all the way up to 35kW and the entire range enjoys the same exclusive benefits, with COP up to 16. Each model has three modes: Turbo, Smart and Silence.

So having found a heat pump that not only performs to a high level, but is energy saving and is also 15 times quieter than a standard model, this is the only heat pump found in the Ocea-X range. This is due to its reliability, efficiency, performance and value for money.

ENJOY EXCLUSIVE FAIRLAND MODELS FROM SCP

Last year, SCP UK introduced four new and exclusive Fairland AquaX heat pump models – the Cool and Heat AquaX Essential, the AquaX 20 Reversible and AquaX Turbo Silence Vertical – all of which are suitable for domestic projects and available in a range of sizes – plus the AquaX Jumbo for commercial pools, which comes in two sizes.

Concentrating on the domestic models, all three incorporate a ‘Cool & Heat’ function and offer four-season functionality (request sizing for all year use), with the AquaX 20 Reversible model operating from temperatures as low as -20°C. This model also achieves COP 20 – a new industry standard for energy efficiency – with 1kW consumed becoming up to 20kW maximum in the pool.

All are extremely quiet in their operation, with the AquaX 20 Reversible and AquaX

Turbo Silence Vertical models featuring TurboSilence inverter technology which is an optimised version of Fairland’s original Fullinverter technology.

This perfectly balances the inverter / compressor / control and heat exchanging technology, which creates the turbo performance and silent operation at the same time.

For ease of operation, each model includes a digital control panel plus there’s built in Wi-Fi which ensures simple remote control via an app.

New for 2026, SCP have announced that their Fairland heat pump range will be further expanded with the introduction of a new iGarden X26 model. Offered in three

sizes and with limited quantities available, thanks to pioneering TurboSilence26 technology, Fairland is ushering in a new heat pump era with COP 30 performance and highly efficient and eco-friendly R290 refrigerant.

Illuminating Options For Wet Leisure Environments

One sector that has developed at a impressive rate over recent years is that of lighting, and thanks to the latest innovative and energy saving technologies, plus some highly creative planning ideas, numerous lighting options are now enhancing a wide variety of wet leisure environments of all sizes and creating stunning and welcoming settings. With solutions for both in and out of the water, we take a look at some of the latest products

With a wide variety of options available for an ever widening range of wet leisure settings, it’s fair to say that the current lighting technologies for water-based environments have played a huge part in transforming the looks of many of today’s installations in both domestic and commercial settings, allowing them to be seen in their best possible light and making them more appealing places to both frequent and spend more leisure time in.

As with any kind of solution that features technology at its core, improvements are made on a continual basis and time has definitely not stood still for the options found within the lighting sector. Powerful and efficient LEDs have long been the accepted choice of professionals across a variety of projects and offer a far more sustainable solution, longer service life and perhaps most importantly, they consume significantly less energy to work resulting in reduced bills. All round, they are a much more eco-friendly solution, plus they provide enhanced visual benefits which greatly assists with safety – a fact that is particularly beneficial within the varied commercial settings that are available today.

Beyond these improved practical benefits, an increasing number of designers and installers have realised that a mix of cleverly installed lighting can provide dramatic effects for pools, spas and other settings – both internally and externally – enhancing key features, softening walls and linking zones together.

What’s more, the technology to control or programme lighting has also come on leaps and bounds, so creating the right ambience has never been simpler.

In short, whether old or new, complete areas can be created or improved through the use of thoughtful and imaginative lighting – providing safety and style whilst reducing running costs over the product’s lifetime.

With plenty of options available on the market from a variety of manufacturers, this issue, we take look at some of the illuminating solutions on offer.

CERTIKIN – A LEADING LIGHT IN SWIMMING POOL ILLUMINATION

Over the years, Certikin have continued to develop an ever-expanding lighting range which includes the successful PU2 mini LED light, alongside the Certikin PU9 and PU6, some of the most popular and reliable lights in the industry.

The company are keen to remain at the forefront of lighting design and deliver products that the industry demand. In addition to the existing stainless steel finish, the PU2 is now available with a black fascia, ideal for pools with a darker finish. Still manufactured in stainless steel, the dark finish is achieved through the application of a hard-wearing, black coating.

