Since the last issue, the UK’s weather has been its usual, unpredictable self, with March being a big improvement on February’s rather dull affair. Improving weather is normally the trigger for our industry to kick into gear, but with so many economic uncertainties that the UK, along with the wider world, is facing, I have a feeling that a long spell of decent weather is going to be one of the few things that will provide the perfect distraction to regional and global events and the knock-on effects that they cause.

Increasing costs are just one of those current effects – both in terms of actual products and services, but also with energy too. They were on the rise long before conflict broke out in the Middle East, but that has made matters worse. Therefore, minimising or better still, reducing running costs is going to play a big part in our industry for the foreseeable future in both commercial and domestic settings.

Unsurprisingly, energy costs and making savings were once again hot topics at this year’s milestone 30th anniversary edition of SPATEX, which took place at the start of February at the Coventry Building Society Arena. As sponsors of the new products on show, SPN were once again pleased to be at the three-day event and chat with both exhibitors and visitors about new products, services, initiatives and of course some of the challenges the industry is facing. The event once again saw a superb effort from in excess of a hundred exhibitors that showcased some very professional stands,

and we’ve more on the show in our review later in this issue.

Held during SPATEX, the annual British Pool & Hot Tub Awards hosted by SPATA and BISHTA returned with their evening event that celebrates some of the best wet leisure projects from across the industry. Inside, we’ve coverage on all the Gold Award winners from this year’s event along with a write-up on the Industry Gala Evening itself. As ever, I would just like to say congratulations to all who entered and the companies who picked up any kind of Award during the evening.

Also in this issue, we take a look at what’s new in the world of one-piece and fibreglass swimming pools, a sector that’s enjoyed continued success due to providing a relatively stress-free installation experience. We’ve an in depth look at the latest automatic slatted pool cover systems too. Waterstream Celebrates Its 20 Year Anniversary

From humble beginnings in Alex’s bedroom, Waterstream has since expanded to its current 1.6 acre site with a 10,000sq ft warehouse and bespoke production facilities. Waterstream marked a significant milestone on Friday 16 January, celebrating 20 years in business. The Waterstream team and their guests celebrated with a special anniversary party held at their newly renovated headquarters in Coolham, West Sussex. The

event brought together the founders and their families, Waterstream team members, including many long standing colleagues, international partners and many others who have played a part in the company’s impressive growth.

The company was founded by Alex Kemsley and Simon Dickson, two ambitious entrepreneurs who saw a gap in the UK market for premium swimming pools. In 2010 they became the sole UK distributor of Compass Pools. Over the past two decades the team have helped hundreds of customers choose the perfect location, style and

New Milestone For Hartlepool’s Wellbeing Hub

Construction of Hartlepool’s new flagship Highlight Active Wellbeing Hub has reached an exciting new milestone with the multi-million pound development entering the final fit-out stage.

Located at The Waterfront within Hartlepool marina, the state-ofthe-art facility will replace Mill House Leisure Centre, which opened its doors in 1972 and has now reached the end of its operational life.

Highlight, built by principal contractor Wates, will be run by Hartlepool Borough Council’s Active Hartlepool service and is set to become one of the most impressive community active wellbeing destinations in the region, with a range of accessible, affordable and high-quality facilities and equipment.

To mark the latest milestone, a time capsule was buried within Highlight’s grounds at a special ceremony.

Highlight is being funded by Hartlepool Borough Council, Tees Valley Combined Authority, and Sport England and construction began in early 2024.

Designed by GT3 Architects, who worked closely with the Council’s in-house team, the building features three swimming pools: a 25m eight-lane main pool, a 25m four-lane learner pool with moveable floor and a leisure pool with race slide and interactive water play features.

