SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — The day the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile came to the Sandy Springs Farmers Market is one many won’t forget. Seeing the 27-foot-long mobile hot dog in person sticks with you. Just ask Cathy, a Sandy Springs resident who first saw the brand’s wiener-on-wheels in their shared hometown of Chicago in 1962. “I had to come see it,” Cathy

said while visiting the iconic brandmobile during its Aug. 1 stop at the Sandy Springs outdoor market. “It brings people together, and I think that’s what I loved about seeing it when I was 7…the happiness that it brought all ages of people.” She remembers getting a miniature red whistle shaped like a hot dog that one can only get after seeing the Wienermobile in person.

City OKs 10-year, $280M transportation master plan By HANNAH YAHNE hannah@appenmedia.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — In a 5-1 vote Aug. 4, Sandy Springs City Council members approved the city’s transportation master plan, which outlines $280 million in investment projects over the next 10 years. Funding for the plan relies largely on recurring Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax, or TSPLOST, collections. At the Tuesday council meeting, city staff members said Sandy Springs has benefited from around $200 million in TSPLOST collections since the tax began in 2017. Fulton County residents outside of the city of Atlanta will vote in November on continuing the tax with a third iteration. If approved, that TSPLOST is estimated to

bring in $129 million to Sandy Springs by 2032. Cities are required to update their transportation master plans every five years to remain eligible for federal funding administered through the Atlanta Regional Commission. The update is taking place at the same time the city is revising its comprehensive plan and recreation and parks master plan. Council Member Andrew Chinsky, who voted against the transportation master plan, said he doesn’t want the plan to become obsolete. City staff members were instructed to ensure that any transportation improvements included in the comprehensive plan update are added to the transportation plan. During the council’s discussion on the item, Chinsky further outlined his

reasons for opposing the plan, which he said centered on its skewed vision and its lack of policies desired by residents. He said residents want increased walkability and reduced traffic congestion, particularly during peak school hours. Chinsky said he thinks the plan focuses less on helping connect residents and neighborhoods in the city and more on convenience for motorists driving through Sandy Springs. Mayor Rusty Paul said there is an incentive to align the city’s transportation master plan with the regional commission’s transportation improvement program to help ensure projects are funded. He said the plan needs to fit within the context of the region and not Sandy Springs alone.
