Twelve months on from last year’s August issue and again I’m reporting another scorcher of a season for the industry. Some would say we couldn’t have asked for better weather, but to be honest, as with last year, it does start to beg the question ‘Is there such a thing as too much of a good summer?’ and I think given the year we’ve had, the answer might start to be yes. And that sounds a little crazy, but certainly too much when it comes to a lack of rain, TUBs being put in place and looking around at the brown tinderbox conditions found across most of the country. Of course, let’s not forget that there was plenty of rain around at the start of the year, so some of this is clearly an issue of resource management that needs addressing sooner rather than later. For those lucky enough to own a wet leisure product during any or all of this year’s heatwaves or for those who operate them through a busy summer, the weather has ensured more use of pools, spas and more, over recent months. So quite rightly, water-based hygiene has very much been at the forefront of people’s minds. Somewhat handily, inside, we take a look at some of the current clever solutions that are keeping the water clean whilst minimising or eliminating the use of chlorine. In addition to this, we also take our annual look at just some of the laboursaving products that are making the job of testing water in pools and spas a more simple, quick and accurate task. Still on the subject of water and its composition,

we have an interesting piece on TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) from Australia-based independent pool and water treatment researcher David Watson, plus we’ve a piece from STA Pool Plant Tutor Chris Bateman on the subject of biofilms which are a hidden water treatment challenge. Dehumidification also features strongly in this issue as we take a closer look at some of the environmental solutions that are able blow a blast of fresh air into indoor pool and spa environments. The appeal of stainless steel is also focused on again as we look at swimming pools, spas and a number of accessories that are utilising the benefits of a timeless and elegant material that offers flexibility in its use along with long term durability. Talking of flexibility, moving floors also makes a return this issue too. Whilst clearly a considerable investment, these cleverly engineered products offer some fantastic benefits, particularly when it comes to freeing up space for alternative uses in a wide range of settings. Swim spas are also covered as we take a look at a handful of models that are currently available for both families and more serious swimmers. If that wasn’t enough, we also have a piece highlighting some research on humidity and how it is as crucial as heat for sauna health benefits. As ever, there’s also useful information from the BSPF, SPATA and BISHTA along with all the British entries shortlisted for the 2026 European Pool & Spa Awards hosted by EUSA. The winners will be announced later this year at the biennial Piscine Global exhibition in Lyon, France. Finally, we’ve got our round up of all the latest industry, product, people and eco news from both here in the UK and from further afield. The Landmark London Unveils New £4m Spa The Landmark London, a luxury hotel situated in Marylebone, has unveiled its newly renovated spa following a £4m investment. The 710m2 spa is a contemporary standalone wellness destination available for use by both the hotel’s residents and day-spa guests. The spa has been reimagined by awardwinning architecture studio Alex Kravetz Design, with spa consultant Paula Perkins overseeing the project since its inception. The interiors combine natural stone and marble with organic tones and gentle, ambient lighting to create a calm and contemporary feel. The refurbishment features a comprehensive thermal suite designed and installed by pool and spa specialists Barr + Wray. Facilities include a 34°C vitality pool with swan-neck hydrotherapy jets, an aromatherapy steam room, Finnish sauna, ice fountain, bucket shower, multi-sensory experience showers and heated marble loungers supplied by Fabio Alemanno. Five new treatment rooms have been created (four individual and one double), alongside a new relaxation area and retail

lounge. The shared treatment space will accommodate experiences for couples, as well as treatments designed for parents and children – a first for the venue. New spa-day experiences include a Thermal Journey, a

Signature Spa and a Tea Ritual. The development at The Landmark London is intended to establish the spa as a destination in its own right, combining refined design with performance-led treatments and a broader approach to both the physical and emotional wellbeing of its guests.

Contracts Signed As Basingstoke Moves Closer To New Landmark Leisure Destination

Basingstoke is a major step closer to delivering the biggest investment in leisure and wellbeing the borough has seen for decades, after contracts were signed to build and operate a flagship new water and leisure destination. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council and Places Leisure have now exchanged contracts, unlocking the next phase in delivering a landmark facility that will not only replace the Aquadrome but help transform the Leisure Park into an even stronger destination for residents and visitors. Places Leisure will begin finalising the detailed design of the new energy-efficient complex, shaped by extensive public feedback, ahead of submitting a planning application this autumn. Subject to planning

permission, the new complex will be built in a new location on the leisure park, enabling the existing Aquadrome to remain open until the new facility is complete. On the wet leisure side, plans include a 25-metre, eight-lane competition pool, 20-metre four-lane teaching pool, plus exciting leisure waters with flumes, with additional facilities also being explored. Cabinet Member for Major Projects and

Business Engagement Cllr Onnalee Cubitt said: “This is one of the most exciting milestones our borough has reached in many years. Today isn’t simply about signing a contract. It marks the beginning of a new era for leisure, health and wellbeing in Basingstoke and it will redefine leisure in North Hampshire. “We’re creating far more than a replacement swimming pool. We’re investing in a vibrant destination that will inspire people of all ages to be more active, healthier and happier. IN BRIEF AMBITIOUS PLANS SUBMITTED FOR PETERBOROUGH FACILITY A planning application for a new leisure centre in Peterborough which will feature an eight-lane, 25 metre indoor swimming pool plus 20 metre activity pool with a moveable floor have been formally submitted to city council planners. The move follows the decommissioning of the city’s Regional Pool and Fitness Centre in March 2024 due to several structural and repair issues which meant the centre had reached the end of its natural life. Shortly after the closure, Alliance Leisure Services were appointed to undertake feasibility work for a replacement pool and fitness centre. In November, Government announced that it will provide £20m from its Growth Mission Fund towards the new facility, subject to approval of a full business case, with Peterborough City Council funding the remainder of the project, expected to be around £21m.

