SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Planned apartment projects and certain other developments in Sandy Springs must now complete water supply tests before construction can begin. The City Council approved the new requirement at its March 3 meeting. Fire Chief Keith Sanders told the council the amendment to the city’s Fire Prevention and Protection ordinance requires documentation for adequate water supply and fire flow to ensure the city can provide safety services. A Feb. 23 memo from Sanders to the council said the new requirement would target “larger or higher -impact projects,” including commercial and mixeduse developments to ensure their water usage does not strain the city’s supply. The memo was changed prior to the meeting, however, to require the study from “multiunit and single-unit attached projects.” A city spokesperson said the language was changed to “reflect the language in the ordinance, so it is consistent with our development code language.”
