So we’ve finally made it to December and that means our last issue of 2025. Looking back to the start of the last year, I remember there was actually a healthy amount of enthusiasm around and the thought that a new year would bring new opportunities. I’m pleased to say, for a great many at least, the past year didn’t disappoint and seems to have been a big improvement on 2024. As ever, the weather played its part in the fortunes of our industry, and a large part of 2025’s success was due to being blessed with some ideal conditions throughout the spring and summer months. It’s rare to experience a lack of rain in the UK, but it was so noticeably dry in the first half of the year, that even a wetter autumn couldn’t make up for it, a fact that actually started to cause some issues by way of TUB’s being imposed. The reality of the year though was that the almost ideal weather we enjoyed was at least somewhat offset with other challenges. The biggest of which seems to have been the wider economy faltering, combined with less than favourable Government policies leading to lots of uncertainty, meaning both businesses and potential consumers put a lot of decision making on hold. So let’s hope that with the recent budget, along with its implications now fully known, plans are no longer being put off and we enter the new year with both positivity and projects unleashed! Finishing this year on a high, I’m pleased to say congratulations go to three SPATA members who were successful at this year’s EUSA Awards, the ceremony for which was held during the Piscina Barcelona show. You can see exactly who won what towards the back of this issue.
Safety covers are also placed under the spotlight as we take a closer look at a range of options which are marketed on the strength of reducing accidents through denying any direct access to the water within a pool or spa. Moving away from plant rooms and swimming pools, and looking at the more glamorous and definitely warmer end of the product spectrum, in this seasonal issue we highlight some soothing sauna and steam products, heat therapy-based wellness items which are perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation of the mind, body and soul – a perfect solution for these colder winter months. We also take a look at a number of hot tubs that boast HSG282 compliance, making them suitable for use in a variety of commercial and business settings, which includes holiday parks, lodges, cottage rentals and more. As if that wasn’t enough, we have our regular Opinion piece which nicely follows on from last issue’s as Poolview’s Helen Meckiffe looks at the subject of using Automated Monitoring and Drowning Detection technology. There’s also a piece from the STA’s Chris Bateman, who looks at tackling Cryptosporidium and cutting carbon footprints through the use of smarter filtration in commercial environments. Works Progressing On £17m Transformation Of Bromley Leisure Centre Significant progress continues on site at the multi-million pound transformation of Walnuts Leisure Centre in Orpington, including extensive works to the pool hall, window replacements and the completion of works to the roof. The centre is set to reopen in spring 2026 following the major £17m refurbishment, which is being funded and delivered by Bromley Council via Alliance Leisure using the UK Leisure Framework. Councillor Yvonne Bear, Executive Councillor for Renewal, Recreation and Housing, said: “This refreshed centre will be a huge boost to the borough’s leisure offering and will act as a hub for regional sporting activity while creating a welcoming space for families and visitors to enjoy, all while cutting our future maintenance liabilities on behalf of council taxpayers.” Ruth Ripsher, Delivery Manager at Alliance Leisure said: “Having supported Bromley Council throughout this project, it is incredibly exciting to see the work now coming off the ground. These new designs reflect a vision we have been working toward for some time, and as the development partner, we are proud to be turning those plans into a reality that will serve Orpington for generations.” Alongside the new competition-length pool at the Walnuts, reconfigured changing rooms with new showers and lockers will also be delivered, as well as an improved gym and a new exercise studio. Essential repairs and a completely new heating system will
also reduce running costs at the centre and help ensure the smooth running of the site.

IN BRIEF FARNBOROUGH COUNCIL SUBMITS PLANNING APPLICATION A new leisure centre for Hampshire is another step closer, after Rushmoor Borough Council formally submitted a planning application at the end of October outlining its plans to build the new leisure centre and swimming pool in Farnborough town centre. The council plans to build the new leisure centre on the current Queensmead car park and it is set to include a 25-metre swimming pool and learner pool.