TRANSFORMED WALNUTS LEISURE CENTRE REOPENS The transformed Walnuts Leisure Centre in Orpington, London Borough of Bromley, officially opened at the start of July. The Centre’s future has been secured thanks to a £17m investment by Bromley Council. Operator Alliance Leisure delivered the works for Bromley Council through the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, with Etec Contract Services acting as main contractor alongside GT3 Architects, Myrtha Pools and Varsity Consulting Project Management and Quality Surveying. New wet leisure provisions at the centre include a new competition-length swimming pool and training pool, a children’s splash wall for more family fun plus a new sauna and steam room for relaxing post-workout.

Community-Funded Refurbishment Secures Future Of SpArC Swimming Pool A swimming pool built through public subscription more than 50 years ago has reopened following a major refurbishment programme made possible by a huge community fundraising effort and Council investment. Appointed by Shropshire Council, Alliance Leisure has delivered the £1.15m refurbishment of the swimming pool and pool hall at Bishops Castle Leisure and Arts Centre, better known as Sports and Arts in the Community (SpArC), a vital community facility serving rural communities across southwest Shropshire since 1974. Owned by the Council and operated by the Shropshire Community Leisure Trust, SpArC shares its site with Bishop’s Castle Community College. At the heart of the centre is a 20 metre, four-lane swimming pool that is used by six local primary schools and the wider community. The project addressed a number of critical issues affecting the pool’s viability. The existing pool tank required continual repairs has now been reprofiled and relined with a durable waterproof finish. The ageing filtration system had also reached the end of its operational life and has been replaced with new plant equipment, buried pipework, skimmers, sumps and water inlets. Easy-access steps with handrails and guardrails to

replace the traditional ladder steps which presented challenges for older users and people with disabilities were also fitted along with the renewal of key pool fixtures and fittings. Structural bases have also been installed to support a future pool cover system. As with many rural projects, one of the key challenges was securing suitably experienced contractors. By procuring through the UK Leisure Framework, the project team was able to appoint design and construction specialists with experience in delivering complex leisure projects. Led by Alliance Leisure, the project team included Universal Group as principal contractor, Bellrock providing facilities management expertise, and Greenwood Projects delivering project management services.

AstralPool UK And Certikin To Unite As Fluidra UK From January 2027

AstralPool UK and Certikin have announced that they will merge on 1 January 2027 to form Fluidra UK, a move that will bring together two of the UK swimming pool sector’s most established and respected businesses under one unified organisation. The merger will enable customers to access the combined strengths of both businesses through a single organisation, while continuing to benefit from the trusted products, technical expertise and customer service associated with the AstralPool and Certikin brands. Under the new structure, customers will benefit from a streamlined approach to account management, including a single account, invoice and statement. They will also have access to the combined AstralPool and Certikin product portfolios through a unified ordering process,

whether online, by email or by telephone. Customers will also be able to receive everything through a single, coordinated delivery. Importantly, the merger will retain the strength and heritage of both brands. Customers will continue to receive separate AstralPool and Certikin price lists and will continue to have access to the existing technical support teams for all products across both portfolios. The announcement follows a period of integration between the two businesses, during which key functions including Operations, Distribution and Logistics have already been combined. The formation of Fluidra UK represents the next phase of that process and is intended to deliver greater efficiency, responsiveness and value for customers across the swimming pool industry. Neil Stephenson, Managing Director, said: “The formation of Fluidra UK marks an exciting milestone for both AstralPool UK and Certikin. By bringing our organisations together, we are creating a simpler, more efficient experience for customers while preserving the expertise, service and trusted brands that have helped build our reputation in the industry. IN BRIEF GLL SECURES CONTRACTS TO OPERATE TWO HISTORIC SITES Charitable social enterprise and leisure operator GLL has been appointed to manage two historic leisure facilities – Wycombe Rye Lido in Buckinghamshire and Newcastle City Baths – with operations transferred to the organisation on 1 July 2026. The appointments follow the administration of previous operator Fusion Lifestyle earlier this year, with GLL taking responsibility for the continued operation of both centres under its Better brand. Existing members will transfer to Better memberships, providing access to the Better app and ‘Live Better’ a digital health and wellbeing platform, plus they will also gain access to GLL’s wider network of leisure facilities across the UK. During the transition period activities at both facilities will remain unchanged. However, it is anticipated that enhanced programming and extended opening hours will be introduced over the coming months.

