DIRECTOR'S LETTER Jason Steuber, Appleton Director Dear Appleton Members, Spring has sprung and now we have our summer fun-and-sun days ahead of us. Your Appleton team thanks you for your membership, your in-person visits to the museum, as well as your virtual visits to our amazing repertoire of online events and video libraries. We are very proud to announce we have well over 50 Teaching Tuesday and over 50 Art Minutes videos. This is in addition to an ever-growing number of Artist’s Outlook interviews that highlight working, contemporary artists wit work in the permanent collection. Our free, award-winning mobile app continues to allow you to plan your visits and enjoy learning more about the museum’s world-class art collection through tours designed for both adults and children, and a variety of other regularly updated content. Over the summer, we invite you to again participate in our long-running “Mobile Photography Contest” and sign up for virtual summer camps and artist-led classes. The Appleton Store is also increasing its exceptionally curated offerings to include certified organic gifts for babies and tots, as well as art education accessibility materials, such as items in braille and American Sign Language. Here’s a hint for Appleton members: take advantage of the Appleton Store coupons found in this issue of Artifacts to save while shopping. As a community partner to well over 30 local and county nonprofits and schools, the Appleton appreciates the myriad of opportunities to go outside the museum walls and engage with our neighbors. We are particularly thankful for the locally owned businesses that have joined us to help Appleton members enjoy discounts at community-centric eating and entertainment establishments. Members can now enjoy a day visiting and shopping at the Appleton and then relish in discounts at local restaurants and eateries. COMMUNITY HEROES FREE ADMISSION PROGRAM Through 2021, the state of Florida’s first responders, health care professionals and educators can enjoy free admission to the museum as a “thank you” for their leadership, lifesaving work and heartfelt dedication to keeping communities safe. With an official work ID, the following professions fall under the Community Heroes Free Admission Program: law enforcement, firefighters, EMT, 911 operators, as well as health care, hospital and hospice professionals, and K-12, college and university instructors. “Our community heroes on a daily basis share their will to be strong and courageous with everyone, even though one may not know their names,” said Dr. Jim Henningsen, CF president. “We call them heroes since we harvest the fruits of their sacrifice and work.” Other free-admission categories at the Appleton include veterans and activeduty military; CF faculty, staff and students; children 5 and under; and Appleton members. Those with reciprocal memberships from other museums through Southeastern Museums Conference and North American Reciprocal Membership programs also receive free entry to the Appleton. How Your Donations Impact Our Community
2020 was a unique year for the Appleton — and for everyone. Being closed to the public for seven months kept us from doing what we traditionally have done best: showcasing amazing special exhibitions of art from near and far, sharing our world-class permanent collection, and providing learning opportunities at every step throughout your visit to the museum. Through generous planned giving, donations and grants, we strengthened and increased our offerings to the community (and well beyond) via outreach, digital programs and mobile app. Many of our members and visitors knew the late Mary Brent Kraus, who for over two decades graciously served her community at the Appleton. Her presence is greatly missed in the museum, but we continue to be warmly welcomed by her pioneering ideas and support of arts education and teaching. If you have visited the Appleton, then you have likely seen or created art in the Daniel and Mary B. Kraus Artspace, much loved by adults and children alike. Following Mary’s passing, her estate provided a $6 million cash gift to the College of Central Florida Foundation. Her legacy-defining gift established new endowments for the College of Central Florida and the Appleton. Mary was indeed a visionary museum member and a lead-by-example advocate for ensuring education was made accessible and available to children and adults in Marion County and beyond. Just a few years ago, she proposed that the museum align its educational endeavors to take advantage of 21st century technology. Her goal setting and generosity fully funded the Appleton’s free, award-winning mobile app, which staff continue to expand with a variety of new education content for children and adults. Your Appleton team offers a heartfelt invitation to Appleton members to please consider making a memorial gift to the “Daniel and Mary Kraus Appleton Museum of Art Education Endowment.” This fund is dedicated to enhancing the Appleton’s educational programs. CURATORIAL NEWS Activating the Collection
We hope you enjoyed our popular “Art Minutes” video series, developed during our temporary closure last year. The curatorial team has been taking a deep dive into the collection to research pieces from our permanent collection of more than 18,500 objects. While doing this, some added benefits occurred. The production of highly detailed images uncovered previously unseen aspects that led to further study and interpretation of the artworks. Fostering understanding through research is the bedrock of museums. As new information comes to light about art and artists, it is then distilled into publications, classes and even the object labels that identify each work of art on display. For example, examining the Appleton’s “Vase with Bitter Melon Vines and Birds” led to the study of the melons and their place in traditional medicine within Japanese art and culture. Scrutiny of the “Jar with Warrior, Dragon and Tiger Motifs” by renowned artist Suzuki Chokichi led to exploration of the sophisticated patinas used on the piece. By creating new research though digital technology, the Appleton joins other prestigious institutions in leading the way towards a more inclusive, nuanced approach to exhibits and scholarship. You can view all of our "Art Minutes" videos, published on a weekly basis, on the Appleton Museum of Art YouTube channel. We also want to point out several works that are now on view that haven’t been in the galleries in a while. On the second floor, digital art by Maggie Taylor and Julie Blackmon, photographs by Kenda North, and a large ceramic installation by Ocala’s own Meagan Chaney Gumpert. Gifts to the Collection Throughout 2020, the Appleton greatly benefited from the generosity of our members and friends locally and across the United States. In addition to foundation grants and individual cash donations, over 140 donated gifts of art were accepted by the museum for the permanent collection. Nineteenth and 20th century prints, photographs and paintings constituted the majority of the new gifts. The current Artifacts cover is a detail of a hand-colored page from "Birds of America" (published 1827-1838) by John James Audubon (1785-1851). Please enjoy this first glimpse of a select few gifts.

The Appleton’s virtual book club meets once a month on Zoom to discuss works of nonfiction that have been hand selected by Appleton staff. Led by Museum Educator Hollis Mutch, the book club is open to everyone and participation is easy! Take a look at the titles and meeting dates below, read the book at your own pace, and join us online for a thoughtful discussion. SUMMER ART CAMP Our annual Summer Art Camp will be completely virtual and free this summer, featuring eight unique weeks of themed camps, each with five activities and three live Zoom classes with an art instructor. Themes include Eco/Nature Art, Meet the Masters, Sculpture, and much more. MOBILE PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST & EXHIBITION The popular Mobile Photography Contest is back for its seventh year in a row! We want you to be inspired by any or all of our four categories: My Hero, Black & White, Adventure, and Horse & Hound. Photos will be accepted during the month of June; each participant may submit up to two entries in each category. Photos will be juried by a professional photographer and prizes awarded in each category. All entries will be on view in an exhibition from July 13-August 8.
