Our Approach to Healthcare Design In the world of healthcare architecture, the design of acute care facilities stands at the intersection of patient care, staff efficiency, and long-term adaptability. Additionally, our facilities are designed with intuitive wayfinding, reducing anxiety for both patients and visitors as they navigate the space. We also prioritize flexibility in our designs. Acute care facilities often need to accommodate various patient types, from those requiring intensive care to those in recovery. Our spaces are adaptable, allowing for different care levels within the same environment while ensuring comfort and privacy. While patient comfort is crucial, an equally important consideration in acute care facility design is staff efficiency. Healthcare professionals need environments that support their ability to deliver high-quality care in a timely and effective manner Our design philosophy at Stengel Hill centers around enhancing staff workflows by optimizing the layout of clinical spaces and creating direct, clear paths between key areas such as nursing stations, patient rooms, and support spaces. Our facilities incorporate centralized and decentralized nursing stations, flexible clinical spaces, and integrated technology systems to streamline operations and improve patient outcomes. Our designs also allow for staff collaboration and communication by integrating shared spaces where healthcare teams can consult and review cases efficiently. These features not only improve care delivery but also contribute to staff satisfaction and retention, which are critical in the fast-paced environment of acute care. Firm Introduction Our History Stengel Hill was founded in 1996 by Bradford (Brad) Stengel and Charles (Chip) Hill. SH is a full service Architectural and Interior Design Firm with offices in Louisville and Lexington, Kentucky, and Nashville, Tennessee. Their combined experience in the design of complex institutional, educational, and healthcare educational facilities totals more than 60 years. Nearly 28 years in, Brad and Chip continue to provide the leadership to grow their business through long-term dedication to clients and commitment to providing an exceptional work environment for our professional staff. Including our management team of 10 Architect Partners and four Associate Partners, SH provides our clients with the experienced resources of a 85+ member firm; including 27 registered Architects and 8 certified Interior Designers Our Philosophy Our focused Integrated Design Process, combined with our attention to detail and proven experience, provides our clients with an architectural partner whose objectives include providing design solutions for the immediate challenge, as well as laying the foundation for the long term goals of the facilities which we serve. SELECT DESIGN EXPERIENCE
New Medical Pavilion Acute Healthcare
Elizabethtown, Kentucky

The project will include a five-level building to be constructed west of Woodland Avenue, south of Long Avenue, and north of Patriot Parkway (Woodland Avenue will be closed). The first level will be partially below grade, but attach to the main hospital’s first floor. The first level will house the surgery areas, materials management, shelled space for future food service expansion, and the central energy plant. Surgery will include: three (3) cardiac catheterization procedure rooms, twelve (12) operating rooms (including one (1) hybrid operating room), associated support spaces for the surgery including registration, waiting, prep/
recovery, and central sterile processing. Materials management will have a truck court with a loading dock. The Central Energy Plant will include boilers, chillers, and emergency generators for the entire hospital; the hospital is investigating using geothermal energy to save money and be more sustainable. The second level will be the primary entry level, and adjacent to the parking lot. It will include the first level of the cancer center with radiation therapy (one shelled) and treatment planning. The fifth level will be shelled-in for future clinic growth.

Surgery Department, multiple imaging modalities, and a 20 bed Inpatient Nursing Unit. The 2-story Medical Office Building includes the Hospital Pharmacy, an Outpatient / Cardiac Rehab Center, an Infusion Center, and multiple LVHN Physician Clinics.

The proposed Addition to the existing Medical Services Pavilion consists of a new three-story (~80,675 gsf) structure and attached adjacent second-story (~590 gsf) Connector located on the campus of St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky. Site work will include utility relocation and burial, and campus road re-alignment. Additional renovation work within the existing Hospital to be included within this Project will include the demolition of an existing (~100 gsf) Second Floor Office and construction of a new Connector Entry Vestibule.
The new Medical Office Building project will bring together many of St. Claire’s regional professional service offices under a single roof. This will benefit the community by consolidating services onto a single campus, making it easier to get from a Physician Office in the Pavilion to Outpatient Support Services in the Pavilion or to Inpatient Diagnostic Care in the Hospital.