PSDS WORKS START AT TIPTON LEISURE CENTRE Alliance Leisure, acting as Sandwell Council’s development partner and Leisure Energy, principal contractor, have begun works at Tipton Leisure Centre in the West Midlands to deliver a Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) project that will lower running costs and carbon emissions. The programme replaces ageing fossil fuel gas boilers with a unique sector leading air source heat pump solution, anchored by Leisure Energy’s Net Zero Pod®, alongside new air handling units and a pool heat exchanger. Once operational, the upgrades are expected to achieve a 100% reduction in annual gas consumption and cut around 200 tonnes of CO2 per year. Backed by £2m of investment, largely from Government funding administered by Salix, the project is scheduled to complete by March 2026, supporting Sandwell Council’s commitment to become carbon neutral by 2030. The Project team, appointed via the UK Leisure Framework (owned by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd), includes Leisure Energy Ltd (principal designer and contractor), Sandwell Leisure Trust (operator), Omega Design Consultants and ORSA Projects Limited.

Major Decarbonisation Work Underway At Loughborough’s ‘Pool Of Dreams’ Loughborough University has launched a major decarbonisation project to transition its worldrenowned swimming pool away from fossil fuels, replacing its gas-fired boiler plant with modern air source heat pumps (ASHPs). The £2.6m initiative is being delivered with support from the government-backed SALIX Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme with the project expected to reduce Loughborough University Scope 1 emissions by around 2.4% (approximately 350 tonnes of CO2 per year). This strategic investment marks a significant step in the University’s commitment to achieving net zero carbon emissions. Alongside decarbonisation, the upgraded system will improve energy efficiency, operational resilience, and enhance the long-term sustainability of the facility. “This transformative decarbonisation project is a major leap toward a more sustainable campus,”
said Elliot Brown, Sustainability Manager at Loughborough University. “As the most gas-intensive building on site, the pool plays a central role in our unique sporting ecosystem, making this transition to low-carbon heating especially impactful. “By switching from gas boilers to air-source heat pumps powered by clean electricity through our net zero for business energy tariff, we are cutting our scope 1 carbon emissions while enhancing energy efficiency and operational resilience. “Once complete, we’ll be tracking performance to make sure the carbon savings are real and longlasting.” The project will also see a number of additional sustainable actions, including: • Replacement of air handling unit (AHU) heating coils • New plate heat exchangers for pool water heating • Installation of thermal stores to meet peak winter heating demands • A comprehensive upgrade to the building’s controls strategy • Additional electrical capacity from the National Grid to support ASHP operation. Loughborough University’s swimming pool has been home to a number of Olympic, Paralympic and world champions over the years, including Adam Peaty, Hannah Moore, Daniel Wiffen, Louise Hansson and Laura Stephens.

IN BRIEF CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON £12M DROITWICH REFURBISHMENT PROJECT Work has officially started this autumn on the £12.7m redevelopment of Droitwich Spa Leisure Centre that Alliance Leisure are delivering for Wychavon District Council. Following the completion of initial enabling works, the main project is now underway. Designed by Watson Batty Architects and implemented by main contractor Speller Metcalfe, the redevelopment promises a major transformation of the much-loved community facility. Amongst many improvements, the upgraded centre will feature a brand-new 8x12m learner pool, housed within a modern extension that will allow a full programme of swimming lessons to run without impacting the main pool’s timetable, helping residents of all ages to develop swimming as a vital life skill.
OPENING DATE CONFIRMED FOR SWINDON’S HISTORIC HEALTH HYDRO Swindon Borough Council and GLL are delighted to announce that the Swindon’s historic Health Hydro facility will reopen on Monday 19 January 2026. The Victorian-era facility has been closed while the first phase of major refurbishment was carried out. The restoration project has delivered a range of improvements, some of which include new changing rooms, enhanced energy efficiency, and new plant areas and equipment to support the building long-term. As is common with projects in Grade II* listed buildings, detailed early investigations highlighted challenges that required careful redesign to protect the Health Hydro’s heritage. Extensive safe removal of asbestos was also completed as part of the work, ensuring the building is ready for future phases of restoration and continued community use.

