DIRECTOR'S LETTER Jason Steuber, Appleton Director Dear Appleton Members, This year has been exhilarating for the Appleton — brimming with accomplishments, vibrant programming and innovative exhibitions drawn from the world-class collection of over 24,000 artworks spanning five millennia. Fun fact: 99% of the permanent collection is from private donations to the museum. As you enter the museum, our inaugural installation of “Art on the Up & Up” greets you on the underside of both grand staircases. These oversized and eye-catching vinyls, designed by artist and CF Professor Tyrus Clutter, feature two iconic faces you’ll recognize from our 19th century European collection. We will be highlighting more fantastic works from the permanent collection in a special exhibition that opens in October, “Skylines to Hemlines: Art Deco Design from the Permanent Collection." Explore the splendor and shine of one of the most recognizable periods that streamlined design, from monuments to everyday life. The exhibition showcases how Art Deco influenced all facets of life, ranging from furniture to fashion to industry and fine art. In addition to serving as the region’s must-visit art museum, the Appleton is always on the go with our many partners. The Appleton team travels throughout our service area of Citrus, Levy and Marion to partner with exceptional nonprofit associations to extend all that the museum has to offer well beyond the gallery walls. We will continue supporting the local economy by working with area businesses on coupons for our members and food trucks on Free First Saturdays. We also look forward to serving as the host venue for the Ocala Metro Chamber & Economic Partnership (CEP) Business After Hours event on September 21, and Marion Cultural Alliance’s annual Applaud the Arts celebration on October 14. "Across the Florida Straits to Cuba: An American/Cuban History of Buildings Left Behind” with Mario Cartaya October 7, 1 p.m. Cuba is a historical laboratory of buildings, streets and artifacts that have been mostly untouched since 1960 — allowing visitors to transport themselves into a time and space that has not evolved into modern times. In this historical presentation, Mario Cartaya retraces and recalls six decades of friendly and cooperative Cuban-American relations and history. No reservation needed to attend; free as part of Free First Saturday.

Film Screening: "The Great Gatsby" November 4, 11 a.m. See a free screening of Baz Luhrmann's creative and unique adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby." (2h 22m, PG-13). Screening is free as part of Free First Saturday.

Holiday Family Day December 2, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Visit on the December 2 Free First Saturday for annual Holiday Family Day, sponsored by Dr. Paul and Joyce Urban. Enjoy free admission all day to see "A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family Holiday Collection" as well as other holiday displays. Skylines to Hemlines: Art Deco Design from the Permanent Collection Curated and displayed for the first time ever from the Appleton’s impressive permanent collection of Art Deco objects, "Skylines to Hemlines" offers an introductory overview to early 20th century art, architecture, design, fashion, jewelry, paintings, prints and photographs created in the interwar period. World War I (1914–1918) and World War II (1939–1945) serve as the bookends to the Art Deco Period (1919–1939). Since military combat was then a global endeavor, an international myriad of creatives — artists, architects, fashion designers and performers — adopted modern materials with streamlined functional forms. Artists appreciated and found inspiration in the everyday, exotic and the exuberant. Art Deco is arguably one of the most beloved, admired and often-imitated periods in global design history, and established a genuine aesthetic and accessible taste that remains influential today. Skyscraper skylines to flapper hemlines are where the exhibition begins.

Caught Up in History and Captured on Film: Randy Batista’s Photographs of Florida and Cuba On view in the Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists, see Gainesvillebased photographer Randy Batista’s solo exhibition, “Caught Up in History and Captured on Film.” Through his camera lens, Batista documented his life and travel adventures. Comprised of silver-gelatin prints developed from film, the images in this show focus on Florida and Cuba — two places that have had a profound impact on the artist. Having lived in both locations, the artist’s awareness of place, time and cultural heritage are evident in his quiet but alluring street photography, landscapes and portraits. With a Leica 24 mm lens, Batista captured club members of El Centro Español de Tampa (The Spanish Center of Tampa) and their daily lives that he says "highlights communal times together smoking, drinking, newspaper reading, enjoying ice cream and socializing via dominoes and card games.” Batista intentionally shot many of the photos at a low angle, so the viewer feels as if they are sitting at the table with the subjects. While some of the men did not react to their photo being taken, others did quick poses or held newspapers up to cover their faces. Batista’s photographs in Cuba were taken during various trips to places including Havana and the ancestral countryside of his youth. During these travels, Batista explained, he was a street photographer either walking about or riding his bicycle while shooting. He would stop and chat with people while taking their portraits, capturing images of cityscapes and rural landscapes, as well. Artist Meet-and-Greet + Cuban Art Presentation Thursday, October 5, 5–7:30 p.m. (doors open to the public at 6 p.m.) Join us for a meet-and-greet with artist Randy Batista, whose work is featured in the solo exhibition, "Caught Up in History and Captured on Film," followed by a presentation on Cuban art by Gabriela “Gaby” Azcuy (pictured on right). Appleton Director's Circle members are invited for drinks and light hors d'oeuvres in the cafe from 5–6 p.m. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., artist Randy Batista will be in the Balcony Gallery for Florida Artists to answer questions about his black-andwhite photographs. Museum doors open to the public at 6 p.m. At 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium, all are invited for a presentation titled, "The 90s in Cuba Through the Lens of the Arts," by art curator, cultural manager, editor and lecturer Gabriela “Gaby” Azcuy. This event is free; no reservation needed to attend.