The range has also been extended further with the addition of a variable white LED.

This gives the ability to set a specific white colour temperature, from a warm white of approximately 2900K to a cool white of approximately 5100K. In addition, the lights are dimmable between 100% and 5%.

Another addition this year is the PU3 LED range. These large LED push fit lights (177mm diameter for concrete and 199mm for liner pools) are niche-less and like the smaller PU2 range (at 72mm for concrete

and 98mm for liner pools) are available in either the stainless steel or black finish.

The PU3 lights deliver approximately 2,150 lumens which is brighter than the equivalent larger PU6 light and means only one light is required for 20m2

For installations of the PU2 lights, Certikin recommend one light per 8m2

Both the PU2 and PU3 lights offer simple installation solutions with a high output and a neat finish. Certikin offer different LED options across both the PU2 and PU3 lights, with both ranges available in either RGBW or white, alongside the new variable white option for the PU2 range. The RGBW and variable white versions are controllable via a smartphone using the free app, giving control over colour, sequences and brightness.

WATER-TEC LIGHTING OPTIONS SUIT A WIDE RANGE OF SETTINGS

LED lighting is now the go-to option for swimming pool lighting as it offers the safest, most cost-effective option. The Water-Tec light range features options for either Warm or Cool lenses and standard 20m cable length. All are controllable to suit the mood / ambience of the pool with both Wi-Fi and / or a smart device (both White and RGB) options.

Above-ground Options Offering Summer Value

Despite tough competition from other wet leisure products, there’s always demand for above-ground pools in the UK. Available in a range of materials, the idea behind these mainly smaller, entry-level solutions is cost effectiveness combined with straightforward installation that will provide many hours of garden fun for UK families. With plenty of options available this

year, we take a look at the ever-popular value for money options

The above-ground pools sector –which includes wooden pools, lined metal-framed pools and a lot more too these days – has been a popular choice for many years, and that’s not just been down to their relatively affordable price tag versus other, similar options. Size and flexibility combined in an easy to use and simple to install package have also been key to their continued success.

One of the biggest appealing factors of these pools is that they are within reach of those families who dream of getting on the ‘pool owning ladder’ and it’s this mix of cost and convenience which has increasingly resonated with UK consumers, especially those on a budget.

For families with plans of longer term pool ownership, a little imagination and landscaping can mean that the options available for these versatile projects can quite literally transform even the smallest of garden spaces and provide hours of enjoyment and relaxation for their owners. When space isn’t an issue, and if family fun is the top priority, above-ground options can provide most of the benefits of a full sized permanent pool, but for a much lower cost.

Increasingly these pool options have been sought by families or owners who want to make the pool into a real feature in their garden and some are sunk partially or

sometimes fully into the ground with decking and landscaping really finishing the project off in often very impressive ways.

The ease of installing them is a big advantage over other types of pools too, and with projects taking just a few days or in some cases, being delivered complete and being ‘Plug & Play’, above-ground pools are a quick to implement and great optional extra for any garden space and can often mean they are an impulse buy to satisfy the needs of families who, more often than not, have young children to keep entertained.

With so much going for them, it’s no wonder that the British public has started to look at the more serious above-ground and wooden pools as an investment for both their families and gardens. Here we take a look at some of the latest options that tick the boxes in the above-ground sector.

EXPERIENCE ITALIAN DESIGN WITH PISCINE LAGHETTO ABOVEGROUND POOLS

Established over 50 years ago, Piscine Laghetto® has always stood out for its ability to understand and anticipate the trends and expectations of its customers, striving to offer products that are technically excellent and at the same time iconic and design orientated. Over the years, the company has strived to create pools that become a piece of furniture

which fit seamlessly into the garden, terrace or even inside the home.

One of the most popular models is the Dolcevita, an above-ground pool that not only looks stylish but is also functional and easy to assemble. A distinctive feature of the pools are the uniquely designed panels.

The panelling consists of a structure made from Magnelis steel onto which a synthetic polypropylene fibre obtained by extrusion is woven by hand. It is this craftmanship which gives each pool a unique appearance and make it stand out from other pools in the market.