The buidling grows in height from west to east, offering sweeping views across The Waterfront and Hartlepool marina. Its striking linear silhouette draws inspiration from the historic railway lines that once connected local timber and coal yards to the former dockland site during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

ESSEX GETS NEW POOLS AT EPPING LEISURE CENTRE

A new Essex leisure centre officially opened its doors earlier in the year. Epping Leisure Centre is a brand-new facility, and in addition to enjoying its many health and fitness facilities, members and visitors will be able to enjoy a swim in either its 25m main swimming pool, or its learner pool. The centre will also be running swimming lessons for all ages, following Swim England’s Learn to Swim framework.

NEW HAMPSHIRE LEISURE CENTRE GETS GREEN LIGHT

Planning permission for a new leisure centre in Farnborough, Hampshire has been approved, subject to legal agreement, paving the way for work to start on site in early summer.

The new centre will be built in the heart of the town centre and will offer a 25-metre swimming pool and learner pool with moveable floor, along with a wide range of other health, fitness and leisure facilities. Planning consent was agreed by Rushmoor Borough Council’s Development Management Committee in March, with final authority to confirm permission delegated to the Chairman and Executive Head of Property and Growth once legal agreements with Hampshire County Council are confirmed.

The decision is the final goahead needed for development work to start on the centre towards the end of June and completion and fit-out scheduled for late 2027.

Popular Community Pool Upgrades Its Aging Heatstar

Opened just over 50 years ago, and situated in the seaside town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight, Waterside Pool provides swimming activities for both visitors and locals alike.

In the late 2000s Heatstar were consulted to install a new air handling system for the pool, with the site taking advantage at the time of Heatstar’s recently introduced new EC range of environmental control systems, and installing a Taurus EC. These systems were an industry first and featured EC low energy fan technology that is still utilised by Heatstar today and is now see as an industry norm. Nearly 20 years later and Heatstar have once again been tasked with upgrading the current system.

With energy efficiency key, the first stage was the installation of 76 photovoltaic solar panels, through which the centre anticipates the generation of an estimated 24,000Wh and savings of more than 6 tons of CO2 emissions each year.

A Heatstar Taurus EC HP 120 Super+ was specified to assist with the club’s energy efficient vision. This high capacity system provides effective and efficient environmental control and has been designed solely for municipal and large leisure centre swimming pools.

Heatstar have built a reputation as a manufacturer of totally bespoke systems and all airflows, dimensions and even the orientation of the Taurus unit were designed to match the existing ductwork meaning minimal installation work. This allowed the facility to operate as normal during the installation works.

To complement the Heatstar Taurus unit, an updated boiler system was installed in close proximity to provide a primary heating loop and improved energy efficiency.

Not only did the replacement unit get the site back up and running to expected conditions, but the site will also see a significant reduction to their

ongoing running costs due to the increased efficiency and performance of the Heatstar system.

Alliance Leisure Appointed to Deliver Landmark £20.5m Leisure Centre In Kent

Following planning approval, work is now gathering pace to replace Deal’s ageing Tides Leisure Centre, which was built in the 1980s, with a new facility designed around today’s lifestyles and tomorrow’s ambitions. Backed by a £20.5m investment from Dover District Council, the new centre will deliver modern, energy-efficient facilities that inspire active living and bring the community together.

On the wet leisure side, the development proposal features a six-lane swimming pool, toddler splash pad and new pool platform lift ensuring the centre caters for everyone.

A sports hall and tennis centre from the original building will be retained.

The new centre will also be built with energy efficiency at the forefront of the design, including air source heat pumps, roof-mounted solar panels and energy-saving LED lighting throughout.

Demolition of the existing Tides pool and reception area is already completed, with construction of the new facility due to begin later this year. The new centre is expected to be fully operational in summer 2027.

The project was procured through the UK Leisure Framework, owned and managed by Denbighshire Leisure Ltd, and supported by a team of sector specialists including Pellikaan Construction, GT3 Architects, Hadron Consulting, CGP, Engenuiti and Southern Green.

COUNCIL CONFIRMS HISTORIC £9.3M INVESTMENT

Residents across Fylde in Lancashire are celebrating after councillors gave the green light to the most ambitious leisure investment in the Council's history by approving a transformative £9.3m package that will see St Annes Pool completely modernised and Kirkham Baths reopened for the community.

