DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE A Letter to Members and Friends As the Appleton turns 39 on December 13, visitors can look forward to a warm welcome and an exciting schedule of exhibitions, events, lectures and studio art classes led by seasoned instructors. As many of you know, from November through January, the Appleton becomes a holiday wonderland, filled with the Urban family’s treasured displays and community trees throughout the museum. The Edith-Marie Gallery showcases more than six decades of multimedia works by Florida artist and retired University of South Florida (USF) art professor Jeffrey Kronsnoble. After joining USF in 1963, he quickly gained recognition for his surrealist works and exacting portraits, launching a prolific career that spanned more than half a century of teaching and creating art. As a campus and department of the College of Central Florida (CF), the Appleton employs full- and part-time team members who attend the college and welcomes interns from across Florida and the United States. Student interns from the University of Central Florida (UCF), University of Florida (UF) and Yale University worked alongside the museum team to produce and co-curate notable exhibitions. “Life, Labor and Lens” demonstrates how the museum’s world-class collection helps educate future arts professionals and stewards. On pages 10–13, explore art classes for children and adults taught by experienced instructors in a welcoming, safe environment. The Appleton is among the few Florida art museums with an entire wing dedicated to education, offering meaningful learning opportunities from K–12 and beyond. A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family’s Holiday Exhibition The holiday season returns to the Appleton with “A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family’s Holiday Exhibition,” filling the museum’s first floor with unmatched festive displays and seasonal nostalgia. The long-standing, must-see tradition features selections from the private collection of Dr. Paul and Joyce Urban and their daughters, Katie, Kristie, Kassie and Karlie, longtime Ocala residents since 1989. Joyce Urban’s enthusiasm for Christmas began during her childhood in Philadelphia, where annual visits to see Santa took her past elaborately decorated department store windows. Those memorable displays inspired a lifelong appreciation for the wonder and excitement of the season. In 1989, Joyce began sharing her own collection with the public, creating an experience where visitors of all ages could enjoy the same sense of holiday magic she remembered from childhood. Her Christmas tours also supported numerous local charities, including Harvest International, Interfaith, Pilot Club, the Women’s Pregnancy Center and the Counseling Resource Center, where she worked as a counselor. She continued her commitment to helping others by opening Urban Counseling in 2012. Each holiday season, the Urban family generously lends a portion of their collection to the museum. Although the exhibition changes from year to year, visitors can expect an array of themed trees, the beloved Dickens Village miniature, nutcrackers from around the world and many other festive treasures. While visiting, be sure to explore the first and second floor permanent collection galleries, where trees decorated by local businesses and community organizations are featured in our annual Community Tree Display.

Jeffrey Kronsnoble: Master of Allusion, A Life of Art Throughout his career of more than 60 years, Jeffrey Kronsnoble has frequently returned to a series he calls “boxes.” The title refers to his use of collaged images constructed and mounted in shadowboxes. He then paints these assemblages, often using a dry-brush oil technique, in hyperrealistic detail. Broken, torn, layered and obscured images and objects create fragmented, mysterious compositions. Partially hidden within them are recognizable images from news and popular media, family photographs and references to historical artworks. Kronsnoble’s artistic practice has been as varied as his collages and is not something that can easily fit into a metaphorical box. Over the decades, he has painted landscapes, trompe l’oeil still lifes, purely expressionistic abstractions and portraits of family members and civic leaders. He often juxtaposes combinations of these themes within the same painting. He works in watercolor, acrylic, dry-brush oil, graphite, tactile assemblage, and the aforementioned collage. He pursues all of these approaches concurrently, using whatever medium and style inspire him on a given day. Now well into his eighties, he continues to create art daily. Opening October 3, the Appleton is proud to present a major retrospective of Kronsnoble’s work in the EdithMarie Gallery, including over 80 works from the artist’s long career. Life, Labor and Lens: Randal Levenson’s Working-Class America At its core, the process of photography is deliberate, intimate and meticulous. It involves an artist’s time and skill to capture a precise moment. While initially the works of Randal Levenson may seem unassuming, each image displays the artist’s masterful ability to cultivate meaningful connections with his subject matter and orchestrate the perfect shot. On view through January 24 in the Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists, “Life, Labor and Lens” explores how Levenson transforms seemingly ordinary moments into poignant reflections on the American experience through the stories of working-class individuals.

Approaches: Abstract Art “Approaches” is a special exhibition series that helps visitors build a deeper understanding of artistic styles, concepts and media. Drawn from the permanent collection, with additional work by Heather Dawn Batchelor, this installation focuses on Abstract Expressionism, a post-World War II movement known for energetic gestures, bold color and expression. You might already be familiar with some well-known Abstract Expressionist artists like Jackson Pollock and Helen Frankenthaler. As you explore the gallery, you will see that works are paired with prompts inspired by Transformative Learning Theory, inviting you to slow down, reflect and consider new perspectives. There are no right or wrong answers — only opportunities for careful looking and discovery. “Approaches: Abstract Art” is on view now through January 17 in the second-floor Preview Gallery. Appleton with an Artist Saturday, September 19, 11 a.m. Explore the galleries with artist Heather Dawn Batchelor as she shares works that have influenced and inspired her own artistic practice. Along the way, hear about her creative journey and process, with plenty of opportunities for questions and conversation. The tour will meet in the lobby. Free for Appleton members; included with admission fee for nonmembers. CURATORIAL NEWS From Classroom to Gallery
Learning by doing is often the best form of training because it reinforces what is learned in the classroom. Preparing for a career in the museum field is no exception. This summer, the Appleton’s curatorial and registration departments have been working with two new student interns to develop hands-on knowledge of creating original exhibitions, selecting and curating works for display, measuring and framing artwork, and writing educational materials. Shelby Luffman, a student at the University of Florida, has volunteered at the Appleton since early 2026. Angelina Kovalchuk attends Yale University and has spent her summer at the museum. Both are Ocala natives learning the fundamentals of art handling, cataloging and curation at their hometown’s world-class museum. These emerging scholars are gaining valuable experience they can bring back to the classroom as they begin making their mark in the field. When you visit the museum this fall, you can see their hard work reflected in the “Life, Labor and Lens” exhibition in the Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists, as well as in the modern and contemporary galleries, also located on the second floor. As a campus and department of CF, the museum fulfills an important educational role by helping prepare the next generation of museum professionals to become knowledgeable caretakers and compelling storytellers. This engaging, multisensory program introduces ages 2–5 to the Appleton. Each session begins with a storybook reading, followed by a short gallery visit to explore a featured artwork or artist. Afterward, children will head to the Artspace to create their own art inspired by what they have seen. An adult must accompany each child throughout the program.
Led by an art educator, this program is designed for homeschool and independent students ages 6–9 to explore the wonders of the Appleton. Meet in the lobby to receive a special activity sheet. Use the sheet to guide your adventure through the museum galleries, then head to the Artspace for a hands-on art project. An adult must accompany each child throughout the program.