Much Awaited ‘Woolwich Waves’ To Open On New Year’s Day Woolwich Waves Leisure Centre will open its doors to the public on New Year’s Day in the heart of Woolwich Town Centre. Charitable social enterprise GLL will operate the flagship facility in partnership with Royal Borough of Greenwich – and under its ‘Better’ brand. Featuring three pools, water slides, a toddler splash zone, a health suite with spa, sauna and therapy rooms, plus much more, customers of all ages will be able to make use of the state-of-theart facilities to boost their health and wellbeing. At the official handover ceremony on 2 December, Peter Bundey, GLL Chief Executive,
said: “GLL are delighted to continue our long-standing partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich by operating the new Woolwich Waves. “The new leisure centre is truly state-of-the-art and is already creating significant community interest. This iconic facility is much more than a fitting replacement of the popular Waterfront Leisure Centre; it is a proud civic statement. “As a charitable social enterprise and worker-owned co-op we welcome the chance to also use Woolwich Waves to widen and deepen employment and social opportunity for
local people.” Cllr Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “The start of 2026 will see the moment thousands of residents have been waiting for as they will be able to experience for the first time the leisure centre they helped to name. “It’s not just an exemplar leisure centre any city would be proud to have which is aiming for the highest sustainability measures.” Rooftop solar panels are expected to generate 250,000 kWh per year – providing heat to the building which replaces the much-loved Waterfront Leisure Centre which will now close.
Build On Site Option From Heatstar Helps To Overcome Access Problems During the specification of a new environmental control system, Heatstar leave no stone unturned, ensuring the perfect solution no matter how complex the project. New Leisure Centre Marks Sixth Successful Alliance Leisure Project With Local Council
Plans For New Peterborough Pool Take A Giant Leap Forward Plans for a new leisure centre and swimming pool in Peterborough have taken a giant leap forward following an announcement in November that Government will be contributing £20m. The announcement was made by Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, that a bid for funding towards the much-needed development has been approved from the new £240m Growth Mission Fund to support local economic growth, subject to the approval of a full business case. Council Leader, Councillor Shabina Qayyum, said: “I am so delighted at the news that Government will be putting £20m into a much-needed new leisure centre and swimming pool for Peterborough. “This significant investment means it is full steam ahead with our plans and we will progress at
pace to deliver a new facility as quickly as possible. “A new swimming pool will benefit residents of all ages and generations to come, supporting our younger residents to learn how to swim and will promote health and wellbeing for residents of all ages. At a Cabinet meeting in October, members approved plans for a new eight lane 25 metre swimming pool and fitness centre as their preferred option, subject to funding being secured. It followed a feasibility study into options for a replacement facility and regular meetings between council officers and key stakeholders in the project, including both city MPs, the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA), ARU Peterborough, City of Peterborough Swimming Club, Friends of the Lido and Living Sport.
The new Cath Thom Leisure Centre at Wilson Sports Village has opened to the public, the latest project successfully delivered by Alliance Leisure for Hyndburn Borough Council in Lancashire. Funded by the Council and Sport England, the circa £13m scheme sets a new benchmark for delivering cost-effective, inclusive and sustainable facilities tailored to the needs of the local community. The project faced a setback following the collapse of the original contractor, ISG, which went into administration in September 2024. Works restarted in January 2025 after the appointment of Universal Civils and Build under the UK Leisure Framework, allowing the development to complete in line with the original scope, specification and quality standards. Designed by Pozzoni, the facility is one of the key environmentally responsible buildings in the borough, achieving an impressive