The main pools at both sites will remain at the heart of the facilities, continuing to provide swimming lessons, lane swimming and community swimming sessions for residents of all ages and abilities. St Annes Pool will be transformed with modern leisure facilities, while Kirkham Baths will be fully restored with a reconditioned pool and new fitness suite, and historic features protected where possible. The Council will be working in partnership with Places Leisure to deliver the investment to both sites under a 15-year contract.

PLANS PROGRESS FOR WHITTLESEY TRANSFORMATION

Alliance Leisure is working in partnership with Fenland District Council to progress plans for the redevelopment of Manor Leisure Centre in Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Submitted in December, the planning application has now been validated, confirming it contains the information required for formal assessment and marking the start of the decision-making timetable.

As part of the council’s member-led Fenland Inspire! investment programme, the scheme proposes a comprehensive redevelopment and extension of the existing swimming pool building alongside the demolition of the separate sports hall. If approved, the project will create a more efficient, fit-forpurpose facility designed to serve the community for decades to come.

Stepnell Completes Landmark Leisure Centre For Lichfield

Regional construction firm Stepnell has successfully completed an £11.3m leisure centre at Stychbrook Park in Lichfield, marking a significant milestone in leisure provision in the district.

Officially opened by Double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington OBE, the Staffordshire centre, which replaces the Friary Grange Sports Centre, features a 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool, plus numerous other exciting new facilities.

The project was procured through the Procure Partnerships Framework, with Stepnell appointed by Lichfield District Council as the complete design and build construction partner.

working collaboratively with Lichfield District Council and The ReCreation Group and engaging with community organisations including The Friends of Priory Grange, we have ensured the facility meets ambitions for a high-quality, contemporary leisure and community asset that will deliver long-term health and social benefits for Lichfield.”

Underwater Mosaic Tiling Repairs: Preserving Pools Without Downtime

Mosaic tiling remains one of the most striking finishes for swimming pools, offering durability alongside visual impact. The Salisbury-based company, operating since 1997, was awarded the contract last summer to replace the vessel’s existing commercial hydrotherapy unit as part of a wider refurbishment programme. MS Borealis, which joined the Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines fleet in 2020, required a fully tailored solution to meet the vessel’s spatial constraints and marine operating standards.

KLAFS, a world leader in sauna and thermal wellness solutions, continues its strategic expansion into the UK’s commercial hospitality sector with a landmark installation at The Newman hotel in Fitzrovia. This recently opened venue is London’s first hotel spa to feature a fully integrated KLAFS Ice Lounge and Salt Room, and along with the numerous other facilities installed, the project enables guests to experience a complete thermal journey within a single setting.

Months of planning and design coordination preceded the installation. The project centred on developing a bespoke hydrotherapy unit engineered to integrate with the ship’s plant room configuration and onboard systems.

In late October, Catalina Spas’ specialist team travelled to the Port of Southampton to board the vessel before its scheduled dry dock in Rotterdam. With tight timeframes and complex logistics in place, work began immediately on arrival.

Engineers first dismantled the existing spa shell and associated plumbing and plant equipment in a careful sequence suited to the confined plant-room layout. This phase required several days of methodical removal to avoid disruption to surrounding systems.

Once cleared, the new hydrotherapy shell was manoeuvred into position and secured before teams installed upgraded plumbing, plant equipment, and a dedicated airline to optimise performance.

All systems were pressure-tested, calibrated, and fully commissioned to meet strict marine compliance standards, ensuring reliable operation in a high-usage cruise environment accommodating up to 1,400 guests per sailing while strengthening Catalina’s growing commercial portfolio.

The Fluidra Foundation, Fluidra and the Pasqual Maragall Foundation have formalised a strategic alliance to launch ‘Unforgettable Pools’, a pioneering study with a dual ambition: to create a reference model that ensures swimming pools (their spaces, activities and social dynamics) take into account the needs of people with cognitive impairment, and to advance knowledge on the benefits of aquatic physical activity for these groups.