SWIM SCHOOL OPENS £1M PURPOSE-BUILT POOL Independent swim school Swimwell recently opened a £1m, purpose-built swimming pool in Stafford. The facility at Kingsmead Retail Park marks a major milestone for the swim school, which has been helping children develop confidence and essential water safety skills for more than a decade. The new 20m x 8m pool will enable Swimwell to expand its provision significantly, increasing capacity from around 600 swimmers to approximately 2,000. Olympic Gold Medallist James Guy and the Mayor of Stafford officially cut the ribbon at the facility’s Open Day in July, which marked the start of a new chapter for the business and its proud Founder and Director, Julie Hand.

Bucksburn Swimming Pool Reopens Following Major Refurbishment Morrison Construction has celebrated the successful reopening of Bucksburn Swimming Pool following the completion of a £2.5m refurbishment delivered on behalf of Aberdeen City Council. The popular community facility officially reopened on 29 June, with Olympic swimmer Hannah Miley joining local residents, schools, community groups and representatives from Aberdeen City Council and Sport Aberdeen to celebrate the transformation of the pool into a modern, more accessible and energyefficient facility. The refurbishment included extensive internal upgrades, a new roof, a new air handling unit

enclosure and improvements to the building’s mechanical and electrical systems, extending the life of the facility while enhancing sustainability. Nairn-based pool and spa company Aqua Leisure Ltd were heavily involved in the project with their expertise being utilised for the refurbishment of the existing steel filters, mechanical filtration improvements, new chemical and electrical control systems, UV disinfection, PAC flocculant dosing enhancements, CO2 pH correction plant installation, and a new pool cover and cover system (with thanks also going to GRC Filtration Services and Forge Leisure Ltd for their excellent support and teamwork throughout). Alongside the refurbishment, the project team was committed to creating a lasting legacy through education, volunteering, environmental initiatives and charitable support. Pupils from Brimmond Primary School created artwork inspired by Our Environment, now displayed as a feature mural in the swimming pool foyer, while students from Bucksburn Academy produced artwork celebrating Aberdeen’s landscapes, architecture and sporting heritage.

Rebecca Cox Appointed Interim Chief Executive Of Swim England Swim England has announced the appointment of Rebecca Cox as Interim Chief Executive, following an internal recruitment process. Rebecca, currently Business Engagement Director at Swim England and Managing Director of the Institute of Swimming, brings significant experience and expertise to the role having spent almost 15 years working across the Swim England family. Her deep understanding of the organisation, its members and the wider aquatics community has been particularly valuable over recent months while serving as Acting Chief Executive. Through this period, she has provided strong leadership and continuity, working closely with colleagues, volunteers and stakeholders across aquatics to maintain momentum behind the delivery of Swim England’s strategic priorities and transformation programme. Swim England Chair Richard Hookway said: “I am delighted that Rebecca has accepted the role of Interim Chief Executive. “She has done an outstanding job leading the organisation as Acting Chief Executive and has demonstrated the leadership, commitment and strategic focus needed to continue driving Swim England forward.” Speaking about her appointment, Rebecca Cox said: “I am proud to be taking on the role of Interim Chief Executive at such an important time for Swim England. “The last few months have reinforced my belief in the strength and passion of our people and the wider aquatics community. “Our ambitions remain high and our commitment to delivering our One Swim England strategy and transformation programme is unwavering. Serco Leisure Announce Steve Nelson As New Managing Director At the start of July, Serco Leisure were delighted to announce the appointment of Steve Nelson as the leisure operator’s new Managing Director. Previous Managing Director, Simon Lane left the business on the same date to take up the position of Chief Executive Officer with award-winning UK holiday park operator, Verdant Leisure. Simon undoubtedly had a major impact on Serco Leisure over the past five years and leaves the business during a period of sustained growth. Serco Leisure currently are responsible for approximately 60 centres around the UK which are managed via partnerships with local authorities and community leisure trusts. Over 30 centres include public swimming pools, lidos or aquatic complexes.

Speaking about his appointment, Steve said: “Having spent 18 years with the business, progressing from site management through a range of leadership roles, it is a privilege to lead an organisation that I know so well and care deeply about. I believe that my appointment also reflects our commitment to developing and supporting internal talent, creating opportunities for our people to grow, thrive and reach their full potential within Serco. “Serco Leisure has achieved significant success in recent years and I look forward to building on that momentum. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Simon Lane for the support and vision he has given me personally but also the wider leisure business over the past five years.”