The Divina pool range offers a semiin-ground solution that harmoniously integrates with modern landscapes. Requiring minimal excavation, Divina pools can be installed quickly and easily without constructing containment walls, thanks to their self-supporting structure and side steel panels. Divina pools come with an integrated technical room which is under one end of the pool. The cover is load-bearing and has cushions as standard, making it a spacious sunbathing area. With options for hand-woven wicker panels in various colours and a wide range of sizes, each pool can be tailored to reflect individual tastes and complement specific outdoor settings.

Part of Fluidra, Laghetto Pools are available exclusively in the UK from AstralPool.

PLASTICA WOODEN POOLS HELP TO SIMPLIFY INSTALLATIONS

Above-ground pools continue to perform strongly across the UK wet leisure sector, offering a cost-effective, space-efficient solution that is quick to install. Wooden pools, in particular, deliver straightforward installation, and a natural timber finish that enhances most garden settings. trade and end consumer.

Each pool is manufactured from precisioncut, pressure-treated timber sourced from approved suppliers, providing long-term resistance to rot, fungal decay and insect damage. All wooden structures are backed by a ten-year pro-rata warranty, and Plastica has extended its liner warranty from five to ten years – adding further reassurance for both installers and end users.

The standard wooden pool package includes everything required for an installation: timber structure, iFlo filtration with glass media, liner with foam underlay, solar cover, pipework, fittings, plus chemical and maintenance starter kits. Metal support braces are included where required, with the option to specify at point of order to suit the

groundworks. All components are delivered in a single shipment, helping streamline logistics and reduce time on site.

Plastica offers bespoke wooden pools, enabling installers to meet non-standard requirements to deliver tailored solutions.

The NAZCA range remains a popular choice for quick-turnaround projects and is now available in new 6 x 3m and 6 x 4m sizes. For customers who don’t want to install a concrete base, the Exercise Pool features a built-in stainless steel strap system, removing the need for bracing. At the premium end, the Chelsea model offers a 5 x 10m internal size for larger-scale projects.

With UK-based manufacturing, strong technical support and reliable lead times, Plastica delivers a wooden pool range that combines ease of installation, visual appeal and solid profit potential.

A Time To Chill

Over the last few years, the cold water therapy side of the wet leisure sector has gained real traction thanks to high-profile media coverage detailing the many benefits that it provides. Whilst still a niche sector, the resulting wave of new products made available, especially from manufacturers within the hot tub sector, was almost inevitable, and in this issue, we take a closer look at just some of the available options

Despite being a practice that has been around for centuries, the wet leisure industry has seen an explosion of cold water therapy options over recent years.

There’s many names being used across the industry for these products – ice baths, plunge pools and cold tubs to name just a few – plus there’s also solutions which combine both cold and hot environments too. Whatever the term used for the product, they are all referring to the immersion of the body into a product which contains cold water of 15°C or less.

Immersion in cold water provides a number of physical and mental benefits. These include but aren’t limited to: improved support for the immune system, stress reduction due to the release of dopamine, improved sleep quality, pain relief and improved recovery time for certain injuries, plus an improved metabolism for weight management.

These benefits have meant in more recent times, cold water therapy has been used primarily by athletes, but also by those in the know too. However, due to increased mainstream media exposure highlighting the many benefits that cold water therapy provides, along with social media and wellness influencers amplifying the hype,

more people are now taking a much closer look at products in the sector and the range of benefits that products containing chilled water afford.

So with cold water therapy products looking like a trend that is set to continue through 2026 and beyond, in this issue, we put a number of the options that are currently available under the spotlight.

CERTIKIN’S HARVIA FROSTY OFFERS COLD THERAPY FOR BODY AND MIND

Regularly exposing the body to cold water for short periods of time brings several health benefits, however, this mode of therapy has typically only been available for professional athletes and people visiting spas and swimming halls – and, of course, people doing ice swimming during the winter – but having access to an always-ready cold ice tub is an excellent way to achieve these health benefits.