The initiative envisions a comprehensive transformation of swimming pools based on four areas of action: the training of professionals –reaching nearly 200 workers, including instructors, lifeguards and front-desk staff – to help them recognise signs of cognitive impairment and communicate effectively; the adaptation of aquatic activities, with sessions and schedules tailored to the needs of these groups; the improvement of physical spaces through measures that enhance the cognitive accessibility of the facilities; and stronger connections with the community support network to make it easier for those who could benefit from these activities to access them.

The project will be implemented in Catalonia, where it will be progressively rolled out in 8 to 10 pilot pools. Based on this experience, it will generate practical tools such as adaptation guides, training for professionals and operational protocols that will enable the model to be replicated in other facilities.

What an amazing experience it was to be able to celebrate SPATEX’s 30th anniversary at the start of February!

The three days flew by, but what a great opportunity it was to bring exhibitors and visitors together under one roof in Coventry. The blend of exhibition, education, and entertainment was in evidence throughout the week. The SPATEX team excelled themselves this year, not only with the show, but with the SPATEX Party, then the curry and ‘Bandaoke’ evening. Michele Bridle, Helen Mulingani, Kayleigh Biggs and Penny Farmer pulled out all the stops this year to make it a memorable event in the industry calendar.

Huge thanks are due to Luke Griffiths (and his ISPE colleagues) for putting on an excellent workshop programme in Seminar Arena 1. Thank you also to the other industry bodies, such as the STA, PWTAG, IoS and RLSS UK, for their respective contributions to the SPATEX seminars in Arena 2. The collaboration between these other industry bodies is fantastic, and this year there was the bonus of several of them sharing the same stand space with BISHTA and SPATA on the new Industry Hub.

The gala evening recognises the achievements of the committee members for their outstanding service to the industry, and this year, Peter Lang was recognised for his amazing work with SPATA and EUSA. Peter will be stepping down as Technical Advisor at the beginning of April, but he is still willing to help SPATA with inspections and other technical advice.

It is always a proud moment when the relevant winners of the British Pool & Hot Tub Awards are short-listed for the EUSA Awards, and these members will be announced in the December issue of SPN. The judging will take place over the summer and the winners of the 2026 EUSA awards will be announced at Piscine Global, in Lyon, this November.

In other news, the work on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) continues to evolve, with an initiative to bring together women who can help to influence what goes on in the industry. It is hoped the group will identify ways in which other women can be supported to get more involved in the committees and to make presentations. There is also the GoFundMe to generate funds to raise awareness of EDI and to offer low-cost training courses. The Importance Of Legionella Competent Persons Training

As the leisure sector continues to prioritise health and safety in 2026, there is an increasing focus on the effective control of waterborne hazards – particularly the Legionella bacteria. Here, STA Pool Plant Tutors Chris Bateman and Robbie Phillips highlight the importance of raising water safety standards

Latest government figures show that 472 cases of legionellosis were reported in England and Wales in 2024, with the majority occurring in individuals aged 60 and over, highlighting the ongoing public health risk posed by Legionella across a range of environments. These include swimming pools, spas, interactive water features, hotels and fitness centres, where complex water systems, if poorly managed, can present a serious risk of Legionnaires’ disease. Strengthening the competence of those responsible for these systems is therefore critical.

Legionella control is not optional –it is a legal requirement. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act and COSHH regulations, duty holders must identify risks, implement appropriate control measures, and ensure systems are properly managed and maintained. The Approved Code of Practice L8 and HSG274 provide clear guidance, placing strong emphasis on the appointment of a ‘competent person’ to oversee water hygiene for the entire building premises. However, competence is often misunderstood. It is not simply about holding a title; it is about having the appropriate knowledge, training, experience and authority to manage risk effectively. Failures in this area can have serious consequences, including outbreaks of illness, enforcement action and reputational damage.