New Entry Level Qualification To Be Added For The Industry Following extensive work from ISPE and SPATA representatives, there is to be a new ‘Introduction to Domestic Pool Maintenance’ course launched to upskill workers coming into the industry. The course focuses on valeting and other basic routine maintenance tasks to ensure that knowledge can be passed on to new people in the industry. The course materials are being revised based on the pilot feedback. Initially, the course will focus on

Research Suggests Regular Hot Tub Use May Support Memory And Reasoning In Healthy Older Adults

Emerging research from the University of Portsmouth has identified potential cognitive benefits associated with regular hot tub use among healthy older adults. A study, which was supported by BISHTA and partially funded by the SPATEX Foundation, conducted by researchers at the University’s Centre for Integrated Health and Wellbeing, found that regular hot tub sessions may have a positive impact on memory and reasoning performance, adding to growing interest in the role of heat-based wellness activities in supporting healthy ageing. The research focused on healthy older adults who had not been diagnosed with major clinical conditions such as diabetes or heart disease. Italian Tiles At Heart Of Iconic French Pool Renovation

The award-winning renovation of the Aldebert Bellier Tournesol swimming pool in Taverny, France by Studio Arcos B - Étienne Chauvelier, was inspired by the historic Tournesol prefabricated collective swimming pool designed by the architect Bernard Schoeller, a style which was widespread throughout France at the end of the 1960s thanks to General De Gaulle’s ‘1000 Piscines’ plan. The work aimed to preserve this symbolism, embrace its heritage and project it into the present, with the new structure remaining faithful to the original spirit of the construction. Sustainable, energy-efficient solutions and systems have been adopted, to ensure durability and smooth running. These include external insulation, a highperformance roof, controlled, comfortable acoustics and natural ventilation. Inside the building, the visitor is gradually accompanied on a journey that explores the structure. The large, circular volume is a smooth blend of

tradition and modernity. Under the instantly recognisable dome is the water centre, with a large Olympic swimming pool, a multi-purpose pool and a recreational pool for children. Fluidra Accelerates Growth Through Strategic Acquisitions Following the publication of a report which highlighted strong first half of 2026 results for Fluidra, the global pool and wellness company is continuing to sharpen its focus on commercial excellence initiatives that bring it closer to its customers and unlocking its market potential, including further developing its pricing framework and strengthening its go-to-market capabilities. Supporting its growth agenda, at the end of July, the company signed an agreement to acquire Hydrapro, a French manufacturer specialising in pool and spa chemical watertreatment products for the professional

The transaction strengthens Fluidra’s position in France, one of its strategic markets and represents an important step in expanding its presence in water treatment, the largest category in the French pool market with a residential installed base of almost two million pools. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and it is expected to complete early 2027.

Fluidra also expects to complete the acquisition of Riaan Pool Group during the third quarter of 2026. With annual sales of approximately €10m, Riaan Pool Group will further expand the company’s presence in South Africa. Aiper, the robotic pool cleaner company in which Fluidra recently acquired a 27% stake, continued to perform in line with expectations, delivering year-on-year sales growth of 21% during the first half and confirming the potential of this growth platform in this attractive segment.

Key Personnel Updates, Awards, TUBs And More! Here, BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes provides an update on changes to some key personnel, talks entries for awards for both here in the UK and in Europe, plus puts the spotlight on a number of other industry initiatives and factors that are relevant to the wet leisure sector

fter interviewing a very impressive shortlist in Andover, the BSPF has appointed Teresa Beazley to become its new full-time Managing Director. Teresa starts in September and the handover period is currently being arranged. Having been part of a four-person interview panel with Dorian Davies (BSPF President), Dyfed Thompson-Smith (BSPF Immediate Past President) and Kay Coombs (Peas in a Pod Consulting), I can confirm that Teresa will bring a wealth of experience to the role, where she has most recently been the Commercial & Training Manager for The Lighting Industry Association. There will be more about Teresa in the next edition of SPN. Still on the subject of personnel, SPATA is beginning to manage the changeover between Peter Lang and Alan Jackson in the role of Technical Advisor. Alan will continue to be supported by Ian Betts, Howard Gosling and other members of the Technical Committee. It has been fantastic to benefit from Peter’s knowledge and his way of working with people. There is more on the handover between Peter and Alan on page 29. Both BISHTA and SPATA have new versions of their respective Standards live online for members to follow. The changes were implemented on 1 June 2026. Members can request a paper copy if they do not wish to rely solely on an online version. A reminder that the plan is to have a June 2027 version of the standards, with the green and purple amendments being changed to black or red font, where applicable.

Moving on to awards, entries are now being accepted online from SPATA and BISHTA members for the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards. The deadline for submitting entries is Friday 23 October 2026. Visit the SPATA/ BISHTA websites (Trade Pages) to enter and view the 2027 categories. Also, congratulations to all the UK shortlisted entries for this year’s European Pool & Spa Awards. Further details on the entrants and details of the awards event in Lyon can be found on the following pages. Prior to both of those taking place, the annual British Pool and Hot Tub Conference is being held on Thursday 22 October 2026. It is open to SPATA and BISHTA members, and updates on the venue, programme and speakers will be provided in the weekly members e-newsletters. With the great recent weather comes the thorny issue of water shortages, due to the lack of infrastructure investment over the last 25 years. Whether water companies are solely responsible or whether there is a role for government is a debate for another day, but what is clear is that hosepipe bans, more formally Temporary Use Bans (TUBs), will again be a feature in some parts of the UK. Members have access to relevant factsheets on the subject, as the initial ban affects consumers and is not intended to restrict businesses carrying out service and maintenance contracts and refurbishment work. New builds are usually exempt for the first fill of water. Where water companies try to restrict businesses in the first instance, it is important to signpost them to their own

