DIRECTOR'S LETTER Jason Steuber, Appleton Director Warmest Fall Greetings, I am happy to share that the Appleton will have an exciting autumn and winter holiday season full of in-person and virtual experiences. New exhibitions by Florida-based artists anchor the opening of our busiest season. Juliet van Otteren’s exceptional photographic eye captures horses in all their splendor and majesty while Susan Martin’s technical mastery depicts the wonders found in the botanical world. The important traveling loan exhibition “Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouvea” is an opportunity to walk amidst one of the most important private collections of this world-famous Czech artist. “A Dickens Christmas” display will be the most joyous place to enjoy the museum’s world-class art collections alongside friends and family. The Appleton Store promises to have one-of-a-kind jewelry, books and gifts for everyone who made it onto your nice list. Enjoy the Appleton’s offerings of studio art classes at the museum or choose your favorite artmaking activity at home from our extensive and free library of videos created by our terrific Education Department. Fun for the whole family, the Artspace is an active and engaging space where you can create art together. The Artspace is always open during the museum’s regular hours of operation. Returning this fall and spring, the CF International Film Series will educate and inspire through films that are culturally, historically and artistically significant. Expanding our reach to new audiences, whether inside the museum or out in the community, is central to our mission. Through your generous donations, as well as membership fees, we’re able to offer free opportunities for community members to visit the museum and participate in special activities and programs. Appleton members always receive free admission to enjoy the exhibitions and Artspace. We encourage you to bring friends and family to share your love for the arts; free admission days are a great opportunity to do that!

Christmas The Urban Family Holiday Exhibition and Community Day Exhibition November 16-January 9 Revel in the holiday spirit during “A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family Holiday Exhibition.” This annual, beloved display adorns the first floor of the museum with themed trees and other holiday decor from the collection of Ocala cardiologist Dr. Paul Urban, his wife, Joyce, and daughters, Katie, Kristie, Kassie and Karlie. In addition to ornately decorated trees, the first floor will feature miniature villages, nutcracker soldiers, caroler dolls and more!
The Urban Family Community Day Saturday, December 11, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Enjoy free admission to the permanent collection and special exhibitions, including “A Dickens Christmas” and “Alphonse Mucha: Master of Art Nouveau,” and holiday crafts in the Artspace. Big Lee’s BBQ food truck will be onsite from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

ALPHONSE MUCHA: MASTER OF ART NOUVEAU Czech artist Alphonse Mucha is most often remembered for the prominent role he played in shaping the aesthetics of French Art Nouveau at the turn of the 20th century. Presented in the exhibition are 75 works by Mucha including rare original lithographs and proofs, an oil painting, drawings, a pastel, and books, posters, portfolios and ephemera. These extraordinary artworks are part of the Dhawan Collection out of Los Angeles, one of the finest private collections of Mucha’s work in the United States. The exhibition is curated by esteemed art historian Gabriel Weisberg, professor of Art History, University of Minnesota, and toured by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, “Mucha’s ability to understand the major creative themes of the day, to use them in the most original ways possible, and to create works of art that remain seductive for future generations is truly his great triumph,” said Weisberg. With objects drawn from the extensive Dhawan Collection, and with the publication of a catalog, the exhibition provides a new, original way of seeing one of the most prolific creators of late 19th century imagery.

HEART OF THE HORSE: PHOTOGRAPHS BY JULIET VAN OTTEREN Internationally acclaimed photographer Juliet van Otteren’s photographs seek more than the simple documentation of beautiful horses. Rather, her black and white images strive to capture their essence, perhaps even a glimpse into their souls. By spending significant time with a limited number of equine subjects, van Otteren is able to forge an intimate connection that captures their grace, close familial relationships, playfulness, and their ancient bond with us as human beings. Juliet van Otteren began creating photographs when she lived in various communities in the Himalayas and the Middle East. After living in the serenity of the English countryside for many years, van Otteren returned to the United States in the late 1990s and is now based in Florida. Her work is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery in London, the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris, among many others. Private collections include those of Gloria Vanderbilt, William Kennedy, Isabel Allende and Stephen Hawking.

GARDEN PARTY: PAINTINGS BY SUSAN MARTIN Florida artist Susan Martin’s photorealistic canvasses study the botanical world by concentrating on small portions of plant life. Her explorations, in exquisite detail, are influenced by the photographs of Russell Lee, of whom she was a protégé. Martin writes that Lee’s influence can be seen in her “sharp, clean examination of the subject, and her preference for strong contrast.” Martin has a Baachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin and she has continued her education through coursework in Art Education and Art History. Accolades include participation in the U.S. Department of State Art in Embassies Program, the Daytona Beach Regional Airport Art in Public Places program, inclusion in corporate and private collections throughout the Southeast, and numerous group and solo exhibitions.

ART REMEMBERS
ART EXPLORATIONS
In collaboration with Hospice of Marion County, these special, in-person workshops are for children ages 7-12 and an accompanying adult. Create artwork to commemorate difficulties faced during the pandemic or through the loss of a loved one. Each class is different and participants can attend one or both sessions.
These six-week, in-person sessions are for ages 7-12 and focus on drawing and painting. Each session’s curriculum is unique and contains new projects. All materials are included.

MUSEUM & ME PRE-K PROGRAM This multisensory program introduces children ages 2–5 to the Appleton. Each session will start with story time, then a brief visit to the galleries to examine a work of art, followed by a corresponding art-making activity in the Artspace. Children must have at least one adult with them at all times.