Across the sector, several recurring issues continue to be identified. These include inadequate temperature control, poor system design or maintenance, infrequent monitoring, and incomplete or inconsistent record keeping. In some cases, duty holders rely too heavily on external contractors without maintaining sufficient internal understanding or oversight. This disconnect can weaken control measures and delay corrective action when problems arise. Training plays a central role in addressing these challenges. Following its announcement at SPATEX in February, the STA Legionella Competent Person Course is now live, providing a structured and accessible pathway

for improving water safety knowledge and compliance.

This unregulated course is designed to train learners to act as a Legionella Competent Person, capable of carrying out risk assessments, implementing control measures, and ensuring proper monitoring and record-keeping to manage Legionella risks effectively. A Legionella Competent Person is an individual appointed to manage the risk of Legionella bacteria on a site, possessing sufficient authority, competence and knowledge of water systems and relevant health and safety laws. The role is vital for ensuring compliance and preventing Legionnaires’ disease, which can have severe health consequences.

Importantly, the course is not limited to the leisure or aquatics sector. It is suitable for anyone responsible for a building with a water supply and is open to all individuals who are required –or have a responsibility –to test, check, or maintain safe water systems.

The programme provides learners with essential knowledge on how Legionella is transmitted, the responsibilities of a competent person, and the legislation they must adhere to. It also covers practical risk management strategies, including how to identify hazards and reduce the risk of Legionella proliferation.

On successful completion of the course, learners will be issued with a STA Legionella Competent Person certificate, which is valid for three years.

course allows learners to study at their own pace and revisit content as needed for continued guidance. This accessibility supports both initial learning and ongoing professional development. Alongside this new offering, the course continues to reflect STA’s broader approach to competency-based training. It covers key areas such as Legionella biology and risk factors, system design considerations, monitoring and control regimes and legal responsibilities. Crucially, it emphasises practical application –ensuring learners can interpret guidance, implement control measures effectively and respond appropriately to system failures or adverse results.

A strong emphasis remains on the role of the competent person in developing, implementing and reviewing written schemes of control. This includes ensuring that monitoring regimes are suitable, records are accurate and up to date, and corrective actions are both timely and effective. The ability to challenge, verify and manage contractors is also highlighted as a key component of maintaining safe and compliant systems.

Industry guidance is clear: prevention is far more effective than reaction. Legionella risks can be controlled through consistent application of temperature management, system cleanliness, the prevention of stagnation and regular monitoring. However, these controls are only as effective as the individuals responsible for implementing them.

By investing in competency-based training, operators can strengthen internal capability, improve compliance, and reduce reliance on reactive measures. This not only protects public health but also supports operational resilience and builds confidence across facilities.

As the industry continues to evolve, the role of the competent person will remain central to safe water management. Ensuring individuals are properly trained, supported and empowered is essential to maintaining high standards and preventing avoidable incidents.

New Products, Innovation And Much More At SCP UK’s Impressive Showcase Event

Taking place at the start of March ,here we highlight SCP UK’s 2026 Showcase event. Set in stunning surroundings, this well organised day played host to numerous suppliers and their products who welcomed many enthusiastic attendees drawn from right across the wet leisure sector

Taking place in the stunning setting of the Ashdown Park Hotel in Wych Cross, East Sussex, wet leisure distributor SCP UK hosted their annual Showcase event on 5 March – and the glorious weather on the day, the unique and stunning setting, plus more importantly, the overall event proved to be a real hit to all who made their way to the Ashdown Forest-based venue.

Having prepared for what Regional Manager Simon Cook and rest of his SCP team expected to be a busy day, from the moment visitors pulled into the spacious car park of the countryside venue, with numerous company vehicles from the pool and spa trade already present, it was clear the trade were keen to discover more about the company’s latest offerings and plan for the season ahead.

This single-day event focused on new products and innovation from a wide selection of SCP UK’s suppliers. Split across two floors and set within multiple rooms, the space allowed the distributor and its partners a large area within which they were able to display numerous products and share with guests new developments and insights that are not yet widely available in the market, plus have meaningful conversations about how SCP and its suppliers can support a company’s business objectives moving forward.