The SPATA Technical Committee In this latest issue, we highlight the change of Technical Advisors and take a closer look at SPATA’s Technical Committee – which supports Standards, offers expertise and ensures industry best practice

he SPATA Technical Committee plays a key role within the Association, providing expert knowledge and guidance that helps ensure SPATA membership remains synonymous with professionalism, quality and technical excellence across the swimming pool, spa and wellness industry. Meeting regularly online, the Technical Committee brings together experienced industry professionals who volunteer their time and expertise to support both the Association and its members. Their collective knowledge helps address emerging industry challenges, inform technical policy and provide practical guidance on all aspects of pool and spa design, construction, operation, maintenance and safety. A core responsibility of the Committee is the ongoing review and development of the SPATA Standards, supplements and member factsheets. The latest edition of the SPATA Standards was published in June this year, ensuring members have access to up-to-date guidance that reflects current best practice, legislative changes, technological developments and evolving industry requirements. These resources are invaluable in helping members deliver safe, compliant and high-quality projects, while demonstrating their commitment to recognised industry standards. Members also benefit from access to a wealth of technical support and advice through a number of Technical Advisors and Technical Committee representatives. Queries frequently relate to compliance with SPATA Standards and other specialist technical matters. Together, they provide a trusted source of practical guidance, while SPATA actively encourages knowledge sharing among members, helping to connect individuals with specialist expertise and supporting collaboration across the industry.

THE END OF AN ERA For more than a quarter of a century, SPATA has benefited from the expertise, dedication and leadership of Peter Lang as Technical Advisor. As Peter prepares to hand over the role to newly appointed Technical Advisor, Alan Jackson, this change provides an opportunity to reflect on SPATA’s technical achievements to date and to look ahead.

Looking back on his time with the Association, Peter said: “For more than 26 years, I have had the privilege of working with SPATA and contributing to a wide range of initiatives that have helped shape and strengthen the Association. One of my earliest priorities was leading the complete rewrite of the SPATA Standards and helping to re-establish the inspection programme, with an ambitious target of conducting 50 inspections in the first year. “Alongside my work with SPATA, I helped form what would eventually become the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA). I was honoured to serve as Chair of EUSA’s Technical Committee, helping to ensure that the UK industry had a strong voice in the development of European standards. EUSA’s recognition by CEN and its liaison role with CEN TC 402 were significant milestones, and I was deeply honoured to receive an EUSA Award for my contribution to this organisation. “The role has taken me across the UK and around the world, representing SPATA. However, what I have valued most throughout my career is the people. Our industry is filled with knowledgeable, passionate and generous individuals who are always willing to share their expertise and support one another. “Today, SPATA benefits from a highly committed and knowledgeable Technical Committee, whose members continue to develop and maintain the Standards, Supplements, Factsheets and guidance materials that support the membership. Looking back, the past 26 years have been rewarding, challenging and enjoyable in equal measure, and I feel extremely fortunate to have played a small part in the industry’s development!”

contractors and private resorts. “My work has focused on pool safety, water treatment, filtration systems, chemical dosing and plant room operations, always with an emphasis on practical solutions that can be applied effectively in real-world environments. Over the years, I’ve been involved in projects ranging from hydrotherapy pools and interactive water features to large leisure developments, supporting clients through design, construction, compliance and long-term operational management. “A particular passion of mine is developing people. afe swimming pools depend on far more than balanced water chemistry. While correct disinfectant levels, balanced pH, effective filtration and routine testing remain fundamental to pool operation, advances in science and technology continue to shape the way we manage water quality. One area receiving increasing attention is biofilms, which cannot always be detected or addressed through traditional water testing alone. Biofilms exist naturally in almost every water system. While well understood in sectors such as healthcare and drinking water, their significance within swimming pool circulation systems has often been underestimated. As operators strive for higher standards of water quality, greater operational efficiency and reduced chemical consumption, recognising and managing biofilms is becoming an increasingly important part of effective pool plant management.

LOOKING BEYOND THE SAMPLE One of the greatest misconceptions is that clear water and compliant microbiological test results automatically indicate a clean circulation system. Routine water testing provides a snapshot of the water itself, but not of what may be happening on the internal surfaces of pipework, balance tanks, filters and other hidden areas where biofilms can establish themselves. A biofilm is a structured community of microorganisms that attach to a surface and produce a protective matrix around themselves. Once established, this slimy layer provides an ideal environment for bacteria to survive, multiply and protect themselves from disinfectants. Rather than existing freely within the water, microorganisms become embedded within this protective structure, making them significantly more difficult to remove using conventional chlorination alone.