Alex has served as a director of ISPE since October 2022 and this is the highest honour bestowed by the ISPE council, recognising his outstanding service to both the swimming pool industry and the Institute itself. “I am incredibly proud to have been made a fellow of ISPE and for the recognition from my peers in this industry,” commented Alex. “I am looking forward to raising wider awareness of ISPE and of all of the great work it does for professionals in the industry and for young people embarking on their careers in this sector. As many across the UK hot tub industry may be aware, David Hayes of Hydropool Devon, who are BISHTA and BSPF members, suffered a catastrophic injury and sustained a life changing spinal cord injury during a holiday in Ibiza with his wife Elly and their two children earlier this year. Whilst diving in the sea, David broke the C5 vertebrae in his neck, damaging the C4-C6 section of his spinal cord. David has been diagnosed as quadriplegic, meaning he is permanently paralysed from the chest down and has no use of his limbs, although there is hope that intensive rehabilitation and advancements in medical science, will help improve the current situation for the family. David faces 24-hour medical care and rehabilitation for the foreseeable future, and vast adaptations to his home. While Elly is supporting him and their children, she is undergoing radiotherapy treatment herself, and also managing their businesses and the overwhelming volume of administrative tasks that come with these circumstances. Therme Group To Build Asia’s First State-of-the-Art Wellbeing Destination Therme Group recently announced that it will be developing a S$1 billion state-of-the-art wellbeing oasis in Singapore, following the award of the Concept and Price Revenue Tender for a Wellness Attraction at the Marina South Coastal site by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB). This marks Therme Group’s first foray into Singapore, creating Asia’s first large-scale social wellbeing infrastructure project and the Group’s inaugural destination in the region. The winning bid in the tender outlines the development of a sweeping urban oasis on the 4-hectare waterfront site next to Marina Barrage and Gardens by the Bay. It is projected to welcome around 2 million visitors annually when it reaches full operational capacity, with about half being overseas visitors. At the end of October, the global swimming pool and wellness industry gathered in Cologne once again for aquanale. During the four days of the event, trade visitors to the Cologne fairgrounds were given a comprehensive overview of the latest innovations in the fields of swimming pool technology, saunas, pools, spas and water treatment. Around 290 exhibitors from 33 countries presented new products and designs for modern, sustainable and pioneering swimming pool and wellness facilities. Together with the co-located FSB, aquanale attracted around 28,000 trade visitors from over 125 countries. With these results, the trade fair continued the positive trend of previous years and confirmed its position as an internationally important platform for the industry. aquanale 2025 showcased a wide range of products and solutions for private and public swimming pools, wellness facilities and sauna areas across approximately 40,000 square metres of exhibition space. The focus was on energy-efficient water treatment, sustainable pool technologies and high-quality spa and sauna solutions. Trade visitors had the opportunity to experience the latest water-care systems, state-of-the-art pump technologies and premium materials in person. There was particular interest in water and resource conservation, design trends and digital control systems. “At this year’s aquanale, it was clear to see how the international swimming pool and wellness industry is undergoing a realignment towards energy efficiency and digitalisation, while still maintaining a focus on design. Summarising Yet Another Busy Year In this final issue of 2025, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes summarises a number of the achievements across another busy year, plus thanks the various individuals that have contributed to the work of the associations
L
ooking back on this year, we had plenty of sunshine but not enough rain. As a result, even now in winter, some areas of the country still have Temporary Use Bans (TUBs) or, as we commonly know them, hosepipe bans in place. It has been crucial to collaborate with water companies when issues arise, to ensure that proportionate advice is provided in their Drought Management Code of Practice. While it is not perfect, if it is carried out as per their guidance, then it is reasonably proportionate and tries to help businesses in the first stages of the ban. During the year, there have been a number of other key tasks undertaken. Both BISHTA and SPATA’s Technical Committees have been working tirelessly to update their respective Standards with 2026 versions of each, which will be available to help members meet industry expectations. The industry guidance on cold water immersion has been invaluable in providing advice in this emerging area, especially for domestic settings. Working not only with manufacturers and other interested parties in the industry, there has been direct involvement from Coventry University, which has been very gratefully received. Work has recommenced this year on the Domestic Pool Maintenance certificated qualification for pool valeters. This is a collaboration with the ISPE and a pilot course is planned to be available in 2026. Further work has been achieved this year with the STA at their annual conference to promote the development of swim schools.