Having decided not to take a stand at February’s SPATEX exhibition, the Showcase was an incredibly important day for the SCP UK team, as it allowed them to demonstrate the company’s diverse range of products, not only in the private pool domain, but also in the commercial pool, water treatment, hot tub and wellness sectors too.

As with their previous Showcase events, guests arriving early were treated to breakfast rolls and refreshments, and for those arriving later, a stand up buffet was provided at lunchtime. Throughout the day, a steady stream of attendees were invited to peruse a wide range of vendor stands and to network with professionals from across the pool and spa industry. This year, SCP UK had the pleasure of welcoming a number of both existing and new, UK-based and International suppliers to the Showcase. Just some of the companies and brands at the venue included: Aquafinesse, Ardex, Davey, Elecro Engineering, Emaux, Griffon, Harvia, Hayward, HTH, Intopool, LaMotte, Latham, Lovibond, Pentair, Total Water Products, Waterco, Week End Spas… the list goes on as roughly thirty brands were in attendance – a pretty impressive number which was appreciated by day’s guests.

SPATEX’s 30th Anniversary Edition Delivers In Style!

The water leisure industry from the UK and further afield arrived at the Coventry Building Society Arena at the start of February for the annual three-day SPATEX exhibition. Celebrating a milestone 30th edition as a live event, and with more than just products and stands on offer, there was plenty for visitors to see and do once again at the Midlands venue

As the UK’s only dedicated wet leisure exhibition and the first international showcase of water leisure in the calendar year, SPATEX has firmly established itself as the must-attend event for anyone involved in the sector. The three-day exhibition, held annually at the Coventry Building Society Arena, attracts a wide range of visitors involved in the provision and operation of swimming pools, hot tubs, spas, saunas, steam, ice baths and other wellness facilities… in short, anything that involves recreational water.

This year’s event was a special occasion. With a milestone 30th anniversary to celebrate, it had a lot to live up to, but once again the SPATEX team delivered and the water leisure industry showed it is alive and well! The event registered a 14% year-on-year increase in visitor attendance meaning the show recorded its highest number of both visitors and exhibitors at the Coventry venue.

The stands were busy with visitors viewing the vast array of latest ‘must-have’ innovations that span the industry – with many of the

displays water-filled and in operation. Indeed, the diversity of the exhibits was as great as their number.

SPATEX Organiser, Michele Bridle said: “This show proved to be the highlight of my career, not just in terms of the impressive number of visitors and exhibitors it attracted, but also the buzz and the feel good factor that it generated and which promises to carry the industry through the forthcoming pool and spa season.

“The vibrant 2026 edition demonstrates just how integral water leisure has become to 21st century life, and its influence and importance are ever-expanding in this increasingly health-conscious world we live in.”

accredited ISPE (Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers) technical workshops.

New for 2026, the Industry Hub saw a constant footfall throughout the three days of the show. Conveniently situated on one stand, visitors were able to receive a bounty of free and impartial advice from the BSPF (British Swimming Pool Federation) representing SPATA (Swimming Pool & Allied Trades Association) and BISHTA (British & Irish Spa & Hot Tub Association), RLSS UK (Royal Life Saving Society UK), IOS (Institute of Swimming), PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) and STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association).

The LCA (Legionella Control Association) and WMSoc (Water Management Society) also brought their expertise to the table, giving keynote talks in the seminar arenas. SPATEX also hosted a joint LCA

and WMSoc all-day seminar and a STA and IOS Tutor CPD morning.

With the ‘who’s who’ of water leisure gathered under one roof, as always, the networking opportunities were plentiful. The BSPF hosted an entertaining Wet Leisure Industry Gala Evening & Awards, highlighting exemplary projects and honouring winners who continue to raise industry standards and deliver exceptional results (both of which are covered earlier on in this issue).

The following evening, SPATEX hosted a special anniversary edition of the now famous SPATEX Networking Party. Visitors and exhibitors enjoyed challenging and cheering on colleagues with a variety of interactive games and fantastic prizes. With the night still young, the fun continued with a Bandeoke Curry Night, with many taking to the stage, complete with a lively audience providing an exuberant support act.