WHY BIOFILMS MATTER From an operational perspective, biofilms provide a reservoir for microorganisms, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Legionella, while continually releasing contamination back into the circulating water. This increases chemical demand, reduces plant efficiency and can contribute to unnecessary operating costs. Biofilms also accelerate fouling within filters, pipework and associated equipment, affecting performance and increasing maintenance requirements.

hen it comes to locating a domestic swimming pool, even a fairly modest installation can take up a lot of space, space that will often be at a premium, especially in urban locations. Whether it’s through the use of salt chlorinators, UV, Ozone or other systems, when it comes to the treatment of swimming pool and spa water, there’s now a number of tried and tested non-chemical based, low and no chlorine solutions on offer. With options often providing a gentler wet leisure environment for owners and users, it’s easy to see why they are increasingly popular. This issue, we take a closer look at what’s available this year By Jon Wadeson

ollowing decades of feedback from pool and spa users, owners and operators spanning both the domestic and commercial sectors, industry innovators were tasked with producing safe, dependable and effective disinfection solutions that don’t rely on large doses of chlorine for the sanitisation of water. As a result of this challenge, there is now a wide range of treatments available which do exactly that, with UV systems and salt chlorinators leading the pack of the many alternatives that have been introduced over recent years. Lowering chlorine use in wet leisure settings, and in some cases, removing it completely, has been high on the agenda for many within both private and public environments and it provides a welcome answer for indoor pools to help eradicate the unwelcome odours we all too often associate with water that’s been treated with the chemical. Of course, chlorine will always have its place in the sanitation of pool and spa water, but reducing levels and reliance upon it or replacing it completely provides some much appreciated benefits. With a wide range of solutions and systems on offer, we take a look at just some of the low and no chlorine solution options that are available.

AQUASERVICE’S VERSATILE UV SYSTEM IS SUITABLE FOR ALL SWIMMING POOL TYPES According to Norwegian manufacturer Aquaservice, their AquaUV Pool Line UV System (AQS-PL UV for short) is the most

In addition, each system is sized and designed to achieve a minimum of a 99.9% reduction of cryptosporidium, therefore guaranteeing safe bathing for all with no risk of chlorine resistant organisms surviving in the water.

TDS: A Number In Search Of A Meaning In this piece, Australia-based independent pool and water treatment researcher David Watson looks at one of the most misunderstood measurements – Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) – and drawing on real-world experience, he explains why TDS is not a pass/fail limit and why water composition matters more than the number itself

A TALE OF TWO COUNTRIES AND YOUTHFUL ZEAL When I first started studying pools, back when enthusiasm was strong and experience was thin, one of the ‘facts’ I picked up was an international TDS limit. Something around 1,100 or 1,500 mg/L, depending on who you read. This seemed verified on the ground locally where I was at the time. In that environment, pools above the ‘limit’ were often green and unresponsive to treatment with chlorine, filtration, nothing seemed to recover them. (Please note, I have never used floc on a pool and was trained not to use it.) Based on that experience, I treated TDS as a hard limit. Once exceeded, draining was the only solution. Then… I moved countries. Suddenly, this fact, which was seared into my bones, was thrown out the window. Pools of all shapes and sizes came in with TDS sometimes 2,000, sometimes 3,000 or more, and crystal-clear water with no issues. So what changed?

factors, readings can vary between instruments, and absolute values are less meaningful than often assumed. In practice, TDS reflects the concentration of dissolved ionic species that contribute to conductivity, not the total mass of all dissolved substances.

WHY SALT READS HIGH When sodium chloride dissolves in water, it doesn’t stay together. It splits: • Sodium becomes Na+ • Chloride becomes ClThese ions are free and mobile, carrying a charge and significantly increasing conductivity. A lot of the chemicals we use behave similarly to salt. They split into individual charged ions. This is termed dissociation in chemistry. The table below lays out the dissociation of more common pool chemicals in water. As can be seen, nearly every chemical we add splits into individual ions and, as such, carries a charge, thereby increasing conductivity.

WHY SUGAR BARELY REGISTERS Sugar dissolves, but it does not dissociate. This is termed dissolution in chemistry and looks like this: • C12H22O11(s) becomes C12H22sO11(aq)

(Dissolution is the process by which a substance dissolves in water and becomes evenly dispersed as intact molecules, without breaking apart into charged ions.) Sugar dissolves but does not dissociate into ions. It remains as neutral molecules in solution, contributing to dissolved mass but negligibly to conductivity. So, the low reading isn’t because there are fewer total dissolved solids. It’s simply that there are fewer charged ions and, consequently, less conductivity. That distinction matters more than most people realise.

THE MISSING PIECE: WHAT THE TDS IS MADE OF Why in one country were pools above a nominal TDS amount green and impossible to recover, yet in a different place, the pools were running well outside this limit without issue? The answer isn’t the number, it’s the composition. In the ‘green soup’ environment, the water sources included bush runoff, agricultural contamination, dust and organic loading. The dissolved solids weren’t mostly benign salts. They were likely dominated by: • Phosphates • Nitrates • Dissolved organics • Bioavailable nutrients that actively feed algae

Stir each bucket until everything is fully dissolved. Now measure the TDS in each. What do we observe? • The salt bucket reads very high • The sugar bucket… barely moves the needle

WHAT TDS ACTUALLY IS TDS in pool testing is not a direct measurement of dissolved solids. It is an estimate derived from electrical conductivity, using a conversion factor that assumes the dissolved material behaves roughly like sodium chloride. In other words, the meter isn’t weighing what’s in the water. It’s listening to how well electricity moves through it. Because different meters use different