Available from Certikin, Harvia Frosty is a cold plunge enabling this healthy practice to be part of a user’s daily routine in the comfort of their own home. Harvia Frosty is always ready to be used and owners can easily adjust the water to the desired temperature, the lowest being 4°C.

The oval-shaped Harvia Frosty cold tub comfortably fits two people, also enabling

a shared moment to take care of the users wellbeing. Harvia Frosty is made of highquality materials that are safe to use, feel comfortable on the skin, and are easy to maintain. Harvia Frosty always comes with an insulated cover to maintain the desired temperature energy-efficiently and improve safety by keeping children out of the ice pool. Both the pool and the cooling unit come with a warranty of two years.

UK MADE, PORTABLE AND FIXED SOLUTIONS FROM SPAFLO

Durable, weather resistant and visually appealing, all of SpaFlo’s cold plunge pools are perfectly handcrafted to bespoke specifications and can be elegantly illuminated for the perfect experience, providing a seamless addition to both indoor and outdoor spaces.

If a portable stainless steel solution is required, there’s the ContraSpa option.

Created by SpaFlo’s founder Richard Gowland, ContraSpa was unveiled in 2024 at SPATEX after he identified a gap in the market for a high-quality, dual use, single shell spa that provides hot and cold water

The luxury spa design is based on the company’s logo and ethos, with a unique Ying / Yang separating the water whilst allowing easy access through cleverly integrated steps.

The spa is made of UK sourced sustainable commercial grade steel, and clever lighting highlights the hot and cold areas, ensuring it looks beautiful. Controls are Wi-Fi and touchscreen enabled ensuring the ultimate in ease of use and flexibility.

Speaking at the time of its launch, Richard Gowland said: “Health through water is at the heart of what we do. Spas, pools and water features all have their unique wellbeing properties. In contrast, water wellbeing has been around for many years. I am delighted to launch the first ever single shell and dual use UK contrast therapy water spa to market to help people benefit from the wide-ranging advantages of cold and hot water therapy from their homes.”

IT’S ONWARDS AND UPWARDS TO SPATEX 2027

Flushed with the resounding success of its 30th anniversary show, the team behind SPATEX – the UK’s only dedicated water leisure exhibition – is determined not to rest on its laurels and is busy laying the groundwork for the 2027 edition.

Taking place once again at the Coventry Building Society Arena and running from Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 February, the 2027 event promises to be every bit as special as this year’s edition which registered a 14% year-on-year increase in visitor attendance.

“There is a real growing demand for water leisure, driven by the desire to stay healthy

and the trend for sustainability, reducing energy costs and high-tech convenience,” said SPATEX Organiser, Michele Bridle. “It is gratifying to report that interest in next year’s show is greater than ever before and we are, once again, looking at an early sell out of stand space.”

Whilst the team is busy getting its ducks in line for the 2027 spectacular, SPATEX 2026’s 41 talks, including the ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) workshops are now available to view on the

SPATEX website and can be found under ‘Workshops & Seminar Recordings’ under the ‘Visit’ dropdown menu. The subject matter is diverse – everything from AI and its expected impact on the water leisure industry; all-important health and safety updates and compliance legislation to the latest ways of fighting Legionnaire’s disease and Cryptosporidium, plus a comprehensive Pool Plant Theatre providing need-to-know knowledge for commercial pool operators.

It’s Time We Read The Small Print Out Loud

Too many hot tub warranties lead with a big headline number and quietly bury the detail that matters most to the buyer. Here, Xavier Labelle from Canadian Spa Company UK, argues the industry would earn more trust by being straight about what warranties actually cover

Acustomer walks into a showroom and is told the hot tub comes with a ‘ten-year warranty’. They relax. It sounds like a decade of peace of mind. What many don’t discover until much later – sometimes not until something actually fails – is that the ten years applies only to the shell structure against water loss and that the parts and labour cover itself – the element that fixes a failed pump or heater – runs for a fraction of that time. The number on the banner and the warranty cover in practice turn out to be two different things.

I don’t think that’s usually dishonesty. Layered warranties are normal and sensible: the acrylic body, the working parts and the electronics genuinely fail in different ways and over different timescales, so it makes sense to cover them differently. The problem isn’t the structure of the cover offered. It’s that, as an industry, we tend to lead with the longest, most flattering layer and leave the customer to find the rest in the small print. In a market where buyers are more informed and more sceptical than ever, that gap is doing us real harm.