It is anticipated that there will continue to be close cooperation between the STA and SPATA members to build/refurbish commercial facilities. The bonds with colleagues in Europe (via EUSA) and across the world (via WAPSA) continue to deepen. The 9th WAPSA meeting was held in Barcelona and attendees had the chance to receive the latest market insights. There were also updates from the subgroups on education, environmental initiatives, marketing and association benchmarking. The 2026 British Pool and Hot Tub Awards will announce winners at the Industry Gala Evening during SPATEX on Tuesday 3 February 2026, at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Attendance at the event is open to the whole industry and tickets are available until Friday 9 January (see following page for more details). Congratulations to the following SPATA members who recently won European Pool and Spa Awards in Barcelona at the event, hosted by EUSA; XL Pools won a Bronze Award in the Domestic Spas category, Alukov UK won a Bronze Award in the Domestic Pools with an Enclosure category and Exterior Experience Landscaping (based in Dubai), who received a Gold and a Silver Award in the Swimming Pools Outside Europe category. SPATEX Is Back Soon… And It’s Bigger Than Ever! nd just like that, the 30th anniversary edition of SPATEX is in view. There’s only one event in the UK industry’s calendar that has the capacity and ability to unite all elements of water leisure from all four corners of the globe and that’s SPATEX. 2026 is not just any year, celebrating three decades of being at the top of its game, this is the biggest showcase of water leisure ever staged in the UK. Taking place from Tuesday 3 to Thursday 5 February at the Coventry Building Society Arena, SPATEX is free to attend and open to all. As the UK’s only dedicated water leisure expo, SPATEX has broad appeal, attracting an eclectic, cross section of professions and disciplines, from architects, specifiers, designers, holiday park owners, school bursars to hoteliers, leisure centre managers, town planners, in addition to the show’s core audience – pool and hot tub retailers and builders. Organiser, Michele Bridle, said: “We are pulling out all the stops for this special edition, with new, esteemed speakers giving the best seminar programme in 30 years; a showcase that includes innovations and products never seen before at SPATEX. THE EXHIBITORS The stars of SPATEX are, of course, its 125plus participating companies, representing 13 countries, many of whom are returning exhibitors. Arena 1 features ISPE’s (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) three days of CPD-accredited technical workshops, offering a diverse range of topics − from how to build a one-piece swimming pool; advantages of stainless steel pools; practical AI for the pool industry to the removal of phosphates and chlorine protection in outdoor pools; the benefits of hot and cold water immersion following extensive studies supported by the SPATEX Foundation; and a spotlight on modern pool and backyard lighting. In Arena 2 there’s an equally packed programme. The STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association), will be giving keynote talks on Tuesday morning, followed by a Pool Plant Theatre – a collaboration calling on the specialist knowledge of STA, ISPE, RLSS UK (Royal Life Saving Society UK), IoS (Institute of Swimming) and CBA (Chemical Business Association). Designed for leisure centre managers, it covers topics such as the latest thinking on pool operator training and water testing. There will also be further sessions on Wednesday morning. On Thursday, PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) will have its traditional morning slot.
EXPERTISE IS JUST A TAP AWAY! 2026 sees the introduction of an exciting new initiative called The Industry Hub in which major industry associations will be conveniently grouped on one stand (adjacent to seminar Arena 2) − PWTAG, STA, RLSS UK, IoS and the BSPF’s (British Swimming Pool Federation) SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association). In addition, the LCA (Legionella Control
Association) and WMSoc (Water Management Society) will also be out in force, with speakers from LCA giving keynote talks in the seminar Arena 1.

s the industry moves into 2026, pool operators face two challenges that continue to define commercial aquatic facilities: protecting bathers from Cryptosporidium and reducing the environmental footprint of day-to-day operations. Both issues were at the centre of technical debate throughout 2025 and they will remain prominent as we enter a new year shaped by rising energy costs, tighter sustainability expectations and increased scrutiny around water quality management. Against this backdrop, filtration efficiency is once again under review. For many operators, the question is no longer whether to modernise, but how to adopt systems that provide measurable improvements in safety, performance and sustainability. This focus was reflected at the recent STA Conference in October, where industry expert Jimmy Lamb presented a seminar on ‘How to Help Prevent Crypto and Reduce Your Carbon Footprint’. Lamb, UK and Ireland Sales Manager for Dryden Aqua and former ISPE President, helps operators understand technologies such as AFM® and integrated filtration approaches that support more efficient, sustainable pool operation. His message is clear: filtration is a primary barrier against contamination and a key factor in environmental performance.
THE CRYPTO CHALLENGE FOR 2026 Cryptosporidium remains one of the most significant risks in public pools. The parasite’s oocysts are highly chlorine resistant, very small and able to survive for long periods. Outbreaks can lead to illness, facility closures and substantial remediation costs. While disinfection continues to play an essential role, as discussed in the last issue, inadequate filtration increases the likelihood of oocysts remaining suspended in the water. The industry consensus is that crypto defence must be based on improved physical removal, not simply increased chlorine dosing. Lamb’s session highlighted that traditional sand filtration often fails to deliver the finegrade performance needed. Issues such as channelling, biofouling and uneven filter beds restrict its ability to capture very small particles consistently.