These substances often coincide with elevated TDS, but are not caused by it, and are not distinguished by the measurement. TDS acted as an indicator of contamination, and the consistent association made it appear causal. In the second country, there were a few differences. The water was more commonly sourced from groundwater. This water came out of the tap at about 600 mg/L TDS, a long way up from the dam water 50 mg/L I saw previously. Groundwater in this new country tended to be higher in chlorides and bicarbonates. Both of these naturally increase the TDS content. In a warmer climate, evaporation concentrates dissolved salts over time, increasing TDS without introducing biologically active contaminants. As a result, the TDS was dominated by: • Chloride accumulation • Bicarbonate buffering • An absence of biologically active contaminants. This composition was chemically stable and largely biologically inert.

WHY TDS CONVERSION FACTORS DON’T AGREE (THE ‘442’ ISSUE) Most conductivity based TDS meters assume the water behaves roughly like sodium chloride. Some instruments instead use a ‘442’ conversion factor, which assumes a mix of approximately 40% sodium sulphate, 40% sodium bicarbonate, and 20% sodium chloride. While this may be reasonable for natural waters, swimming pools typically contain very little sulphate and are dominated by sodium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions. As a result, applying a 442 factor to pool water can significantly misrepresent the actual dissolved solids present. You don’t need to memorise this. It’s included to explain why different meters can report very different TDS values for the same water. It is worth noting that different substances impact TDS differently. The actual

electrochemistry behind this is beyond the scope of this article. However, for understanding, the graph (above left) shows indicative, system level differences in how major anions tend to dominate conductivity readings in treated pool water. This is why TDS meters mostly respond to chloride, even when other substances are causing the real problems. For completeness, the same conductivity dominance is seen on the cation side graph (above right), where sodium overwhelmingly contributes to the measured signal in most swimming pools. Together, sodium and chloride explain why TDS rises steadily even in otherwise stable, healthy pools.

WHY SIMPLE RULES BREAK DOWN Rules of thumb, such as ‘high TDS kills chlorine’ or ‘above X mg/L the pool is dead’, fail because TDS aggregates all dissolved material. Nutrients, salts, metals and organics – into a single value. Two pools with identical TDS can behave entirely differently depending on the actual composition.

WHAT TDS IS ACTUALLY USEFUL FOR Used properly, TDS can indicate: • Accumulation of by products. • Dilution. • Unexpected source of dissolved ions. • Salt is becoming a potential corrosion risk (in above-ground pools, for example). It is not a diagnostic tool on its own. A high TDS pool does not fail because the number is high. Saltwater pools are a common proof of this. TDS only becomes important when it indicates that other dissolved substances are in excess.

THE REAL LESSON TDS isn’t misleading – it’s simply often misinterpreted. Many guidelines express TDS as a limit relative to source water, which can be useful operationally, but this does not change the underlying chemistry. Composition, not total value, determines impact. Historically, TDS served as a crude proxy

This relationship only holds when the accumulating material actually drives demand. In some settings, a high TDS is a symptom of nutrient overload and likely a high presence of phosphates and nitrates. Yet in others, it can simply be reporting the amount of sodium chloride in the sample and be completely benign. TDS is not a pass/fail metric. It is an indicator that requires interpretation, not blind following. A newly filled salt pool with a TDS of 4,000 mg/L may be perfectly fine, yet a school pool running calcium hypochlorite with the same reading may indicate it is time to consider increasing water loss and dilution. Next time a TDS reading looks elevated, the right question isn’t ‘how high is it?’ It’s ‘what’s it made of?’

It’s a sector which has embraced the latest advances in technology whilst also still producing more lowtech, tried and tested methods too. The result is a wide range of products, some of which have revolutionised the process. rystal clear, clean and safe water is an essential and expected part of the wet leisure experience, but the last thing owners and operators of pools and spas want to do is spend an excessive amount of time and energy testing and monitoring their water, let alone doing it with equipment that isn’t pinpoint accurate. Fast, straightforward and accurate water testing products are therefore top of the list of anyone involved in ensuring the quality of wet leisure water – not just for safety reasons, but also to ensure equipment is operating within the correct environment too. If it isn’t, there’s often a heavy price to pay with replacement items being needed earlier than expected. The safety of anyone enjoying the water is of course at the top of every pool or spa owners’ list though, and with commercial facilities experiencing much higher bather loads than their domestic cousins, owners and users need to be able to trust that the water being used by bathers is safe and in the best possible condition. Over recent years, considerable time and money has been spent on researching and developing more efficient and user-friendly testing systems, and that’s not surprising, as for commercial operators in particular, where there is the possibility of infection, only the latest products and best procedures are good enough. Down time as a result of poor procedures invariably leads to bad press, and this often spells disaster to a facility’s reputation, with guests then voting with their feet – a scenario to be avoided at all costs! Regardless of their size and setting, wet leisure facilities are always major investments for their

owners and they, along with the water within them, need to be kept in the best possible condition. So having the correct products to test water conditions on an ongoing basis is a must and here, we take a look at just some of the available solutions that are testing water efficiently and accurately.