Norton Healthcare engaged SH to transform an existing neighborhood grocery and retail center into an Ambulatory Care Center to consolidate Physician Practices and Outpatient Services into a single facility reimagined for a new use. Services available at this facility include Primary Care, Immediate Care, Phlebotomy and Laboratory Services for the healthcare system’s regional market.
The development includes a new registration concept featuring digital kiosks to expedite the check-in process for the patients. This concept challenges conventional registration processes and sets the stage for future registration technology which will allow patients even quicker throughput. The new Entry/Lobby includes large windows which provide natural light, terrazzo flooring, walnut wood features and high ceilings.
New ‘D’ Building Johnstown, Pennsylvania

The Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center New D-Building and Concourse Project comprises of a large addition in the center of the existing medical campus as well as a series of renovation projects that will solve clinical issues for the caregivers, provide a cohesive connection for a currently segmented campus, and provide for future patient bed expansion options. The central component of the project is a 5-Story New “D-Building”. The first two stories of the “D-Building are below-grade and provide staff and patient circulation connections between three
existing buildings as well as shell space. The third level provides a new Cardiovascular Center, and an Endoscopy Center and also permits relocation of all Diagnostic Imaging Services. The fourth level contains a new Central Sterile Services Department as well as a relocated and expanded Ambulatory Staging Unit that will provide efficiencies by being located directly adjacent to the Surgical Suite instead of on another floor. The fifth floor of the building provides physician support spaces and a mechanical penthouse that will serve as a platform for a planned vertical expansion of 6 floors of patient bed units.

The project included the selective demolition and renovation of approximately 3,000 square feet for the renovation and build-out of General and Hybrid Operating Rooms, as well as Paracentesis Suite on the first floor at the Baptist Health Floyd Campus in
New Albany, Indiana. The demolition and renovation work was separated into four different bid packages covering different areas throughout the hospital.

The Bluegrass Specialty Surgery Center project involves the partial renovation to an existing ~112,000 GSF, three-story business occupancy building for a state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Center. The scope of work includes selective demolition, renovation, and conversion of ~25,000 sf of the first floor as well as ~6,200 sf of the basement to continue the mission to offer safe, high-quality, personalized, concierge-style surgical care.
The first floor will include a dedicated new entry and lobby, 8 Operating Rooms, 23 Prep-Recovery Holding Bays, Staff and Administrative spaces. The basement will provide a complete centralized sterilization suite, facility storage as well as Pack, and Assembly services. This comprehensive renovation project will bring new life to an existing structure, creating a modern, functional space for surgical procedures and patient care.

Diagnostic Imaging, Rehab Services, Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab, Pulmonary Function Testing, MedWell, Corporate Care, Outpatient Surgery, a Pain/Neurosciences Clinic, and a variety of other Physician Clinics.
Medical Office Building/ Research Center Pikeville, Kentucky

Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) selected Stengel Hill (SH) to provide Programming, Planning, Design, and Construction Administration Services for this eleven-story, 229,000 SF Hospital Expansion and ten-level, 394,000 SF Parking Garage Project in Pikeville, Kentucky. The Hospital Expansion provides the space required to address the organization’s immediate needs in Outpatient Surgery, Gastrointestinal Services, and on-campus Physician Practices as well as Shell Space for future growth. The Project was funded through the Rural Development/USDA as
part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. SH played an integral role in assisting the Hospital navigate the USDA Requirements to ensure the design, bidding and construction processes were in compliance with the Federal Regulations. The Project includes energy conscious design features such as a complete Geothermal HVAC System, Natural Day-Lighting, Energy-Efficient Exterior Envelope Design, and Solar-Reflective Roofing, among others.