With so much taking place under one roof, SPATEX provides an all encompassing event making it an annual one-stop shop for everything wet leisure in the UK, and therefore, one which should always feature in the plans of anyone involved in the sector.

Greg David – aka ‘The Hot Tub Guy’ – summed up the views of many who visited Coventry: “It’s been a great day at SPATEX meeting all the industry leaders and seeing all the new products, next year we

will have to do two full days so we can get to every stall, there are so many people to talk to and amazing innovators in our industry. Highly recommended going.”

As always, it’s impossible to provide more details here for the workshops or products that stood out, but some of the innovations on show and topics discussed have once again been included throughout this issue either as news or within our features. More of them will follow in subsequent issues throughout the year and some we have already featured previously in the run up to SPATEX. When it comes to the seminars and workshops, for anyone that missed them, they are all available to view on YouTube – a new innovation for this year.

Of course, it should go without saying that for exhibitors, first and foremost, SPATEX is an exhibition and provides a unique platform to showcase products and/or services directly to anyone operating within or at least working with the wet leisure sector. So feedback from exhibitors is always key and an important measure of the event’s strengths and a chance to flag any areas for improvement too. But given the numbers of visitors and the celebratory mood, it’s no real surprise that the overwhelming majority of views and feedback has been positive. An example being SPATEX regular Chris Brady of 1 Stop Spas who

commented: “Congratulations to SPATEX for their 30th anniversary and without a doubt, the best edition of SPATEX I’ve had the pleasure of visiting and exhibiting at.”

Chris Green of Certikin said: “SPATEX once again proved why it’s such a key date in our calendar. As always, the event was exceptionally well organised, creating the perfect environment for productive conversations and giving us the opportunity to showcase our products to both existing and new customers.”

After what was such a successful event, and one to remember for all that attended, Organiser, Michele Bridle summed up the event: “The exhibition hall looked stunning! The exhibitors set the bar high regarding the quality of their stands – I am grateful for all their hard work which contributed to making the show so full of energy and colour. As an exhibition organiser, when 12 months of preparation comes down to just three show days, it is gratifying to see the industry’s overwhelmingly positive response and be rewarded with such a fantastic turnout of 1,742 unique visitors.”

The promise of convenience across many fronts is their biggest draw. Whether it is the initial choosing of one, the delivery times (at least under normal circumstances), their relatively straightforward and speedy installation or the fact that a lot of the fittings and equipment are in place and ready to go direct from the factory – pools of this type definitely provide a quick, fairly simple and stress-free solution which also results in minimal disruption too.

Add in a wide range of models, colours, access options and finishing choices, and then combine those with low ongoing maintenance costs, stunning modern looks, competitive pricing, peace of mind warranties… well, the list goes on and for the vast majority of swimming pool owner needs, there’s a suitable option on offer, especially as

The Roussillon submerged automatic models allow for seamless integration with the pool. The roller mechanism is located in a separate sunken compartment sectioned off from the pool by a brick or PVC panel.

For existing pools, above-ground models such as Carlit, Octea, Sveltea and Ballesun feature a fastened winding shaft that integrates with the pool decking, offering convenience and practicality. The Roldeck Easy Cover is an affordable electronic automatic cover, suitable for pools up to a maximum of 12m x 6m. Conceptual and intelligent, the systems consist of high-quality PVC slats specially developed for use in both indoor and outdoor pool applications which have been designed to resist UV and all elements, such as hail, frost plus a wide range of temperatures from20°C to +35°C.

Do We Have An Innovation Gap That Is Holding The Industry Back?

“Is our industry currently in a period of growth, stagnation or decline? Experiences and views on this differ due, mainly, to the massive impact of the pandemic. For me, overall, I feel that the industry is still readjusting back to equivalent pre-pandemic trajectory levels. But when we get there, what next?” asks Neil Stephenson, Managing Director at Certikin

In November last year, I was interested to read an article by Dash Ganeson (Honorary Treasurer, SPATA and a former Director of SCP UK Ltd) on the state of the industry. Whilst I did not fully agree with all of Dash’s observations and comments, many elements of the narrative resonated with me – especially the necessity to find growth and resilience via innovation.