For users, there can also be an uncomfortable environment to contend with too. So getting the conditions right is essential for both owners and users alike and in this issue, we take a closer look at some of the solutions on offer By Jon Wadeson

esigning, creating and maintaining the perfect environment for indoor swimming pools and spas is no easy task. It’s one thing ensuring the water is clean and heated to the desired operating temperature, but providing the correct atmosphere outside of the water is an entirely different challenge. Without providing effective dehumidification and ventilation, problems can arise for both users and operators of the facilities plus the fabric of the building too. One of the most obvious issues is condensation, something which if not dealt with, will ultimately lead to damage of either the décor or even the structure of the building itself. So it’s essential that an indoor environment should have a well-planned and appropriate dehumidification and ventilation system which will provide comfortable conditions for swimmers, bathers, spectators and staff, plus just as importantly, one that also protects the building. As you would expect, it’s a specialist area, but thankfully there’s plenty of knowledge, advice and product choices available which will solve numerous operating challenges under the single heading of ‘environmental control’ and in doing so, will save energy and therefore costs for owners and operators, whilst also ensuring the longevity of the wider installation and its equipment. With the wealth of expertise that’s available in the sector, designers and installers should find that choosing the most energy efficient way to manage indoor pool and spa environments whilst satisfying building control regulations isn’t as daunting a task as they had feared. In fact, creating the conditions for the perfect operating environment is now a breeze and in this issue, we look at just some of the solutions that are available.

Humidity As Crucial As Heat For Sauna Health Benefits New study involving Harvia has challenged global sauna norms as research has revealed that traditional Finnish ‘löyly’ (sauna steam) is a key driver of sauna’s physiological effects, offering a more effective and pleasant experience than just dry heat

groundbreaking study from Finland, the home of sauna, is set to redefine the global understanding of what constitutes an optimal sauna experience. Research conducted by Harvia, a global leader in the sauna market, in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä and the Finnish Institute of High-Performance Sport (KIHU), scientifically proves for the first time that humidity is an independent and powerful factor in delivering the physiological benefits of sauna, on par with temperature. The findings were published in the peerreviewed journal ‘Temperature’. The findings challenge the ‘hot and dry’ sauna culture prevalent in many parts of the world and provide a scientific explanation for the traditional Finnish practice of throwing water on sauna stones – a practice known as ‘löyly’. The study, the most comprehensive of its kind to simultaneously measure the sauna environment and the human body’s response, found that both temperature and humidity independently increase heart rate and core body temperature. The average heart rate increase observed was 41.6 beats per minute; a cardiovascular response comparable to moderate-intensity exercise. “For decades, sauna research has focused almost exclusively on temperature. Our study changes the conversation,” said Timo Harvia, Chief Technology Officer at Harvia. “We now have scientific proof for what Finns have known instinctively for centuries: the steam from löyly is not just for comfort, it is a critical tool for regulating the sauna’s health impact. This study explains why throwing water on the stones feels so good – it’s actively enhancing the body’s response. We are happy to share this knowledge with other researchers to advance a broader understanding of the health effects of sauna.”

A NEW PERSPECTIVE FOR INTERNATIONAL SAUNA ENTHUSIASTS This research has significant implications for global sauna cultures. In a wellness landscape increasingly focused on biohacking and measurable results, the study’s finding that humidity independently raises core body temperature is crucial. The research shows that a traditional Finnish sauna with löyly is a highly effective way to

achieve this key health marker. In markets like Germany, where ‘combi’ heaters with steam functions and ritualistic Aufguss ceremonies are popular, the study provides new insight. It demonstrates that the user-controlled, dynamic humidity created by traditional löyly offers a powerful, direct method to customise the sauna’s intensity and physiological effect, potentially offering a more impactful experience than automated steaming.

THE SCIENCE OF STEAM AND A MULTITUDE OF HEALTH BENEFITS The study revealed that the relative humidity in the sauna room was 6% among a group that did not throw löyly, whereas the group that threw löyly the most reached a relative humidity level of 59%. The 53-percentage point difference in relative humidity is significant and equals to almost 0.5°C rise in core temperature. To unlock many of sauna’s wellbeing benefits, the body typically needs to raise its core temperature by around 0.5–2°C. Löyly is fundamental to achieving this efficiently, making it one of the defining elements of the authentic sauna experience. These findings build upon a robust body of existing research that has documented the extensive health benefits of regular sauna use. ABOUT THE STUDY Fifty healthy adults participated in four 10-minute sauna sessions. The four saunas used different heater types: electric, woodburning, gas and hydrogen. All were set to approximately 75°C, but participants were free to throw löyly as much or as little as they liked after the first two minutes of each session. Throughout, researchers precisely measured the sauna cabin’s temperature and humidity at multiple points while simultaneously tracking participants’ core body temperature, skin temperature and heart rate. This dual-measurement methodology is a first in sauna science, providing an unprecedentedly clear link between the environment and the body’s response.