THE ROLE OF TRAINING IN SUSTAINING THIS PROGRESS
growing adoption as a more robust alternative to sand. Made from recycled glass and activated through a catalytic process, AFM® has a self-sterilising surface that prevents biofilm formation, a major contributor to reduced filtration performance. Without biofilm, filters operate more predictably and can achieve finer filtration. AFM® systems can typically capture particles down to around 1 micron in size when configured correctly, improving the removal of contaminants, including crypto oocysts. Improved particle capture also reduces the pressure on disinfection. Many sites report lower chlorine demand, reduced combined chlorine levels and clearer water, resulting in a safer and more comfortable environment for bathers.
A MORE INTEGRATED APPROACH TO FILTRATION Dryden Aqua’s DAISY® approach (Dryden Aqua Integrated System) combines AFM®, coagulation, flocculation and effective hydraulic design to support finer, more consistent filtration. By limiting the amount of material that dissolves into the water, it increases the chance that contaminants are removed mechanically rather than chemically. According to research, they are one of the most requested items from customers researching UK holidays online. Research also suggests that with the introduction of a hot tub, impressive premiums can be added to the overall price of a holiday and occupancy rates greatly improve too. So with statistics like these, it is no surprise that hot tubs have performed so well in the sector. A number of considerations have to be taken into account when it comes to maintaining models in these settings though. Their operation should be in accordance with the latest Health & Safety Guidance – HSG282: The control of legionella and other infectious agents in spa-pool systems – something which the hot tubs showcased within this feature all meet. Operating methods, costs and durability also have to be considered too but thankfully, manufacturers have been quick to acknowledge the sector’s needs and produce a number of models plus develop technologies specifically for it. Hot tubs aside, over recent times, the availability of these products has become much more widespread. oth physical and mental wellbeing is needed for the complete wellness experience, so it’s important to ensure that each side is provided for. Thankfully, there are various products that offer this in an all-embracing package, and a number of them do so through the use of heat therapy. Putting hot tubs to one side, these warming solutions include saunas, steam options and a number of other temperaturebased solutions that can be located both indoors and increasingly outdoors too. Despite the increased interest in cold therapy solutions, warm options of both a traditional and electric nature, are still the preferred choices for many and it’s no surprise why. As the warmth permeates down to the body core to relax and soothe tired muscles and joints, the mind is free to wander and unwind – an experience that is the complete opposite to one provided by cold therapy products! LUTZ JESCO’S MEMDOS SMART RANGE OFFERS ACCURACY AND CONVENIENCE Solenoid dosing pumps have been the mainstay for chemical dosing applications within swimming pool water treatment over the last several decades from dosing of sodium hypochlorite or calcium hypochlorite for disinfection and hydrochloric acid for pH correction. Initially dosing pumps employed stroke length adjustment to alter output by reducing the volumetric stroke per pulse and then manual speed in addition to regulate the
stroke frequency, i.e. number of strokes per minute. In the last two decades, dosing pumps have seen tremendous developments that include digital displays highlighting flow rate in l/h or ml/h making them easier to use within all chemical metering applications and to automatic degassing heads or valves for sodium hypochlorite. Traditionally, operators concentrate on monitoring and manually testing their free chlorine and pH levels. However, engaging with other areas of water quality could have a positive impact on energy and water savings. Take Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) as an example. With a CENTURIO POOL owners can have a conductivity probe so that TDS can be continually monitored and displayed alongside free chlorine and pH. he European Pool and Spa Awards, organised annually by the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA), honour the most exceptional pools, spas and hot tubs within the Wet Leisure Industry. Each year, winners from across Europe compete for top recognition in this prestigious event. Following the 2025 awards’ ceremony, Europe’s most stunning swimming pool, spa, wellness and hot tub builds and installations have been revealed. This year marked the 13th edition of the prestigious awards, which culminated in an exciting ceremony on Wednesday 19 November 2025, at Piscina Barcelona, Spain – a fitting stage for Europe’s finest to shine. SPATA are delighted to announce that this year, three member companies stormed to victory, winning the following EUSA awards with trophies: • XL Pools, based in Kent, won a Bronze Award in the Domestic Spas category. • Alukov UK, based in Surrey, won a Bronze Award in the
Domestic Pools with an Enclosure category. • Exterior Experience Landscaping, based in Dubai, was awarded a Gold and a Silver Award in the Swimming Pools Outside Europe category. In the 2025 competition, dozens of pools, spas, wellness pools and hot tubs from Austria, Belgium, Germany, Greece, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, and the UK participated. With innovations leading to improved durability and performance, plus often, a welcomed reduction in water use, filters are one of the first places to start looking at when it comes to combining cost savings with the effective management of water. W
hen it comes to the filtration of the water circulating in UK pools and spas, there really is a wide range of options available for an equally wide set of operating environments found right across the nation. Often regarded as somewhat basic or low tech in their operation and function and pretty much guaranteed to be found tucked away behind the scenes, products within the filtration sector have benefitted from a number of innovations over the years which have improved the solutions on offer for what is without doubt, a critical part of any wet leisure set up. As a result of the advances made, some products have become more user-friendly, others more flexible or durable and some are helping to reduce the amount of water that is used – an increasingly important and often overlooked feature. All of these help to lower operating costs, so naturally, the developments are welcomed by both the trade and even more so by the owners and operators of pools and spas across the UK that come into contact with them. With numerous established options combined with an ever-widening range of emerging technologies and products, it can often be hard to keep track of what’s on offer. So putting media options aside, here, we highlight just some of the current crop of filtration options that are for a variety of installations, both big and small.

