Annual Lantern Parade lights up Sandy Springs By STANLEY LEARY newswroom@appenmedia.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Hundreds of residents filled the streets of Sandy Springs on Saturday night for the 10th annual Lantern Parade, carrying handmade lanterns along a glowing one-mile route that ended at the Chattahoochee River.
The free event, one of the city’s most anticipated community traditions, drew families, artists and neighborhood groups to the Sandy Springs Municipal Complex on May 9 before the procession made its way downhill along Morgan Falls Road to Morgan Falls Overlook Park.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The Sandy Springs City Council has approved a second round of arts and recreation grants totaling $75,000 to five local organizations. The grants were approved May 5 and will be used to provide programming for underserved and low-income communities in partnership with the city’s Recreation and Parks Department. The grant program began in 2021 amid the COVID-19 pandemic with federal funding through the American Rescue Plan Act. The city set aside $200,000 in fiscal year 2026 for the program, up from $150,000. In January, the council awarded $113,400 to 11 nonprofits, leaving $86,600 in the program. Members agreed to open the second round of funding to distribute the remaining funds to qualified nonprofits. The city received nine proposals in February, but the Sandy Springs Police Foundation rescinded its application. That left eight seeking $120,000, more than what was available, Recreation and Parks Director Brent Walker said.