The Unscene South: Charles Eady Revisits History In the second-floor Modern and Contemporary galleries, “The Unscene South” features more than 20 paintings and mixedmedia works by Ocala-based artist Charles Eady. Born in South Carolina, and following his graduation from Claflin University with a Bachelor of Arts in Art Education, Eady has gone on to be an award-winning artist, author and educator who has exhibited both nationally and internationally. The work featured in “The Unscene South” is inspired by the history of free Blacks in the South prior to the Emancipation Proclamation. The term “free Blacks” was used pre-Civil War as a designation identifying those who were free — free to live, work and own businesses and property. Like the painting on the left, several of Eady’s works are dedicated to the sport of horse racing, introduced to America during colonial times (1492–1763). It is the longest running sport in America, and Eady’s work highlights the lesser-known fact that many of the first jockeys were Black Americans. A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family's Holiday Exhibition One of Ocala's best holiday traditions is back, adorning the first floor of the museum in full holiday cheer. “A Dickens Christmas: The Urban Family's Holiday Exhibition” features themed trees and much more from the collection of Ocala cardiologist Dr. Paul Urban, his wife, Joyce, and daughters, Katie, Kristie, Kassie and Karlie. In addition to ornately decorated trees, see the architecture, customs and history of Victorian England come alive in the popular Dickens Village miniature. Also on display, an extensive collection of nutcrackers from all around the world and handmade Byers’ Choice caroler dolls. The display is different every year. We encourage you to visit, even if you've enjoyed this display in the past, and to bring your holiday guests.

Art 101

Printmaking

Art 101 workshops are designed to inspire your creative side and are appropriate for all skill levels, but perfect for beginners. Ages 16 and up are welcome; all materials are provided. Register at AppletonMuseum.org.

In this four-hour workshop, participants will learn the basics of reduction printing with instructor E. Marie Fielding, creating multi-colored, layered prints using a single print block. All skill levels are welcome to attend. Register at AppletonMuseum.org.

The Sacred Geometry of Art Deco (Mandala Painting) with Lisa Russo Saturday, December 9, 1–4 p.m. Create an exquisite, original Art Deco painting using butterflies and geometric shapes on an 8 x 8 inch canvas. Learn the process of creating an original composition, transferring the image and using color theory. All skill levels are welcome to attend. Dig Into Clay These six-week sessions offer potters of all skill levels a chance to practice and develop new skills and techniques in wheel throwing and hand building through fun and functional ceramic projects inspired by your own interests. Figure Drawing with Anthony Ackrill Saturdays, November 4, 11 and 18, 1–4 p.m. Led by visiting Florida artist Anthony Ackrill, this class will focus on teaching the basics of figure drawing from life, using charcoal or pencil, and how to proceed through the steps of establishing a solid rendition of the model. You will be training your eye and your brain and your hand to work together to see more and record more with greater accuracy. $210 Appleton members | $245 nonmembers

About Anthony Ackrill Anthony Ackrill trained as a student at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy for five years. He then became an instructor there, teaching anatomy, figure painting and figure drawing, before returning to the United States. In his own work, Ackrill's figure paintings are realistic and literal. Painted from life, the models would be recognizable from the paintings. Ackrill's painting to the left, "Reaper," is part of the Appleton's permanent collection. STUDIO ARTS For Children and Families

Dala Horse Ornament (Children and Adults) This special workshop is for children and adults to make art together. Create a clay horse ornament inspired by the colorful wooden Dala horses of Sweden. Each participant will make their own Dala horse. Finished pieces will be available for pick up one week after the workshop. Register at AppletonMuseum.org.

Museum & Me (Ages 2-5) This multisensory program introduces children ages 2–5 to the Appleton, and due to popular demand, will be offered twice a month! Each session will start with a storybook reading, followed by a brief visit to the galleries to look at a work of art. Children will then visit the Artspace to complete a corresponding art activity. Children must have at least one adult with them at all times.

Museum & Me Pre-K Program Bimonthly on Tuesdays, September 5 and 19, October 3 and 17, November 7 and 21 10:30–11:30 a.m. Free for all children and Appleton members; included with admission fee for adult nonmembers. Advance registration required via Eventbrite; any applicable admission fees are paid at the door on the program date. Registration opens one week before the program date at AppletonMuseum.org. Museum Happenings (Ideal for Ages 6-9) This program is geared toward homeschool and independent students ages 6–9 to discover the wonders of the Appleton. Meet an educator in the lobby and pick up a special activity sheet, complete the activity sheet in the museum galleries, then visit the Artspace for an accompanying art project led by the education team.