In our industry’s residential world, despite current trends and the demand for smaller, functional extensions to the home that bring wellness and health benefits, there is a strong argument to say that our core outputs are still high cost, luxury items serving a limited consumer base. If they are not destined to stay as such then I believe something must change. Don’t get me wrong, this industry serves everyone involved and associated with it very well and it is a delight to be part of it, but if we want it to develop, advance and expand, we need to encourage and embrace innovation – both in terms of product and mindset.

EVOLUTION, NOT REVOLUTION

Of course, we see new products placed on the market on a regular basis and some do bring innovation-based approaches. AI integration is clearly happening and is now commonly seen in robotic cleaners, heat pumps and control systems to name only a few, and connected devices, smart automation and energy efficient products are advancing all the time.

I would say however that most of the new products we see each year fall into the ‘evolution, not revolution’ category. They are effectively a slightly different and/or better way of doing the same thing. And we must remember that availability does not always equal adoption.

Advancements are present, but users may not always be inclined or encouraged to demand these developments when making decisions.

Take energy efficient products as an example. Naturally most of the population sees the benefit of caring for our environment (and sometimes getting cost savings along the way) with the appropriate products, but in our industry is anyone or anything driving this ‘innovation’, or is it being pushed by regulatory changes which force a response? My feeling is that in many cases it is the latter, and therefore innovation is of necessity as opposed to being visionary –thus it is limited.

I would not deny that these ‘evolutions’ are a very positive step – many parties play their part in these, and we certainly need them to continue –but they alone are not enough to drive the industry forward to another level.

THE FUNDAMENTALS

At its core, true advancement of our industry can only come with fundamental innovation of the base item, the pool itself, whether that be residential or commercial.

We know there is a great demand for swimming and wellness. We see numerous reports, both independent and industry generated, which highlight a desire from the population to enjoy these facilities both publicly and privately, and often this is accompanied by the aspiration to own the product itself.

Therefore, we need to find new ways to tap into this demand.

Reducing cost of the overall product package could certainly help this – it will effectively increase the exposure levels for both residential and commercial users, encouraging new builds and making renovation more palatable.

But based on the current contents of the overall package – labour, materials, taxes, energy, water etc – is this realistic without an innovative change? When is the last time something allowed a fundamental change in how a swimming pool was constructed, priced or maintained?

At its core, true advancement of our industry can only come with fundamental innovation of the base item, the pool itself...”

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

If we can identify if these innovative changes are possible – and I’m not claiming to have the solutions by the way, this is an opinion piece after all – I believe there is a great opportunity for this industry to develop and expand massively.

The UK creates a series of circumstances for us which do not help:

• The climate and the limited season are one, but we know that individuals do want to swim and experience leisure year-round.

• Land being at a premium is another, but we know there are at least some ways to combat this in terms of more compact products.

• Overall industry scale is a key issue – let’s face it, everything we do must generate the profit we all need and if volume isn’t there price often goes up to compensate. This scale situation is a huge barrier to innovation.

We therefore hit a vicious circle – how can we encourage true innovation if there is no real appetite for it?

Many could say that we are OK where we are. The structure of the industry is quite nicely protected from new entries who could threaten what we have in the UK, we are very good at what we do, and we do well within the constraints we have.

But for me, the future of the industry is limited if we take this view. Some technologies which are already baseline expectations in other industries have been quite slow to be adopted in our world, and if this continues, we will be held back from our potential.

We should consider where we could progress with 3D printing of concrete and sustainable plastics, with water-neutral systems, with pre-fab constructions, with decentralised energy – these are just a few examples of innovations which are driving other construction-based industries forward.

I feel we really need to open our minds to wider innovation and force a step away from the vicious circle.