In recent decades, Waterco Micron commercial media filters have become a go-to for filtration system designers worldwide. From swimming pools to desalination plants, from fish farms to sewage treatment – the combination of high quality and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques, highly cost-effective lifetime servicing costs, minimal downtime and continued investment in research and development has earned Waterco their well-deserved place at the top of the list of many a consultant’s equipment specification list. Waterco offer Micron filters in a range of maximum operating pressure ratings: 2.5 bar; 4 bar; 6 bar; and 8 bar models have been available for some time, but the
range has more recently been extended to 10 bar, opening up a whole new range of opportunities within more specialist water treatment applications. Swimming pool filtration systems typically operate at the lower end of this scale, with 2.5 bar being more than the adequate maximum for most. Waterco has observed a shift in the design requirements of consultants operating at the premium end of the market. A filter should of course be able to withstand being over-pressurised for a short period. However, rarely taken into account is the detrimental effect this can have on a freshly manufactured GRP filter. Fibreglass resins can take many weeks (dependent on atmospheric conditions) to harden to their maximum strength and to stress the filter shells so soon after manufacture can cause micro-fissures to fracture the shell almost imperceptibly and could ultimately shorten the service life of the filter. As a result of this shift in the industry, Waterco decided to lead the way by offering all Micron SMDD (lateral underdrains), SPDD (nozzle plate underdrains) and MD (horizontal) filters in 4 bar as standard. From Tragedy To Technology – Smarter Systems Are Changing The Landscape Of Pool Safety In a follow up to last issue, here, Helen Meckiffe, Business Manager at Poolview adds her thoughts on the subject of using Automated Monitoring and Drowning Detection technology in supervised swimming pool environments
F
or as long as humans have enjoyed the water, we’ve struggled with one unrelenting reality: drowning is silent, fast, and often tragically invisible. But thanks to decades of research, innovation and collective effort, we’re finally beginning to shift that narrative, and automated monitoring and detection technology is playing a powerful role in that evolution.
integration, systems that learn, adapt and interface seamlessly with staffing patterns, pool designs and emergency protocols. That means faster, more informed responses. Better incident reporting and transparency: Technology gives us data. And data, when used well, helps facilities understand trends, staffing efficiency and near-miss prevention. Expect future systems to link with reporting platforms to build richer insights, turning anecdotal lessons into structured action.
THE GLOBAL PICTURE Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 300,000 people die from drowning every year globally. Children aged 14 are particularly vulnerable, and swimming pools, while recreational centres of joy, can also pose hidden threats. What’s most alarming is that drowning rarely looks like the movies. Victims often slip below the surface without a splash or cry for help, and lifeguards may have just 20 seconds to detect and respond. That window is short. Fatally short.
THE UK CONTEXT Here in the UK, the statistics echo the concern. National Water Safety Forum figures show that around 200 accidental drowning deaths occur annually in the UK. While open water is a major contributor, supervised swimming pools still present risks – particularly during busy periods, staffing transitions, or when visibility is compromised. These facts pushed Poolview and others in our sector to ask: how can we strengthen supervision and speed up response times?