THE QUESTIONS HAVE CHANGED

We’ve seen the shift first-hand. Two years ago, buyers walked in asking about price and brand. Now they arrive asking what the warranty actually covers if a pump fails in year three, how long parts and labour really last and whether the cover is conditional on anything. Some turn up with spreadsheets. They’ve read the forums and heard the horror stories and they are no longer reassured by a big number – they want to know what it means.

That shift is good news for anyone prepared to answer plainly and awkward for anyone relying on the headline to do the selling. The brands that do well over the next few years will be the ones that explain their warranty and the cover it offers before they’re asked, not the ones hoping nobody reads to the end.

THE

CLAUSE NOBODY

MENTIONS

There’s a second issue that deserves more daylight: the mandatory annual service. A number of warranties only stay valid if the owner pays for a manufacturer service every single year. Miss one and the cover is void. The service is presented as protecting the customer, but in practice it can be a recurring charge dressed up as a condition of the warranty they have already bought.

An annual service is a good idea – I’d recommend one for the long-term health of any spa. But there’s a difference between recommending good maintenance and making your warranty contingent on the customer handing you money every year. One builds trust; the other quietly erodes it. If cover can be voided by a missed invoice, it was never quite the reassurance the headline implied.

WHAT HONEST WARRANTY COVER LOOKS LIKE

None of this is hard to fix. It just means saying out loud what most warranties only say in the small print. For our part, we’ve tried to keep it simple: two years of parts and labour covering the shell, pump, heater and control system, fitted anywhere in the UK, with no annual service required to keep it active; and,

A warranty and the cover it provides should reassure the customer on the day they buy and still mean what they thought it meant three years later”

separately and as standard, ten years against water loss through the shell. If someone wants longer, they can extend the parts and labour cover and even stack it – but that’s an option they choose, not a clause we spring on them. The full terms are written to be read on our website and the point is simply that they’re meant to be understood, not decoded.

I’m not pretending ours is the only fair approach or that we get everything right. The wider point is that clarity is a choice – and it’s one more of us should be making.

COMPETING ON CLARITY

The wet leisure industry spends a lot of energy competing on specification – jets, insulation, smart controls – and rightly so. But there’s a quieter competition we’ve been slower to embrace: competing on honesty. A warranty and the cover it provides should reassure the customer on the day they buy and still mean what they thought it meant three years later. When it doesn’t, the customer doesn’t just blame one brand; they lose a little faith in all of us.

We have a genuinely good story to tell as an industry. Our products improve people’s health, their homes and their downtime. It would be a shame to undermine that with paperwork a customer needs a magnifying glass to trust. Reading the small print out loud costs nothing – and it might be the most persuasive thing any of us does this year.

The Art of Precision. The Standard

In the world of high-end pool design, a cover should never be an afterthought or a compromise.

It is the definitive finishing touch – a fusion of seamless automation, safety, and architectural integration.

At Ocea UK, we don’t just manufacture covers; we engineer bespoke environments.

The Ocea Signature: British Craftsmanship, Global Standards.

Cotswold-Bespoke Tailoring: Every Ocea system is meticulously cut and tailored within our dedicated facility in the heart of the Cotswolds. By maintaining total creative control on British soil, we ensure a level of artisanal finish that mass-market imports simply cannot replicate.

In-House Stainless Steel Engineering: Our commitment to longevity is forged in our in-house fabrication suite. Using premium-grade stainless steel, our engineers create structural components designed to perform flawlessly for a lifetime, regardless of the project’s complexity.

Unrivaled Responsive Delivery: We respect the rhythm of a luxury build. While the industry accepts months of delay, Ocea’s localized supply chain delivers a bespoke, factory-tested system within a 2–4 week window.

Complexity as Standard: We believe that every vision deserves a solution. Where others see “difficult” projects, we see an opportunity for innovation. Ocea is the only specialist capable of specifying any configuration for any build as a standard offering—ensuring your design intent is never diluted by technical limitations.
